Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Well worth the price
I contacted David Lemieux last year and he was telling me that he was lobbying for this release. I had no idea it would come about this soon. To be honest, when he told me about it I thought it would cost $600-800 and I would have been willing to pay that. So $450 to me, is a steal. Rockin' The Rhine retails here for $32, which is a justifiable price point (albeit a high one) for individual shows. If one were to purchase all the shows at that price, including shipping it would be way more than $450 - the same is true even if they were $25 a pop (although there is NO indication that they will sell individual shows at this point). Now am I a trust fund baby? Technically, yes. But I can't touch that money for another 11 years, so that's a stupid argument. Do I have a baby on the way this year? Yes, but I can set aside $50 a month with a bit of planning. I also earned a Ph.D. by age 28, so I like to think that I'm not an idiot and know a few things about hard work and sacrifice (a grad student budget is pretty much at or below the poverty line). As someone who never saw the Dead with Jerry the vault releases are the only chance I have to hear the master work. I buy everything that comes out and I'm working on my back catalog too (PLEASE RE-STOCK DP 25, 28, 32, and 34, for starters - If they've sold out, there's obviously a demand for them). Of course I've asked Rhino about this (as well as a box set of ALL the bonus discs from over the years - low production costs, limited packaging, a fair price - I'd buy it, especially for the Beyond Description bonus disc, which is phenomenal) and all I've been told is that they're re-ordering (although in 3-4 months there's still no evidence of this). Am I a completist? As much as possible, yes. Do I enjoy collecting CDs as a hobby? Yes. As a trained historian, I also understand the importance and value of having these sorts of things and being able to pass them along to successive generations. I am in no way going to a look a gift horse in the mouth and complain about this, or any other release. I place these things in a broader context, but I understand that not everyone does. To each their own, but simply because one can't afford this or disagrees with the tactics of GDP/Rhino does not mean that those entities are wrong or bad. It seems that the entitlement mentality is not just the province of the millennial generation (Yes, I'm technically a millennial). The Dead were, are, and will continue to be a capitalist enterprise. That's not to say they're an exploitative one, and most would agree they are quite a unique entity, but it is unfair to impose our values on to them. In graduate school I had one professor who always reminded us that we had to be careful when criticizing another's work, that you have to limit your criticism to the story they wrote and not the one YOU think they should have written. The same basic idea applies here. If you don't like the story, don't read the book (or buy the release). Just because it's not EXACTLY how you like it, does not mean it's wrong. Now what about that Spring 90 box set? LBX "Is maith an scéalaí an aimsir." Time is a great storyteller. -- Irish Proverb

    huh?
Well, I know it's not the expected form to be negative, but this $450 thing blows my mind. I just can't see it as a good thing. There must be a Grateful Dead corporation out there whose focus is to analyze the actuarial tables of the aging and presumably prosperous Dead Head population and pragmatically decide when to release the old shows. If they did it all at once they wouldn't maximize their profit because everyone would share. If they wait too long we'll all be dead. What's the point of it all? I'd like to think that from the viewpoint of us listeners to focal point is the music, and the joy and transcendent experience of life that it brings. So what's up with offering this music in one huge collection for so much money, as opposed to breaking it up into affordable segments? I already have the original "Europe '72", "Steppin' Out With the Grateful Dead, Europe '72" and "Rockin the Rhine with the Grateful Dead" in 1972. So if I wanted more of that tour I'd hate to double up on what I already have purchased? Why not just offer what what hasn't been released, from that '72 tour, and list it accordingly in the catalogue? I reckon if I was rich I'd be happy to consider buying this new collection, but then I think of all those that struggle to get in to a Furthur show, and the disparity makes me think of other things, like a widening gap of social inequality and opportunity. Elitist comes to mind, as I think of the bedraggled, dreadheaded flock of earnest young folks that I see outside the Furthur shows.

indeed I've found that the communication behind any group of people larger than just about 2 gets confused, diluted, and misrepresented...nobody ever really seems to know what going on when it comes to problems like this and technology it just eventually works. I'm just letting people know what dead.net has said to me...so I keep my fingers crossed for that lucky moment when it finally might work out...I would be that a person who would wait in the cold, rain, and snow for real long time for this to come through

After trying all last night and into the early hours of this morning i finally managed to complete my order at 09:15 GMT. However i have still to receive the confirmation email, and if i click on the order status button i receive an email which just details the last purchase i made (Road trips 4.1). I replied to this email asking about the position regarding my order of Europe 72, but have not received a reply. With the ongoing problems I'm concerned now that in fact my order may not be valid - even though i got the confirmation page and an order number. Is anyone in the same position as me and knows where we stand?

