I don't know about all that stuff but I will say that the quality of the reocrdings here on the vine yard for the most part is really good - good enough for me anyways! That goes for the recordings from etree also. I am with Mary - I don't mind when the Grateful Dead gets my money but I am not about to buy albums/recordings/downloads from an internet site that makes money for some dude. Plus I feel like I have supported the band just fine by buying their studio albums and the countless thousands of dollars I have spent on concert tickets the last 20 some years to not feel too bad about getting live recordings for free. I dunno what the deal is. I do know Wolfgang's Vault got off to a very sleazy start, buying up all Bill's tapes at the estate auction and putting the shows up for sale in complete disregard of the fact that they'd bought physical tapes but none of the accompanying rights. Litigation ensued, as you may imagine. At least, this is my recollection of events some years past. Still, that was some time ago and things may have changed. I've passed this info to the Rhino folks.

http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/concerts/support/downloads.html huge selection of Grateful Dead shows now for sale as downloads from Wolfgangs Vault. Many other bands too. Its a goldmine I am not sure how they squared this away with Rhino and the Band, but it all seems legit. Also I have no idea of the quality of the material or how it compares with the soundboards that already circulate. Not cheap either at $9.98 per set. It seems odd to me that we have been so careful to avoid vining officially released material, but WV appears to be selling officially released shows e.g Englishtown 77. Stil if Wolfgang's Vault can open such a huge download store, why can't this place???

Well, maybe a positive sign. For all you "Facebooker's" out there you might get this more then others. I sent a Mark G. Stanfield in Louisville, KY a "Friend request" 6-8 months ago. He never accepted it, but in looking at my "live feed" (sorta like the Twitter aspect of Facebook) he posted "Mark G. Stanfield joined the group An Arbitrary Number of People Demanding That Some Sort Of Action Be Taken. I don't know why he showed up on my live feed, but it sounds like it could be him. From this basketball fan's perspective however.... I think sometimes a little Dead-air would do him good! The man rambles! Finally.... met him outside the Spectrum one night.... he was getting out of a Lincoln and sneaking into a side door about 30 minutes prior to the show.... stopped briefly and chatted.... was a nice experience. I didn't know where to post this, but since the vineyard is like my home away from home, I figured this was as good a place as any. Bill Walton was talking about the constant criticism he receives as a basketball analyst. He said that he was like St. Stephen: "Wherever he goes the people all complain." I just thought that was cool. "That path is for, your steps alone."

I have virtually all of the '90 and '91 shows Derek lists as recommended by the Compendium. I have a few of the '92 shows... And very little '93 through the end. Derek... Send me a specific request from the 90-91 and I can get them out to you if you wouldn't mind vining them! M GR8FL ! Raymond aymond

Its great to see some new blood and the renewed interest in the vineyard. Is anyone planning on attending any of the upcoming Furthur shows in Boston? Let me know. If any of you guys have been hesitating to see this incarnation, I highly recommend going. Believe me, I am a huge post-Jerry skeptic ( my first dead-related show AG was a Phil show in 2008) and a grouch regarding anything post-1980, yet I thoroughly enjoyed the recent shows I caught at Madison Square Garden. I have not been into any post 1995 stuff--not rat dog, further, other one, phil & friends, or even the Dead. I have heard some Dead shows from 2009. I just dunno. I am sure it would be fun to go.

David, give it a try. You have nothing to lose but the price of a ticket! I think if you accept the fact that it is NOT the Grateful Dead without Jerry, but something different, you can enjoy it. It still is the music we all love, and Phil is still utterly amazing. Bobby is Bobby-- just older. "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue."

Current Furthur incarnation is Bobby, Phil, Jeff Chimenti (keyboard player from Ratdog), John Kadlecik (lead guitar player, from DSO (see Blair's interview with him on dead.net)), Joe Russo (drummer), Sunshine Becker (vocals, much better than Donna IMHO). "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue."

Don't hesitate, go see em, travel if you have too. After new years I've seen them 11 times and they are the best of the reincarnations (IMO) Jeff C. has been doing this with Bobby for awhile and really, I think he may very well be their best key boardist ever (and this coming from a Brent fan) John K brings a new spark, the magic and new excitement... 'nuff said! (and this from a Warren Haynes fan) Joe Russo can handle GD drumming way more than you would expect especially for being alone, actually some of the songs he steals the lime light .. that is how good he is. Sunshine IS better than Donna, hey sorry but her vocals are beautiful.. (I still love Donna but I had to say it) As for Bob and Phil I just think they are re-energized right now. It's wonderful to see. Can't wait for Broomfield. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

Redundant that I am calling it that, considering Vince only played with the Dead in the 90's... RMB has graciously agreed to send me a bunch of the 1990 and 1991 shows that the Compendium recommends. I think he has many if not most of them. I will seed vines from what he sends me. I will probably break them down into 2 or 3 DVD vines. Someone else volunteered to seed the Denver December 1990 run so those won't be included. Thanks Raymond!

