    August 20 - August 26, 2007

As we move toward the symbolic end of summer (Labour Day, of course), we have some great music to play spanning about 21 years of Grateful Dead music, from 1968 to 1989, two fine years with which to bookend this week’s offerings.

Our first entry this week is the encore from 8/21/68 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, a nice, juicy Midnight Hour. Although not quite as prevalent at shows in 1968 as it had been in 1966, the Grateful Dead continued to play monster versions of this Pigpen vehicle.

Next we’ll stop into 1972, to the opening night of the rightfully famous Europe 72 tour, to 4/7/72 in London. From the middle of that night’s first set is a typically hot 1972 rendition of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

In 1976, at the end of their very successful summer of comeback shows, the Grateful Dead entered the studio and recorded a couple of the songs they’d been playing that summer. From one of those sessions on 8/29/76 is this bare-bones Dancing In The Street with only Donna on vocals. While we’re in mid-1970s mode, we also have this terrific Samson and Delilah from 5/12/77 in Chicago. Despite the frequency that song was played in 1976-1977, they never seem to get tired of it, always offering up an inspired rendition.

Finally from the 1970s, on 4/22/78 in Nashville to be precise, we are pleased to bring you a couple of tracks from the second set, starting with the second set opening Lazy Lightning>Supplication and the pre-Drums Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World, both very nicely performed songs on this night.

Our last stop this week is in New Jersey on 7/10/89, a show that took place in and out of a massive thunderstorm. By request, we have the first set closer, The Music Never Stopped, and from the start of the second set, a great 1989 combination of Foolish Heart, Just a Little Light, Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. What a great tour.

Be sure to check in next week, as we’ll be exploring some intriguing material from 1969 and 1980, and other material between those years, and likely after. We try to surprise even ourselves. Feel free to write with questions or comments.

Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats.

    Target Market?
It ain't us, folks. I'm the last person to defend the recent developments, but think about it: Rhino knew when it took over this thing that Deadheads were going to be the least of their concern. It's been pretty well established that we're going to be buying up anything in the world of Dead-dom they put out - and with most of the stuff (i.e., Dick's Picks, downloads, etc.), we're going to be the ONLY ones buying it. Look at that counter on the left. Every time I look at it, it's got maybe 100-150 people. We're a shrinking community, and what Rhino's looking to do is draw in the general populace with releases that are solid, concise, easily digestible (none of the wild excursions of, say, '69 or '73). And most importantly, fewer and further between; they don't want to waste money on items for the finite niche market that is us - they want to put out one or two releases a year and make sure that some kid who picked up "Intro to the Dead" or whatever it's called at Starbucks doesn't log on here and say, "Hey wow, it's all free anyway, sanctioned by the band themselves!" and make that the LAST GD purchase they ever make. What I'm saying is, Rhino doesn't want to be the keeper of a cult phenomenon. They want the Dead to be consumed on the scale of Skynyrd's greates hits, or the Eagles or whatever. And if they lose even 50% of the diehards on this site... well, that's like 100 people, right? Nickels and dimes. Only 10 more years...

    Enough is Enough
At this point, I for one am not really interested in an explanation as to why the mp3's are no longer available. I refuse to believe our collective response was unforseen. The courtesy of an explanation would certainly have eased the transition and the lack thereof is an indication that it wasn't the decision of folks like Lemieux or Gans but powers that see our world from a much different perspective. In the end, it is troubling to have been given access to the music the way we were, which correctly recognized that we were not typical music fans, and then to have it changed abruptly and so rudely, as if none of that mattered. Poor performance indeed. Scott

    Gans
I don't think anyone's bashing Gans. I think he does give a shit, as you say. However, his is the only (semi-) official voice that's replied here so far. So, yes, I think most of us appreciate what he has done over the years (heck, over the decades). One or two asshole posts don't change that.

