The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

I am glad you liked Buckeye. That is what makes this band so exciting. What One Man (not you Steve)doesnt like, another does. It is weird we missed such a huge Shakedown. It is an oddity, that within the same confines, you can have different experiences... After all, it was a Grateful Dead concert, so better time spent than elsewhere!

Buckeye Lake '88

I was there and thought it was a really good show all around. The first set with Hornsby sitting in was top notch Dead. The second set opened with three new songs, Victim, Foolish heart and Blow Away. i distinctly remember the reaction of some people towards Victim in particular, and watching the mood grow dark. At that point i knew that was going to be a great song. The Blow away and foolish heart are solid renditions. Terrapin was played to perfection. The post Space segment was pretty standard with a decent reading of The other one, even though without the Phil bass intro. It was indeed hot and oversold. I remember being parked about 12 cars deep right in the middle of probably the biggest "Shakedown street" I even seen. We were trapped in the lot for the duration. Very festive though. The day before the Buckeye show was spent at Cedar Point. Fun weekend. ....speaking of the 6/21/89 Shoreline PPV broadcast, I would also love to see that released. Great show.

Thanks for the info on Further and Deadco. Also thanks to other commenters. Did not realize that Deborah had caused some issues. Need to watch Long Strange Trip again and watch with a more discerning eye. I think it was Vguy that stated he just wants to hear the music and not be too concerned with the backstage or life making sausage aspects. At least I now understand why Billy and Mickey were shunning and now are back. Thanks again, G Edit OOOps: Stoltzfus not Vguy.

Speaking of more Video. I hope maybe next year you will choose Today's Date 1989 for either release or MUATM or both. I still have my old VHS tapes of the PPV, and they still sound very good. If you do, release the whole PPV with beginning and intermission. The crowd stuff at the beginning and intermission is always fun to show folks who wonder what in the hell was I into. Another show where Phil thunders hard during opening of Estimated. G

90s!

Kevjones-I totally agree. The 90s has some single show stuff, especially in '91 with the lush 7-piece band sound that deserves to come out. The late Brent era has been pretty covered with the entire spring 90 tour being released, which is phenomenal, but I always felt '91 was really their last great year. (No, not "great" like '72 and '73-'74, etc., I know, but still LOTS of good shows, that Jerry's rapid decline prevented from '92 to end.) Don't think I have ever even heard Sandstone but used to play soldier field in my car all the time and 6-17 Giants was one of the best shows I ever saw, along with 12-6-92 Tempe out of 60 or so. (And I hated Giants stad. as a venue and never went back after '92.) It's ironic that people are complaining about MUAM being too 90s when they don't have much other video, but the boxes have been all 70s-which is great-but there are some single shows here and there from '91 that would be a great representation of Bruce Dead. That was the other thing-once Bruce officially left and only played with them sporadically after spring '92, Vince really made you miss Brent. Vince was cool and all, I liked him...but still.

You heard right, Thin. First set performances were excellent, but it took them a while to get the sound right, at least from where I was sitting on the first base side. Second set was way beyond expectations. Despite blown lyrics in "St. Stephen" (we're all used to that), they nailed it instrumentally and "The Eleven" was shockingly wonderful.

Another view

I saw Pearl Jam a few years back at Wrigley Field. About 4 songs in, Eddie announced that there was a huge lightning storm on the way, and that we would have to get off the field. The huddled masses gathered together in the ballpark concessions areas for about 2 hours. Finally, the storm subsided (and it was truly a magnificent light show!). We all went to our soggy seats and Eddie came out. He noted that they had to ask permission from the nearby homes, but the mayor had given the 'ok' to continue the show at that hour. PJ finally started in again about 11:00pm and played until well after 1am. It's one of those rarities that they have never released on CD, probably not one of their best by their standards, but I don't know anyone who got to see them that night that was not satisfied. Maybe, in their particular situation, Dead and Co, did not feel they could do that (past Bobby's bedtime?), but for a band that typically plays between 2-3 hours, they owe you something.

