    Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

    Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

    After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

    " class="border" style="border: 0pt none;" allowtransparency="true"> --> " class="border" style="border: 0pt none;" allowtransparency="true"> -->

    Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
    Check back soon for more product images.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

    So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Profit
    At about 7 ducats a disc for 66(!) discs of the entire tour with extensive and elaborate notes and packaging, I see nothing to complain about. Be glad you're not a Frank Zappa Fan, they recently offered a 3 disc live show from London 10/31/78 for $48! More than twice the price per disc.

    Thanks, LC...
    ... but I've been insulted much worse by many others through the years. Comes with the territory. What I might think is bringing a personal perspective to some things doubtless looks like bragging if seen in a certain light... whereas my view has always been: "I can't believe I was so lucky to have been at this or that great show and now I get to write about it!" Since I wasn't on the Europe '72 tour, I'm not gonna be a "character" in that essay...

    Looking forward to the music
    I will purchase one but my primary interest is in the music, not the packaging. 100% of the time I rip the discs to my iTunes library and the packaging goes on a shelf after reading through it once, never to be opened again.

Just another guy in the same boat as Let_It_Grow and dajokr. No acknowledgment of a reservation after trying Friday evening and again Saturday. Of course more confirmations may be coming tomorrow - we can only hope. The guy selling on Ebay wants immediate payment even though he won't see or pay for the box set until September? Talk about bad karma! Many of us who legitimately tried as early as Friday may be shut out - and I'm willing to wager that most of us only TRIED for one copy. There is of course one other thing that could be done - the US mint did it with the 5oz America the Beautiful bullion coins just this past month once it became clear that people were trying to profit as resellers while collectors got shut out; change the rules midstream and cancel the multiple orders! Those coins should not wind up on TV coin sales shows, and these sets should not be on Ebay. Change multiple orders to one and reoffer the remaining sets. It can't be done? Ask the US mint!

So how about making the 69 box set available to all that want one. I was fortunate but many were not and are forced to buy it on ebay. Im sure a music only release will be just fine to most. Then all those people selling it on ebay will be screwed.

Seems to me over the last few years there has been a vault release in the Spring and a Box Set in the fall, that have been from the same year. 2009 - Spring - To Terrapin 05/28/77 , Fall - Winterland 06/07-08-09/77 Box 2010 - Spring - JFK Philly 07/07/89 , Fall - Hampton 10/08-09/89 Cigar Box 2011 - Spring - ????? , Fall - Europe 72 Complete Recordings So, this brings up the question. What's the most requested show of 1972 ? What about Veneta 08/27/72 aka Sunshine Daydream. Bring it out as a CD/DVD release. I know, I know, good quality audio (not HDCD) has been out there for years. But for years there's been talk of this coming out as a DVD . I'd like an upgrade ! Just food for thought.

Well I decided to peruse these pages one last time for the night before going to bed, and wouldn't you know it my e-mail code came as I was reading the newest posts here. I purchased my one personalized box set I was hoping for!! I didn't try it, and I wouldn't even think of doing so, but the e-mail was worded strangely in it does seem you can order "as many copies as you wish". Even though I only reserved (and ordered) one copy, the e-mail stated "you will then have access to order and personalize as many copies of Europe 72 as you wish". WTF... why would they allow that. I don't understand the rationale behind letting people reserve a copy or copies, and then later letting them freely order as many copies as they wish. How can you send out e-mails to people who reserved this item in good faith, allowing each person the ability to exceed the number they reserved?? I really hope that Dead.net either does one of two things here: 1) Adjust everyone's order so that the number order matches the number indicated they reserved. (I know that may be hard to do, since it could be possible that the e-mail address attached to the Dead.net account could be different than the e-mail address used to reserve the box set. 2) Adjust everyone's order so that each unique code used to get to the order page can only receive one box set. This may tick some people off, but if there really are not enough boxes to fulfill the need of people that want the boxes, limit all orders to one box (no matter how many they reserved or ordered). I still can't fathom why, if this box is so limited and SOLD OUT on reservations alone, you can allow someone to order more boxes than they effectively reserved. Seems pretty screwed up to me. Maybe someone in the know can answer why? Regardless, I got the one box I wanted and I can know eagerly wait for September to roll on in. :-)

jon m. Just an idea: produce a few more, maybe 100, and give them to Rex foundation. Let them raffle them off or auction them off. That way, people who really want these that missed out have a chance to purchase them and help a worthy cause, while at the same time, can avoid having to pay some greedy person on bay who cares very little about the Dead or the philosophies by which we all try to live by. Thoughts? I would love to spearhead this effort somehow. Jon m. Chicago

