Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Big Box Rollin' Down the Road...
Well, I submitted my email and name to reserve my Dead box (no, not my plain, pine burial box, but my Europe '72 Box). Here's hoping that's all good (tempted in my obsessive compulsive way, to submit again, just in case something went wrong, 20 years in IT taught me to be careful and redundant)! AFAIAC, it IS ALL GOOD, long as I get my bucks in a row by the time it is available to purchase, and that is definitely priority number one in my life right now, within reason, very thin...), but I digress. So far, this seems like the best way to go and the best system available to enable this. Of course, I'd love to be able to go into a store and purchase it, since I barely trust wire transfers, but I am willing to endure near anything, as long as I can get this set. Thank you, and remember, Grateful Dead itself used to judge itself on that last show, so let's make it as good a show as possible! I'm all for (persons responsible for this box and system) and all-in on this product. It's the emotions thatt listening to the music brings up, trancendant moments that can be relived even unto the deathbed (and being of sound mind and badly bent, but not broken, body, I hereby request that should the situation ever arise...) This is the potential grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to win the series highlight reel moment... as long as everyone gives it an honest, sincere 100% effort, keeping the Grateful Dead legacy and the fan's appreciation and dedication in mind, that will have been enough. ...the fact that we will have the entire tour to listen to in perpetuity is almost more than one could ask for, almost! Thank you all, and bless us all (or, heaven help the fool). ...AND NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS (in life)... ...WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS! (BOTH SHOWS!!!) This could be the Ultimate Christmas I never had! I can live with that... all the way until I'm... GRATEFULLY DEAD!

    Not this time
I have the Fillmore West and two Winterland boxsets. It's one thing to release a run of 3-5 shows at once but this is over kill. This limited edition crap only encourages thieves; who resell this stuff at rip-off prices on EBAY and Amazon. You'd think that GDM Rhino would have learned this lesson by now. Many more people will get bootleg copies from their friends too...

Hey all, I was extremely blessed to have received a code for the personalized set and placed my order yesterday for one set (only) . In fact, I ultimately received two (2) codes for the personalized set due to two different email addresses I originally provided. There was zero intent to defraud or disenfranchise anyone; just wanted to get an extra fighting chance during the early mayhem given the advance notice of server issues plaguing dead.net. Now it's time to give back. Not to point fingers, just to raise the spirits of one more deserving soul who tried unsuccessfully to get their own . It's only fair. No games. just doing the right thing. I will forward the extra code to one person based on kind responses in return. Winner will be notified on Friday 2/28 via return email. robshead@fastmail.fm Live and love.

a la the 1969 Fillmore West box set? I can't afford $450 and frankly, even if I could, would have a hard time justifying laying it for a box set. So my hope is that down the line a bit, a condensed version, say 15 discs of material not previously released on the original Europe 72, Hundred Year Hall or Rocking the Rhein, be mad available in the $100 range. THAT I would buy in a heartbeat. It was done with the 1969 Fillmore West box set, which I did buy in its entirety for about $100. A condensed version of like 2 or 3 disc was offered in the $30 range. A condensed version of the Europe72 box in the $100 range is the miracle I need.

