The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

Mine arrived today. Scheduled for Monday, but the UPS truck pulled up around 5:00. Odd for a Saturday. I saw the driver coming up the driveway with a big box in hand so I met him at the door. "I wasn't expecting this until Monday." So you are why I am working today he responded, clearly not happy. "Do you have any pot you can sell me? It's the Grateful Dead." He turns and walks away in disgust. Those who got the download are missing out on a nice box. Even the kids thought it was awesome. Vguy, the number is in a classy little box between the CDs. Similar to a small jewelry box or some place to hide a key. It comes with a cool passage, distinct in Native American undertones. Very well done. I'm holding off on listening until tomorrow. Watching some old episodes of Parts Unknown. Tony was no Jerry, but he was a awesome dude nonetheless. 10/1/94 is the only show from TTATS that I have listened to past 87. Even then I have only listened to the So Many Roads. I have said many times, fall 94 was the dead cat bounce tour. Unexpectedly good.

They say...

...by the way, has anyone figured out yet who "they" are? The grays? The man? The IRS? At any rate, or so I've heard, "they" say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Hell, I think it's just being a stone-cold gambler. I buy lottery tickets every drawing, using the same numbers, and goddamn it I'm going to hit big one of these decades. Just you wait and see. I really wish my box had arrived today. Alas, it is not to be and I don't know if UPS delivers on Sunday. I've had those non-descript amazon white vans drop stuff on Sunday though, and that feels like Christmas. Although most of my dead.net WEA product arrives via the Good Ol' USPS, and on our street the mail goes into those group box kiosks. You got your box, and on a special day there will be a key waiting inside for one of the parcel boxes (few, and larger). You're always hoping for a key, and when you see it your heart skips a beat. My theory is that the ubiquitous amazon white vans (Sprinters and the like, windowless) are not adorned with "amazon" graphics for several reasons. For one, they'd attract looters and thieves. For another, we'll all get desensitized to them, and one of these times when one pulls up, you'll run out arms wide ready to embrace yet another Grateful Dead offering, and they'll (it's, "them" again) leap out and pull a hood over your head and throw you in the back. When you wake up, tied to a chair in a cold room with only a single, bare light bulb hanging above you, you'll hope like hell Liam Neeson is about to break in and save your ass. \m/

