Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!).     Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen.     Echoing Dedicated and Mike Edwards.... There's the steamer trunk full of CD's.....Spring is coming......40 years later....maybe this was the whole idea after all. Take your trunk on a road trip/river cruise/couch tour.....whatever. Paris in the Spring!

    Finally listened to all of it!
    It took me a while - probably longer than it should have done - but I have finally listened to this monster in its entirety. I can happily report 73 fully functioning, unscratched discs and 22 intact, untorn sleeves. In my opinion the whole thing was really well put together. The steamer trunk is great, the hardback book is superb and it is nice to have a copy of "The book of the Dead" at last. My only possible complaints concern the cardboard sleeves which are undoubtedly less than ideal, borne out by the evidence that the more ham-fisted among us have torn many of them, and the lack of additional goodies such as maps etc. That said, it is obvious that if the shows had come in "Digipaks" which are at least twice as thick as the card sleeves then the trunk would also have been twice the size which in turn would have increased the manufacturing and shipping costs. When this thing was first announced it was said to contain more than 60 discs whereas it finally contained 73 which again should have upped the price. As it was too late to do anything about the price, I guess they cut back on the extras to keep it within budget. Personally I find it preferable that the shows have been spread over extra discs to avoid ill-timed disc changes rather than including, say, a map of Europe.As regards the music itself (the whole point of the exercise) it is wondrous. There are no bad shows included merely for the purpose of completeness. Of course some shows are better than others, but there are no shows here that are not worthy of release. It could be said (and indeed it has been said) that there is not a whole lot of variation in the setlists, but that is probably the case in any run of 22 shows. I do not have a problem with 15 excellent versions of a fine song, and when it comes to epics such as "Dark star" the variation in the different renditions is astonishing. That I am fortunate enough to have this box and its wonderful contents makes me one happy man and I congratulate all those responsible for getting it to us. Having said all that, I am aware that some folks had major problems with ordering and receiving their boxes. This is not the first time that such problems have reared their ugly heads, but I hope that Rhino and Globalware have learned from their mistakes this time. As regards the best shows, I would place Rotterdam top of the list, with Amsterdam, Bickershaw, Paris (x2) and The Lyceum (x4) also being superb performances.

Like most of us, I have the majority of the Europe 72 shows on CDR, thanks to trades, other releases and Etree.org. For the most part they are actually all nice sounding soundboards.I'm sure I can find the rest that I don't have sooner or later. All I really need is a complete sbd of Bickershaw Festival 5/7/72. It's in this box set of course but perhaps it will surface somewhere else soon.

Did anybody else buy the Phish "Joy" box that came out a while back? I did- and that thing has been sitting in the floor since I got it...I really dont know what to do with it. All that packaging just for an extra CD and some small posters....excessive!

I awoke this morning at 4am (east coast) and was able to place and pay for my europe 72 order, i have a confimation #. As of yet no confirmation email though and after getting off the phone the guy said emails are slow. I have faith that i'm in!

None of the orders that went through are good. I also had an order go through, confirmation # and everything, called into customer service and they could not find it. Not trying to rain on your parade, but wanted to make sure you were aware of the situation. Now, we all must wait for the almighty email.

$450 is steep, but, at a total of 60+ discs you are paying about $7.50 a disc. That's not too bad for some fine booty shakin' jams. Plus, you know the box set will be way cooler than just a bunch of jewel cases with New Times Roman font labeling. I can't wait to revisit '72 some weekend. That sounds like a good theme for a listening party...Thank you once again Grateful Dead family, Have a swell day all!

I was one of the lucky few that was able to order the Europe 72 box set late last night. I ordered between 3-4am Eastern and got a confirmation number. I also got an immediate funds hold place on my debit card for $450 that is still there. Again, it is a pending charge not a posted transaction yet. So, I thought I was good when I went to bed last night. Then I read various posts here and elsewhere that no orders have executed even if you got a confirmation number, etc. I found that puzzling considering that I have a pending charge for $450 from Dead.net on my debit card. Yet, I still don't have a confirm email at this point. So, I just spoke to Manny in customer service a few minutes ago. He said that there were some people late last night that were able to successfully order it and those orders will be filled. He said they are having issues with being able to track confirmation numbers but if you've got one and you have a pending charge you are going to get the box. I also let him know that I was surprised to see a pending charge due to language on the site yesterday indicating that we wouldn't be charged until September. Manny let me know that it is putting a hold on your card for the full amount when you order just to determine it's a valid card, bank, etc. He said that the hold will drop off in a few days and you won't actually be charged until September. Just a little info for what it is worth to help those of you out with questions....

Somehow, I will make it happen (unless they run out before I can save up the clams)... Look, I WANT the box, but they *need* to release all of these as individuals at some point. I don't think it would be fair to keep that from Heads who want them... That said, I *have* dared dream this, even in the past week or two (especially looking forward to the two Paris shows and Copenhagen)! If I were making bank as in the past, I'd be ordering it in the next month, now, however, I'll be lucky if I can even save the money before Sept.! Hope the rich f345ks who will rarely if ever listen to them (or want to sell them on EBay for outrageous prices later, basically scalpers) don't purchase them all first... CAN I RESERVE A BOX!?! As a longtime, loyal Dead Head, who has purchased literally almost everything, I think loyalty should be rewarded (is that not how the band worked, more or less?). Here's hoping for a miracle, Eric

I'm pretty sure that I recall reading during the Fillmore Box sale process that they would never offer those shows again in a complete show format. The language during the promotion of that box seemed very clear that you had either better get it then or you never would. Luckily, I got my order in early and have a Fillmore box. I've noticed with this Europe 72 box "limited edition" that it never says anything at all about these shows never being available again, etc. So, if you want all the material (as I do) then I would definitely get it now. If that's too much for you to spend or you just want a handful of shows you may want to take your chances that some or all of this material eventually comes out as individual releases, downloads, etc. They are spending a lot of money for Norman to mix 16 tracks on all of these so I would be surprised if they don't eventually release at least some of the better shows in individual releases at some point. Then again...you never know...so get it now if it really matters to you!

