Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Indeed, What Went Wrong?
What went right? Incompetence and greed. Deadheads provided the "name on the dotted line sure profitability", leading us to believe they were issuing Fillmore West like limited editions with all the neat stuff in packaging they usually come up with and then they made a couple of million dollars to date. Even the multi-colored symbols on the digi-paks were lame. What was the obsession with food? No originality, none. Nobody cared enough to make sure the digi-paks came off the line properly. Almost all the deadheads I talk to said this really gave Dead.net/Rhino a black eye and left a bad taste in their mouth. Here is the message from all involved that produced this: WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU, WE JUST WANT THE MONEY!

Just an FYI - I was able to complete my order using a cart page that I still had open from earlier today. Unfortunately, I don't see an option to add the box set on the site now so this information may not be helpful to most of the community out there. Peace ~

Never thought I'd say this, but maybe this is a bit too much for one release. Especially paying to have it shipped thousands of miles from the US! I agree with the other comments, maybe do it like Road Trips or as 10 CD sets or something - but once I unload the trunk from the post office, and then wait for the wife to go out so I can turn it up real loud, I'm gonna be in a nursing home by the time I get through 60 discs! And knowing my luck, Disc 59 will have a scratch/jump in it, but it will be March 2018 by the time I complain, and by then the 75 CD box set of the "Brent Years" will be out... Amazing idea, incredible to do it, but perhaps do the big box and then offer it as an ongoing series of releases.

I went into the music section of the store, clicked on the box set and was able to add it to my cart and purchase a copy. Just a "heads" up for anyone else who was losing sleep over the prospect of not getting a copy. I can save $50/month by September to pay for this. No problem. "Is maith an scéalaí an aimsir." Morning here in Europe, and I was able to order without a hitch. For those interested, the shipping cost is $85 to France; presumably, it'll be the same to other EU countries. That seems like a fair amount, given the size of the item. Naturally, with something this big, I'll get hit with customs duties - something that never happens for "normal" sized packages, and that may be as much as another $100. But it'll be worth it.

So I was thinking, the personalization thing, what is it going to be. It's probably not having your name hand-written by Bob or Phil. But looking at the sketch of the packaging, it looks a bit like an amp; I'm wondering if the personalization is having your name stenciled on it, like you see an amps and stage gear...? Can anyone comment on what this is going to be?

Ok, I know there are enough Heads worldwide to make this happen, but the majority of us out here in the real world won't be able to afford this trip. The idea of having the entire tour in a slick package that takes up a large space on the shelf must have come to some marketing exec just after he peaked, "Like wow man, dig this, we package like a biziollion shows in a steamer trunk and mess with the heads of all those old burned out freaks that keep whining about complete shows and then we charge them like a bizziollion bucks and limit the release so that they all got nuts trying to scrape up the cash to pay for it!" OK, it is a very cool idea. But you can be assured that this monster will end up being ripped and posted up on some torrent site for the ones that don't get the official release. I'm just saying. The more resonable course of action would have been to put these out as individual shows, released in the order they actually occured producing a steady stream of income over several years instead of grabbing just over three million bucks in a short term stunt. Remember, we are still in a very tough economy where many of us are just trying to make ends meet and still squeeze out a few bucks of individual shows, tickets for Furthur, and the other day to day things that give us a little joy. Gratefully I have my thousand shows or so to listen to and will just have to imagine what some of those Europe shows might have sounded like. On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

...managed to order it. At an estimated cost with shipping, customs etc of around £440! Time to start saving methink. However no sign of the confirmation email - has anyone received this yet? I must say i agree with the comments that it should have been released as individual shows (unlimited). They could have then had the trunk, book etc as an optional limited extra if you wanted, and gradually fill it up as and when you purchase the individual shows. That way those who don't want the fancy packaging or don't want all of the shows could get the shows at a reduced cost, and those who want the full thing could have spread the cost over however long they wished. Simples!

