Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Cosmicbadger:"There is only
Cosmicbadger: "There is only one solution: every single thing that's ever released must be kept in stock in perpetuity." Not a bad idea if the market is there. If people want to buy it, sell it, if economically feasible. The Europe 72 Complete pre-order was a good idea and as it does say on the Dead.net homepage it did much better than anticipated. Despite Dead.net saying it would be limited to the 7200 copies, and my being lucky enough to have gotten one, I think it is ok to produce more than that. People obviously are willing to buy it.

    They're gauging us again!
New email from dead.net sez "The Skeleton Crew Shop" will have goodies like "the latest and greatest t-shirts, jewelry and more." BUT, "these unique designs will change monthly"!!!! So if we miss it, it's gone?? How much more unfair can they get? Bet those "unique designs" turn up on eBay (a limited subsidiary of dead.net, probably), at outrageous prices. C'mon dead.net, give us a break -- if a shirt is popular, keep making them as long as we want them -- or are you just trying to alienate us and drive us into the arms of the shirt scalpers? ... I was at my junkie buddy's house and he wiped up some blood with a rag, or so I thought until I saw the skull & roses on it. When I unwadded the tattered thing, I saw it was a shirt I'd never seen before -- he said he got it online. I Never Got That Email, people!! I guess some of us are just more elite than others. That doesn't make it right, though.

Please at least know that you are not alone in your predicament. I believe you have been following this thread, as have I (fruitlessly, so far) and like you, my posts have gone from excited to anxious, and finally now to resignation. With no news and no confirmation email of any kind it seems that several of us who tried as early as Friday evening and Saturday morning still somehow missed the bus. I'm not sure why it went like this, and it is possible that someone may still be looking at this somewhere, but i think it is finally time to stop holding our breath and checking our spam buckets, and simply move on. It would be helpful if the powers that be would say - "sorry folks - the emails are all out - if you were getting a box set you'd know by now" We can still get the music. If the music only option will wind up being limited, I do hope that some kind soul will let us poor schmucks still waiting and hoping for a box set acknowlegement / confirmation email know so that we, at least, will still have a shot at that option. And shame on anyone selling their multiple copies on ebay or anywhere else. What goes around comes around. Please don't allow mutilple copy orders of any future limited releases!

Like you, I would simply like some closure in the situation like you. At least let an admin or someone tell all of us the emails are all out because until I hear that I simply won't give up hope, no matter how small it is. It would also be easier for me to make a final decision on the music only package if I knew with 100% certainty I wasn't getting the real deal.

I reserved mine on Friday afternoon, after the check-out problems had been identified, and have heard absolutely nothing. Given what an incredible debacle and miscalculation this has been, I think they should do the whole thing over. I understand that they want to honor the original terms of the offer, but if you ask me, the best thing to do -- from a business perspective as well as from the perspective of all the people who apparently have been screwed on this -- is to permit anyone who has placed an order to cancel it if they want to. Only interested in owning something because of its limited production -- cancel your order now. Only interested in purchasing multiple copies in hopes of profiting down the road due to the limited production -- cancel your order now. Based on the original announcement, every single person who signed up for this understood that there was a chance that it would never happen and that they would never receive anything (if 3,000 units weren't sold). So, it doesn't seem terribly unfair to make it happen for everyone, but on slightly different terms -- especially if people can now "opt out".

....and they seem to be pretty definitive that, if we have no confirmation e-mail yet, we are SOL. Time to move on. What a great great monstrous shame. I'd like to say that I will never deal with this site again, but the only one that punishes is me. On the bright side, the representative was very helpful with addressing a $66 shipping charge which kept appearing as I tried to do the Road Trips subscription.

Thanks for the update. I have emailed feedback several times and got no response so at least you were able to get something somewhat definitive. I can't believe I'm letting something like this effect me in the way it is, but what can you say? I love the Grateful Dead and I feel like this is the showpiece to anyone's collection. To make matters worse, I (and others) did everything right in the proper timeframe and we have nothing to show for our hopes and excitement. Like I said earlier, I feel as if I've been repeatedly punched in the gut. When I first placed my reservation Friday night I was genuinely ecstatic and now I'm genuinely depressed I'll be missing out on something this special. Maybe the third time will be the charm for me on limited edition box sets, if there ever is a third time.

