    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen.     "investment stragety" what yuppie thought that one up, if you are buying this to recoupe revenues you have missed the bus and proubly didn't belong on it in the first place. I'm buying this because it's the greatest music in the world, period. Unfortunately, we live in a capitalistic world, where the rich get richer by doing just what they do, buy low and sell high, the way to stop that, don't buy the resales on auction sites, easy.

I got a Road Trip subscription when it was offered last year. I did get an e-mail warning me of a big release, the news came a few hours later. There was never any way to order then or reserve. So I went on with my life, must have missed all the massive confusion. I saw the apology on Facebook, then I went to Dead.net and reserved a copy. I also reserved one for my wife under her e-mail. Last night, we both got e-mails telling us that we had indeed reserved copies. I have spent most of the day reading all the comments on this thread. Really a lot of bad vibes, no doubt some folks are getting screwed. My wife received her code an hour ago, it went through. We will get a personalized copy, it's all tied off. I have yet to receive a code, I'm the one with the RT subscription? If I do get a code, I will get a copy for my bro who has missed this bus big time. We are glad to get a copy, but feel for those wanted one and missed out. Maybe they will surprise everyone later, who knows. I do think they really underestimated the demand for this. This is some of the best GD out there man. Hopefully, the suits have learned a lesson here and other big releases will follow. This has been a Charlie Foxtrot for sure. Long time until September, I'll bet many orders will be limited to one only, orders for 5-10 copies may get tossed out? Many cards will be rejected, many will not be able to pay when ordering, so don't give up. Coconut Phil, living Free.

I haven't gotten my code yet, but I still think that I will. I got an email last night saying that I need to wait 24-48 hours, well it hasn't even been 24 hours yet. Let's all be patient and let this work itself out. I do agree that multiple orders under one code is a bad idea, but it is out of our hands.

"It is more music than a person can actually absorb, especially if he or she ever listens to anything else by any other musician." I'm sure I can listen to at least 1 cd per day. "This is for the crazy rich." "...cashing in on the pocketbooks of all the fatcat deadheads out there." I am a blue collar worker and drive a ten year old truck. My wife has been bedridden for 4 years and we have outrageous medical bills and I have been trying to buy this since . To generalize me a 'crazy rich fatcat' is absurd and an insult.

I definitely am not a fat cat, for sure.. I drive a 13 yr old Civic, watch the pennies, and turn the heat off at night.That being said, I will save for this, and treasure it. Sure I could get it on Archive but I would like to have all the schwag that comes with it. I was able to get my request in 2 days after the site crashed, and just got my code today woohoo! Will be seeing Furthur in Boston in a couple weeks.. it will keep me warm in this brutal winter.

Hi Guys, I just called in to Golden Road and got the following information on the air: There are still E-Mails to go out either later today or tomorrow (Monday) for people who got copies 3000-7200. So many of us who have not heard anything yet have hope. He said the cutoff time was sometime on Saturday afternoon. So, since I reserved Friday evening, I should be ok. (That assumes the reservation went through properly) For the first 3000 most if not all codes should have already gone out. He said that Rollingstone announced the set on Wednesday and they had tech problems with the cart portion of the website. For this reason they held off on sending out the E-Mail annoucements from Dead.NET. He admitted E-Mails were receivied at varying times although he did not elaborate as to why this occurred. I asked also Mark if they would consider releasing the full music (10 Discs) from the Fillmore West (Music Only) as they are doing with Europe '72. He said he would liik into it and it was a good idea. I think that would be a nice way to make up for the difficulties with Eurpope '72. GreatNorthSpecial