Rocket 88

The only summer of 1988 show I saw was Buckeye Lake. One of only 2 shows that I did not like. As has been mentioned, excrutiatingly hot. If memory serves low 100's. Show starts off good. Not sure the heat did not take it out on the fellas. We get there and get in line early to tape, like maybe around 2. They had a huge sign on the interstate, "Grateful Dead, TODAY, $5." So not only did they get us paying full price and driving 400 miles, but then they parked us in a lot real close to the entrance. We thought great, small walk. Had security and parking people to park the crowd. Stand in line in that heat and get down right beside Healy. There must have been close to 100,000 people. I am sure maybe 20,000 only paid $5. Problem was when we leave, and ready to get back to hotel to dub tapes, etc. all of the security and parking people were gone. Ouch. After waiting for several hours we decided to take the Cherokee trail riding and found an escape through the woods to the local road. Did not mind one bit tearing up the field we went through to get to the road, it was all Buckeye Lake property. I still really enjoy the opening Stranger, still wondered about Bobby and his pink Strat. The Sugaree was also good, as was most of the first set. Even after dark it was still in the 90's. That is what made the after show such a problem. There was little lot vending to find a beer, veggie burrito, or water. That was my one and only large venue show. All others were 4,500 to 16,000. Whew. Hard to believe 30 years ago Monday. G

Came yesterday (after I left for work). Looks VERY nice, starting the ripping process now.

awful lot of box for just six shows

this box is big, it's very visually appealing, it seems to be made well, it is packed very nicely in it's oversized shipping box, very difficult to get it out of the shipping box, lots of cardboard protection, some padding and some white paper covering certain areas to guard against damage in shipping. All in all, it's a nice box, then you open it, there's the book surrounded by a cardboard fish, then there are the six shows, in neat little cutouts that they fit perfectly into. There is a lot of empty space too, lots of room for? also, the wooden box with the number of the edition is different, I guess you could use this for ? Am I missing something? Seems to me that there is a lot of wasted space in this box. I have not tried to remove discs from their sleeves nor have I played or ripped any of these discs yet so I can't comment on the sound or the discs themselves. What am I waiting for you might ask? I am busy hunkering down in preparation of the coming hurricane, which is forecast to come dangerously close to where I live. Anyone remember south park and aunt Flo? Well, she is coming and will bring misery and depression to all for about a week, hopefully, it will be a short period. :) Being from Florida, I am accustomed to hurricane prep, but I moved away from Florida after 2004 so I would not ever have to do this again, and yet, here I am, hunkering down again. I live in a mobile home so there is a lot to do to get ready for a storm, a lot more than when I lived in a block house in Florida. I hope everyone who is in this storms path stays safe and comes out unscathed.

I concur, Jerry too Low. But what can you do. This is not a multi track so it was all done that day way back in '73. I can just imagine the conversation. Weir - "hey, I'm testing out some flange effects, can you turn Jerry down a little on the board mix so I can hear myself better when I review the tapes?"

drshakedown74, I agree. I have only listened to disc 1 of 6/22/73 so far and the cymbals seem to be drowning everything else out. I hope the sound is corrected on the other shows.

I like the MIX

I have only listened to the first Show Vancouver. I really like the mix with Bobby and Phil and everyone except Jerry up a little more than usual. Bobby is present and contributing in a BIG way. So far this show sounds out of this world on my stereo to my ears. I do hear some anomalies during Bird Song that I think are inescapable flaws (like flutter or buzz) possibly from the original reel to reel tape recordings. I can not wait to listen to more, but after the first show and the Rocket Ship into the heart of the sun and beyond Here Comes Sunshine I am very pleased with this release. Thanks Dave and Jeff and of course all the musicians and the roadcrew that made the magical music in the first place. I am always GRATEFUL.