First they make it a limited edition. Then they have an even smaller limited run with personalized dog tags. Then when people start bitching about the $450 price ("Hey, music should be free, man..."), they shut down ordering. Now people are all clamoring to buy the box for $450 ("I hope I can get thru before they are all gone..."), and no one is bitching about the price anymore! @ strider 666 I would say you're better off placing the order again once they have the bugs worked out. Your credit card will not be charged until Sept. After, you can check back with Customer Service and see if they have multiple orders under your account, at which point you would, presumably, cancel an extra ones.

Chill people, you don’t remember the ordering problems when the subscription was announced last month? Almost everything new with the store has its initial problems. With this knowledge, wouldn’t it be better to wait awhile before ordering? I am reminded of the news stories at Christmas time when people are stampeding over each other to get into a store. I realize the panic is due to the limited edition status of this release which invites the scalpers to exercise their greed. I do not agree with the limited edition ploy, but as Mr. Dylan said: Although the masters make the rules, For the wise men and the fools, I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

I think the problem is due to the fact that I inadvertantly ordered 7200, I mistakenly put this number in the checkout box, when this initially went online and it crashed the system. Sorry, but you can now place your orders with me.

It also could be because I have added 7200 sets as I have tried to checkout 7200 times.

Thank you very much for this release, that being said I wonder how many buyers who would have bought yesterday, won't today due to not being able to order. Now that I have had time to sleep on it, plus checking the number of these shows I already have, I'm gonna have to think about it some more. Don't get me wrong, this is the Holy Grail, I would love to have it, but with Furthur tour this spring, RT's being released plus the cost of everything going up, up, up, I just can't justify the cost right now, hopefully others will commit to this so this will be released, but I was just wondering how many sales were lost due to the store not being able to handle the traffic, you would think after the snafu's during 30 days that these issues would have been resolved. All good things in all good time, I guess. And what's up with Rolling Stone and others scooping this web site again? I think it's kinda strange in this day and age that print media can be faster than the internet. On another note, while trying to buy yesterday, did anyone notice that little box that says "add another box set"? I kept adding and got up to 15 before I stopped, with what seems like no limit to the number that you can buy, man, I wish I had a couple of grand laying around, the resale on these are going to be off the charts if you look at the Filmore box set resale values now. Why only 7200? Is this a majic number? Would it cost a whole lot more to release say 10,000? I think I will research this a little, just for s#%*!'s and giggles. tptb have all ready put up for the mastering etc.., how much does it cost to cut cd's? I remember hearing years ago that they cost about 3 cents a disc to print, if that is true, doesn't make much sense to me to only print 7200. Another idea has been shared here, less fluff, more music, maybe a release of just the music minus all the other stuff could be forthcomming, for say, 150 bucks less, that would Imho, increase sales if that's what Rhino wants. I think the personalization thing is a little weird, I can see, 35 yrs from now, some guy on ebay offering a personalized limited edition europe 72 complete tour package that was Phil's copy, or Bobby's copy or even, Jer's copy. Ha, that would be a hoot. I like the idea of these being available as single shows, like said before, with limited listening time, it would take quite a few months to listen to all of this once, not including those times you just got to hear that jam one more time which I am sure there are several of those here. Hopefully, they will let us cherry pick the shows we would like to have after this limited edition is released. That would be the kind thing to do.

Yes and it's too good to be true. I was able to complete the order process early this morning around 3:30AM Central. I even got a confirmation number! Alas, but no e-mail confirmation from Dead.Net. It turns out the system being used for this promotion is a new and entirely different system from that used for Road Trips, etc. After talking to a customer service rep this morning, he couldn't find any trace of my order confirmation. Oh well, I hope they don't charge me for it after I place another order. Best Wishes-Jimmy

as stated by direwulf, c.s. also told me if I signed up to be notfied by email when we could order,I should wait for the email, then order... sounds so simple.... however with $450.00 price tag is it safe to assume those who order must be gainfully employed in some way and perhaps cannot stay online constantly to welcome the email ? my patients tend to get a bit testy if I use my med computer shop online while they are waiting for relief...I feel like preventive medicine could have been used by the webgods like proving the system before unleashing such a sought after item for online purchase - but we will patiently wait -after many many years of following the dead what is another millenium? A friend of mine made the common-sense suggestion that the music could also be sold on a hard drive! Lots of interesting possibilities there; say, a 50 GB portable drive with all the music, photos, essays, etc. Sure, the packaging as proposed has appeal, but the hard drive would allow for more folks to get the music, with at least an alternate cost to the band (in bulk you'd have to think the drive wouldn't cost more than $50 or so, maybe even less). Just a notion . . . Not to worry, though, I'll be buying it!