Has anybody successfully placed an order with a code for the personalized version that went to somebody elses account? I have a code and am debating whether or not to either a) buy the box, b) give the code to a friend of mine or c) not buy the box. This is something that I really want, but I have other more pressing financial commitments that may dictate my final decision to purchase. The last thing I want to do is let the code slip into someones hands who will only throw it up on Ebay for a profit with no intention to enjoy the music. Granted, the fact that it will be available boxless to everybody makes it a little easier to part with my code. So?

So I finally ordered my two personalized boxes. Shipping is $18.12. Anyone encountered that? Incidentally, I am not mad, understand I'm "lucky" to get to spend $450/box and am not complaining. I'm just surprised that the free shipping ends up costing $18. I figure this will probably get straightened out when GD/Rhino is done straightening out all the other miscues, but am curious if others have encountered this.

If I opt to not purchase this with my code, and/or my buddy has not already purchased one, and/or the codes are in fact transferable, then I may give it to someone from the forum. I'm not interested in selling my code. Thats just plain greedy. The only way I'll pass it on is if I know that it is in fact transferable.

.. what the best thing Rhino can do is. I would suggest scrapping the whole thing, get the system working properly, send a mail to everyone who got or tried to get the box telling them about this and then start all over agian. First add up all those who tried to but failed to get a copy, add these to the 7200 and add another 10% to 15% on top of that. Then start again with the number of copies set at whatever number the came up with. I bet they would all be sold by April and the eBay copies would not sell at such ridiculous prices. The only people who would be pissed off by this would be those who had ordered it for what is was worth rather than what it contained. If you ordered it for the music, you would still have a limited edition with the exclusivity that comes with that and you would have the knowledge that most, if not all the people who have wanted this for years and will get great pleasure out of it have got a copy. Also Rhino would make more out of it. Thanks to them for daring to bring this out. It is such a shame that they seem to have had so little idea of how to do it right.

I'll keep you in mind. I feel like Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the golden ticket but may have to let it go. Other Boxes may very well become available as others in my shoes may opt out ot so all hope isn't lost for those who absolutely have to have the box with all of the extra non-music goodies.

I am in the same boat you two are. I wonder how many others are. I started attempting to order Friday night, sent my reservation in Saturday morning and another on Sunday morning per all the instructions. I have not received ANY emails, including one to announce the sale of the box set. I am a Road Trips subscriber, have ordered multiple releases over the years, and have signed up for the newsletter, all with the same email address. If I don't get one because I am number 7201, so be it, I accept that. I find it hard to believe that is the case since I have been trying to order from the very beginning.

Hopefully the non-boxset issues destroys any hope for ripping people off like these folks are trying to. Nobody has been able to successfully use a code given to another person to use? Yes or no?

It's a crowded boat of folks with the same problem - tried on Friday, again saturday, no email, no luck. Imagine how many more folks there in that same swamped and sinking boat are who do not choose to participate in the forum. Time to move on; at least I can stop checking my email every 5 minutes. If something can/will be done, so be it. We all know the intentions were good, despite the SNAFU. I'll mull over the music only option for a bit as it is "not limited", then probably pull that trigger once things calm down. No, this is not how I'd 'a done it - but them's the breaks!

I figured someone might bring that up. I have been a member of this site for much longer than I've had this name registered. I previously used my college email account on this site and it recently quit working since I graduated a certain amount of time ago. I realize there is no way to prove this and you can believe whatever you chose but I've ordered tons and tons of music from here - Fillmore 73 and 77 complete recordings, So Many Roads, JGB box set, tons of Dicks Picks, etc.

I still haven't decided whether to break down to get this yet, but I'm leaning towards holding off for personal financial reasons. I don't want to promise anything then have to renig. I definitely don't want to give a code to someone who is only interested to resell it it I do pass on my code. In all good conscience, I refuse to purchase it to just turn around and sell it. People who do that are scumbags.

