    interesting case of weird dvd's
I had a case where a dvd that came to me appeared to be blank - or unreadable, and I took an old (really old) DVD ROM drive & hooked it up with an IDE to USB cable - and it was able to read the DVD - and I copied the data off. Sometimes these little esoteric technical glitches can be a real pain. Also, I was having trouble with a movie package (Pinacle Studio 12) and the tech support said I needed RW dvd's - so I bought them - and then realised my burner won't deal with them. However, I have a work laptop that loves them. & I have a whole spool of them - but I'm leery of putting out a vine dvd on a RW disc. For now, I'm thinking of using them as data back-ups to free up some disk space. I'd appreciate any thoughts on if it would be bad to send a vine out on RW discs - what with all the people not able to read stuff already & losing things.

Thanks CB for your philosophical perspective and many more thanks for your efforts updating the vinedex and creating musical compilations to share. Is there a folder for identifying AWOL vines? Maybe we should think of vines as living things. They are born they live a life and they die. Some live to a ripe old age. Some are cut down in their prime. Some die of neglect or mistreatment, some fade away as a result of natural causes. No matter how much folk try to care for them, some we lose to the actions of bad people. When we create a vine we send it out with our best hopes, but we cannot control what happens to it. So long as good people keep creating vines and the majority care for them the vineyard will thrive, despite the losses. :-)

However there are definitely some vines that are gone for good unless someone can do some re-seeding. "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Marty et al, I really appreciate all the vines and music from all of you. I started out with basically nothing a year ago. I had about 6 shows on cassette tape I got in 1990 and 1991 in college. Now I have over 160+ shows on CDR. Being able to read flac is the jackpot. I have more shows on DVD I have not had time to convert to wav CDR. That's another 20+ shows right there. Anyway, I maintain a list of vines I sign up for. I cross out the ones I get in the mail and then send back out. I have this list taped to my office wall. There are 15 vines I have not received yet for various reasons (lost, not my turn yet). I don't have the time (and I am lazy) to go search out the status. MITD sent me an excel spreadsheet of his active vines. I have it if anyone wants to see it. I got it about a month before he went AWOL. I think what we need is some spring cleaning. For us to pronounce dead some inactive vines and have Marye remove them from the pages--wipe the slate clean. EDAD

It took us a while to figure out what was going on.(it was a big mess) Some of the dvds worked and some didnt. We found out the people that had the working copies also ran vista. We now burn everything on my computer. I hope windows 7 is better, I know xp will not be supported much longer.

I have stopped seeding vines for now... Why... because 100% of them are either gone the way of the jstraw and MITD vine destruction or discs are misplaced or lost when sent from one viner to the other. I am sick and tired of trying to reseed or replace. I probably won't contribute much in the future which is a shame but it takes time out of either work or family to do these and for them to just evaporate is ridiculous. So this is a call to all viners to TAKE CARE of each vine and send it on its way the same way your received it. Don't sign up for too many vines at the same time. Have some respect for the good people that have been seeding these. Marty

I am putting in 2 vine request. Not sure what's out there. 1) JGB with Cats under the stars (1977/78) 2) Late '69 (August through December) Early '69 sounds totally different than late '69 stuff. I have 4 shows from this late '69 era: 8/23, 9/1 (gaps between tracks), and 12/31 (gaps between tracks). I can vine 8/23 if that is not out there. I'll go check.