Hi friends. Yeup, use that feedback button at the bottom of your screen. And we appreciate you not taking it out on me & MaryE.... and just for the record, I can't stream at work, either.

Greetings, I wish I had the ability to stream this site at work but as a trial attorney I am out of the office alot and am forced to listen to my Ipod to preview the music you upload. Up until today, you were actually doing a great job hooking me on some of the DP shows I did not already have. Alas, since I will not be able to stream, I will just go back to other online trading sites and bid this site farewell! Hopefully, those in control will be made aware of the error of their ways and we all can continue expanding our horizons right here. I think it is important to point out that just as the war on drugs has failed, this site will also eventually fail by driving those in search of quality Dead music to other sites and places where we can get our fix. For all of our sakes, let's not let this happen. Free the music!

Walking upstairs...commenting to my girlfriend: "It's Monday night! Going to see what David cooked up!" I'll keep it brief considering I'm not the only comment here. I can't see the point of this. Every one here buys Dead and associated music. This is just one of those little perks that comes along with being a Dead fan and a part of a more than gracious taping/trading scene. If anything, this feature spreads the music to more listeners and future consumers (as much as I hate to admit, being as anti-consumer as I possibly can). David, please find a way to bring back the old format. ^^^mounainzen^^^

I just came back from Copenhagen today, drove 800 kilometers, and here I am, 4 o'clock in the morning Tuesday, looking for my Monday Inspiration. I bought 10 cd's today, talked to the shopkeepers, and we discussed how everyone in the business could learn something from you guys , but now I feel bad about promoting this site. Yes, we are nerds, I got something like 300 vinyls and cd's with the dead, and lots of other stuff. And what did this site do, it brought me back on the buying track. I slowed down after DP 21 or something, considered it and said that's enough, but in the last months I have started buying again. The Downloads were inspiring, fx you listen to some cool 76 stuff here and then go to a shop or order via the internet, Cow Palace 76. You were THE ALMOST PERFECT BROTHERS, and hopefully you'll consider this move again. A few years ago it was possible to download specials on bobdylan.com and lots of people I know used it, and you know what: It made us even bigger fans and buying more. Oh, now I just remember what one of the shopkeepers said to me today, when I did put my records on the desk, looking at my wallet he said with a big smile: Uhhh, that's tough men to know. You get it or what, Rhino. And another thing, Rhino, Everything should be in digipacks with good booklets. That way our kids will be glad some day. No one will feel something special for DP 36 in 2040, just music you can put on your ipod or something, but digipacks, booklets etc will make it like techno cars in a collector's world. Please believe me, and then bring David's Picks in superior packaging. LATVALA! Ole

I am just going to echo what others said and politely request the reincarnation of clips posted in .mp3 format. A lot of us that are truly dedicated have counted on this spot as part of our weekly ritual. We all go out and buy the real deal when it comes out too. Pretty please?

I, for one, am grateful for this site and for the content it provides regardless of the format. That said, would it be possible to continue providing *members* with the preferred "mp3" format and leave streaming for the rest of the world? Also, I suspect that an email sent to members informing them of coming changes would have lessened the shock/reaction factor currently displaying in peoples comments. Curiously, these changes were not even mentioned in the introduction for this weeks "Taper's Section"... (not at the top anyway) and so it was rather shocking to the system. Furthermore, as a tech-savvy person, I have not yet managed to actually play any of the streams and cannot seem to connect to the server. I am certain that this is not an issue on my end and it would seem that we have all been left entirely in the dark (no pun intended). Those responsible are far removed from the entire issue and see only the dollar sign that seems to be the finite recurring theme plaguing everything in the world today. Sales people by profession sell their hearts and souls for short term gain blinding themselves to the longer term. As a member and contributor to the content on this site, I also have spent far more than is even reasonable by majority standards. In other words, I have the original releases, the boxed sets and everything in between as well as a few hundred gigs of concerts in ".mp3" format. Then again, I also recently places bids in excess of one thousand dollars on the sale of items from the Garcia estate. What is the effect of one on another? For a deadhead, there isn't one. Additionally, for every countermeasure will be multiple counter-countermeasures. This means that anything that I stream on the web can be recorded and encoded into the preferred ",mp3" format using "free" third party software. In short Rhino, we can do this the fun and easy (symbiotic) way... or the hard way. This of course is up to you. Let us see if those in suits can for once "work" for their commissions and understand the true nature of their own product. This has been sent also to the "Feedback" submission form. Thanks to Dsvid and to those @ www.dead.net! Not-so-much Thanks to those @ Rhino... you clearly don't understand the nature of your assets and the optimal/appropriate ways you *could* market them. Feel free to contact me and I'll hand it all over... for free! Cheers, Rob It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free. There's nothing you can hold for very long and when you hear that song come crying like the wind, it seems like all this life was just a dream.

