Dave's Picks Volume 28: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 6/17/76

This year's Dave's Picks series comes to a close just as the band's getting back together again in '76. By the time the Grateful Dead hit New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre - for the very first time - on 6/17/76, they were buzzing from their reunion, armed with new and revived material, the Rhythm Devils reformed with the mischievous Mickey Hart once again behind the kit. They'd skived off the unwieldy Wall of Sound and scaled back the venues from cavernous arenas to intimate theatres. Quite the treat!

During the first set, the Dead's playing was nuanced ("Cold Rain And Snow"), detailed ("Looks Like Rain"), and intricate ("The Music Never Stopped"); the singing struck softly ("Row Jimmy") and raised hairs ("Ship Of Fools"). But it’s the big barreling energy of the second set you’ll want to brace yourself for, replete with a disco'd "Dancing In The Streets," a low-down funky “Help”>”Slip”>”Franklin's” and a wind 'em up to wind down "Let It Grow">"Wharf Rat">"Around and Around." Can you keep up? There's only one way to find out.

This complete show, balanced out with a couple of bonus tracks from 6/23/76 and 6/28/76, was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Grab a copy before they're gone, gone, gone.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

Love the riverside chat; less windy than the seaside ones, and more animals to distract our good buddy Dave. TBH, I was hoping for something a little different - something earlier with a nice Dark Star, or something featuring a big fat Shakedown (28 volumes and still no Shakedown! C'mon Dave, ya just gotta poke around!)That being said, June of 76 is the nice and gooey center of the 70s nug, and I'm excited to hear this one all cleaned up! Happy Friday, DeadLand! Peace

Dave gives the old Download Series a shoutout here and we did indeed get an official release of the very next night from this run with show #4 of that series back in 2005. And if you’ve got that show, then you’ve also already got one of these two “bonus tracks” because the 6/28/76 High Time was also a bonus track on that release. Lest anyone think I relay this info out of bitterness, nothing could be further from the truth — I love 1976 and a recycled bonus track doesn’t dampen my enthusiasm one bit. Bring it, Dave!

i'm so tired of getting '70s shows. it would be one thing if the grateful dead only had a small window of quality live performances, but we know that's not the case. it shouldn't be too much to ask for more diversity from this series. please give us shows from other decades. the '90s has yet to represented. why is that? ----

HI. For those who know me, this will come as no surprise. For those who don't, I'm the guy here that regularly posts about the incredulous lack of Shakedown Street in the Dave's Picks oeuvre.

That being said, I offer this day in Grateful Dead history as a shining example of why I so persistently wave that flag: 10/25/79 - https://archive.org/details/gd79-10-25.set1aud-set2sbd.miller.22792.sbe…

Check out the Shakedown, and stay for the rest of set II, especially the Eyes>Space dissolve... (set I ain't bad either!)

Peace

Appreciate your feedback - I was more taking about on the main product page, where just the first couple of comments appear - clearly the avatars are no longer appearing there, but once you pop out to the expanded page - BOOM! There they are.

It was mainly a comment on the main product page and it's lack of anything but white as you begin to scroll down. The avatars there at least made for a color splash and - admittedly - I would tend to get to know the various character posters by recognition of their avatars as opposed to trying to now squint to see a size 4 font with their name...

All cosmetic stuff...I know...but still. Just my dos pesos. Change in general is a good thing; it just takes some getting used to, like anything in this life.

Happy Friday to Deadfreaks and I hope this '76'er starts to land for people.

The meta thinking behind this is, more or less, to let the discussions flourish as long as they like regardless of the status of the original merch. We'll see how it goes, but I kinda like it, and with luck we will have fewer brokenhearted souls trying to purchase something that's been sold out since 2011...

Good to get front-on artwork that can be downloaded.

Still being given the run-around by the vagaries of this site, but mostly managing what I want to do, one way or another. Sadly lots of regular posters seem to be missing at the moment.

#5424 in da house for some heavy listening tonight...but why are the inside cover notices about Paramount Theatre shows in Portland????

Almost done with the first listen of Dave’s #28 and I like what I’m hearing. The band sound relaxed and easy going from the start of the first set which is impressive for a band that has taken a well deserved year off. Second set has a real jazz vibe with a nice loose delivery. Donna sounds great and sings with a lot of confidence. The mix is solid with the drums placement up front and some great keyboard work from Keith. For a first listen both Keith and the two drummers are what stands out.

At 1:40 of Let it Grow the disc seems to jump, definitely not suppose to sound like that, so I guess I will be asking for a replacement for disc 3. If anyone else hears this jump on Let it Grow, please mention it.

My tracking said it was at the post office but would not be delivered until Tuesday, so I tried to do an intercept. To my surprise the woman behind the desk actually said she would do it. And then when she looked it up she told me that it had been misdirected to a different post office far from here. Of all the shitty luck.

6003/18000 arrived in the eye of this Nor'easter keeping us all cozy and locked up indoors today.
Was not expecting it until Monday, so a nice surprise for today.