I needed to write a little letter to you all...and here it is.http://www.dead.net/forum/going-furthur Copy and pasted. Hey boyz and girlz...LOVE YOU....missed you too. Figured I'd just write everything here, because I assume most people check this thread. I've been under some serious pressures lately, Mom is back in the hospital, and honestly when she was out it was like a full time babysitting job. So, I appreciate all the kind vibes from all you from before, she's doing ok, just not there yet. Also, I've been working on projects @ the same time so I've had to put PRIORITIES ahead of being online and talking to my family. I will be getting everything squared away here in the next couple of days, I really just need to sleep and take a breather from the Chaos of what I've been dealing with. So please don't think that I've forgot about prizes and Getting back online/chatting/talking/vining and talking with all you kind folks. Just know that I've been under EXTREME stress with Mom's Disease and dealing with the game called "Life". Thanks for understanding, and I love you my family....ALOT! In fact without some of my close friends and dead.netters (family freinds) I don't think I'd still be sane right now. CC: Hope you get some rest and your mom feels better soon. I have not experienced a lot of the issues that some of you have dealt with on a personal level but I've been there too. In 2006, my daughter was born 3 months premature and spent about 2 1/2 months in the childrens' hospital. That was the one of the most stressful times in my life. It was a living hell. Been there. I feel for all of you having hard times. My daughter is doing fine now and is such a blessing and did not have any of the bad outcomes the doctors said she would have. My prayers go out to all of you having a tough time.

All, I found this article on a GD music website (Workingman's Tracker). I don't have a copy of the February 3-11 Rolling Stone but if anyone does, give it a good look and comment! Newsgroups: rec.music.gdead This is an article from this week's Rolling Stone (Feb 3 '11, page 22). My first thought was, "This has to be a hoax..." But here it is: DEAD REACH BACK TO LEGENDARY 1972 TOUR FOR MASSIVE BOX SET Due in fall, the 60-plus CD release includes every show from European trek. On April 1st, 1972, the Grateful Dead arrived in Britain for the opening dates of their first European tour. The timing was perfect - "the feast of fools," guitarist Bob Weir says, laughing. "There was a challenge for us, playing for people not familiar with what we were up to. But we were ready for fresh ears...we were hot."... In the fall, the tour will be released by Rhino as a limited-edition beast: 22 shows on more than 60 CDs. The lavish set, available by pre- order from the Dead's website, will cost over $400 and is unprecedented even by their archive-box standards. "By the time we're finished, we'll have put two years into this," says producer David Lemieux, who expects mixing and mastering to wrap by June. "If there was ever a tour that needed a complete release, it was Europe '72. It's one of the top three tours the Dead ever did, and there's a pristine 16-track recording of every show..." "I remember that tour clearly," says bassist Phil Lesh, noting that no one in the band had been to Europe before. [SIC] "In Hamburg, we played in the hall where Brahms played. In Paris, I literally felt the spirits of Chopin and Debussy. I think that made us play better. I remember being on..." "Someone would catch fire, and that would spread," Bob Weir says. "I'd catch a riff everyone coalesced around. Then someone else would come up with something that took us another way. It was a collective flash - time to move on." The Dead were in dramatic transition that spring, emboldened by the jazzy ambitions of new pianist Keith Godchaux. "It was amazing how tuned in he was to our music," Lesh says. "In Paris, he played like a god." The European tour was also the Dead's last with ailing singer-organist Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan, who died in 1973. "He didn't have as much energy as before," Weir says, "but he was trying his best to deal with it."... Lemieux says other Dead tours deserve full release, such as the fall of '73 and spring 1990: "It's such a diverse band. You can do boxes from '72 and '89 back-to-back, and there's nothing similar about them, except it's Grateful Dead music." "It all boils down to, 'Is there a story there?'" says Weir. "If we can find an era like this, with a story line and development - and I have a feeling there is - there would be merit in doing this again."

Interesting, Flyer, you must be part of the inner circle, or at least I must be well outside of the circle, as I have not received such an email. The latest issue of Rolling Stone is 1/20 and there was nothing re: the Dead on page 22. We'll wait and see.

This is a monumental endeavor. I wonder how many people will pay 450 bucks, however.I will be very interested to see if they reach their requirement of 3,000 orders by April. What do you guys think? "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue."

If they hit 3,000 orders there will be some wealthy folks out there in Dead Land! 60 x 3,000 = almost a 1/4 of a million CDs ... Maybe they should offer it in flac? =) "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

Someone posted this in the topic for the boxed set. Basically, they will not even begin production unless they are GUARANTEED (450 x 3000) $1,350,000. How much of that do you think is profit? How much will they earn if they sell 5,000 sets? "The sky was yellow and the sun was blue."