I have to laugh at these posts.. yesterday a friend of mine sent me an email he got from one of his friends. It's long.. names omitted to protect the guilty. It was written a year or so ago.. so I'm sure it's floated around a bunch. To the author, I hope it's ok to share. The title was Next Level Obsession. ______________________________________________ I love Deadheads with OCD. Not my post but I appreciate the work. Thu Oct 19, 2017 6:49 pm #1 When I was in high school, there was a girl who would always ask me if I had acquired any new Losers of the “sweet Suzy” variety. And so whenever I received a new batch of tapes from some remote part of the country, I’d note any Losers with the “sweet Suzy” verse and then surprise her with one at the next gathering of our mutual group of friends. These gatherings were almost always centrally concerned with new tape acquisitions or new knowledge regarding the Dead. We were a group obsessed with the band and everything swimming through the vast universe of the band, including apparently any Losers with the “sweet Suzy” line. My memory is foggy when it comes to my findings of the “sweet Suzy” Losers, except one distinct time in which I can remember telling her, “Hey, Shannon, I found a ‘sweet Suzy’ for you.” I don’t know which show it was , but I’m pretty certain it was a 1971 Loser. What lives in my memory is precisely where we were and me saying those exact words to her. It must’ve been a revelatory moment for me regarding the rarity of the “sweet Suzy” Losers, for I have never forgotten that moment after 20+ years. Fast forward to a few months ago, in June of 2017, when I found myself thinking of those great tape-trading days of high school, the discoveries, the euphoria of acquiring a new batch of tapes. And for some reason my mind turned to the “sweet Suzy” versions of Loser, and how I would search out copies of this song without a handy Deadbase at my fingertips, nor a more convenient “etree mobile” app which allowed me to effortlessly flip through shows and fast forward to the two particular instances in which “sweet Suzy” is sung with the simply movement of a finger across my iPhone. Wow, how times have changed with regard to searching for a particular part of a song. So a few months ago I decided to complete the project once and for all. I needed to know when “sweet Suzy” died, and I kind of wanted to arrive at a reason for her death. Sadly, I found her apparent death on October 20th, 1974, then realized she had risen from the dead on January 10th, 1979, only to be buried once again for eternity. Even more tragic is the unknown reason for her death. What I did find, however, is an obscure protraction of her death. Think about all the hours I’ve logged listening to “Last fair deal in the country, sweet Suzy!” and the amount of accumulated thoughts about Suzy, what she must’ve looked like to Hunter and Jerry, what she must’ve meant to Jerry on the nights that he sung her into the song with such love and tenderness and longing, what she must have meant to him on the nights that he abandoned her and left the audience singing her in their own empty words, and what he must’ve thought on January 10th, 1979 when he resurrected her one last time. What drove him to do it? The Dead performed Loser 346 times. Only a few of these shows do we not have the recording. I tally 88 known Losers that include the “sweet Suzy” or just “Suzy” line. Remarkably, of the 54 Losers performed in 1971, only one show did not feature the “sweet Suzy” line. That show is 7/2/71 at the Fillmore West, oddly the last show at that venue. The very first Loser performed on 2/18/71 at Port Chester features a “sweet Suzy” in the first slot and a rare “Suzy”-only in the second slot. All three “Suzy”-only versions were sung in the second slot of the song in 1971, but of the three remaining “Suzy”-only versions in 1972 and 1973, Jerry sang it in the first slot of the song. The first show in which Jerry sings “sweet Suzy” in only one of the two slots is the 22nd performance of Loser on 4/21/71 in Providence, Rhode Island, and it appears in the second slot. There are no other shows or patterns in 1971 of note except to say that toward the middle of the year, immediately following the 7/2/71 Fillmore West show, Jerry starts to exclude the “sweet Suzy” line in one of the two slots more frequently. Between 2/18/71 and 5/30/71, Jerry performs Loser 31 times, and he is fairly regular with the “sweet Suzy” line in all of the Loser versions, singing it both times in all but 2 of the 31 times. But once 7/2/71 hits, the remaining 23 performances of the song are variable when it comes to the singing of the line. Between 7/2/71 and 12/31/71, Jerry sings the line twice during the song only 13 of the 23 times. What this means is that Jerry started the slow death of “sweet Suzy” officially on 4/21/71, booted her from the song for the first time altogether on 7/2/71, and then proceeded to ween her from the song thereafter. 1972 sees the demise of Suzy even more. Of the 39 times Loser is played in 1972, only 4 times does Jerry sing “sweet Suzy” in both slots of the song. 13 times he abandons “sweet Suzy” entirely. 1973 isn’t any better. 25 performances, 7 “sweet Suzy” lines, and none of those 7 times does Jerry sing the line in both slots of the song. 1974 saw “sweet Suzy” virtually die. Of the 10 times Loser is performed (remember, there were only 40 shows this year), only 3 times does “sweet Suzy” make her appearance, the last being on 10/20/74 at Winterland, and it’s sung in the second slot of the song. I fitting farewell to the Grateful Dead at the time and to sweet Suzy, whoever she was. And that is all we know of the mysterious girl called Suzy in the song Loser. For the next 4 years and 45 performances of Loser, not a trace of “sweet Suzy” is found – that is, until the first show of 1979, in Uniondale, New York, on January 10th. Making her appearance one more time – and her last time – was “sweet Suzy” in the first slot of the song. It’s so brief and nondescript. If you blink, you miss it in the recording. There’s no emphasis, no powerful resurgence, no eruption from the audience. It comes and goes in a second and a half. And then it vanishes. Ghostlike. Forever. I knew I had never heard a “sweet Suzy” in the 1980s or 1990s, but I wanted to be sure, and so I listened to all the “Last fair deal in the country….” verses (two per song) of all 169 remaining performances. I sometimes dreamed that I’d find one, hidden within a show that was not on many popular radars. I held out hope that there was a version of the song in the post-Brent era that escaped our listening ears because it was a Vince show. No. I sometimes imagined I heard it because I was listening so hard for it. I truly wanted it to be there. I wanted so badly for Jerry to sing those two words again; I’d even take a delayed and whispered “Suzy.” Alas, it wasn’t going to happen. I have thought about so much along the way. I thought how crazy I am for doing this. I thought how empty this project is. I thought how meaningless and stupid and utterly ridiculous….In short, I thought I had perhaps come to an end of sorts with the band. When I began the journey, I actually was listening to 3/24/73 Spectrum and noticed that Jerry had only sung the “sweet Suzy” line in the second slot. And so I wanted to know what other shows in the March/April ’73 period did this. And then I wanted to know all of 1973. And then I decided I’d do all of the Losers and tally them all up. I searched high and low on the Internet to see if someone had already done this. I found no one. But, above all, I felt like I had to do this. I was reminded of my high school years, and always bringing Shannon new “sweet Suzy” Losers. I simply felt it was my calling to know them all. So, Shannon, if you’re out there, and happen to stumble across this, here are all your “sweet Suzy” and “Suzy”-only Losers. Enjoy… Below are the years and dates in which “sweet Suzy” or just “Suzy” appear. After the date, you’ll see a “1” or “2” or “none,” indicating for that particular show where “sweet Suzy” is sung, “1” being the first slot and “2” being the second slot of the song. “None” obviously means neither slot of the song featured this line. If you see a “Suzy” next to either the “1” or “2,” then that means just the rare “Suzy” was sung. For the inaugural Loser on 2/18, I like that “sweet Suzy” was sung in the first slot and just “Suzy” was sung in the second slot. There are a few shows in which we do not have the recording of Loser: 10/21/72, 11/18/72, 9/12/73 (this one is unclear as to whether the song was player there at all, but I kept it in anyway), 9/28/77, and 2/6/79. Other than those, they’re all here. The penultimate note: the Loser from 5/11/78 does not feature a “sweet Suzy” but rather a Jerry “Yeeeeaaaahhh Arrrrgghhhh” which is the only one of its kind. 10.1.94's intro into Fire On The Mountain....

