Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Box set prices
To be fair, as a big classical music listener (and purchaser), this set is well above the cost of similar classical sets. However, those sets have generally amortized their production costs during the release of individual discs, so the lower price is logical. On the other hand, there's a Dutch label, Brilliant Classics, that has done a number of big boxes with original recordings for around a buck a disc. I have no problem with this price, though. As others have said, it's not that expensive per disc, and a lot of people did a lot of hard work to get the music to us. That's nothing to sneeze at. I'm glad I can afford it, and contribute to making it viable, and I hope there will be more big sets in the future. Though I can't see what they'd do for an encore after this; perhaps Spring 77? Ever Winterland show ever? Every Fillmore show, West and East? As long as they keep releasing more music until I die, I'll be happy.

Has anything ever come from these posts. Or is this just are way of expressing frustration with the way things are handled. I wonder what the band and the archive guys think of this or is everyone just laughing and counting the money. I don't know? Just wondering

Hey, like many of us, I tried to reserve a copy of the box set and never heard anything back. I'd just about given up hope that I'd get a copy, but tried customer service to find out for sure. To my pleasant surprise, for some reason I was never contacted, but I have a copy reserved.

I had to check this out. Actually, the "10 box sets" that redtagmarket is selling on Ebay are only the remasters. "There is currently six live auctions going on for the box set. All for around $1500 and being sold by sisters with high transaction numbers including redtagmarket who is selling 10 box sets."

Some people learn a lesson the hard way. Fools never do. You screwed up with that '"limited edition" Fillmore West 69 box set and thieves sell them for ten times the list price on Fleabay. Here we go again with the Europe 72 box. They can't even wait to get their merchandise, before pulling this crap again. Give people another reason to get the bootlegs instead...

It is all about the shakedown, and all about the money. It's been all about the money ever since Jerry died. There is plenty of music going around, and no one needs to be ripped off in this way. These guys have been doing this long enough to know what the end result would be, so these posts are no surprise and I doubt will bring any concern. Flat out shame, but Greed brings out the "real" in people, so have a look. Like what you see?

Shipping was like $11 something. I was just glad I got my order through, hell I'm not going to freak out over $11 at this point in the game, I'll chalk it up as tax. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

1) Yes, there are many copies now available on e-bay for $1,500.2) When this set was first announced, it was stated that, This is only being announced so we can estimate the desire for a 60+ box set, If we do not receive 3,000 orders by 4/1 this box set will not happen. 3) The order system is inundated by massive amounts of requests to reserve a set (or in some cases multiple sets (in a limited edition run only one per head should be allowed)). After the debacle an announcement is made to be e-mailed when the system is available. This is again inundated and breaks down. At this point is becomes obvious that desire for the Europe '72 Box is beyond anything dreamed about in the planning stage. The "Grateful" thing to do is rein in the madness. Start from scratch and print 100,000 copies of the box so everyone can enjoy the Greatest BAND on the Greatest TOUR EVER Phil Bob Bill Mickey Get off your asses and get into this The heads are your family and we are being held up by bandits. This is getting so ugly it is disturbing. I fear that the end result of all of the vitriol (cruel and bitter criticism) is that Rhino will cancel any future projects like this one. On forums like this all across the internet, complainers tend to be the most vocal. Rhino, please carry on with these releases but do what you can to improve the pipeline. Dead Ahead, who exactly is making it ugly? It's the very same folk you're pleading with. Well-intentioned people have been saying stuff like "do what you can to improve the pipeline" here for years and years and years. Made a lot of difference hasn't, eh? Well, no, actually there has been no change at all. I don't hate them, I'm not ugly - so my mum thinks - but they are the enemy. jon m. Oh my god, you guys are insane. Either you got the box or you didn't. If you did, awesome. It is a killer product and a collectors item, no doubt, and good for you. If you didn't, well too fucking bad. Rhino, gdm, David, Blair, the ghost of Jerry, and every other person, alive or dead, who has been mentioned in these posts/rants, have NOTHING to do with this other than to provide us with something amazing that they did NOT have to do. We are lucky as he'll to have so many amazing products that they all spend their lives culling, merchandising, promoting, advertising, etc. Yes, it's for them to make money, but you all realize that you can make money and provide a valuable service for people. Jesus. The other thing is, how many times did you not get your mail orders or tickets to any show? You didn't complain to the mayor of rosemont to add 5,000 more seats so you could see a show you weren't able to get a ticket for? Why? Because that is stupid and senseless, similar to 95 percent of these whiny, bitchy, dumb ass posts from people who didn't get what they wanted. Rhino made a decision to make x number of sets and that's that. You don't like it? Too bad. They are not screwing the guys who have been on the bus for 40 years any more than they are screwing the guy who registered for this site five days ago and doesn't know scarlet begonias from scarlet petunias. They aren't trying to SCREW anyone! They are trying to provide a nice, exclusive product. It becomes more valuable because it is exclusive. That's the difference between a Dali painting and a Bob Ross painting. Unbelievable. All the anger and vitriol and finger pointing and name calling. Just relax, people, and be thankful for whatbwe have in Rhino and GDM. Shit, you could be a fan of just about any other band and never in your lifetimes see a tenth of what we have had the opportunity to buy and hear, collect and study. Stop acting like a bunch of five year olds. If you want the music, its available for $450 and you can order it right after you shut the hell up.