I'm with Frampton's friend. I've been pushing for hard drive releases for a while. My favorite idea is a Complete Simpsons hard drive with plenty of room to add additional seasons. So, how about a Giant Grateful Dead hard drive and a subscription that sends you a new show once a month till you've got em all.

I don't remember how many Summer 72 releasaes I have but I'll be have a'nuff to have them all at my fingertips!! At $450 for 60 discs it will be well worth it. They don't make this easy....first, "buy now....limited edition" then putative attempts to buy....then "e-mail if you're interested".

Could be 7,200 will log in at once, or even 8,000, or 3000 will log in and by 2 or more sets a piece and all the sets are sold.

Just looking at the rough sketch of the packaging, this box of CDs is going to be huge. You might need to clear out some serious storage space in order to find room for the Europe 72 box. If you decide to take a flight somewhere, you might mistake this box set for your luggage.

I don't know what they told you DS 1971, but I actually did a get an order through not too long ago. Now, I had the cart page up before they went back back to the email only link. Just for craps and giggles, I went ahead and tried checking out and I got all the way through the process, with a confirmation number and everything. I than called CS, gave them the confirmation number and was told that all of their confirmation numbers end in J322. The one I received did not end in that, and they could not find anything about my order in the system. As others have stated, he also said that they cannot place any orders by phone for it as well. Alas, we are all very much in the same boat, and this includes customer service. You can call 'em, but they don't know anymore than we do. They are waiting for to hear from IT that the ordering system is good to go, just like we are. So, unless you have some confirmation from customer service, I do not beleive that any orders have gone through. As of now, there are still a full allotment to be ordered. Fret not folks, and think this through with a little logic. If they really sell out of 7200 of these things, do you not think they will add more. Yes, this is a statment, not a question. Rhino is a for profit organization, and if something with this type of price tag sells out that fast, you can be 100% certain, they are going to make more available. Everyone that is willing to fork out the dough should feel pretty confident that they are going to get one. So take a deep breath, and relax.

Dilbert, weren't you the one during the warlocks release who said they could get this stuff cheaper on Ebay since the bonus discs were not being offered anymore?

Here is the message I got last night: "WOW. The servers cannot take your enthusiasm (we, on the other hand, appreciate it immensely.) The dead.net team is toiling on the back end to accommodate the massive traffic and to ensure that the purchase of the Europe '72 box is a breeze. In the meantime, you can click through to the landing page to leave your email addy. We will notify you the moment we begin taking orders again."

Since it appears this is not yet for sale, there is no reason for shipping options, and therefore no reason for international ones. Or maybe it's just me, but I don't see any shipping or purchase options. Musically, this seems a bit much -- a whole tour? Really? But it is what some people have been asking for, and here's the chance to put money on the table & prove it. If there were to be one tour released in its entirety, this would be the one -- not because every date is indispensable, nor even because it isn't well-represented already (12 solid discs of official releases), but just because this was one helluva tour - and arguably the hinge of their career & development. While most of us have most of these shows (if not all), it would be very welcome to have versions of Rotterdam & the Lyceum shows as well-mixed as STEPPIN' OUT was. I myself would have settled for about half, but even that would probably have overlooked some of my pet favorites (Munich & Newcastle); the only way to satisfy everyone is this. And if you figure about $10 per disc (as previous box sets have been), this is like getting 15 'bonus discs' for free ;)

What about doing the 7,200 as a limited edition, and then, as someone suggested earlier, open up the music to everyone else via a hard drive or download series? Charge less money for a less frilly version and everyone has access to the music (which is the most important thing) and everyone is happy.

Since the default setting was for OLD COMMENTS FIRST, I hadn't read all the ordering drama when I made my previous post. What really peeves me is that i learned about this from a Facebook comment ... they seem to be rather inconsistent in their email notifications. Anyway, hope this IT problem gets resolved. If it doesn't well -- I've still got all my trade copies, and I'll be $450 richer won't I? :)