....the midi flute Garcia plays is beautiful. Then it goes into the mutron tone we all know, then back into a mutron/flute thing. Jerry plays two different tones at once. Pretty neat and pretty incredible. Miss you. I can see how someone's first show being this one could hook you. God bless the GOGD.

"Wait a minute kids while we get this just exactly perfect..."

I love it when Bob would say that. I wonder if Deadbase lists how many times he spit that out from the stage. It was tongue in cheek, and endearing. This was a raggedy bunch folks. This music was only ever perfect in it's glorious humanness, flaws and warts and all. I play lots of guitar. There's a thing called, "relicing," where you can pay the Fender Custom Shop or some guy in his garage to scuff up your brand-new guitar and make it look old. Like some clown who goes and buys "distressed" jeans at the mall. Please... my guitars get beat up because I play the hell out of them, and except for my Gibsons (only because the string tension against the angled headstock can snap the neck if they fall over), I don't give a shit if one of the kids knocks it off the couch or a drink spills on it or whatever. I love that stuff. Gives an item character. I will no longer even pick up certain people's guitars. I feel they would experience a cardiac event if my nails (I play with a heavy hand) should leave microscopic scratches in the finish. Museum pieces all, never to be - gasp! - really played or used as the medium of expression they were designed for. Just ask the collectors who keep these "investments" in humidors, to be looked at only, and just don't you dare stare too hard in any one place for very long. I bought a brand-new truck in 2002. For months, I would park at the edge of the lot and struggle in vain to keep it perfect. Once I finally let that shit go, it was a tremendous relief. My $100 Jimmy Page coffee table book arrived damaged from UPS, they'd crushed the box and there's about a 1" divot on the cover. So what? Now when my friends thumb through it I don't cringe if they haven't washed their hands. I understand paying money for something and appreciating it being in new condition, but some of this borders on the obsessive and misses the point. Warren Zevon was just like that, with the T-shirts. Joey Ramone. It's OCD and a few other insanities rolled into one. I respect that we are different, and I don't know if I find these gripes with product minutiae annoying or just hysterical... but I guess with the Dead fanbase, you get that in all kinds of ways. One of my discs does have a flaw, there's like a metallic shriek/white noise in some song. Maybe more than one. I wouldn't know which, because with many thousands of songs I just skip ahead to the next one. I can't be bothered enough to care. It's all about the music...