- I submitted for a personalized edition box set- Got an email confirmation with code - Came to this thread tonight and read through some of the madness - Decided to go to my confirmation email for the ONE set I reserved - Got to the email and here is how it read.... "Because you have reserved a copy (copies), you can now order your personalized edition(s) of Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings! Please follow the instructions below to access your exclusive order page. 1) Click on this URL http://store.dead.net/......... You will be taken to a page to enter your exclusive code. 2) Enter your exclusive CODE: ....... You will then have access to order and personalize as many copies of Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings as you wish. (REALLY, as many copies as I want?) You will have 2 weeks to place your order. IMPORTANT: Once you enter your code on this page, you will not be able to enter it again, you must complete your order once you have entered your code. Please note this code is exclusive to you and can only be used once. " - I decided to go for it.... clicked the link, entered my code and, indeed, I could order as many personalized copies as I wanted. I even tested it out and got up to 30 copies ($13.500) and could have kept going... - Just for fun, I took it back down to "10" and began the check out process (without entering anything in the personalization fields) - Prepared to finalize, I felt the impulse to "take a step back". Took a breath and reflected for a moment at the energy running through me and surrounding the process - A couple of minutes later and in a clearer space, Divinely guided, I returned to the browser, clicked "empty cart", and closed the order page "Our chief comforts often produce our greatest anxieties, and the increase in our possessions is but an inlet to new disquietudes." jon m. Kennyw, it isn't about fighting, being silent, not standing up for something, or whatever other moronic cliche you want to throw at this, it's about a company making a product decision. If they didn't care about you, they'd be doing a Depeche Mode box set for their fans or something. Yes, I am happy at the bones they throw us from up high. They are fun bones to get, and it is fun to wait and see what comes next. They are part of this, too, and like it or not, they are on the proverbial bus, too. Just like you, kw.

And please note, at no point have I resorted to nasty namecalling by posters here - not in the same way such are being directed at myself and anyone else speaking out. Again, weird: How so many DeadHeads are so quick to defend those who repeatedly and for years have been harming the band's legacy - and wishing for the best.

Well I guess I was one of the lucky ones as I did receive a code to purchase this and was able to successfully get one ordered. It is kind of a bittersweet thing as I know some who would really like this are not getting it due to ebay scalpers and as*holes who order more than one. I just dont understand the logic behind allowing people to purchase more than one of these. I only reserved one copy but when I went to purchase I was able to add more. Just doesnt make sense to me. Well hopefully in about 2 weeks when some of the codes dont get used they will release some more to those that didnt get lucky and get the email.

Why don't those who did get a code buy more than one box set and then sell them at the same price to those who didn't get the beautiful code?

Kennyw, you need to look up the phrase “silent majority”. I should have put the definition in parentheses for your benefit as I did the other word. Silent majority has a long history of usage prior to Nixon. My use of it was apropos and correct to my statement and has no political connotation or reference to Nixon whatsoever. By the way, my tag line is no reference to “fancy pants credentials”, of which I have none. That is ironman88’s own erroneous assumption. Your respective comments demonstrate how you guys jump to conclusions and try to skew the conversation to your benefit. Jay Psychodeadologist

jon m. I am. I am just frustrated with the community to a certain degree. I understand both our points of view and those of the rhino/gdm side. My point is that we are lucky as fans-simply fans-that we are treated to so many releases. I have had my issues with rhino/gdm over the years as well, frustratingly so in many cases. No one will ever confuse them for amazon when it comes to on time deliveries, returns, snafus, non-delivered packages, etc. This whole fiasco isn't going to endear them to any of us by any means, either. It's disappointing and frustrating for sure, but I just feel like both sides are handling this situation wrong. I would bet the next time something like this is released, measures will be taken to correct this. Let's give them one more chance. And I'm sorry if any of my posts were personal. I didn't mean them to be.

No that's just Ironman88's wry sardonic Aussie wit (call it what you will) tongue firmly in cheek gently poking fun from the safety of the other side of the world where the Dead feared to tread.

Ignore the vitriol of others, yours was a truly selfless and altruistic act of generosity. A more rapacious person might have SOLD his code for $86.94 plus postage and handling. Hey, no worries at all It's been a couple of years since I've spent $ on GD music, for all the reasons paraded here. But we all have a legitimate interest. One more chance? How many do need?