Sure, the CDs will be ripped and posted to Demonoid as soon as they're released. But is that why you won't buy them? Also, I'm willing to bet that the individual shows will be sold separately afterwards; they've committed a lot to the remixing/remastering, and not monetizing it would be dumb. But it's a cool package, and if you can afford it, it'll be nice to have. I have no problem supporting the remaining members of the Dead for releases of this caliber.

OK - so some people claim to have gotten through and ordered this thing. They are now asking for our patience because of "heavy traffic". Well, there are fewer than 100 people online and I still cannot place an order. And did anyone get the notification e-mail that this is available? I didn't. I bet you didn't either. Just another BS move. I know things happen, but they seem to happen A LOT with this company. Honestly, you should be embarrassed. This is no way to treat not only loyal customers, but loyal fans. I give up. I am done with this site. Another box set just became available.

do they not allow us to book simply by registering interest? Then there would be no rush on the checkout. Checkout as and when with a "token" from your registration for the boxed set. As matters stand, I'm going to be mighty pissed off if I don't get in on this. A UK Deadhead since the first album (Mono copy bought the first day of release - could I be the first owner of a GD album?!), Europe '72 was my intro to Live Dead. Still recovering. So this set would be a snapshot of a hugely important time in my life, plus some of the shows have never been heard complete in HQ. Meanwhile, I spent two hours y'day evening clicking, and now three hours this morning, and still no joy. Some of this I have waited nearly forty years for! Why was this not anticipated? And again - why not use a pre-registration system so that there is no almighty rush?

just got off the phone with dead.net rep said they knew what was going and that the problem would be resolved when those who signed up for the email notification yesterday (im assuming the first 3,000?) would be told when the system was working and then you could order

It's the COMPLETE sales technology disaster!            [as expected, sadly]

That person you spoke to is talking out of their a$$. Some people HAVE ordered already. "The" problem will be resolved when Dead.net gets its IT house in order, AKA a week from never. Server problems and unfulfilled tech promises ("confirmation email" anyone, ever???) are an enduring hallmark of this organization. Still, "it's all about the music" -- I'll be clicking until September to get this one, I guess...

This is ridiculous! You offer the set but don't have the technology/server capacity to handle the business. Get it together dead.net/Rhino!

the email notification was last night and yesterday afternoon only. they took it down...and put up this order button.....new guy i got on the phone said that if you signed up for that email you should be set and they would tell you as soon as it is working...whether or not this is an exclusive thing for presales or just public relations i dont know...the ordering process could start working for everyone at some random time. I'm skeptical about the people claiming to have ordered already I've been on top of this since the notification and havent had any luck. Dead.net said they put up a button to make it look like the site was working but its really down...no phone orders either they use the same system aparrently

Wish someone could comment on the personlization. Looks like the discs come in some sort of suitcase, maybe a luggage tag? What an unbelievable release.

I did place an order this morning (Europe time), and I have a PDF of the page which I saved just in case. I did not, however, get an email confirmation of the order, but in the past, those e-mails have never come quickly.

european orders could have been on a different server or you just got on there before everyone in the states crashed the system

I doubt there is any "different server." I think it's just that I got it through at a time when there weren't a lot of people trying to place orders. It probably went back up overnight (my time; or late US time), and didn't go down until the American heads woke up. It's as though if more than three people try to place an order at once, it dies. :-)

Gives an error message as well - "Your call cannot be completed as dial". You'd think they didn't WANT our money!

So, you don't even believe yourself what you say they told you and you dutifully relayed to us: "the problem would be resolved when those who signed up for the email notification yesterday... would be told when the system was working and then you could order", so you keep trying anyway? I'm tickled.

A call this morning ( 10: 22 am est ) to customer service offers the following info - trouble should be resolved shortly ( a few more hours ), no orders being taken by phone and you cannot order online. Anyone believing that they have already ordered should double check, customer service advises that there are NO preorders validly taken at this point and any previous orders are not really orders. For what its worth.... good luck all.