First world problems... yawn

This morning I got up and put on what I thought was a perfectly crisp, clean white T-shirt. Imagine my horror upon discovering a stray eyelash had fallen onto the left shoulder, and to top it off a tiny wrinkle was discovered below the right underarm. Then, at lunch my Big Mac arrived shoddily assembled. The cheese was unevenly melted and not at all centered on the patty! And the pickles had been hastily thrown on and I think there may have even been a few brown sesame seeds atop the bun.

First songs from set

I got this show in a tape trade about 30 years ago (Portland 1974), and it was incomplete, missing 6 or 7 songs. A few years ago, the complete show started circulating and we all discovered that those tracks were omitted because the vocals were seriously low and I guess someone thought they'd do us all a favor and leave them out. The songs that were left out correspond almost exactly to the songs you mentioned. Sounds to me like they did everything they possibly could to match them up with the sound of the rest of the show. It'll never be perfect, but they did a hell of a job and it's nice to hear it sounding so much better. There's just always shit you can't fix when you're working with two-track tapes.

I was guessing either 10/18/72 Fox Theatre (an all timer!) or the Swing.. solely based on Lemieux's SiriusXM roll-out hype for Dave's Picks 28 when he eluded that #29 was one of the all time great shows and will likely be viewed as the best of the series so far.

But I was not the only one calling for the Swing, I think Keithfan was plugging it not too long ago among others.. It is an all-time great show and one of my favorites from all of 1977.

I've been marveling at the Grammy-worthy box packaging for weeks now, and have not had one spare minute to digest the music. I see some comments regarding the mix. I'll reach my own conclusions of course. I'm hoping it's not all that bad, just spotty like so many ancient tapes.

Hi Unkle, Thanks for your response! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who was having trouble hearing Garcia's guitar. There's been some more comments about this issue, and Marye even posted that Dr. Rhino's looking into it, so we''l see what happens. I agree that McIntosh is the way to go when listening to the Dead--especially since it's Owsley-approved, and Garcia always had the glow of blue meters in his rack until very late in his career. I like to think it gets you a little closer to the original sound. It sounds like you have a nice setup, too. Good ol'-fashioned, two-channel systems beat the hell out of a cell phone, crappy earbuds, and lossy mp3s.

Hi MDJim, Thanks for your response! I also thought that if I was getting sound at all, it had to be a problem with the mix. There have been some other recent posts that mention the same Garcia guitar issues, and Marye said that Dr. Rhino is looking into it, so we'll see what happens. While the Dead is truly a group effort whose sum is greater than its parts, and while Garcia was a reluctant leader, without his guitar at least a little bit out front driving and steering the band, some of the magic is inevitably lost.

Pacific NW 73-74 - Replacement disc

Please send me a replacement disc for disc 5 of the boxed set. Mine is defective during China Cat - Rider.

When I say defective, I'm not talking about the mix or missing vocals. The CD skips, gets hung up repeating, stops playing.

Mix

Yes, particularly earlier in the box, the 1973 shows are plagued in spots with strange mixing issues. Whatever is printed on the cd is not "defective," in the disc itself; they chose to burn these shows which undoubtedly had recording issues at the source - loose cable jack into the board/recorder, maybe someone inattentively bumping the faders up and down on the board... at one point, for a few seconds all you hear during one of the "Promised Lands," is Billy's drum track. The vocals and guitar fade in and out and some times the rhythm section is prominent, other times tinny. There is a there there, but I wouldn't allow it to detract from a great box. It's interesting to listen to it like that as much as it is annoying.

What can be done? What will be done? Will they remaster the entire box? Will they send us an "update" that adds Jerry's contribution to the sound? I think not. Nice thought tho, but I highly doubt that anything will be done, take it as it is, or leave it if you dare. I will hold on with my final review until next year, if they haven't done anything by then, nothing will be done. Sad really, no more preorders for me on box sets, listen first, then purchase will be my new coda.

Perhaps I am behind in reading all these posts.. but the mix issues on my CDs seem to match up with the mix issues on the soundboards in the Archive. This means either the problems with the mix exist on the source master reels or all these sound engineers are hitting off the same crack pipe (which I guess is a possibility albeit a slim one). So remixing the entire box would likely yield the same result, but at great expense and causing much confusion for all.

Just to make sure I was not seeing double (hey.. it happens), I took some time to compare the PNW box to my source soundboards that I pulled down from the archive long, long ago. The issues with the mix are consistent comparing one show to the next.