Sounds spectacular! Rich, warm, Betty sound. Keith sounds great here. Another winner Jeffrey, Dave, Mac, and TPTB!!!

Can only imagine if this had seen Plangent. Sad that 2/26/77 will not see Plangent either.

9787 of 18000. Believe it or not, I'm going to watch a Dead & Co show from Alpine Valley 2018 and listen to Dave's tomorrow. I've been planning another D&C couch party for awhile now, and I usually do them on weekends. I'm excited to hear the new Dave's. And I love the PNW box. Had my second listen of 73, and after Dave's, I'll probably go for 74 again.
My practice in anticipation of a new show like a Dave's is I listen to Dead from other years than what is about to arrive. I like to have open ears where I have not listened to that year right before it arrives. I listened to Dave's 19 from January 1970 over the last few nights and I really like 1970. That's a great release.

I am a Subscriber & received a not numbered edition of Dave's 28. I was surprised to see this. I thought all subscribers receive numbered editions.

....but where is Dave's Picks on my phone? It's there. It's gone. It's back again. Apparently, the only way I can find the page is my clicking a community post that was made on said page. C'mon dead.net. It shouldn't be that hard to find. It was in the special edition page, but not anymore. I need an app. I also need my Dave's 28. Arrived in Vegas at 5 am today. Guess it missed the bus.

This site is messed up. Everytime I log on it's a frustrating experience. On some pages I am logged on and on other pages I am not. I go somewhere where I thought I found something and it's gone or I am wrong. Nothing is intuitive. I am so tired of blindly staggering around this fun house that the community comments are the only thing I use. And I visit less because it's not a positive experience. I don't think I am alone. Comment traffic has slowed to a crawl even though Dave's Picks 29 was announced and it's a good one.

The site seems more geared to move product. That's cool. I buy it. I just don't hang around here much anymore.

Whatever.

The sound and mix on this release is phenomenal. Just finishing up first listen....heading into Wharf Rat...man oh man, this is really good! Dare I say, the best of the Dave’s for this year? I think so!!!

Mary E. - I am also struggling to find the Daves Picks link on my iPhone since the addition of Dave’s subscription link. I can still get here by clicking to the far right of my screen, just right of the 50th anniversary link....but I am a robot...doubt most normal humans can accomplish this....

First I log in, then in the search window I enter "Dave's Picks Volume 28". This brings me to a page with (many) search results. Try and pick the right one. If I pick the wrong one it takes me to a DP page where I am not logged in. If this happens, hit the "back" button to return to the searchh results page and try another link. Usually I find one that takes me to a DP28 page where I am logged in within 5 minutes. Then I can post something.

This surely cannot be how this is meant to work. Was this new site not tested offline before being unleashed on an unsuspecting world?

In a single four-letter f-word: FAIL.

EDIT: Another way of getting here (assuming you have managed to post on the page) is to hit the down arrow next to yor logged in avatar. Picking "Recent posts" should bring you here. However using this method sometimes I am logged in on the comments page, sometimes I'm not. This is soooooo bad.

I can see why the number of posts / posters has dropped dramatically. Coming here is not a pleasant experience any more.

this sucks, you are right simonrob, you log in, then you go to the store, then you find Dave's picks but you can't post until you log in, again? Christ, by the time I get done logging in again and again, I forgot what I was going to say. Also, please do something, anything to cut down on this white glare that is emitting from my computer screen. Come on, change it please, any other colour but white blinding white light.
Right now, what I see is a sell out, it's all about the product, lets not even call it music or merchandise, it's a product that they want to sell, sell, sell. And the prices for the product, jeez, way too much for most things that you might want.
Deadheads unite, let us know who and where you are so we can sell you something. And the cookie notice, never had that before, now they are collecting data on everyone who comes here, why? What do they want? Should I be paranoid? I can see why lots of folks have not returned to these forums, it's just not user friendly, they collect information on every single person who comes here, probably sell it to the highest bidder. I expect my email box to be undulated with span very soon.
If the captcha idea was to stop span, it ain't working, all ready seen people on here who could care less about the Dead. As with anything that involves humans, if there is a way around it, it will be discovered and utilized.
My days are truly numbered here. Maybe visit once a month to catch up on Dave's info, and maybe check out a box set but I think that is it. All ready removed it from my favorites. The wheel is turning and its on its way to sell you something. Now, on to prove that I am not a robot, or am I? If I was, would I know? I would think that my maker would program me to think that I wasn't a robot. I think, therefore I am? I think

Arrived and ripped.

Easy to agree with most comments about new site.

The white sucks, site seems to be geared towards selling more than community.

Maybe somebody who knows what they're doing can start a basic page without the rhino/warner overlords. Or just a basic "conversation" tab on this site. The conversation always flows here, we just move to a different product page to discuss, let's stop moving.

added edit - the other thing that burns my buns is the PM's. New site came up and bam I have all the pm's I've sent for 3 years back. You know the ones that when I erased said this action couldn't be undone! Now I have 10 or more pages of antique PM's AND there appears to be no way to delete them all at once, but I must open every one say delete, verify delete, return to pms, jump to last one and repeat (FOR HUNDREDS OF THEM???!!!???!!!)