Although I am one of the wondering masses who submitted a reservation after the ordering system crashed, and who has not yet received a confirmation e-mail (60 hours, more or less, since I made my reservation, hopefully for a box rather than just the music-only option), I honestly cannot understand HOW anybody can be calling $450 for this set a "rip-off." If you bought a 3-LP record containing a complete show in 1972, it would have cost you around $7.50 (single LP records typically could be had for about $2.50 most of the time, with each added record adding another $2.50 or so). Therefore, BACK THEN, this set would have cost around $165. That was when gasoline was $0.30/gallon (8% of now), comic books were $0.20 (7% of now), paperback books were $0.75 (8 - 10% of now), and a ticket to see the Dead was around $5.50 (6% - 9% of current prices for The Dead). Minimum wage was well under $2.00 (about 15% - 20% of now). Therefore, if the band wanted to REWARD us with pricing consistent with 1972, and only adjusted for inflation, the offering price would have been closer to $2,000. Something else to remember: we're NOT being offered the same recordings that you can download for free from Archive.org or bt.etree.org! These are from 16 track professional grade master tapes that have been carefully remixed, balanced, and (as much as possible) perfected. Even the SBD recordings from tape traders and Archive/etree downloads, no matter how well they are fussed with, cannot come close to this, because in ALL cases, those "taper" soundboards are stereo (that is, limited to 2 recording tracks) recordings. So, stop calling the Core Four and Rhino and dead.net a bunch of greedy thieves who aren't living up to the Grateful Dead ideal. This is a freakin' BARGAIN. Check out the list price on the one show from this tour to have been officially released on 3 CDs, "Rockin' the Rhein," and multiply 22 shows by its list price of $31.98 or even its Amazon.com discount price of $23.12, and you'll see that this set is being offered at a price break of between $50 - $250. If you don't want to save up your pennies for a Music Only set, you better get busy with the Archive.org and bt.etree.org downloads, because once the box starts shipping, those two sites are obligated by written agreement with the band to STOP offering soundboard recordings to be either torrented or directly downloaded (audience tapes can still circulate, just not soundboards). This isn't anything new, either--it's been the band's policy to ask traders to stop circulating soundboards on any officially released show for several decades, and the official policy of those sites (and even most less-legitimate sites, like dimeadozen.org) to delete any torrents that violate any band's official taping policy. Now is the time to start your torrents downloading, too--every new release, from Fillmore and Winterland boxes to Road Trips shows has sparked a flurry of pre-release last-chance torrent re-listings that get pulled from the torrent list on the official release date. Therefore, stop whining and suck up to the reality of having to settle for a very good deal on all 22 shows. If you want one and can't afford it YET, they'll probably produce enough Music Only sets to cover orders through to about Christmas 2011. Probably not much beyond that, however, because each set will take up a LOT of warehouse space. Personally, I remain optimistic about getting confirmed for one of the sets between #3000 - 7200, because the system and the staff WERE overwhelmed by the demand and there's only so many hours in any given day to ensure that the confirmation e-mails are accurate. However, if I'm in the group from #7201 - 25000, that's OK, too. By the way--that 25,000 sets number is absolutely NOT an accurate or official limit (I'll be surprised if the end total tops 15,000 sets). One thing, though--I don't see how it would hurt Rhino or the band to ship the "Music Only" sets in a slightly smaller protective case (no stash drawer, no space for a book, more functional than fancy in appearance), because that simple gift to "Music Only" purchasers will probably pay for itself in the form of reduced shipping damage requiring replacements...

No apologies here for Rhino, but Blair does say plainly some Rhinos are Deadheads. Truly believe they their synapses ain't firing completely anymore and they fuck up a lot and the more saner people have to undo their mayhem. Still not limiting this to one per customer? Very bad form. Hoping for more codes later on? I bet not -- and lots more E-Bay auctions - (Touch-holes!) This has to be the fasted thread to a thousand in dead.net history!

You stole a reservation slot for a box set you never had any intention of buying. Quit trying to rationalize that you were doing somebody a favor selling them that code for like $90 worth of merchandise, when if you had not stolen a place in line they might have gotten a reservation for free. You're just as much of a ripoff as the ebay slimebags in my opinion, taking advantage of somebody else. I only hope that the codes really are transferable so that person that bought you your shows doesn't get totally ripped off. I'm done even reading your posts. Go ahead and keep posting in all caps, it makes you easier to ignore. Enjoy your Dicks Picks, dick. PS @ Snark: I think archive.org's and etree's policy on soundboard recordings currently is streaming only (for the Grateful Dead, maybe others), even on shows that have not been "officially released", and for the GD at least that policy was only implemented after the Rhino agreement was signed.

Dead Ahead said: "Kennyw, you need to look up the phrase “silent majority”. I should have put the definition in parentheses for your benefit as I did the other word. Silent majority has a long history of usage prior to Nixon. My use of it was apropos and correct to my statement and has no political connotation or reference to Nixon whatsoever." I thought you were using the phrase "silent majority" in the sense that you were claiming to speak for the majority of DeadHeads and that those of us speaking up are messing things up for you all. That seems pretty Nixonian to me. Oddly enough, I've played more GD this week than I have for months. The jamming on movie soundtrack sounded sweet on the commute home this afternoon.