Is this another poke to make sure we have maintained our sense of humor? ….remixing the entire box seems a bit silly perhaps, but not very much fun.

Again, I could be missing something..

One thing comparing my recordings to these did yield.. the PNW box sounds better than what I pulled down. Even the 73 shows sound quite good to me and my system with and without headphones.

Mix issues

I totally understand there may be sound issues with recording sources that are 30-50 years old. Recently we've had the heavy 'reverb' on the GSTL from '77, the splice in Dave's 27, Eyes of the World, which seemed to enrage so many, and now the various issues with PNW. Bill and Donna are high in the mix at times and some say Jerry is too low.
My complaint is on disc 1 of Portland '74. From about halfway into Sugaree thru El Paso the vocals are practically inaudible. Like karaoke versions. Which admittedly is kinda fun in a weird sorta way. But c'mon.
Maybe there should be a page or paragraph or Something in the already included literature by the producer/engineer where they could address and acknowledge some of the issues with a particular release.

What's the old saying? "Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining". And don't say nothing and pretend that everything is just exactlty perfect. By saying Nothing it only makes people wonder if it's only their disc/equipment/ears/delusion.

They should really put these chats right under the product page the way it was previously. There are now less and less posts cause it's simply a headache to find these threads. I think the community is thinning out because of this. Steve Hoffman Forums is a great alternative community for GD superfans who want to chat up these releases or anything else.

Drifters, I see your point too. But I like that show and am still glad it got released. The China>Rider, WRS and Jam after Truckin' are very nice and I really like the young Peggy-O's which are somewhat special and rare. The fade is on the source recording so the choice is whether to release the show or not.. all the remastering in the world is not going to bring the vocals up in the mix.

Dicks Picks used to place a caveat emptor on the back of the jewel case regarding sonic anomalies and the ravages of time, etc. The other point to make about some of these box sets is the tendency to make something very good and slip in a show that might not have made it as a Dave's Picks. Sort of slip one in on is. I don't think this is the case for this box, but 30 Trips had a couple of these. For $30 a show, and being a bit of a completist myself I am ok with it.. but I see the other side of things. I am sympathetic but happy to see these old tapes get special treatment. I appreciate the efforts they went through making this sound as good as it can.. but that's just me. One opinion.

Love the latest Dave's Picks.. but a topic for another thread. Talk about exceeding expectations...

I would agree with the points below, but it may also be the fact that there are multiple recent release threads - e.g. this PNW box thread, the DaP 28 thread and the DaP 2019 Subscription threads. Who knows, hopefully it will pick up again.

I see this too, but there is a silver lining.. I am seeing lots of new folks step up and post positive comments, reviews and keep the vibe alive. The yang is there too.. a bit of complaining and the blem CDs and manufacturing error rate provides more than a valid reason to complain. I would consider providing CDs that play a core competency.

Still we get some good with the bad and new inputs and perspective is a good thing. I hope we didn't lose more than we gained.. there are a few I have not seen in a while that consistently added to the mix.

The Pacific Northwest ’73-’74 big box

My big beautiful insane Pacific Northwest box arrived on Thursday afternoon, September 13. I opened it up, examined it for damage or weirdness. I found lots of weirdness, but no damage at all. It was (and is) perfect, but I was busy so I put it away on my living room bookshelf. Yesterday, November 4, I took the box into my office and started ripping and listening to the CDs. This is astonishingly beautiful music. The playing is intense, inspired, and precise, and the clarity and detail of the recordings (as rendered here) are breathtaking. There are some flaws scattered about – dropouts and balance issues – but for me these flaws do not detract at all from the immensity of the greatness of this box of beauty. These are among the greatest Grateful Dead recordings I’ve ever heard (and I have 288 hours of Grateful Dead recordings ripped so far). So thank you for this fantastic effort. A lot of work and care went into this, obviously. Similar to some of the Mosaic boxes of classic jazz recordings, this one is for people who want to hear all of it, not just curated highlights.

I too have had 2 issues with…

I too have had 2 issues with this box set. 1 - my booklet had been bent during packing and I have 1 defective disc Disc 17 (disc 1 of 5/21/73 Seatle. Big scuff mark and skips on track 9 and fails to pick up on track 10 /11 / 12 after skipping.)