Listened last night to the whole show. Great release.

"Donna Jean Godchaux And The Grateful Dead"

She is a constant presence here. She sings on almost every song. And she sounds great. Dancin In The Streets is a Donna song on this release.

And I love it. This release illustrates how much Donna benefited from the move to smaller venues and a smaller sound system.

P.S.-The white background here is scientifically engineered to discourage loitering.

I'm posting here because there doesn't seem to be any activity on the subscription page.

I'm excited for the Swing show! Of course, I immediately subscribed, even though the funds are tight (don't tell the wife! :) Probably a little hasty, and could have waited until payday next week, but I had visions of the sub selling out considering the way that these things have been selling - foolish, I know, but my reason tends to get clouded when dealing with new Dead releases... plus, if the Swing don't bring them in, I don't know what else would (maybe RFK 73.)

Count me among those hoping for more diversity with the rest of the picks. I would love to see the remaining 3 picks come from under represented eras. I would LOVE to see a Fall 79 pick (top 3 tour of all time IMO,) maybe a Bruce 91 show, and something from the primal era... maybe a double dose of 68 (I bet two shows could fit on 3 discs, or maybe for the bonus disc pick.) Anyway, I love it all, but the band changed so drastically over their run that I would like to see their various sounds well represented. Plus, there seem to be great sounding recordings from all of those periods available, (maybe a little rough in 68, but let Norman work his magic!)

Patiently awaiting the arrival of Capitol 76 while enjoying the "other" Cape Cod 79 show. Nice mellow listening for a lazy Sunday.

Have a great day, DeadLand!

Peace

This is my third time through DAP 28 with football now in the background. Good listen. Lazy, lazy Dead, but tasteful and well-recorded. Keith and Donna both shine. Never disappointed in any release here. I could care less what year comes next, because it is all good and I'll leave it to other folks to argue about. Which matters not in the end, they're gonna give you what they want to.

Finding the pages that one wants is not a problem. There are various ways of reaching the desired page. What is a problem is (after logging in) trying to get to a page where one wants to post a comment and simultaneously remaining logged in so that posting is actually possible. Once in a while that seems to be possible, but mostly after logging in on arrival at the desired page by whatever method the logged in avatar is replaced by the stick-figure icon that stands mockingly at the top right of the screen warning you that posting is not possible.

The last two occasions when I have actually managed to write a comment I have not been able to post it. The first time, the reCAPTCHA thingy refused to load and just kept rotating endlessly. The second time, when I hit Save I get taken to a page that announces that I am not authorized to view this page. WTF. I'm done here until this version of the site is either replaced or demonstrably shown to work as it should.

Another release, another defective disc. After a long run of getting discs that work from dead.net this is the second consecutive release that I have received with skipping discs due to the presence of incredibly fine, deep cuts or gaps in the plastic coating of the CD. The cut is so fine and deep that I can't really imagine how it would be the result of a scratch, so it seems likely to be a manufacturing defect. This is the same situation that I encountered on the PNW box, disc 5, and I am still waiting for a replacement after over a month at this point.

So far this release sounds great except for the skip on the first disc. Hoping that as I listen to the rest of it there won't be any skips on the second or third disc, but it does seem that there have been an abundance of quality control complaints with the PNW box so I am not overly optimistic that this release will be any different. It would be great if they sorted this out so that they are shipping discs that will play without skipping.

- Love this release despite owning it forever. I can barely tell the difference between this and my previous version, but I love the packaging and the adding of this selection to the "official releases" since we will be hearing these forever on digital music services.
- THIS is a great Help>Slip>Franklin's! NIGHT And DAY compared to DaP27 1983 version. This Help is melodic, well sung, unhurried, uncluttered, precise - a breath of fresh air... That 1983 Help is quite another story! ... a perfect example of the often jarring dichotomy between 70's and 80's Dead. 70's Dead was consistently good or great, whereas 80's was a crap shoot show-to-show and often song-to-song, depending mostly on the timing, quality and quantity of Jerry's heroin intake.
- Disc 3 has a major 1st set feel to it, right down to the bonus material. But I don't mind given disc 2 is such a monster. Not a criticism - Disc 3 is very well played. I enjoy having atypical setlists like this - not every show should be a greatest hits of that year.
- Great release - thanks to all involved.

This release looks great! Ripping it now, about to start my first listen. I am anxious to see if Journal Special Writer Joann Graham is correct in her estimation that the "highlight of GD's first set was 'Keep on Dancing,' an audience favorite with the crowd" (who else would an audience favorite be with, you may ask?) and the "percussion effects and Donna's vocals were superb in 'Wind in the Willows.'" Oh, I kid, Joanne, I kid. ;o)

1976 was one hell of a unique year, donchyaknow?