I am a fan of Vince...well sorta. I never cared for Samba. Samba reminded me of a song to shake down and scratch for fleas. Not my favorite. Vince got better as time went on--like '93 to '95. Some of the fall '91 Vince stuff I heard is all over the place. To be honest, I liked Bruce on grand piano the best since Keith.

if anyone here tried to pm the next person in line for a vine, but that person doesn't accept pm'sdo you assume they are no longer acitve (as they got in line 2 months ago) and haven't posted here recently, and move them to the bottom, or do you send it to them and hope it don't die? a little feedback please

skip 'em the only exception would be if they provide their email in the thread, you email them, and they respond "yes, I would like the vine." A person needs to be available to vine.

No response to a PM = skipped. Sending a vine blindly especially to someone who is not here much = lost vine. The person's name could be moved to the bottom of the list so that they are not completely forgotten but yeah please don't send without a response first. There are a handful of folks here where I don't worry about a response but that list has been dwindling lately. If in doubt PM, wait for a response (I usually wait a week or so) if none, skip 'em. Thanks a lot for asking maustin! "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

Great question, and back in the day, we in the Vineyard lost many vines by 'blindly' sending along to the next viner (since we had an address), without confirming that they were active. I think that this REQUIREMENT is important to reinforce with every person wanting to participate in vining. If we can't get in touch with the person, that is a bad sign. If someone has computer troubles (such as Hal did recently) or moves or has a health crisis, and lets the Vineyard know, that is helpful and appreciated. We welcome knowing what is happening. And usually someone here is willing to help out as we have seen. Your vigilance is appreciated. I have been involved less lately, working a job and 1/2 (not really enjoying it) but I do check in and will jump in more. When we originally formed the Vineyard, there were some things that we didn't anticipate. But communication is the key, without it the vines wither and dies. All you brothers & sisters here in the Vineyard have worked out many kinks and this is a wonderful way to share the bounty and variety of great music and videos. I can't say thanks enough for each of you and the help you have given me in widening my musical library and joining in expanding my horizons. "We can share the women, we can share the wine..." I agree with you dstache. They should hire you to pick the shows ;) Hopefully the songs will at least be in order. I never understood the reasoning behind jumbling the set list up?? Especially if they are releasing the entire show anyway (i.e. The Fillmore East 1970 RT). Some of the releases they don't mess with the song order but some they do, I wonder what makes them tinker around sometimes and other times not?? Haha, thanks, me too! The order is definitely influenced by the desire to change discs only during a pause in the music (so not btwn China and Rider or Scarlet and Fire). I think that explains the 69 RT. The first disc is from the first night, the Dark Star > Stephen sequence, then the 2d disc starts with the opening tracks of the first night, some standalone tracks, then switches to the second night. Not sure about the 93 RT. All the tracks from 5/26 are in order on discs 1 and 2, except they pulled 3 tracks from set 1 and put them on disc 3. I graded 3/31/88 and 4/1/88 as Good shows. I may be a little off, maybe I wasn't in the mood the day I listened to them, maybe they are a little better than that. Even so, I wonder whether Blair kept a straight face writing the blurb.

Except for some '89 stuff, I typically won't touch the late 80s (87 to 89) with a 10-foot pole. '87 and 88 are probably by least favorite years for a variety of reasons. :-) We all have our likes and dislikes. I prefer '86 over '84 and '85.

Hey now so it looks like dstache and RMB will get us some vines going for 1990 and 1991. Can't wait! I can start a 1992 vine, I have and/or am getting I think all the shows on dstache's list except for some of the March ones. Does anybody happen to have 3/1, 3/2, 3/5, 3/6, 3/12, 3/13 1992 so we can complete the list?? =) "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

about using the USPS. Instead of sending first class like most of us do, tell them you want to send it "media mail". I just sent two large packages to zep. So large, they wouldn't even take them first class. But sending them media mail, each package only cost me $2.77. So if you want to save yourself some coin, here's one way to start.

All, The best way to save both time and money is to keep the vines in a SHN/FLAC format, preferrably burned to DVD-R's. You can fit up to 10 or more CD-R wav formatted disks on one SHN/FLAC DVD-R. You can also copy a DVD-R containing four (or more) full shows in the same amount of time it takes to copy one CD-R with EAC. It is also much easier and cheaper to mail one or two DVD-R's than a dozen CD-R's Both the SHN and the FLAC conversion tools are free, available to anyone with an internet connection, and very easy to use. If you can burn a CD you can easily use these useful tools. While I was tempted to use USPS media mail service, a friend of mine working for the Post Office DOES NOT recommend using it for anything fragile. He said media mail can get pretty beat-up and is subject to rough handling. Not to mention it can take up to 10 business days to reach a destination. Keeping the vine in the original SHN/FLAC format also helps preserve the source information. Not a bad thing either. Best Wishes and Thanks To Everybody on "The Vine"! Jimmy

Essentially we are getting this amazing music for the cost of postage plus the cost of blank disks. When you look at it in this light, I think we should send the stuff first class. Of course, if you really can't afford it, then send it any way you can. "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue."