I just checked my e-mails and this is what I received, which is why I find it strange I have yet to get a code (I know - wait 48 hours to see what happens): Jan 19 at 11:25am (EST) I receive an e-mail telling me because I am a Road Trips subscriber they are letting me know something BIG is coming on Dead.net at 12pm PST. I log on at 12pm PST and can't place an order!! Later I sign up to be alerted to when the set will actually go on sale (after also talking to Dead.net customer service on the phone that the system was down). Jan 20 at around 8pm - 9pm - I log onto Dead.net (after other repeated times logging on since the beginning of the sale of the box set), and I notice the message changed from send an e-mail for notification, to sign up to RESERVE your PERSONALIZED box set of Europe 72. I immediately put my information in the required boxes and wait for the confirmation e-mail I was promised. Jan 21 at 3:25am (EST) I receive an e-mail (delivered while I am asleep) which reads: Thank you for reserving your personalized edition(s) of Europe 72: The Complete Recordings. This email confirms that we have reserved 1 copy(copies) for you. We will reach out to you as soon as possible with the next steps to place your order. Jan 22 at 7:15pm (EST) I receive an e-mail thanking me for reserving the Europe 72 box and giving me a heads-up that I will receive a link and unique code to access my cart to be able to place my order. So I wait. As I mentioned before it more my impatient nature that I worry, since I have yet to get a code, while others have and have successfully placed their order. When marye stated that e-mails for PERSONALIZED boxes were going out first (not that I really truly care if mine is personalized or not) that worried me even more. Then when I called Dead.net (who I'm not sure always know what they are talking about when you call them on the phone), told me that only 1/2 of the e-mails have gone out, which would mean more than 3,000, and the rest are going out on Monday.... I have to assume I did not get a personalized copy. Again I wait, and hope that my code comes through.

My, my, my... this is one screwed up mess!, In the grand scheme of troubles in the world, this is a very small and insignificant thing. However, after reading through many of the comments posted here in the last 36 hours, I too am incredulous that Rhino & Grateful Dead Merchandising did not make better arrangements before this whole endeavour was unleashed upon the world. My email from dead.net came in at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21st. I got the message later that evening, and immediately went and reserved a copy. As of now (2:00 p.m. Sunday 1/23), I've received no follow up email. Some have posted that there are many replies that will not go out until Monday, so it's possible that I'll still get a code number and an opportunity to buy the original box. But I agree with many of the folks who have posted here - this was not handled well. So many rational people have posted scenarios that would have allowed all of us to be able to have an EQUAL opportunity to buy the limited-edition set, in a FAIR and reasonable way. The "first-come, first-served" mentality that seems to have prevailed at Rhino is a pretty stupid way to go, especially since their release of this information was not coordinated to hit at the same time. For example: I got the new issue of Rolling Stone on Friday, with tattoo cover boy Lil' Wayne on the cover. Didn't open it until yesterday (no rush to read about Weezy...), and what do I find? An almost full page piece on the Europe '72 box! So there were obviously many in the industry aware that this was imminent, besides just folks in the know at Rhino and GDP. In this case, the news was already out, giving those who did have the info an early heads-up and thus the benefit of getting a reservation in early. For shame... Also, limiting it to a mere 7,200 (a thousand X 72... oh, that IS clever!) is insane. I heard that heads rolled when they limited Fillmore '69 to only 10,000 copies. Didn't they learn from that debacle? Offering "all the music", but none of the cool packaging, for EXACTLY the same price is also cuckoo, and, as many have already stated, insulting. Add my name to that list And to Chiboy, who said: " 7,200 is plenty to go around. $450 is a lot of dough. Re-freakin'-lax! Take a deep breath! It will all be ok. I can hardly believe with the lack of faith by so many on this board that they are actually interested enough in the Good Ole GD to be here in the first place." Looks like you were way off-base with that assessment! It appears that a lack of faith in this particular orgainization is entirely justified. Hope someone can come in and straighten out this chaos and make things right. On Monday... once they are back in the office... yeah...

