"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

....me too. Tonight I'm spinning RT 4.5. Lounge Dead to some. To me it's just the GOGD."Sleepy fire in your eyes. Is that desire in disguise?" Coitus anyone? I've had girlfriends and a current wife who pull that string. Shazam!! ....edit. The Dancin' is worth ones attention. Pull out your Boston Road Trips, check your disco at the door, and crank that shit!

Similar setlists for sure, and I'm not so fond of 22, but 26 is a completely different animal. Much better main show and bonus. The two Other Ones are massively different (hell, the two halves of Other Ones on 11/17/71 are incredibly different from each other with that fantastic Me & My Uncle jam in the second half and Feelin' Groovy in the first, along with at least 3 other distinct jams). Also, some of us didn't like the shows chosen for 22, as 12/4 & 5 are almost universally more highly regarded, and both circulate in good FM SBDs, which is probably why they chose the lesser knowns. 26 is a great offering in giving an opportunity to directly compare the sound of the band with just Keith, then adding Pigpen, kind of like Dave's 6 with Pigpen and Pigpen and TC. I'm avoiding wading back into the sound/performance debate on this Pick again, I've made my points on that, and I'm happy for those who are ecstatic with this release. It won't get many listens for me probably, but I'm okay with that, I have 26 other Dave's, 36 Dick's, and a bunch of box sets, and other officially released shows, so I'm perfectly fine with it just sitting there making the collection pretty. ETA: Vguy did you see Fantastic Mr Fox as well? I'm a sucker for Wes Anderson, and Isle of Dogs didn't disappoint for me at all. Also, the Bob, Brent, Billy, Mickey Jam leading into Drums and the Space afterward are high points on this release.

....it was just shit. Drop the crazy. I like my happy place just fine. And yes alvarhanso. Stop motion is a dying art. I latch onto every one I can find. Meticulous and wonderous.

That was some crazy shit out of Eyes. For a second I thought I was the one who ripped a couple lines during the break. I think it'd be cool still to have a stash of the old tapes. I never had any, but I'd keep some if I did. Maybe particularly famous ones, ones that got released later.

As Pete Townshend put it in Naked Eye:You can cover up your guts But when you cover up your nuts You're admittin' that there must be something wrong And to Vguy, a couple pages back, I saw you mention watching Isle of Dogs with the family. Fantastic movie, watched it twice in the last week. The second time, I had watched all the featurettes and was more blown away by what it took to make. One of the artists put 297 freckles on 22 different heads for Tracy, and they put each stitch of hair in by hand. Great movie and a nice homage to Kurosawa.

Last paragraph: "At the end of Eyes, Bobby and Brent stayed on for a spirited boogie with the drummers. During the drums I danced right up in front of the stage. In an unusual acrobatic feat, Mickey hit a beat, leapt into the air and spun around, landing in time to come in on the very next beat. One of the biggest highlights for me was the jam that Bobby and Jerry played after Drums; it was a beautiful duet and sounded much different than what was usual at the time. It even brought Phil out from the wings (sans guitar but with a Heineken in hand) just to watch. That show was a very special treat for everyone who made it there. Too bad they never invited us back." PS: In the archive, this show gets consistent four/five star ratings. In DeadBase it's listed 19th for 1983 "Favorite Tapes." That's not, btw, "Best Shows." Incidentally, 10/14/83 is ranked 23rd for 1983 and I definitely think 10/14 is the better show. Or maybe it's the more familiar show? Idk, need to give 9/2 another whirl. At any rate, I'm happy with this pick. Compare Dave's 22 with 26: VERY similar shows. These are on 22 and not on 26: Cold Rain and Snow, Brokedown Palace, Smokestack Lightning, China-Rider (bonus disc). All else are repeats. From a quick glance, everything on 26 is on 22. Much needed mid-80s variety with this selection. I still think a solid 84 needs release. That said, someone posted the Black Peter from DeKalb 10/29/77. There's apparently a Betty Board sitting in the vault...just waiting for release. That release will be awesome. Can't imagine much complaints from that one. But who knows!

In my mind, the clues point to 10/18/1972. But I guess we will see soon enough. Seriously, this posted four times and there's no delete button?