When I opened this up it was like I had almost too many options (all of them good). I didn't know where to start, so once I put them all on my iTunes I started poking around to get a taste...couple tracks from each show. the last day or so was hectic with family/rosh Hashanah stuff (happy new year by the way)....Now that I'm back at work I have the headphones on and going through 6/22/73 from top to bottom. I am going to take my time getting through these shows. This is a true gift. How about you guys? Going in order? Complete show at a time? Sampling at first?

Ripped

Only two things (so far). Disc 14 had a scuff. I used my SkipDr to buff it out and worked fine. I did notice on disc 14 the Black Throated -> Scarlet was "cut" at the wrong place. The first stanza of Scarlet is on the Black Throated track :-) Very nice box for this year's choice. What's coming next year? :-)

Received box Saturday. Discovered issues with glue on one disc , scratches on one disc and glue on cd tray for 5/21/74 show. The remainder of box and disc look good so far. Contacted CS and sent me info on exchanging complete box saying I will get Credit upon return and then I can reorder.WTF Anyone else encounter this? Is there a different contact I should use to replace the Last show package. Returned damaged items before and never this lack of customer service.

disc 1 issues

Got my box last night and it looks great. I've got a bunch of digital "flicks" on the BIODTL and the Deal from the first show. Bugging me too much to keep listening to that disc for further tests. Anyone else have that? Doesn't sound like it could have been on the masters, but...Just want to know if I need to send for a replacement. Thanks!

A box within a box within a box...

Got mine today. Number 1851. Everything is in pristine condition (including the shipping box). The "chest" really is a work of art unto itself, but the overall design (cases, disc art, book) is gorgeous. Love the sound quality so far, fully accepting the recording/mix anomalies of the era. As for the little wooden "spirit" box, my first thought was that it's for weed -- but then I read the insert and figured I'd feel guilty stinking it up after such a poetic, heartfelt sentiment.

An hour ago, my box arrived in Cologne, Germany, 100 miles from my home in the Netherlands. Tracking says it arrives tomorrow; would be amazingly quick!

Regarding returns

Regarding questions about how to make returns: All I know is I followed the instructions (that came in the box set) to a "T" when returning a defective CD from the July '78 box set. NEVER heard back. If I were to use that route again, I'd keep my tracking receipt from the post office. In the last week or 2 there has been a post or 2 about contacting a "Mr Rhino" or something to that effect with a link provided. If I had an issue again, I'd probably try that route 1st. Live & learn.

Box tomorrow?

Yes, it looks as though my box is currently in Norwich, about 40 miles away. Hopefully I will be in tomorrow if it arrives, so I can hand over the dosh and park the box for the evening time. Wish I wasn't going out, now.

WOW the box/packaging are amazing!!!

This is the most stunning packaging I could ever imagine for a box. Holy crap. BLOWS AWAY the 30 Trips box, by a country mile! Haven't listened yet but I know it sounds good. I'm just in awe of this box. Message to anyone who isn't sure if they want this box (apart for financial reasons): FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, JUST ORDER THIS THING NOW. You'll be thanking me next week. I'm not a fan of ridiculously oversized, ornate, bright packaging whoring for attention just to win a Grammy (I'm looking at you Cornell Box!! Those frilly oversized CD holders that aren't even good at holding the CD's are a joke). However this packaging is not gratuitous. It's simply stunning to look at and open - and it serves the music and the region appropriately. Buy this, now. No really, now.

If you are borderline in thinking about getting this pull the trigger. I was driving to Hartford yesterday listening to Loser and it was that good from 6/24/73!!! Also agree with the packaging of Get Shown the Light... For as good as those 4 shows are I tend to grab for them less because of the packaging, yes I still listen to CD's.... but have everything burned also... less is more sometimes, but with that being said I would have bought these 6 PNW shows if they were packaged in a U haul!!! bob t

I got chills just opening this thing

It reveals itself slowly and each element builds on the last piece and points to the next: the top of the lid, the inside of the lid, a paper salmon plank wrapped around the booklet, the 6 shows and a little decorated wooden box with my edition number. I found myself slowing down and savoring the process. The word "sacred" even crossed my mind. It was a cool experience. As for the music: It's great: Bright and rich.

