Dave's Picks Volume 28: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 6/17/76

This year's Dave's Picks series comes to a close just as the band's getting back together again in '76. By the time the Grateful Dead hit New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre - for the very first time - on 6/17/76, they were buzzing from their reunion, armed with new and revived material, the Rhythm Devils reformed with the mischievous Mickey Hart once again behind the kit. They'd skived off the unwieldy Wall of Sound and scaled back the venues from cavernous arenas to intimate theatres. Quite the treat!

During the first set, the Dead's playing was nuanced ("Cold Rain And Snow"), detailed ("Looks Like Rain"), and intricate ("The Music Never Stopped"); the singing struck softly ("Row Jimmy") and raised hairs ("Ship Of Fools"). But it’s the big barreling energy of the second set you’ll want to brace yourself for, replete with a disco'd "Dancing In The Streets," a low-down funky “Help”>”Slip”>”Franklin's” and a wind 'em up to wind down "Let It Grow">"Wharf Rat">"Around and Around." Can you keep up? There's only one way to find out.

This complete show, balanced out with a couple of bonus tracks from 6/23/76 and 6/28/76, was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Grab a copy before they're gone, gone, gone.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

All this talk of Europe, especially Europe 81 reminded me of days long ago when Rhino used to sponsor Blair Jackson to write here once a month in the form of Blair's Golden Road.

There's a great write-up on the '81 European Tours (there were two that year). He gives great praise for the performances but alas it was the mix that makes these shows difficult to release. Check out his comments below, very well written and on point.

    https://www.dead.net/features/blair-jackson/blair-s-golden-road-blog-fo…

If only we could go back in time and brainwash the boys and management not to pull the plug on 'high end' recordings in 1979 forward... I believe if the 80's forward got the Betty Treatment they would not be so oft maligned..

That would be an exciting and off the wall choice for a box set. As would Europe 1981-which is all but lost in the mists of time.

Thinking back to Bruce playing Valley Road with the band on 10/30/90-at that time, I had never heard of Bruce, and had never heard Valley Road before. Maybe because I was so bemused, I projected this state on to everybody else-including the band.

I would be into another release from this tour. The 10/27/90 paris show from the 30 trip's box is a monster. would also love to see Compton Terrace and McNichols from Dec '90 released. Those shows were epic. Especially 12/9/90. Awesome show.

I vote yes, most of those shows are top notch, new energy, new keyboardists and Jerry on fire. What's not to love? I would love to see these all released via box set, like E72, that would be awesome. For the same price too and not on cheap disks. There are a lot of fantastic shows with Bruce and Vince at the Ivory, check out those 3 shows from April in Orlando 91, I was there and it was like stepping back in time to the 60's, lots of freaks, flowers in their hair, no hassles from the police, in fact, they were quite friendly, and really good doses everywhere. I wouldn't mind that 81 Europe tour being released either, that Barcelona show from that tour is just frigging awesome. Give us some European Dead love Dave, I'm sure these would sell like hotcakes.
Valley road was a Bruce song that was played by the boys for Bruce, his big hit back then and, well, it was a big hit for Bruce. It's good to see the E90 tour getting some love by others other than me. Would that make you guys the other ones? :)

The white background actually makes it easier to read on a phone, so I’m all for it. With the old yellow background I was having trouble reading the text on a phone. I rarely read these boards on a computer, just phone or tablet.

I love that Valley Road, especially the loose Bruce/Jerry interplay before the song. I wasn't there though, interesting comment on body language, etc. It was the second of six times played, the first in Germany 8 days earlier. I always looked it as a solo song that he just wasted to play with the boys.

As most have said, I am a big fan of the energy Bruce brought and man can that guy play the piano.

30 Days of Dead again, or at least I hope so. I haven't heard anything about it on here yet (service has not been just exactly normal lately), but I can't remember if there was any advance warning in previous years. That, together with the impending 2019 subscription launch and all the information that comes with that - and of course Dave's Picks 28 arriving. Its gonna be a busy month ahead.

Just finished listening to the awesome "AndOarAgain", the new 3CD reissue of Alexander Spence's legendary 1968 "Oar" album. As has been said before, the reissue of the year, with "Anthem of the sun" coming a close second. 😀

Marye~
I don’t know if you saw my post a couple days ago, but you cannot hover on a smart phone (iPhone 8+ / iOS 12). Besides that, clicking on the avatar photo or drop-down arrow is not working on a smart phone, either.

Background color ~
The two things in the comments sections that I thought made it feel personal and intimate (besides everyone’s warm and loving comments 😉) were the background color of the page and the font used for the subject of the comments. I can concede the font, but I think bringing back the familiar color of the background would make this new experience more comfortable. This white makes it feel like it’s just any other site.

Comments sections ~
I agree whole-heartedly with what many are saying about the comments sections on the product pages. I rarely post, probably only a dozen times or less since becoming a member of this site. But these “discussions” are the only reason I regularly come to this site. I know the site was only unavailable for a couple of days or so, but I really missed it. It’s something I like to check in on almost every day. It’s familiar user names like “marye” and many others that let me know I’m in the right place. I’m just not sure about the redecorating yet.