I'll first say that I have enjoyed the treasure trove of music and have listened to more Dead in this short amount of time than I have in over twenty years (yes I am dating myself). That being said, I was impressed that gems were available for download to us, those who sought out weekly bliss, only to be now saddened by the loss of an expected right. If this is unfounded entitlement, I am sorry but please return the MP3 download functionality! If it is economic, then let registered users pay for access to download this weekly release. It can then be viewed as a digital download that is bought and sold, just as all of the other content available on the site. Regardless, please return the download functionality!!! Thank you

Not much more can be said than what has already been said. Yea, I came looking for the fix and was going to update my SD card for use in my daily commutes. As was said, with a little effort it would be possible to simply record each individual stream. That is obviously not the point. So much music, so little time. I'm resigned to the fact that given the way I live and work, I'll never get to hear and record all that is available. This was a nice easy way to get a nice sampling. ...One more voice calling you.. and it's not mamma callin

Obviously everyones disappointed with this move. I'm beginning to think the Dead selling the catalog distribution to Rhino was a mistake. If they would listen to the fans and release new product quarterly throughout the year then this debacle could be rectified. One or two so so vault releases and rehashed rereleases over the last couple years is the wrong business decision with so much great stuff. MP3s really don't matter all that much to me personally but the lack of new product does. Going from 3 Dicks Picks, monthly flac downloads and a couple multitrack releases a year to what is being made available now is quite disappointing from a person who fits a key demographic for this merchandise.

David, thank you for all the fine music you have given us. Rhino, get it together, why do you want to piss off the Deadheads? You just drove away some of your potential customers. Someone who is one of us and understands us should be in charge. I listen to the mp3s and have spent money on the band since 1972. I have GD and individual member efforts in many formats. Have spent lots of $ on official releases on Warners, GD records, Round, Arista, GDP and on the GD boxsets and latest GD that Rhino put out. Also have bought lots of the Rhino releases of many other artists. Having free music availible didn't change my purchase of the official releases over the years. This site has been lots of fun for the past several months. Why spoil it? You were building on the base and now you are destroying it. You will still get your $ if you use mp3. I hope that tomorrow I click on this site and read " We made a big mistake, sorry". Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) The question is, what is the capacity limit on your email account? I think mine is 10 megs unfortunately. I would dare not post the ".mp3" files themselves on the web as I am now left to speculate on the legality of my being in possession of them. If this concern sounds slightly exaggerated it's because it probably is. I am just wondering if Rhino is more interested in an old (by old I mean young, 31 here) "deadheads" continued blind and devoted loyalty who has spent enough of the green to fill his own "vault" (and yes indeed, I have a temperature controlled secure "vault" and maintain my claim of not being necessarily "materialistic") or the possibility of cashing in on a new generation of heads to be marketed in generations to come..? As it turns out, it looks like there is a Rhino in the room and it needs to be pointed out.
One way or another this darkness got to give.

