Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Another perspective on the greed part
High-priced "boutique" releases seem to be the new rage as record companies keep trying to make money somehow, some way, on the sale of physical recorded media. Right now available for presale is a new Elvis Costello box containing ONE cd, ONE dvd, ONE 10" vinyl ep...that's it for music. A book, poster, something autographed by Elvis. The price on Amazon right now is around $261. Yes, that is not a typo. $261!! Which makes E72 a bargain of the highest order by comparison, despite all the issues. In an interesting turn of events, Elvis has actually disavowed the product. He's recommending on his website that you do not buy this overpriced item, that you spend your money elsewhere, while letting everyone know that the meat in the box, the music stuff, will be available early next year in regular CD and DVD releases. Unless you take the cynical view that Elvis's announcement is disingenuous, that it's just more hype to sell all the versions of the release (and I do not take that view), then let's say "thank you Mr MacManus!"

    any lawyers out there?
I think it is time for a petition to be set up and signed by all involved stating that if this is not rectified, there will be a class action law suit, Here, let me start:Dear Rhino and all involved in the production of Europe '72, the complete recordings: We, as deadheads, will not stand for this joke of a production. We did not receive what was promised, we did not receive any promised packaging, extras or even scratch free discs that played. You, as a business, made promises that were not kept, took everyone's money and produced an inferior product void of any promised packaging. Therefore, you are not entitled to any money for this product. Here, let me be the first to sign this: Unkle Sam I repeat, do not pay for this, it is not what was promised.

Skimpy, too tight cardboard and gluey sleeves that rip the first time you remove the scratched CDs, this is what we received. "The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour." Wow one 3inch round sticker. And a BONUS, terrible customer service to boot. This makes you think twice before spending another dime on Rhino products.

I'd like to chime in on the video suggestion. As Jerry might have said or actually did say-" Man, That would be the coolest" There seems to be a tease in the promotional material that hints at something -60+ discs. Maybe I'm reading tea leaves with that but who knows. Anyway-I am super psyched about this release. This tour was in overdrive as far as I am concerned-this is the music that should be put into the space probes to show the advance of western civilization to those potential alien lifeforms out there who might encounter it and have the means to access it (along with Mozart and Beethoven, of course).

Since this being promoted as “The Biggest Dead Release Ever!”, I would hope that Dead.net / Rhino are not just going to place the remastered Europe ’72 concerts back into their Vault after the 7200 copies are gone, but will be offer some sort of non-limited version of the music for the general public (individually packaged shows, downloads (flac) or better yet both). Non-limited versions would be a win-win for Dead.net / Rhino and the general public who want to purchase the music.

...Screw the fancy box set... As a matter of fact screw the CDs all together. Sell this phenomenal body of music as flac files already loaded onto a small (50 Gig) external hard drive... you know... one of those mini usb jobs that fit in your shirt pocket and doesn't need external power beyond what comes thru the usb port. That should cut your production costs WAY DOWN!

I'm buying this set and I hope the individual shows are NOT released separately from the box set, at least not all of them! Because: 1) It's not going to make money for the GDM/Rhino, and I want GDM/Rhino to prosper so that they continue to release material; 2) Releasing all 22 of those shows separately would inevitably reduce the flow of non-72 shows. Chew on it, whiners!

Well, the Rhino business deal has officially jumped the shark. Yes, this is great, but what about something normal folks can afford? Folks who would like the music but can do without the unnecessary, price-jacking packaging. Anyone looked out the window & noticed the economy lately? I guess once this is officially released that's the end of access to any Europe '72 music on archive.org. This is the Dead's music; they are free to do what they want, no complaints there. But this is looking more like business and less like Grateful Dead.

Submitted my information ten minutes after reading the email announcment on 1/21, and no confirmation email yet. Sign in and see the pop-up about the "technical difficulties with the order cart" and asked to submit the information again. Love to see some comments as we go along the process so us folks know if the line is moving. Shout out if you get the confirmation emails - or not. The USB drive as a format for this, or more likely for future mass releases is one of the best comments I've read - Less packaging and cost so more music can get out there. Less excuse for big $ prices but that's not what this is about, right?

can't imagine that they'd go through all the work on the mastering of these shows to not offer individual releases one day. I'll wait for those instead I think.I'd rather have the 25 greatest shows as a mega release personally or the complete closing of Fillmore East run or closing of Winterland run.