There is no mention on the page about them not taking the money straight out right now....So that makes me nervous about why $450 is a pending debit to my bank account right now....!!!! I thought they weren't gonna take the money until September? I'm just freaking out a LITTLE bit right now, but will post this to see if anyone else who ordered the set has a pending debit on their account already...before I go complaining to the powers that be. Seems to me that this should not have come down to being lucky or unlucky to make this purchase. We who have supported this band for much of our lives should not have to be lucky or unlucky when it comes down to getting something like this. I do feel lucky in that I discovered something beyond description when my friend took me do a dead show my freshman year in college, Jacksonville Fl. Did everything right but did not even receive an e-mail. I don't know what is going on but this darkness has to go. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Okay, I remember reading a few days ago that this would have liner notes/essays for each show from those who were there and guys who have written for Dead releases before (Steve Silberman is one in particular I remember) or something along those lines - I can't seem to find it now but I was wondering if this "just the music" set will come with these or am I boned? Music aside, these have always been my favorite parts of releases

Why are you charging the same price of $450 to people who receive the cd's without the additional items included in the box set? It seems that you will be passing on costs incurred for the production of box set extras to people who will only be getting cds. That doesn't seem fair. Please explain. Thank you.

The first commenter was correct, & I'm one of the ones upset about this. I'm sorry, but I received my email from you, David, 3 days after some had made comments. And I responded right away stating that I wanted ONE, one set. Let's rethink this. I had a drop down window w/the option of buying up to ten copies. I reserved one. Since all 7200 copies 'sold out' I think it's safe to assume some people reserved more than one. How about reserving ONE copy of the original box set for everyone that wants one from your email list & then if more are available a second could be added in the order the reservations were received. And must I add how condescending your announcement was that you'll be making a lesser version of the box set but at the same $$? I think it's total bullshit, excuse my language, that resellers, brokers, will be allowed to buy extras before the actual ticket holder, the concert goer, the fan gets a shot @ one. You need to rethink this David Lemieux. Yes, I believe your quote is, "although perhaps not as cool as the box set". Are you drymounting kidding? "Although"? "Perhaps"? "Not as cool"? Where do you get off young man? So if it's the music that matters most, which it is, then I'm sure to the folks that reserved more than one copy of the First Edition, they won't mind getting the Second Edition after one copy of the First, since it's "the music" that matters most. I think if you take the time to inquire to the folks you're planning on screwing if it's "the music" that matters most you might, "perhaps" get a different answer. You may, "perhaps" disagree, Mr Corporation. But then again, you're not the one getting screwed because some brokers/resellers/callemwhateveryouwant, bought upwards of ten copies. Who's bright idea was that to do a drop down window for multiple copies? And now you guys can fix it, really you can.

If this Euro 72 Box is really sold-out, how come I can still reserve a copy? At 12:17AM (Early Monday Morning Jan 24), the e-mail sign up is still available for persons interested in reserving a copy of Euro 72. Sign-up or call 1-800-CAL-DEAD. With all the problems the GD/Rhino has had with this process, I think they will still have copies left after they "unwind" all the problems with orders, e-mails, etc. Best Wishes-Jimmy

It would be cool if the bonus CDs would cover the New Riders material from the UK during this time. Ive got a NRPS ticket from may 9 from 1972 from the Old Refectory in the UK, and have heard the Lyceum may 26th show. Learning more about NRPS roll in this tour would be interesting.

I hope you're right JBH69Flyer. Of course, after my comments I'm getting shut out anyway.

What you can still reserve is a copy of the MUSIC ONLY version ie not the deluxe limited edition version On January 23rd, 2011 JBH69Flyer said: "Sold Out? Really If this Euro 72 Box is really sold-out, how come I can still reserve a copy?"