Just spoke to a guy at Dead.net customer services re the order i placed this morning. He couldn't confirm that the order had been placed validly. He said they were waiting to hear from the tech guys on this issue, but that if he was a betting guy he would bet that they have not been placed validly as the order numbers they are being quoted do not end in the correct characters/digits. He didn't expect any resolution until tomorrow, but suggested when the service comes back to try ordering another one. If you then ended up with two he said there would not be any problem with cancelling one.

PLEASE preserve some of the natural ("as it occurred") DYNAMIC RANGE of the musical instruments (inc. voices) AS IT OCCURRED DURING THE SHOW! I understand with multi-track, one can make everything "equal" in the mix, but that ain't the way it went down, and it begins to sound claustrophobic when there is not enough "space" and "high end air" in the mix. I'm sure others will echo this sentiment in ways perhaps more eloquent than mine, but THEE NEEDS TO BE PRESERVED SOME OF THE DYNAMIC OF THE CONCERT *as it happened*, and not have EVERYTHINGBOOSTEDTOEQUALVOLUMEALLTHETIME! It fatigues the ear and the mind of the listener!!! Is this NOT basic knowledge of the aesthetics of listening to great music (such as "Classical" musics?). What would Bear say, or Healy? I think they both had great ears in live concert sound, and especially in Bear's case, setting up a recording to record the even AS IT OCCURRED, which is largely the foundation of whatever collective experience was had at the venue on that evening. I understand a little sweetening, perhaps (I'm sure Garcia had his methods), and what would Betty say, for that matter? Or any ol' Cosmic Charlie out there on the streets...? I think Garcia (and/or anyone else responsible) had the mix ALMOST JUST EXACTLY PERFECT when he mixed the first release of Europe '72. That said, the one full show from this run, Dusseldorf, sounds great to my ears, perhaps a bit warmer (in a great way) than "Hundred Year Hall"? I'm just sayin'... "Exile On Main St.", one of the very few other recordings that is as iconic as Europe '72, was MASSACRED upon it's "remaster"...and I listen to it rarely, hurts the ears and fatigues the mind. This is as important to Dead Heads as the Dead Sea Scrolls are to religious scholars... perhaps more.

Eric- I agree with you but I've been pretty pleased with Norman's audio work in the past and have faith that he'll do a great job here. I wasn't pleased with McGinn's work on Crimson, White, and Indigo and am glad to hear he isn't mixing this as that cd sounded way too aggressive imo.

Strider- It's interesting to hear that you got such a different message from customer service than I did. I even brought up the order number ending character issue and he still insisted that if I have an order number and a funds hold (as I do) that I am good. I would be real hesitant to order another of these and potentially be on the hook for another $450 unless if they guarantee your first order doesn't exist. Sure, they might let you cancel but for some people having a temporary hold on their card for $900 might create an issue.

I wonder if the "exclusive goodies" for people that buy this will just be a link/password to listen to some of it early or will it be something more interesting like a dvd, etc? Listening to it early isn't bad but it's not really that exciting. I'm hoping it's some form of exclusive content that is either being sent to us for free or something we can purchase for a reasonable fee.

Hey GD, Why don't you do this Europe 72 set in DSD (Direct Stream Digital) Hybrid so that they sound the best they can and everybody can play them??? SACD's are the closest thing to vinyl that I've heard. How 'bout it???

Just received my fixer-uper email a few minutes ago and signed right up. Now considering what kind of heist I’m gonna pull off to pay for this. If the Devil asked me what giant chunk of music I’d sell my soul to get (although in exchange for my soul, I might have to actually time-travel back and attend these shows in person), it would be the complete Europe ’72 tour. The three-LP set was my 16-year-old self’s favorite album, and I played that sucker to death. Still my favorite Dead album, although the Steppin’ Out compilation from the UK shows is a brilliant companion piece. Now we’ll get the whole thing in scintillating HDCD.... Amazing. Will be fascinating to see how the overdub problems get tackled. Since the 5/3/72 China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider is my favorite Dead track of them all (followed by the 4/8/72 Dark Star), I’m eager to hear what’s included in this humongous box and if that China/Rider is one of the tracks that got sweetened after the tour. This is an amazing and exciting thing to look forward to, and I’m so grateful to have lived this long and to anticipate this with all my Deadhead bros and sistas. (p.s. If you haven’t read Sam Cutler’s memoir, the material about the ’72 is a fascinating way to whet your appetite....)

they NEED NEED to release the copenhagen show that was broadcast on denmark tv as blue-ray/dvd option with this box set ive seen copies of it and if those were the bootlegs then the one they release with this box set should be bomb... i believe that was the show where they wore clown masks to weird out the tv land audiences?!?!

for all those complaining about the price, The Paris shows from the 3rd and the 4th are worth the price alone!!! The Truckin>Other One is a masterpiece....