There is absolutely nothing in this press release that says, "This is the only way we will ever release complete shows from the Europe Tour of 1972. Buy this entire set for $450 or else, because once we sell 7,200, they are gone." Is it not clear to any rational thinking Dead Head that after they remaster 22 shows, they will want to sell more than 7,200 copies of it? THINK, people. So many are so busy just getting mad that if they had any common sense, it has flown out the window. Regarding the mini hard drive: This might be a good idea, but can you imagine the bitching here if they did that? "I can go on newegg and get a hard drive for $39, and Rhino has the nerve to charge $250? They aren't even giving me a nice box to put it in. It's just computer hardware." Regarding the "60+ discs": I used to have most of these shows, and several of them were four discers, and none of the shows were short. I would imagine, although I haven't gone back and looked, that virtually all of the shows will take at least three discs and a couple will take four. So it will likely be more than 60 discs. Regarding the "I hope they don't screw with the song order in order to fit them on fewer discs" worry: Pu-lease. When have they ever done that with a box set? Do you really think they are going to have "disc 4: end of set 2 from 4/17/72 and beginning of set 1 from 4/18/72?" Or anything other than "Set 1, then set 2, then encore?" The cost of discs is de minimis. When you issue a premium product like this, for $450, you don't try to shave 50 cents off the cost by squeezing music into one less disc. Regarding the "I placed my order the nano second that I heard about it and haven't gotten back a confirmation email. I'm FREAKING OUT that I'm going to be left out of this whole deal!!!!": 7,200 is plenty to go around. $450 is a lot of dough. Re-freakin'-lax! Take a deep breath! It will all be ok. I can hardly believe with the lack of faith by so many on this board that they are actually interested enough in the Good Ole GD to be here in the first place.

"Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible)." "Proper show contexts" suggests correct song order - but why don't they just say that? And I guess the "where possible" means that the original 16 track recordings of some of the songs from that album were unavailable and they had to use the overdubbed tapes? Sometimes TPTB give too much information and end up raising more questions than they answer. They should have just taken a survey instead of trying to get 3000 committed sales - and my personalized copy is allegedly confirmed but no credit card info hasn't been transmitted so at least one of those 3000 isn't written in stone. Hell, if they aren't taking the money until September *none* of the sales are firm.

"Elitist comes to mind, as I think of the bedraggled, dreadheaded flock of earnest young folks that I see outside the Furthur shows." Elitist? Yeah, it comes to mind. Some of us think we're pretty special. But if you were Deadicated all your life you gotta throw'em a bone. I don't fit the catagory. The old heads shake their bones long as they got them hydrocodones! (lol) re: Comment on what has already been released - noted! But the whole enchilada with ruffles and flourishes is the cat's whiskers for me. As long as we don't have to finance it! Hey now - All this talk / news / excitement inspired me to dig out "Steppin' Out"...and damn I miss Pigpen man. E72 is THE best. Cannot wait for this set to come out. Just hope I get one. I "reserved" one a couple days ago (and received a confirmation email that I do have one reserved - one of the first 3K), but I can't help but feel that its bogus because according to the site you can STILL reserve one of the first 3K...even NOW... ...which seems impossible. Fingers crossed!

I think the thing about "context" is simply to say that songs from Europe 72 (the album), or from Stepping Out, will be parts of their original shows, rather than that type of "compilation." I don't see anything nefarious in that term.

I don't know whether anybody has picked up on the fact that the 05/11/72 show contains what is reputedly the longest ever version of Dark Star - that's got to be a massive bonus it itself. Has anyone worked out what the total Dark Star time is for this release? I'd guess we're talking about 4 to 5 hours worth - is that not worth the price of the admission alone.

mention 5/11, I just threw on the Dark Star for about thirty seconds last night - you know, for grins - and they were already way into it. I just love that one. As I read this thread, how much fun these shows are. Sitting here reading, listening to the excellent Miller SB of May 18, 1972 at Kongressaal at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, West Germany. I'm sure that the 16 track professionally mastered and mixed recording will be crispy and clear, and they will bring lots of enjoyment to those that have never heard these shows. Some of us will have to pass on this mega release due to finacial considerations, (like having a daughter in college and laying out a couple of hundered bucks for four tickets to go to see Furthur during their up coming tour) but that's OK since there are so many decent copies of these shows already out there. The remaining members of the band have moved on and dumped the hassel of putting out the archive stuff to Rhino, and Rhino is doing what any real record company would do. Making money from a massive collection of material left in their care. It's sortta like the Filmore 10 cd release only bigger. A few years down the way some of these shows might show up as individual releases, other classic runs will remain forever out of circulation (1980 Radio City since someone erased and taped over the masters) All I know is that I was fortunate enough to see this great band so many times over the years and I still love all the music they made. I know I'll never get to hear every note from every show they ever did and that's OK. Those that are able to get this, way to go! Those that can't, it's OK since there are great copies of these show available to enjoy. They might not have been the best at what they did, but they were the only ones that did what they did. On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

