Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Code expiration
I believe the next round of code expirations happen today where they'll go to the next round of folks with the music only reservations. As far as Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, I have the Complete Bitches Brew Sessions box. Good stuff. Always makes for great middle of winter - late night listening.

    dark side of collecting cds
Sure they use motivations such as a limited edition...sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't with Miles Davis it might work since there's more substance than say the Monkees, the Monkees had a limited edition live box set (not really a box) but it took 4-6 years to sellout it's 10,000 quota...I don't think i'll spend 450$ on another tour, unless it really blows me away, it would have to be in the 1969-1973 pocket...i like all periods of the Dead but for me to hear a series of shows from everynight it would have to be in that pocket...i say this now of course, but if that moment arises i don't know what i'd think...the Beatles Christmas album isn't a big deal...i think anyone can get it, there's downloading sites as well as trading sites for the Beatles...and it was originally available to it's Beatle Club fans as an LP and most likely always available as a bootleg in big city record stores i persume...definitely not worth paying 100$ for as there's not much by way of music on that...really not much else on the Beatles you could want to listen to...alot of artists are really thin in terms of their outtakes and/or live performances...with the Dead it works because they were sort of like jazz musicians and didn't necessarily stay in the same place with songs and so you didn't grow bored of them even if they sang the same set...more so now than in it's time, they were careful not to repeat themselves or put out too much...now they're willing to put out alot because there's no turning back and nothing entirely new to put out...they're no longer thinking about if people will buy their new record with a new sound since there won't be a new album...so far nothing on the all music version of the box set at least not for me.

Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more'Cause when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door Think this through with me, let me know your mind Wo-oh, what I want to know is, are you kind? who, in there right mind, would pay 1500 to 2000 for this? Right now it's the hype that would get a head to buy this for that price, calm down, take a deep breath, take a step back what ever it takes and let this blow over for a week or so, don't be a fool and buy from ebay or any other auction site, let those who wanted to profit from this eat them, I bet after they lose the initial investment for their 10 boxes, they will be begging some one to buy it, for what ever they can get for it. You know, I thought this was a great thing, but it has been tainted by anger, greed and resentment, I don't even know if I want a set now, can I cancel my order?get my money back? Let's all cancel our orders and tell them the only way they understand, thru the bank account, that this kind of treatment won't be tolerated now or in the future. "Free the Jams for everyone"

I almost regret buying this box set now. It seems tainted. After thinking about it for a few days, I am thinking, "Why do I need 22 Me N MY Uncles, Ramble On Roses etc.?". How much is enough? I only listen to the Grateful Dead on a calendar basis (March shows in March, April Shows in April etc.) So I will only be listening to this stuff two months out of the year, plus I have lots of other listening to do from the months that encompassed the Europe 72 tour. It will be pretty fun though. I called GDM right after I purchased the set yesterday and saw the $450.00 charge pop up. I sure don't want a $450.00 hold on my account for 8 months. The guy at GDM stated that they wanted to make sure that funds were initially available for the purchase so a bunch of people wouldn't order it and not actually ever pay for it. He informed me that the charge will vanish in several banking days and then reappear on some unknown day in September. That makes me worry a little bit. Anyway, I went with the St Dilbert Hypnocracy quote for my personalization. I hope it fits and looks right. I was vacillating on buying this now or a little closer to the April time line. Yikes, there was much more interest in this than I ever thought. I wonder, if peoples Credit Cards are being declined, do I move up? Could I still possible get a boxed set? nah In hindsight, the shopping cart should have initially limited the amount of copies per order (to like only ONE), to marginalize the brokers. Then, as demand ebbed, increase the available purchase quantity. The upside to dead.net would be more satisfied customers, but the downside would be slower initial sales.

It upsets me that people like wdvoan is told the box is sold out even after he successfully reserves a box set. This is probably because people who got codes that resevered one copy, found out that they could order more than one copy and probably did so. I call "foul". And to Shrewnews, I am a Road Trips subscriber and I got an advance e-mail on Wednesday 1/19 about 3 hours before the box was officially to go on sale that "something BIG" was coming to Dead.net at 12pm PST. So it is true that "some" Road Trips subscribers got e-mails - I did, but true to form for all things Dead.net, others like yourself did not. I truly hope that Dead.net, GDM, Rhino and even the remaining band members weigh in on this debacle and make things right for those "heads" that thought they reserved copies in good faith, but now find out it was all for naught.