You are correct that you cannot hover on a smartphone, but on my phone tapping on the avatar brings up the pull-down menu. Then you can either choose something fom the menu or hide it by tapping on the up-arrow "^" next to the avatar. Hope this helps and hope it works for you.

Now time to watch the formula 1 race from Austin, TX.

Lots of confusion here, almost like the new user interface was designed to limit user interfacing.

I was initially unable to log in due to my password not being recognized, used the reset password feature and the link that was provided via email logged me in but would not actually allow me to reset the password. It appears that I have been logged in since that time.

I am also in the camp of liking the comments for a product linked to that product. This is the main reason that I come here, the comments on the product pages and the caravan of usual suspects migrating from one Dave's Picks comment thread to the next.

The other issues would be the white background, which is pretty blinding after a short period of time reading comments, the relatively limited number of comments per page and the already noted need to scroll up to read comments from old to new, and then the need to scroll back down to move to the next page. Hopefully the bugs are still getting worked out.

Sorry, I didn't realise you were talking about an iPhone. I have an old Android-based Samsung which works as described in my earlier post.

My daughter had an iPhone once - once was enough. I have heard, however, that iPhones are quite popular.

The comments can be viewed on the product page, just click on the comments button and they appear. But if you want to post it then sends you to the Community page.

Hot times in the old Winterland arena; great show from the Hamza El Din first set opener to the closing US Blues. The loudest I ever heard Jerry was during that night's Other One -> Stella Blue->Sugar Magnolia. VolleyBall games before the show, and a screening of Magical Mistery Tour(or Animal House??) A great Saturday night all around.

Now that you pointed it out, I do see the comments tab on the product page. Of course it didn't actually show me any comments when I clicked it, but I expect that they will work it out. Also discovered that my difficulty logging in was due to using my email instead of my user name. Doh!

... to declare that after seeing everything GD, from Robert Hunter solo acoustic to the latest version of Dead and Co., collecting thousands of hours of tapes, and buying pretty much everything this site has to offer, I never in my wildest dreams expected, during last night's Bobby and the Wolves show, the second set to open as follows:
Good Morning Little School Girl, Sunshine Superman>Dark Star. Smacked my palm into my forehead, I did.

Well, they're not going to change it back to the way it was, so I figured I may as well get used to it. Looks better on my laptop than the phone.

I'm a sucker for anniversary shows, so I just popped this one on. Ever notice they seem to have missed or cut off the first milliseconds of the opening chord to Bertha? Just a smidge.

Looking forward to this '76 show, haven't heard of any of it yet.

Thanks for the reminder. I did forget about the Anthem release. I bought that one just for the live show. In addition to my CD collection, I store all of my shows on my smartphone, each show in its own folder with unique artwork. Since I used the CD album cover artwork for the studio album on my phone, I created artwork for the live show, which of course needed a title. If anyone wants a copy of the album art for 10/22/67, I give you Anthem Of The Moon:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HPjGa4Ua3-yv3YbsP5o6oPD5TuC96-92

Talk about a couple of pieces to compare: The Other One from 10/22/67 and The Other One from 10/22/71. That will be the ride home + Dark Star bonus track from 10/21/71

Was just wondering if we could still comment on releases. Are the past release comments all permanantly zapped then?

It's going to take somew getting used to this new layout.

I've been touching on the anniversary listening program, and there are some great October releases. Particularly the later era stuff. Decided to deviate from that program and watch VFTV One. Haven't watched it in a while ande what a greeat underrated show that is. Sure hope they bring that series back.

As of this moment, the site still doesn't recognize my password and I have to use the emailed one-time link to log in. And there is a NEW problem. It appears I now get logged out except on THIS page.
Was trying to comment on the Welcome Back thread but opening that page kept logging me out. After two emailed link re-entries to the site, I re-entered the site without logging in, stopped by the DaP28 page and then to the Community Thread page then clicked "post a comment" and was suddenly logged in! Something is rather wrong... More than before.

Original purpose of going to Welcome Back thread was to point out that my favorite new site feature has a probably unintended side effect: The front page "recent comments" section is a great way to keep us comment-mavens up to date. Thank you all for that! BUT, I see that threads for the 2019 DaP and 7" subscriptions have been created. Can't access the threads ("access forbidden"), but does your marketing dept really want us knowing about impending purchase opportunities this way?

...after several days of nearly burning my retinas on the "ALL WHITE" border/background, I've come to realize that one of the fun/colorful/unique/personalized aspects that is now missing are the pictures of people's avatars. Even if the all-white is kept, the addition of the avatars at least would give some otherwise lacking "personality" to the pages and 'ourselves'. I'm not surprised if traffic here has slowed down - it seems some easy things could be done to make the pages a little more user-enticing.

Just my two pesos.