I sent an e-mail yesterday after I realized I messed up my delivery address. I got an e-mail back today saying all corrected and was given a case # to refer to if there was a problem. I was nice and tried to be a bit funny (hate to quit my job and chase the UPS man around the entire month of Sept.). and somebody responded! It would pay to remember to be nice to the customer reps as that is who they give good service to. They get way too much hate for their pay.. Also, checked my credit card account again today and there was no hold (authorization holding $450 w/o charging your card, so that it would not show on your bill and not lower your credit limit). Debit cards being treated differently? That is news. If I used a debit card I'd sure check with my bank . Bounce fees are the banks booty call! I DO NOT understand there being no announcement today to limit this deluxe box to 1 per customer given the demand. It is sick to see people selling it on E-Bay already. Makes me wonder.....

Place your order and when September comes you can decide keep it or pass it along. You already know you can resell it and recover the CC payment. I'm not advocating profiteering, but you're not gonna come out behind. Of course, having it in your possession only to give it up would be nigh impossible. I'm kind of surprised they're offering this thing up without some sort of deposit. It's practically risk free to anyone with a valid credit card to place the pre-order.

That I have nothing to do with what appears to be a total FUBAR situation. I recognized from the beginning that my finances wouldn't let me jump on this mega monster release so I don't worry about it. I also know that many of these Europe shows are out there in the wilds, copied from the original 16 track master tapes in the vault onto DAT back in the late 80s, and circulated by the likes of C. Miler, Sirmick, Eaton, and others. I've enjoyed many of these shows for years. I frankly don't care one bit if I don't get these shows in "spectacular HDCD." I don't need some fancy box with a bunch of phony trinkets or slick pictures. And I don't need a bunch of "experts" telling me what I already know about the band. At 62 years old I've learned that all those "things" are not going to make me happy. What makes me happy is to listen to copies of the shows that I have, and I have enough to last me a long time. This manic rush to grab some "thing" that a marketing guy has convinced you is "special" isn't going to make your life special. I'm sure that Jerry, Ron, Keith, Brent, and even Vince are looking down on this fiasco and saying, "WTF, if we knew it would be this freaking stupid, we would have burned the whole archive years ago." On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

I sure hope that Dead.net and Rhino have learned from this debacle. No more limited editions. It just leads to greed for people who don't care for the music and disappointment for those that do. It is obvious that people will buy these kind of releases. Why put so many fans who have supported the band for years through such hell. I must admit I was tense as soon as I heard it was limited until I was able to purchase one. It reminds me of the day trying to score Deer Creek or Albany tickets and getting shut out but ticket agencies always had plenty and sold them for twice as much. Here is my solution for future releases. 1. Don't limit it. Let everyone participate. If you want to make the first 3000 personalized, that is fine. This will stop the ebay scumbags from ripping off true fans. 2. Only one copy per order. If you want two, then you must fill out another order. 3. Send out emails to people signed up to receive them pre-announcing the release with a code only they can use to reserve a copy. This way the real fans who are most likely to purchase it get a crack at it first. Lets be honest, most people who were shut out are registered on this site as they purchase stuff regularly. After so many days, make the general announcement to the rest of the world. Thank you Rhino and Dead.net for putting this release out on the table. You know we love this shit so please keep doing things like this. Just have a better system in place next time.

To anyone who rushed into this or sold their car to get this good luck!! I can't wait until september to read all the posts on here about how everyone got screwed one way or another!! We all know it's gonna happen, either the discs are going to be wrong or the sound is going to be muddy or some people are going to get 5 of the same cd! It's been the way for how long now? Oh well live and learn i guess, the past history on products isn't exactly fantastic. That's not coming from me every purchase i have made luckily has been perfect but i've read the nightmares here and there are tons!! I can afford 3 of these box sets right now no question if i want but that doesn't matter! I'm not going to commit to 450.00$ for a box set that number one may have all kinds of mistakes and not be what you intended! Me myself i think a best of that tour box would have been better at a more reasonable price also. Why do we need every note played the whole year i mean really 60 cd's thats a little much but who am i to say! This one i'm going to sit back and listen to all the people who spent a fortune and are unhappy! I'll have front row seats.

if you forward the email to someone and haven't used the code and that means even once (even if you only looked at the info etc.) it will work...do not sell them just pass them on to someone who really wants it...i know someone who passed on a duplicate email for a personalized box set and they said that it worked for them

Will the Europe 72 set have something like the "Special pyramid-inspired pop-up packaging" from the Rocking The Cradle: Egypt 1978? Could a pop-up Eiffel Tower, or maybe a pop-up London Bridge, be in there??? We all love and admire that packaging so MUCH. Rhino really knows it's customer base! They must be so proud of what they've done!! Keep up the good work Rhinos!