"Oddly enough, I've played more GD this week than I have for months. The jamming on movie soundtrack sounded sweet on the commute home this afternoon." The GD Movie soundtrack never gets called out enough, very underappreciated and that multi-disc soundtrack release (UNLIMITED!) was a good thing. I don't know about the "oddly enough" though, I've noticed that when things get all gnarly in Dead-land, when there is a "disturbance in the Force" you might say, the best way to recover one's mellow is...listen to some Good Old Grateful Dead. Go figure, the stuff that some folks get so wound up about is the same stuff that gets them so calmed down. Good call, kennyw, think I'll slip into disc four and smile, smile, smile :). Thanks friend! Peace, all.

So I get my code Sunday morning and wait until Sunday night to try and personalize and finalize my reservation only to find out that after trying 3 times my transaction couldn't be completed. I call my credit card company and was told by a service rep that the reason the transaction was declined was because the merchant was trying to charge your card NOW. The emails to me and also I have read on this site, state that my card would not be charged until September. Does anyone see a problem here???? Of course I emailed GD customer service and haven't heard back. I try again tonight to go through the order process and get a message stating that my code has already been used. Unbelievable Folks!!! I'm quite livid with all this and think whomever is running this CIRCUS should step aside and let someone else with brains, common sense, and basic knowledge take over. I've been ordering from GDM for years and this is not the first time I've had to deal with incompetence however this is by far the worse experience. When will you guys ever work out all these issues????

I have sympathy for whatever Heads there at Rhino, and a whole lot more for those at the coal face, the public faces hereabouts. Must be a bugger dealing with all the negativity. But it bears repeating: This is no one-off SNAFU; this has been going on for years. Some one somewhere is responsible for whatever it is - presumably lack of staff, funding, budgets, infrastructure, good contracts, planning and so on - that's causing all the mayhem. I presume that, as with all such cases in business and government, those responsible are further up the food chain and better paid. I wonder how many juicy consultant fees are being forked out?

I missed the chance to get the box set as my ISP had changed my email address a few days before so I was unaware of it until 24th Jan.I can't believe that it is not possible to increase the production run to accommodate more people - I'm sure that Deadheads who've already signed up wouldn't want other people to miss out because of the limited run and I also think that International Customers should have been better catered for to avoid huge postage and tax charges. Those of us in the UK who were at some of these shows are an obvious market for them! Come on Rhino, treat us a little better than allowing us to pay the same price for you to just run off some more cds. John Christian (at Wembley, Newcastle City Hall and The Lyceum 1972)

I got a personalized box, but, frankly, if I didn't, I don't think I'd be grousing. The music will be available on its own, and that's what counts. The book sounds interesting, but I really don't care about the case for the music. I think a lot of people here would do well to think about their priorities; the anger in this thread is quite astonishing. (I do feel that this was yet another dead.net snafu, but we should be used to them by now...)

Cards aren't being charged now, but there is a "hold" being put on them to cover this charge. I see it showing up as a "pending" transaction on my account, but the charge has NOT been added to my balance. The same thing happens when you book a hotel room...and in fact when you preorder, for example, a Road Trips. Nothing new, just a bigger charge than normal, and if you don't have room on your card for the charge, your credit card company will likely decline.

I reserved copies on Saturday morning and have yet to receive a code so I guess I missed out. I can live with that. It rankles me, though, that there's no discount for the stripped down box. Yeah, $450 for 60 discs is a pretty good deal but after the snafu with the limited editions it would smooth a lot of feathers to offer the music only for $300-$350.

Will the scalpers come out ahead? I dunno. Looks like ONE copy has actually sold on eBay for $1500. The poor fool buyer. Don't we all wish we could whisper in their ear: "Don't do it!!! You just paid $1050 for a goddamn coffee-table book! The music isn't sold out!!!!" But no-one here at dead.net will get "ripped off," because we know that. We know it isn't sold out. Anyone can get all the music if they want it. At a fair price. I'm done.

