"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

On the Owsley Stanley Foundation site it does clearly state: "Long out-of-print, these recordings was transferred and remastered from the original tapes in Owsley Stanley’s archives, and includes all new album art and liner notes, including a series of rare band photos from the Fillmore East in February 1970, original cover artwork (“Electric Mushroom”), and new notes from the Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation. This is the second release in the award-winning “Bear’s Sonic Journals” series and the first joint presentation by the Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation." "Long out-of-print..." meaning that this is a remaster from Bear's original tapes. It probably won't sound too different from the original 1997 Grateful Dead Records GDCD 4013 single disc release. This re-release has been re-packaged with nicer art, more photos and a 2nd essay (liner notes). Hopefully, the original liner notes by Bear will be included in this release, too.

That ABB release ---- The Owsley website is not as clear as it could be, But what I gather is that currently there is a 1 CD compilation available that is basically a remastered version of a release from the 90s. Its the ABB opening for the Dead at Fillmore East in Feb. 70.(The sets that became Dick's 4) They are also going to release digital versions of all the material they have of the ABB on those nights. Presumably that includes more stuff than is on the single CD. Last I looked the CD is available now but the downloads are not yet. owsleystanleyfoundation.org I have the original disc from the 90s. Its awesome.

"Bear’s Sonic Journals: Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970 presents restored and mastered recordings of the Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East on February 11, 13 & 14, 1970, captured by legendary Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, a/k/a Bear."

It looks like a reissue to me. I've got the one that came out in 1997, and its got exactly the same song list. Although its possible that they played the same set every night. Its got some sleeve notes by Bear, and he refers to it as being.."pretty much what the audience at the show actually heard." Which suggests that it was a recording of one particular show-although it doesn't specify which one. The title of the disc, though, refers just to "Feb 70" which suggests that it was a compilation made from the shows they played in that run. Which is a long winded way of saying that I don't know either.

That first Boz album is in fact the second Boz album. The first, just titled "Boz" was released only in Sweden in 1966 and only 300 copies were pressed - therefore a hard to find item to say the least. However, it was reissued on CD in 2014 by the South Korean label Big Pink. It is OK but as MaryE rightly said the album with "Loan me a dime" etc. on it is awesome - as are most of his subsequent albums. His new album "Out of the blues" will be released tomorrow! Bear's Sonic Journals - Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East 1970 is a single CD with the following tracks: 1. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed 2. Hoochie Coochie Man 3. Statesboro Blues 4. Trouble No More 5. Outskirts of Town 6. Whipping Post 7. Mountain Jam Remastered from Bear's original tapes, this will be released on August 10. Is this a reissue of an earlier release? I am not really familiar with the Allman Brothers catalog so I do not know. I'm sure someone here knows more than me.

Agree, that Roggae opener knocked me over. One of my favs. Ran out of steam after the first set; west coast shows are brutal on work days. Still awaiting my DaP 27 arrival; hopefully it's on the stoop when i get home. I trust All is well with folks in Deadland. Be Good, everyone. Sixtus

In my mind, the clues point to 10/18/1972. But I guess we will see soon enough. Seriously, this posted four times and there's no delete button?