Got Mine Today

Haven't listened yet. Unboxed with my wife who is cool (loves the Dead) but has commented in the past that perhaps enough money and space has been dedicated to the Grateful Dead. So how'd the unboxing go? Two "wows", one "that's really nice", and one "very reasonably priced".

Kudos to a beautiful box set, which arrived today. Wow! That said, I don't need/want all the packaging (as nice as it is). What I want is the music albeit in CD format. How about an option to purchase just the CDs for those who want only the CDs?

Just got done with Vancouver '73- I mean, HOT DAMN what a tight show! This Boxset is everything I would want from dead.net! Hope everyone is enjoying theirs as much as I am!!!

Defective disc 3.

Oh Drat and Dagnabbit! After several years and (many) hundreds of dollars spent ordering from Dead.net, I have finally received a defective item. Disc 3 of the first show in the box has a bad scuff mark that will not play or rip. Any advice on what to do? Who is Dr. Rhino? How do I contact him or her? Returning the whole box for credit and re-ordering seems a little extreme. I should be able to send a defective disc in for replacement. (Well, their quality control should be better)

I got some problems!

I am going to preface this post with this: this is the first major issue I have had Dead.net. 95% of my purchases have gone off with without an issue. I am posting this because I know this will help others out but also it may just help to get my issue resolved as well. So after the box set arrived yesterday I wasn’t able to get to opening it or listening. I did read the reviews about some issues so I was worried a little. So as I got to opening it today, I did an inspection of all contents. I discovered upon inspection that Disc 1 has scratches on it. I have played disc 1 and at least the first 3 songs are skipping so far. I continued to inspect the other discs and this is what I discovered: Disc 7 has light scratches on it. Disc 9 appears to have light scratches as well. Dsic 19 has large scratches on it. Even more astounding is that disc 15 is completely missing! Although the package and all contents were intact when it arrived disc 15 was not included. This is my favorite (sarcasm intended of course)... So as another has already stated, as these arrive, everyone should make sure to check out the discs right away. Scratches suck and I haven’t yet played all of the discs yet to see if they are affected, but I am certain disc 19 will be. Of course a missing disc pretty much is the worst case scenario, so maybe it is good I am only missing one. I am hoping along with giving others the heads-up this will help me to get help if I can't get this resolved. With that being said, I love artwork on this box, almost too good to be true. More importantly I have listened to disc 2 some (checking for more anomalies), and what I hear sounds amazing. I really think this box set is great and I really want all of the music intact. Anyway I hope no one else has any issues like mine and certainly I did not intend on being dramatic. Although things could be worse, this situation for me is a little on the devastating side as I was waiting so long to get this box (I bought it on the first day it was on sale) only to have it arrive with these issues. I have contacted customer service but I do ask that if all you of send some good Force vibes my way so I can get this resolved, ti would be appreciated. Hopefully this will be taken care quickly. Not too long ago I asked this question. No replies on this comment thread or private messages to me.So this box's dimensions are as follows: 11 1/4 x 7 3/4 x 8 1/4 (the old song: Cryptical Envelopment, comes to mind) Overall rating: 5.75 bolts (out of 5 bolts) Above excellent! I'm still on 6/22/73 and all sounds great. All disc look good and box in good shape...this Playing In The Band from 6/22 is mighty fine!!!! Can't wait to consume the rest of this beast!