However, it has - and of course, already available, the Wembley Dark Star, IMHO the finest of all, finer that Veneta as it's core emotion is love and joy, whereas Veneta is terror ;-> Now, we all need a good scare now and again. but long term I go for love and joy. And the segues from this Dark Star into Sugar Mags and '68 style Caution.. Hallelujah Brothers and Sisters My reaction to witnessing this live after waiting for 5 years to see the band was ..... Holy shit. It's true. If you get confused eh? I used my three email addresses to request a code, on the basis that there would be some fuck up. I got a response and ordered for my usual email address, but unlike others, got no response on the other two addresses. Cluster fuck? Yes. Hippy cluster fuck? Indeedy. Chill folks. This whole process is rife with errors. First, why were the e-mail sent to Rhino subscribers first? If there was a problem with the Dead.net mail system the who process should have been done over through a lottery. Now that it's FUBAR let's put our heads together and try to make it work. Funny that when I first got the e-mail I sent two back just to be sure and got one e-mail confirmation Friday night! I have not used my code yet as i am waiting for a brother to tell me if he wants one (at cost). Since there is no limit I would order one for someone who got left out at cost when I think rationally about it.

After reading through the 1000 comments that I am embarrassed to call myself a deadhead. Calling people a douche bag?? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Blaming people, attacking people, throwing digs at people, name calling. This sounds more like a junior high school playground. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

i ordered my copy yesterday. i used my visa check card. within minutes of the purchase, my bank called me and asked if "i authorize the 450$ purchase from dead.net". i checked online this morning, and it looks like those funds are on hold, not exactly taken out. as for the free shipping stuff, i first entered my PO BOX, 12$...lol. so, i erased that and put my street address and the shipping became free. i cant wait for September!! Go Phillies!!

It's an ugly mess. Haves and have-nots. Can you guys afford to exclude and alienate all the people who STILL WANT THE FULL 72 BOX? You botched the production number, you didn't understand your fan base at all, you sold out in 96 hours -- and the production numbers can't be revised?? Can this be explained, please, in plain language?? The "music only" option is stupid and unacceptable. Read your own promotion copy: oh, it's the box of all boxes, with the ultimate book and all the unearthed treasures, it's a cultural event of the band in a classic era; we did it all for you...but, sorry, we sold them all (although they haven't been made yet.) Please explain to us what you lose by creating MORE boxes for the fans who have been with you for years. You stand to lose a whole lot on your present footing. This is a stupid, ugly mess; a big stupid wall you've put up between Deadheads. Someone needs to do the right thing.

Yes, but it's $450 that ISN'T available as it is being held. Same thing as if it was charged right now. $450 being held is the same thing - money that is being locked up.

I've got to say, the very first post in this long, strange thread couldn't be any more on the money: "This release is going to make some people very happy and a whole bunch of people really sad." There's an idea floating around out there that notification of this set was sent to Road Trips subscribers first. Not true. I'm a Road Trips subscriber, and I wasn't sent the email until Saturday morning. (And I didn't SEE it until Sunday.) Needless to say, I missed the bus. I'm sorry for all my fellow fans who missed out on this set. The "music only for the same amount of cash" option is a slap in the face. Let's hope someone gets shown the light and INCREASES PRODUCTION on the full box set so that everyone who wants to buy one can have one.

To TPTB, on the next big release only release the music just like the Road Trips are released. I don’t understand the materialistic mind sets on display. The Europe ’72 music is available; you can still buy it if you are a fan of the music. The book and the other items will be looked at once and put away (more clutter). The items that came with the Warlocks set; I looked at once and haven’t looked at them again. The music I’ve played over and over. Veruca Salt is alive and well and wants everything now.

I was hoping the sets would not sell out so quickly, I needed time to get my money together. But more than anything I am disappointed that the regular music set will not be reduced in price at all. The rest of us will not get the fancy boxes, or personalization or shiny books with never before seen photos, yet we have to pay the same price? That hardly seems fair and seems contradictory to the Dead's practices... I am all for you guys making money, but this seems like, hey lets screw the people who didn't have $450.00 to blow at a moments notice and charge them the same for less product. One man gathers what another man spills.