I am not sure how you calculate profit here. 10,000 copies times $450 each = $4.5m Bobby, Phil, Billy, Donna and the estate of Jerry, Keith and Pigpen all get their cut. That is the big question. I'm sure the sale of the vault to Rhino was not a complete sale. The individual members must have retained a cut on every sale. There are engineering costs, other creative costs (Blair J getting the bulk of it, JUST KIDDING!), physical costs for the trunk, discs, etc. There is a small amount of money that will have to go to pay the writers of the cover songs. And then Rhino has to pay their employees. Not just the CEO, but the accountant, the secretary, the receptionist. I honestly do not think they are making a killing here. Sure, they are making a little money, but nothing outrageous.

Well, it turns out the GD store IS NOT accepting orders yet for Euro 72. Even though I received an order confirmation number, it appears that the new system being used cannot locate my confirmation. Order placed approx. 3:30AM Central. Called 1-800-CAL-DEAD at 7:00AM Central to confirm and was told they have no record of the order. It's Just Another Day! Best Wishes-Jimmy

I'm flying to Michigan in the morning. My Dad is 60 yrs old and has multiple scelerosis. He's had it most of my life. His mother, my grandmother, cares for him. He's been in a hospital/nursing facility the last 6 weeks. It seemed like he was getting better and was going to be sent home, but things took a turn for the worst. Thanks for all the kind thoughts and hopefully I'm back early next week.

Hope all turns out well. Boy, after reading the posts regarding the Europe 72 boxed set, I have reached the conclusion that the substantial upgrade in the quality of the shows they offer, simply isn't worth the hassle. I will stick with my collection gathered mostly from the vineyard and be satisfied. Personally, I don't see the need for every single note played during the entire tour, although I do recognize that many people feel otherwise. The Rhino people sure seem to have a tough time with everything they release! "Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own."

All is well, my Dad isn't as bad off as it seemed. Not that he is well, of course, but things aren't as bleak as they seemed. Thanks for all the good wishes, all! I am not holding any vines except for the Vince 1990 P1 which is still waiting for its own thread. For some reason I think Marye may be a little busy at the moment. ;) Supposedly, I have ordered the Europe 72 box. I got a pre-order confirmation as well as a reservation confirmation, but I couldn't confirm the order here on the site and Customer Service told me to use the reservation code. The process definitely sucks and they need to do a better job. These bad vibes will kill you, Rhino! The main thing is to NOT limit it to a specific number but instead, if you have to limit it at all, to limit it to a specific time (a month say). However long you limit it, it has to be long enough that everyone who wants one and is willing to pay can LOG IN and actually place their order.

First - I want to say I wish him the very best. This is the thread I bumped this morning – probably the latest I seen http://www.dead.net/forum/11-85-shn-flac-vine I’ve sent him about 5 vines which I don’t think anyone else has requested – he acknowledged receipt of the first only. I am behind on a couple that I can certainly wait a while for… I am aware of the difficulties he is having – but I feel it is best to skip him until he is back up to speed.

Hey boy and girlz, Just as a heads up my mom is finally out of inpatient therapy (hospital) and is now only doing the outpatient program....so I'm "babysitting" for only a little while each day, and things have calmed down on this end. I know I have a few vines that need to go out and also, from what I hear, possibly need to reseed (ie. possibly the zepplelin DVD, etc.) let me know. I'll search my inbox and the forums for things as well. FINALLY, I feel like a 50 ton weight is lifted of my shoulders and can breathe again. Love you my family, Critter P.S. Smiley Dave said he had a ton of vines in a box as well, and is having some major medical issues, so he was just going to send that box to me and I'll make sure to get them to the right people. ♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥ Twirly Banner

I haven't read all of the 'Meta Topic' vine so forgive me if this has been covered...but I was wondering what I do when sending a vine across the pond. Do I make another copy to send there to make a branch in the vine and keep the original, send the original or .....??? I know there aren't many rules here but I don't want do anything that goes against the normal procedures and protocol and stuff. Also any tips for packing would be appreciated, do you just use the bubble mailer or do you use something more riged? Mike