All I really want to know about the secondary market is this: Where do I get the miraculous superpowers of mindreading that so many DeadHeads seem to have??? I mean everybody seems to just *know* that any Dead material sold on eBay is being sold by an evil, profiteering, scumbag who somehow snapped up 57 copies of whatever to resell with hideous, cackling glee. Like, how exactly, do you know that? Is this merely the same mindreading power that might lead someone else to conclude that anybody who protests so much is just feeling outrageous self-entitlement, crushing envy and greed? "And here's how Jerry would have felt about it:..." Yeah, sure. You can mindread the corpses, too. St. Jerry's on your side, f'sure. And now we're measuring dicks??? By which I allude to this "I've been a Deadhead for x years, so I deserve this more than the guy who registered yesterday" garbage. F(^&(^*ING GROTESQUE!

Thank you, brother (or sister?), for putting it that way. I am one very disappointed head who missed out on this "deal" because of the . I've been on the bus only since 1980 but share your obvious passion. You helped me quickly get over this fiasco in my heart (the awful consumer part of my brain is still struggling!) by remembering what it's about. I just pulled out some cassette copies of a friend's DATs from way back that ARENT out on any "great boxed set" and it brought back my vibe! Funny thing is...today trading ain't like it used to be...this entire release will be shared and duplicated in cyberspace within hours of release to many who won't or can't buy it. I don't agree with that, but Rhino coulda woulda made even more bucks if they had done this right.

Charging $450 and limiting the release? Jerry is turning over in his grave, and you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. I got on the bus in '69, but I think I'll take a cab from now on....

So now it looks like they will continue to sell the CDs and nothing else for the same price as the boxed set. Am I missing something here or does this smell like a conspiracy. I don't mean to be so negative but I have faithfully purchased every DP and official release including the very funny Terrapin Station release for $45 - anyone remember what that was for. Anyways is this how they say thanks to us loyal customers? Feels like a slap in the face.

Wasn't Jerry cremated? On January 24th, 2011 zygster said: Charging $450 and limiting the release? Jerry is turning over in his grave, and you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. I got on the bus in '69, but I think I'll take a cab from now on....

....happy you are satisfied. I got a box of tapes and a box of CDs too. Don't have an Ipod or fancy filing cabinet. It's enough to last me. But, I haven't even listened to most of these shows, except for the official releases: Hundred Year Hall Rockin' The Rhein Steppin' out with the GD & Europe 72 So I do want it, all of it, Screw the doo-dad crap, It's about the music. As for Jerry et al spinning, don't think so. Why you have all your stuff is you traded or somebody gave it to you (I'm guessing). If you can afford it, give a little back.

Can anyone help? I completed the request box with email address on Friday and Saturday with no reply. I have tried emailing Customer service with no reply. I am a newer member of the trip. But when I got on the bus I was hooked and have spent countless dollars enjoying the music. It is frustrating in today's society that fans get screwed in all directions. Is there still a chance I might be getting a reply for the initial 7,200. I know it's about the music. Just the Set sounded like a great idea. And to those who are buying them up to turn around and make a profit may you kindly step off the bus and stand in front of a train. Jim

There is currently six live auctions going on for the box set. All for around $1500 and being sold by sisters with high transaction numbers including redtagmarket who is selling 10 box sets.

What they're doing is despicable. Unfortunately dead.net didn't have the foresight to know this would happen if they didn't allow only 1 order per customer.

Does anybody wanna pay $1500 for a Europe 72 box set which does not yet even exit. You won't be getting yours until after the summer according the the e-mail that I got from them last week. http://cgi.ebay.com/Grateful-Dead-Complete-Europe-72-Box-Set-60-CDs-/16…; Rhino didn't learn anything from the Fillmore West 69' fiasco. I'll stick with the bootlegs until these corporate morons get their heads out of their butts. No chance in hell, that the artists will get a share of a thief's obscene tax free profits...