Having gone from walking up to the door, buying a ticket and walking in toStanding in line at the door to Standing in line at the record store and then standing happily in line at Winterland for hours to Various mail in arrangements and waiting anxiously forever to find out yes or no to Alerts so as to get on top of whatever so as not to miss out on the last 2 NYE shows, Phil's Birthday, Angel's Camp I was delighted this morning 1/22 at 6am to see the email that announced this Europe release. The early seventies was a particularly favorite time of Dead music for me. I immediately clicked my link and reserved a copy, then called and woke my brother in Oregon so he could do the same. Imagine my dismay when I heard there were issues with all of this. Imagine my furthur, yes, furthur dismay when I (who lives 25 minutes from the old Fillmore) found out here that emails had been sent out on the 19th. After 40+yrs this becomes a somewhat emotional thing. It's not nice to mess with peoples emotions. I would have rather come home and found my dog had left with my best friend!!! Okay my rant is over. Can anyone say if the reservations took? Or is this the mail in version of years gone by with smoke and mirrors? If anyones juevos are being put to the flames for this I have access to thirty hours of Barbara Streisand music......told you I was feeling a little emotional!!! We Love You, We Love You, what a great NYE

This will be the first Dead release I unfortunately won't purchase. Although I like the selection I already possess the majority of the shows with official releases and soundboards the $$ price is the deciding factor. With all the Dead releases, Boxsets, Soundbards, Deadpods in my possession I can't possibly justify this release and just justify the $$. I will continue to purchase the RT series and other Vault releases which are good values. Good luck on this project. A few of my fellow Dead Head friends also are of the same opinion.

lonel Far out! when I really could afford hitch-hiking around England never missed a Pig-Pen unDead period gig or after since 72.So it came as the greatest blessing we'll be able to listen to those entirely magic moments. I do regard as epical steps of the long trip as it got to wonder far reaching to such a best hidden secret that nothing but the Dead did ever get so high as some may be able to be taken back to the garden's greatest music that ever was let free.Being able to afford such brilliant effort or not at least it makes me happy that some will,if for the sake of a moment we all could be back there for a second again.Dead music rings in the mind forever and the future will make it all more affordable, whatever way it has to happen here now anyway but thought as I found out such monumental feat was coming I could share my spirited and long time wait, but, now may be harsh unless we organize a communal purchase, maybe.

Hey there. So I got the Europe 72 release email and tried to login. My old Dead.net account no longer functions (I bought a disc a month ago). So I created a new account and am now logged in but I don't see how to order the Europe 72 Boxed Set. Is it possible that all 7200 copies (at $450 no less) are already sold out? Please tell me now! Any clue out there? Oh and Dead.net folks: I love the music from Europe '72. BUT, is there any chance you could do something similar from 1977? IMHO, that was the year that defines the MUSIC. Gratefully yours! -Ron

i bet they are not sold out, just took everything off line to get thru the pre-orders. i seriously doubt 7200 have been ordered so far, MAYBE 3000. and another piece of advice, when they say they are out, keep checking. during the filmore box set, they sold out, weeded out multiple orders, those who ordered more than 3 i think, etc, and put it back out there. i'm just sayin. and 3rdly, i bet if they did get 7200, they'll change their mind and do more, but who knows... personally, i think this is great. thanks!

I am now waiting for the code... I got the email that within 48 hours i will be sent a code necessary for placing the order... I hope I am one of the first 3,000 but the emial really did not indicate... I, for one, will justify the cost of this package by saying, this is not just for me... but for my older brothers that turned me on to the dead in 78 and for my children that have dancing bear night-lights and will one day treasure this as I do... and remember me when they hear it... Another justification... How much would 2 Furthur tickets + meals + hotel + misc :-) + gas cost in February if I Trucked to VA or NC with a friend? about $450..... I'll take the Europe 72 Box please... Nothin' left to do but :-) :-) :-)

This is complete BS. I received the email to reserve a copy of Europe 72 and never got a confirmation back. Now I can't order it? This is a total sham.

I just received my order code, I successfully ordered Europe '72. A word to the wise, I skimmed right over the section where you can personalize your box, when I tried going back it wouldn't let me, oh well no big deal (I had no idea of what to put on it anyways) I suggest not rushing through and take your time filling everything out. Good luck everyone and take care!