Sorry to hear about the issues with discs, etc. Hope everyone is made whole. Mine was supposed to be delivered on Saturday (I paid for the expedited delivery and live in Chicago, the midwest's largest city and subsequently an easy target for sending a package to). Unfortunately, the UPS driver might have been stoned and delivered my set to the wrong address, which UPS clearly has but will not provide. They are "investigating" the issue and will let me know within 8 days or so. I did alert Dr. Rhino as well as the customer service email but have no updates from anyone. Will likely be around the east coast next week (due to nature of employment and the hurricane forecast) and likely will be a long time before I get a chance to hear this one, provided I get a copy prior to sell out, that is. Still would rather be in this position that for those in the path of the storm...

My boxed set arrived today... This is the most beautiful boxed set I have ever seen... I'm left in silent awe... I have managed to refrain from spoiling my experience with the listening sessions; i.e., I have not heard any of the music from within this work of art. When the time arrives, I will listen to each show in a separate listening session... man... truly beautiful artwork and presentation. Thank you to all who came together envisioning and creating this for us.

Wow - I no sooner posted the message below then received an email from Dead Net customer service advising they have forwarded a replacement set via expedited service. Hopefully the same UPS twit is not involved. Oh Happy day!!! Have a great one everybody - hope this is a sign that other's issues will be fully and timely resolved.

....#7473 would've been neat. Oh well. Box intact and it is MAJESTIC!! Studied the discs closely. #18 & #19 have very light scratches. Playing Seattle '74 1st because, A) light scratches. B) It's a birthday show for me. I turned 6! C) Wall Of Souuuuund! D) Best cover art imo. E) 47 min Playin'. This box is so beautiful, I would wear it on my head and parade up and down my street if I was so inclined and get nods from the neighbors. I'm literally speechless, so here I type....weed. box. Thirty trips has a stash compartment as well. You can't fool me TPTB.

very disappointed in reading peoples issues with cd scratches over the past couple of days, so I just received this monster box and decided I had better do a complete inspection and yes I too have the scratch blues there small but there cd #1 ,5,8,9,15. any body else ? and who do we contact dead.net or rhino ? peace to all

Buyer Beware! Do not pre order fro Dead.net!

I have been given the complete runaround re: the pre order I paid for months ago. I’ve bought many things from dead.net in the past and I would now advise any deadhead to avoid that at all costs. I purchased this pre order weeks and weeks ago, and didn’t hear anything about my shipment till this weekend. I heard it ‘should’ be out by end of day Monday. I was then told it was shipped, and given tracking numbers that quite obviously showed it didn’t get shipped for days. Now, dead.net claims they sent my package as ‘overnight express’ yesterday. UPS says it is a ‘scheduled delivery’ of next Monday. The 17th. I’ve sent multiple emails to customer service and have received no help! For a pre order of several hundred dollars (both the box set and the Lp). I still have no idea when I’ll get it, and dead.bet additionally lied about the shipping they would use in their email. Don’t ever pre order from dead.net, they will treat you horribly for your troubles. I have friends who purchased this set after it came out and have received it before dead.net even bothered to *try* to ship mine. I’m still waiting for some sort of response here - getting a release multiple weeks late isn’t exactly a preorder. What’s the point. I’m not going to be purchasing any more subscriptions or preorders from here anymore unless this somehow gets resolved...

Ordering Snafu's

I pre-ordered mine, don't have it yet tracking says tomorrow. It will come. I've been waiting for 45 years, what's another day. Perhaps better advice is don't trust what you might have been told from the customer service number. I have never heard of them sending a box set via Overnight Express. They are in the process of shipping out 10k of these this week. Sorry about your troubles, but relax a bit, it will come. If the order went through and they charged your credit card.. it will come. I have been buying CDs from GD Merch, then Dead.Net directly since One From The Vault in 1993. I have had a couple CDs with the box cutter blues, a couple scratched.. all were replaced. I am whole and have a bunch of good music to sooth my aching bones. I wish no one ever had trouble and there were no snafu's. I was bummed when a couple of my orders had problems. But they made good on every single order (so far).