After a few days of cooling off after getting shut out due to lack of response from dead.net, here's a rationalization. Yes, it the way this went down sucks. Unfortunately, Rhino has had fiascos like this with other bands. They don't care who gets the sets as long as they move the units. And yes, the GD organization (that may be the wrong word for it) also has a history of having a good idea, poorly executing it, throwing up their hands and letting folks stew if they get upset. However, there is a bright side, and it's not really the opportunity to purchase the music only edition at the same price as the complete box, because, nobody really *has* to buy the music only edition. It'll be widely available anyway through other means just like anything else these days. But the production work will have been done, so there will be a whole tour's worth of excellent recordings and performances out there. And if you're so pissed about how things went down that you don't want to give these guys your money, you'll still get to hear it, have FLAC back-ups, be able to burn the portions of the shows you're interested in, and save $450. Which ain't so bad either in the long term.

Your exactly right. To add further embarrassment they collectively decided to piss and dig themselves a deeper hole by screwing us guys who missed out earlier while the eBay horders get there ten copies to sell. Guess I'm going to be searching demonoid.com in Sept.

I am curious to know how it is possible that this sold out days ago i.e. they had sold 7200 copies or sent out 7200 confirmations, but not everybody has used their codes yet to actually order it - and when they do, they can seemingly order as many copies as they want. If everyone who has confirmation but still hasn't ordered sat down and ordered 10 copies each what would happen?

OK I wasn't going to comment but after reading all of this mishogas, I felt the need. First..about the credit card charges. Dead.net puts a $450 hold on your credit card (not a charge). Most credit card companies give the person who is charging these funds 3-7 days to produce a purchase slip. If the purchase slip is not produced to the cc company the hold is dropped. What Dead.net is trying to do, is verify that you are using an actual card (just like a hotel reservation, as was stated earlier). Not to be judgemental ( I know us deadheads are not supposed to be but...) If you are being declined for a $450 purchase on a Credit Card, you should probably rethink purchasing something for $450. Second, As far as all the whining on this site goes, please people, cut it out. If the cost is too much, don't buy it. If the "all music" versions are not the cost you wanted them to be, Don't buy it. All there has been is complaint after complaint after complain. Truth of the matter is, a lot of you are saying F*** dead.net, F*** Rhino, but when the next release comes out you will all be on the bandwagon one more time. We have all been here before. The Grateful Dead are very smart business people and they know what they are doing. I'm sure that they will try to do something to accomadate the people who did not get the E'72 boxset, the same way they did for the Fillmore release. As far as the cost goes, does anyone here have any idea what it costs to remaster 60+ discs? No...neither do I but I am sure it's not cheap. Think about the time and overhead it takes to remaster 22 shows @ 3 to 4 discs per show. C'mon give these guys a break. At this point, it seems to me that if they were able to accomodate everyone, someone would still find something to piss and moan about. Hang in there everyone, there's sunshine on the horizon. Have a Grateful Day. Cheers.

I seem to recall that back in 1972 when the Europe '72 LP was released the packaging included an invitation to Deadheads to connect with the band's organization. I believe this was the beggining of the unique, loving, mutually respectful, and mutually benificial connection that this audience has maintained with the band's marketing arm throughout the years. How fitting to see the unraveling of that relationship tied to the release of this 1972 material. And how sad.