Besides getting the first email about the entire shibang 2 days late I reserved a copy and have no emails at all form dead.net : I don't want to complain but 7,200 is not a large # in respect to people, there are thousands at concerts and after the whole 30 days of Dead episode I really would have thought they would have planned this out better. I don't see how they thought that any of this would play out well, and who thought of the magic # 7,200? I mean did they just pull a number out of a hat? I am still hoping, but I feel like I should not have to hope to shell out $450. That's just sad :(

Here's the timeline of events & emails I got from Dead.Net so far: 1. Jan. 19th - the heads-up that something big was coming to Dead.Net that day. This expressly said that the "heads-up" was a thank you for subscribing to the Road Trip series. - Take note - advance word only went out to RT subscribers as a thank you to them. There was no randomness about it. 2. On the 19th when the cart crashed, I submitted my email address. 3. Jan 20th, I received the email with the "click to reserve" link. I reserved my copy within about 30 minutes of receiving that email. 4. Jan. 22nd, I received the "official release" announcement. 5. Later that same evening I received an email stating that I had reserved a copy and would receive the 48-hr code that allowed me to order. This was about 15 hours ago. I'm confident it will come. Whether their tech systems issues let me order or not remains to be seen. Best I can figure, here's how things went down: Release was set to go live with RT Subscribers receiving an email heads-up and a 48-hr window to order before the rest of the community was notified. Mind you, anybody coming to the site on the announcement date would also get a crack at it. However, tech issues caused the need for the reservation/confirmation/code system. I think those that are speculating that more sets will become available as the initial orders from the first 7,200 reserved or legitimately ordered shake down are exactly right. I would also imagine that more will become available around August 1st when cards start getting charged and possibly refused. In terms of "blame" (to the extent that people want somebody to be angry at), the only incompetence I've seen is the failure to have tech ducks in a row before going live with the release. Beyond that, I think that they've acted swiftly and fairly in trying to restore order and most importantly, address the concern of the availability of the music by releasing it separately.

I got a confirmation email for the reservation of a *personalized* copy two days ago, and yesterday got ANOTHER confirmation email informing me that sometime in the next 24 - 48 hours I would get ANOTHER email with this damn secret code - and I hope this secret code is for a *personalized* copy. I'd hate to think TPTB would allow people to buy multiple *personalized* copies (knowing that a large fraction is going to resellers) and cut out people who had already been confirmed. Those multiple copy people should be limited to ONE personalized copy even if this bad bad horrible bad purchasing scheme allows them to buy more than one. I still can't get over dead.net allowing the purchase of multiple copies (even encouraging, the way they all-capped "OR COPIES") of a limited edition set, after what went on with the FW'69 box. After the initial massive confusion of the first day dead.net should have just shut the whole fiasco down, taken a step back, thought things through and started over. Can't see this ending well, no matter how many overpriced bare-bones sets they make available. They should've at least knocked a hundred bucks of that thing, they'd still make money off it and all the fancy boxes will still sell out.

see - my timeline post above my code arrived (about 12-15 hours after confirmation email) and I've ordered the set and received immediate email confirmation. nb - this was for one of the 3,000 "personalized" copies. have patience folks - they're getting through things slowly but surely.

I am wondering why there would be a limited edition? It seems as though these sets haven't been made yet so why limit it? If 50,000 people want a box set, and are willing to pay for one, why not make that many box sets? Are you running out of cardboard or something? If 50,000 people sent you their credit card numbers, putting a hold on the funds so they are guaranteed, why not make that many?? I am no genius that's for sure, but what the cheese is going on here?

If you get a personalized code you can seemingly keep adding another box to your order. I kept doing this to see how many any one person could order. I got up to 54 before removing 53 from the order. I wonder if the programme would have gone beyond 7200 had i got that far? 1 order per person should have been the rule. I got the code an hour ago after applying on friday afternoon. They're slow, so hopefully evryone will get their order oppurtunity. Dont do it on a suspect line or with an iffy credit card, though. You only get one chance with the code you get apparently.

I have a subscription for RT but I received no "Early warning" mail about something big impending. The first I heard by mail was when I received the "Announcing the biggest release in Grateful Dead history" mail on the 21st. By that time, I and most of the rest of the world were well aware of the release and were busy trying to get through the system.