Man, they could have Taper's Section as a monthly thing, as long as one can download! Dang, we're not talking about 3 minute pop songs here! These tunes need to be digested over time, only downloading will do. Well, I guess it was good while it lasted. What a bummer. Greedheads rule the day. ..well at least this has livened things up around here..the forums have been a bit quiet lately ;-) ..good to take a few hours to calm down....actually I am still pretty riled by this, but well much worse things happen in the world There are of course many other ways to get the music if you really want it.....what really gets me here (and I suspect many others) is the total lack of respect shown in how this was done. All sorts of folks have been actively participating in and supporting the site, building up a bit of momentum, getting to know some friends, having a laugh .... it was feeling good! And the taper sections were a real part of that good feeling..... For whatever reason it was done..changing the tapers section to streaming only without notice, without explanation, with a cold announcement "Please note......" like a memo from the boss on the office noticeboard, well that's just downright insulting. It pours a bucket of cold water over the emerging good vibe and is an ugly reminder that the little world that was happily growing here has been a bit of a fantasy really. Even worse, lack of courtesy breeds lack of courtesy. This site has for the most part been remarkable in its instinctive tone of respect, kindness and tolerance....now this business has unleashed an ugly torrent of anger, abuse and bad feeling Shame

... alternatives. There are far too many torrent sites to mention that have all of the DP & DL Series releases - in FLAC - for free. I used to pass over them, feeling it was the right thing to do. The next time Rhino releases anything, I will be downloading it for free and giving it away to as many people as I possibly can. Yes, I am THAT PISSED. These were mp3s for crying out loud! And for many of 'us', it was an inspiration to buy more official releases. No more. I actually plan on trying to talk people out of buying new releases and encouraging them to seek out live shows that are traded for free on the web. This is SUCH BS... Too bad nobody has any balls... It would have been great if someone - ANYONE - stood up for the heads and said 'If you will only let the music be streamed, then find someone else to do this.' But of course not... NO BALLS!!!! Well, after over 120 shows and years of being told the music ours when the dead finished I guess they have to squeeze some more money out of it to pay for their overhead and families. people, you can find the music out there in cyber-land, complete concerts for free downloading, soundboards shared by fans, seek and ye shall find my friends. bye-bye

First off, David we all know this move is not yours. I cannot understand for the life of me why Rhino is holding back so much on the people who will pay good money for the Vaults music. Streaming this music is a big let down. Playing the music on good players and Ipods, cars has been great. Rhino has yet again kicked us in the gut. Took away the download seris, took away Dick's Picks, tossed out a few bones to the starving fans, markets us with music we have had for years and now this. Rhino has reached an all time low. I really miss the days when David was cranking out solid releases and we always had something to look forward to. The best part of the site has been victimized by corprate greed. "Rhino. please stop screwing us over" We are all sore enough. Jerry Garcias site has not been updated in years, nothing was posted for the days in between. To bad it has all come down to this, Jerry really deserves more then a half ass web site. This whole thing is off the chain. Well, off my box, had to get that out. I'm really disapointed that this whole thing is going down the tolit. Guess we all will wait for the next bone to be tossed.

I'm still PISSED!I think this will go down in history as one of the greatest marketing blunders ever - right up there with "New Coke." But I'm reminded that one of the oldest axioms of the corporate world still holds true: People will rise to their own level of incompetence. or put more plainly: Shit floats. I'm sure Rhino will survive by ripping off folks who are too young to know better. But that don't make it right. You know that artwork from Europe '72, the guy sticking the ice cream cone in his forehead? That should be the new corporate logo for Rhino. The new slogan? -- Rhino Records, still flinging poo after all these years.

Too bad. Another big slap in the face from Rhino. I guess after what's transpired over the last year and a half I shouldn't be surprised. At the very least the taper's section was helping to maintain interest in a group that has been neglected and abused by those closest to the music. It was a nice attempt at repairing some of the damage done. It must be very discouraging for you David Thanks for trying.