So I've never posted here but have been a 30yr supporter of the Grateful Dead going back to mail ordering for tix in the 80s/90s and ordering every single live release they've ever offered, including the Fillmore box, all Dicks, Road Trips, etc. Similar to others, I registered for this release first thing upon email receipt, but of course quickly noticed the debacle and fact there were errors. However, like others, I manage to get through and was sent an email to respond to (to register my order). I promptly did this and was sent another email on Fri: "Tour Europe '72: The Complete Recordings Reservation Confirmation". Notice it read "confirmation". Further, the body of the email stated the email from Rhino/Dead reads "Thank you for reserving your personalized edition of Europe '72...." and confirms they "have reserved 1 copy(copies) for you". This was on Fri a.m. Like others, I have yet to receive a code to order (not to spam or email). I spoke with customer service 3x yday and they recognized that "official" email and they told me I was still guaranteed a personalized edition, that the email with the code will arrive shortly. Still nothing today so I called and they told me they are sold out and that I would not be receiving a code. They apologized, etc. As a lifelong supporter, I am incredibly unhappy with the treatment of dedicated Heads like myself and others. I have since canceled my pre-ordered Road Trips for this year and will no longer support this organization with their offerings. They have terribly mishandled this and ultimately they have permanently alienated fellow fans like myself. We each make our own decisions and I'm not necessarily encouraging others to do the same, but given such poor treatment I'm not sure how we can accept this mishandling and misreprentation of the truth. They should've quickly addressed and ameliorated this, rather than ultimately lie and mislead. There were many ways they could've treated the fans better but chose not to..now the ebay-ers and the like have control rather than the long time loyal fans. A very unfortunate outcome but this organziation will never see another dime from me. So as far as supporting the Dead from a commerce standpoint, that music has stopped. They have thought myopically, short-term rather than long term. They have forever lost my revenue stream.

All I can say it is sad that the greatest live musicians in the history of rock n roll left their legacy with such a myopic, incompetent, bumbling, unsophisticated organization. Perhaps the saddest part is that they might have even had their hearts in the right place this time, but certainly not their heads. As far as people telling other people to stop complaining, the sheer number of complaints makes clear that there are real, substantial issues that never seem to get addressed, and not a case of people just whining. "Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own."

All the apologists for the E72 debacle should read wdovan's post, above. He states that he got a confirmation email for a personalized box set but that customer service is refusing to honor his confirmed reservation. If true, that is proof enough for me that I am not getting a box set. (I "reserved" on Friday night and again on Saturday afternoon after the Dead.net announcement of the Friday glitch, but I never received any email responses.) This wdovan situation is so far beyond the bounds of acceptability that it shocks the conscience. The whole ordering process should have been halted and rebooted after the Friday glitch was discovered. The person(s) who made the decision not to reboot should be fired. I don't care anymore if I get an E72 box, but wdovan (and anyone else in his situation) should get a box ... along with a personal apology from TPTB.

As reservations come in (multiple or not) they are toted up, when 7200 pings - that's it, sold out. As for those codes that decline for credit now through Sept. ---- well, if they don't come out here something tells me a lot of auctions will come up. One never knows where those extras might go - to the Rex Foundation or other worthy things maybe? Hey, I'm trying to be positive. I certainly hope we see them here and not in the hands of "insiders" with gross profit motives, but it is their property to do as they please. Whoever said the Dead were not free enterprise and not declared socialists?

Basically 1,000 post in less than a week. There are ton of hurt feelings, frustrations, hostilities, and anger here - which is totally understandable given the context of the music, era, money, and snafus involved. What I find even more curious is - except for the recently posted set available as 'music only' blurb, is the total silence from the powers that be on all this. Surely they are reading these postings or are at least aware of them. In this case, silence is not golden........

quit bitching everybody you all claim that its about the music and dead.net is making it all about the money but honestly they also released the music as a standalone if you really cared about the music then just buy it who cares if its 450 do you know how much money 22 cds would cost buying them individually at retail prices. Really your just buying in bulk, get over it....most of you would proably buy an ounce of weed for nearly that much or spend that much money on booze over the course of the month and what about all you cigarette smokers...come on you know how much you spend every year on vices...but you dont bitch constantly when your camels go up in price you just suck it up and suck'em down...so stop bitching and get the music be happy its being remastered and released in bomb sound quality...grow up most of you are in your forties or later...by the sound of these posts, americans are the entitled gimme-gimmes that the rest of the world thinks we are

IMHO, if Rhino would simply drop the limited editions, take pre-orders for some period of time, produce as many as they need to fulfill the orders (with a some left over for the late comers), then the fan base would be happy and Rhino would make the required cash. The limited editions taint the whole thing for me. If I can't get a copy I wish I had, if I do get a copy I feel guilty because others couldn't get one. It's just not clean. The people grabbing these releases for quick resale on ebay should be ashamed of themselves.