Got the standard response from Rhino - filled in the forms and nothing back from them yet. Both complaints now over 30 day s outstanding - any advice on how to proceed.

BTW -- a lot of fantastic music on this set -- but also a lot of recordng issues -- most of which have been already mentioned. This too is making me question whether to buy complete boxes in future ??

Disc replacements

If you need replacements just reply to the email you received with your shipping tracking number.
Within a few hours you will get an automated response (from a robot) and within about 2 days you will get an email telling you that it will take at least 2 weeks due to the high volume of replacements that they have to send out.
That email comes from Eric, who may be a robot, I don’t know because I wasn’t able to see the results of his reCAPTCHA exam.

Replacement Discs

Just to give credit where credit is due, I had a defective disc in this PNW box and have received a replacement without any real hassle after contacting Dr. Rhino via email. If you got a defective disc, I can reassure you that they seem to be making it right. Had defective discs on DaP 28 as well and for that they emailed back an automated form to fill out after I sent Dr. Rhino my initial email. It took about a month for me to receive the PNW replacement disc.

This box is well worth any hassle of replacing defective discs, there is really not a weak show in the box from my point of view. Currently spinning the Portland '73 show and it really hits the spot for me.

Still waiting on replacement CDs

I have now purchased 2 box sets in hopes on having one be completed. I have been in contact with Doc Rhino and now with Daniel, been since September, now I'm told it could be another 2 to 4 weeks... One box is being returned and now I have to submit a form to replace 2 discs on the second box.
So not happy with all the hoops I have had to jump through.

In my box, disc 2 of 6/22/73 is defective. I wrote to Rhino on October 17th. I received an e-mail on November 8th informing me of the shipment of the replacement disk. Today, November 20, I still have not received it.

I am very disappointed.

Digital Issues

I purchased the digital download. After successfully solving an initial issue with the PITB download, I’m now noticing the complete loss of vocal tracks, specifically on Sugaree, Jack Straw and IMHBTR on 5/19. There could be others. Is this normal or a digital glitch?

Hey Sincie.. you are not hallucinating, the vocal dropouts you mention exist on the source master reels.. there are a few more on the first couple songs of a few shows.

Since they exist on the source tapes, there is nothing the digital wizards can do to correct it, short of bringing Jerry back from the dead and have him do a few vocal overdubs.

Pacific Northwest Box Set Disc flawed

Finally listening to 6/22/73 from the Northwest box set. Disc 2 has flaw. I notice there are other comments to the same. Is anyone getting replacement discs?? I remember back when that happened to a Dick’s Picks and a replacement disc was sent out without asking.

It took awhile, but I did get a replacement for a defective disc in this box. Probably worth giving the whole box a listen before contacting customer service or Dr. Rhino, as different people seemed to have different defective discs, and sometimes more than one.

ahh, yes. 74 Eyes of the World are one of the first things that really got me hooked. It was an early boot I had (Louisville '74) and it has never gotten old.

I keep trying to move on from this box.. (ok, not trying all that hard to do this..), but the way my life is, I have all these little digital compartments to listen to music on. ..and they are all currently loaded with some portion of this box. So without thinking I the handy device I reached for (tonight) happened to have Portland loaded and I listened to the China Rider through WRS>Let It Grow.

Sometimes I think we live in the Garden of Eden.. what a great era, warts and all.

The enthusiasm you all have for this music is awesome. May you never lose it. I found an incredible 1976 box with 5 shows on 12 discs for a great price and the sound is excellent. I'm totally digging in.

Got my Rolling Stones tickets. Taking our sons, it will be their first concert. And Grandma is going, too, so there will be three generations there.

I would like it to be the Dead, as well, but the boys are always telling me to turn it off - that and jazz. Their little ears haven't quite gotten wrapped around it all yet, but, Jumpin' Jack Flash gets them going every time.

I've noticed that the first…

I've noticed that the first set of 5/19/74 Portland, that's disk 14 in the Pacific Northwest Box, has three or four songs in which it's very hard to hear the vocals, especially Jack Straw and the next three or four songs. Anybody else notice this? I've tested the disk on different devices so I don't think it's my devices that are causing the problem. Disk 15 is okay, so I think the problem is not with the original recording, it's with the mixing on Disk 14 ?????