I too reserved a copy on Friday afternoon, received a reservation confirmation e-mail at 7:15 pm and then checked out the site again Sat. morning and there was a message stating that due to server problems some of the requests were not received so I sent another one just to be sure. Again at 7:31 pm on Sat. I received an e-mail stating I would be given the link and code within 48 hours. I hope I don't get shut out on this one. This is my holy grail as fas as the Grateful Dead go. What with Pigpen's last stand, this collection will stand the test of time. Brilliant idea. I have 22 CD's from this tour, but cannot wait to hear the 16-track remasters! Drool! Good Luck to all non-flippers. Cannot believe they did not limit this one to one per.

As Yeti UK mentions... it appeared the program to allow you to actually place your order for the Europe 72 Box set may let people order more than one copy (even if they didn't sign up to do so). They can't get anything right, can they.... lol. I hope the system, once it gets all the orders together for these boxes, monitors the orders vs. what was actually "reserved" by any specific person and adjusts the orders to what was reserved and not what was actually ordered. Make this darn thing fair, since it seems to have been all but since the massive screw ups that started this past Wednesday at 12pm PST.

I pray I get something in my email tomorrow. Like I said earlier, I "reserved" a copy Friday evening and haven't gotten anything in my email since. This is extremely disheartening, especially considering how big of a mess the Fillmore 69 release was. And people who took advantage of the system by ordering more than they reserved need to look in the mirror.

Wait a minute....GUSMOZART.... am I reading you correctly? That casual readers of Rolling Stone found out about the upcoming release even before most registered dead.net users were advised by email? Hey, I am as devoted as anyone; a latecomer to the Dead, having only seen my first show in '72 (became DP 23), having become hooked on all things Dead after hearing Live Dead & WD - also saw Kingfish during their short history, Legion of Mary, JGB, other than a couple RTs have every release, etc etc etc. So yeah, live & breathe Dead almost 40 yrs now. So I am respectfully holding my tongue - not saying I've paid my dues or anything, but ouch. OUCH. I do not have the luxury of logging on Dead.net every day to see if something new is afoot. When I rec'd my email on friday I of course 'reserved' - got conf that I was one of first 3k - no code yet though as of Sunday evening. If it somehow happens that the system doesn't give me at least one of the 7.2k, I will settle for the music only option. What choice do any of us have?But, trying to step back and gain perspective - even notwithstanding the server issues, bottlenecks, etc - it's the notice process that confounds me.....for us registered dead.net users ( I have re-registered a few times over the years, as I screwed up the password thing a couple of times) and Almanac readers... and as well RHINO users ( yeah, I am registered there for quite some time for their great Handmade series and their monthly newsletter) .....to find out AFTER readers of Rolling Stone, and probably other avenues, makes me clinch my jaw. I am sure that the gang at GD and all are making every effort to correct things - they are a sincere bunch of folks it seems, and no reason to add fuel to the fire at this point - - but, like the rest, a level playing field for at least getting the heads-up notice is pretty much what we all deserved.

Any man willing to give (and literally gave) his left arm deserves it and enjoy it. Anon777 you are a DB! I fear I missed out on the box due to the same reasons as everyone else, but I'm thankful at least the shows are being offered. To have these shows in the hands of just 7200 people would be downright criminal. Like the man said, it's about the music. BUT to charge the same amount for the box as for just the shows makes me think its it's about the GREED. Ya'll need to do the right thing - offer the box to everyone and/or reduce the price for those that just get the shows.

The more incompetent the folks at Rhino and Dead.net get -- and they've certainly outdone themselves this time around -- the greater the job security for the ever cheerful Marye! So there's always that. : ) Personally, I'm hoping a bunch of us after 3,000 get emails this week. Needless to say, they could have used the oh-so-clever 7,200 number as the magic number for the personalized copies, and just left it at that. As stupid as some of the people involved in this must surely feel, at bottom, I'm sure they are most upset over the fact that in all likelihood, the blew a couple/few million dollars with their woeful underestimation of demand and utterly needless limitation on this run. Obviously, they are trying to undo that damage already, with the music only offering, but they will never make as much off of this release as they would have had they handled the original offering with just a bit more thought and common sense.

I got the Friday email of "Thank you for reserving your personalized edition(s) of Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings.This email confirms that we have reserved 2 copy(copies) for you." I got the Saturday email of "Thank you for reserving Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings. As a heads-up...You will receive an email within 48 hours that will contain a link and a unique code that will give you access to the Europe ‘72: The Complete Recordings cart to place your order. " And now I'm waiting and reading about all you good people getting apoplectic awaiting emails, confirmations, and/or the actual delivery of the box set. I'm just hanging, assuming that Rhino/Mary/TPTB will do what they have promised in their emails and allow me to spend my hard earned cash on this personalized box. Sorry, all, I'm going to chill and hope that my Jets do better than my Bears. Remember, it's not the end of the world, it's just a box set that would be cool to have.

I agree, why limit the production to such an arbitrary selected maximum quantity when by now Dead.net / Rhino should know that the demand would be very high. I would think by now that they would have a better understanding of the Grateful Dead consumer base. I can understand limiting the personalized versions of the box set, but I think a non-personalized edition should become permanently available on Dead.net so that anyone desiring a copy of the music could purchase it when they can afford to do so. my guess is that they do the limited edition thing to minimize the carrying costs of inventory and create a frenzy to bring in $$$ to fund production. it may suck for the consumer, but it makes perfectly good business sense.

I am still stunned that the whole 1972 Europe tour was recorded without any notes missing, lol. I'll just be glad to have a shot at getting the 60+ discs. Having the confirmation for a copy of the box set *would* be nice but I can not let this stay on my list of things that will bother me today. September 2011 is far off. I don't want to stay grumpy too much longer.

Got itI'm very thankful I am truly hopeful that they either release all of the shows individually or let them stay on the LMA. 5 or 10 years ago there would be absolutely no way I could have afforded this and I am blessed to have the chance to get it now. I don't begrudge those who listen to it for free one iota.

How strange. After many years of pleading that the vault be made available, here is the first of hopefully many serious and extensive releases. Did we also think that the vault should be free to us? I'm thrilled that Rhino has taken this step, and I'm thrilled to have my hard earned money go to them and the 'boys'. A couple million bucks ain't really that much considering that this is a gross amount, not an estimated prophet. And of course if you don't want this box set there are still more hours of GD sbd recordings (let alone the audiences) than any of us will listen to in our lifetimes available for free. Thanks Rhino! Thank you, Grateful Dead, for a real good time!

Oh! I'm a happy boy. I just reserved my copy. Now how 'bout that 89 box set? Wasn't 89-90 recorded in its entirety for Without a Net? In that liberal Rolling Stone article there seemed to be hints of a possible Spring of '90 box. It's a shame '89 has been chopped up and released the way it has been, here and there, butchered and debauched. Now if I may join in on the griping. Didn't Rhino learn their lesson after the Fillmore Box debacle? How much in sells did they miss out on by limiting that release? I don't understand it. It does not make perfect business sense to me.

Still waiting for my Holy Golden Secret Code. 23 hours left in the window... Can't wait to see what problems September brings. Still not even a confirmation. I tried twice, once Friday and once Sat morning. Still a shred of hope, but thinking no go without the confirmation. I e-mailed customer service, but they are obviously swamped. The funny thing is that early notification went to Road Trip subscribers. I tried to subscribe but the store was trying to charge me $66 in shipping on top of the $95 price tag. Multiple e-mails to customer service and "we'll inform our management" was the best I got. So ---- no early notifcation for me. d

Well it looks like I am one of the lucky ones. For all of the people that still dont know where they stand as far as their order gos I will try and break it down. First- You place your order with dead.net Second- Dead.net sends you a email letting you know that they got your order. Third- Dead.net sends you a second email letting you know that you will receive a unique code that will allow you to purchase the box set (at this point you are 100% for sure getting your box set) Fourth- dead.net sends you yet another email (within 48hours of the second email they sent you) with the code that allows you to buy AS MANY BOX SETS AS YOU WANT. Grats to all of the lucky ones able to get this epic box of music.