I 'reserved' one copy of the limited set, received an email confirmation that it was, in fact, reserved and then nothing. No follow up email...nothing. So I called CS and they said I am out of luck. So anyone waiting on a code - forget about it. How on EARTH can they send out an email saying a copy of the set is reserved for me and then sell it to someone else!??? This is beyond infuriating. Congrats to everyone that was successful...and if anyone has an extra code and doesn't plan on using it, I would love to have it (like everyone else!)

Monday's come and gone, and Tuesday too, and I've still received no e-mail response to the reservation I placed late Saturday afternoon UK (GMT) time, which I guess made it early morning over there in the US, so I guess I've missed out. Assuming this, a Road Trips subscription now seems like a very poor substitute, and I just don't think I'll be able to face making such. As to multiple purchases for profit, it seems to happen more and more, whether it be concert tickets or even in-demand kids toys for Xmas. You'd think though, particularly after the problems highlighted with other limited releases, that Rhino and The Dead themselves would have been a bit more sussed! Obviously not!!!

Being that it has always been one of the most popular and sought after tours by tape collectors, it was a guarentee that this would be on the top of the coveted list and sell out fast. Even if this were limited to one per customer, it would have sold out fast. The same for the FW '69 Box and the same would happen with the May '77 and Spring '90 runs if offered up similarly, though it's been stated that Cornell is NOT in the vault. I believe that it is/will mainly be the multi-track sets that get the limited treatment like this meaning that Radio City Music Hall/Warfield '80 or Summer/Fall/New Years/Winter/Spring '89-'90 tours (which would be a 64 show box at a minimum of 190 discs - yikes, hate to see the price tag for that) could potentially get the same treatment. Seeing as how the music only version is available, I'm personally more at ease. I personally believe that the FW '69 shows should be re-issued, even as music only as it's waaaay to important. Limiting these to one per customer/home address/email address/credit card/forum account would minimize some of the hostilities by the folks who missed out on the big box.

The big problem here is the whole "limited edition" thing. Once they announce that it is a limited edition, and people buy it, they can't go back and change that. I am sure at least one of the 7200 people who will get this would sue (ESPECIALLY people who bought it with the intended purpose of reselling). They were buying under the stated premise that it was going to be limited. I think everyone who wants one and is willing to pay should get it. This should have been at least open for a month, and limited to however many people order within a month, rather than a specific predetermined number. And to anyone who bought this with the intention to sell it for more than they paid as soon as possible, %$^& YOU &$$HOLE!

With a heavy heart I decided to pass on this one and having read through this thread I'm glad I did.Just too much hassle involved.I already owned Live Dead but it was Europe 72 that made me commit myself to getting on board.I already have the official releases and 10 soundboards and do I really need another 22 Mr Charlies?450 English pounds for 8 concerts is a bit rich Maybe in the future they will make individual concerts available and then I can cherry pick the best concerts.Off the top of my head I'd go for Newcastle,Copenhagan first night,Rotterdam and the last night in London. Rhino seems to have made a real mess of this and I expect heads will roll.I hope everything gets sorted out and all you people get to listen to this great music in pristine sound.Happy listening in September

I agree with dstache, except there may be a good reason for doing a limited edition that we do not know about. That said, there is no reason not to offer the music only (unlimited or limited time only) version upfront at a lower price ($420 would have been perfect).

I lost out on this deal but do relish in the fact that this will be one of the most pirated box sets of all time...which will cost Rhino millions of dollars because of their stupidity. In the end, we lose out a little bit, but Rhino loses a ton!

I'm a lucky one on this, and was lucky on the 30 days contests. Not so lucky on the FW box or the presale Furthur tix for the Tower. So I got a few and lost a few, so be it. Managed to get the FW on ebay and will pay a premium for the Tower shows. Been a follower since the mid-70's. Now to the point- I don't care what number my limited set is going to be, nobody should. So with that said and the fact that manufacturing hasn't began, just open it up. I don't see any negative implications for all to get a personalized set if they order by March 1. How about non-personalized, numbered sets offered from March 1 to April 1. Then a certain number complete and music only sets depending on the previous numbers ordered to round out production. We get product, they sell preduct, everybody's happy. "And I'm Going Where Those Chilly Winds Don't Blow"

After 30 years, I am embarrassed by the this dead.net site, the community, and the lack of response from the Rhino or Dead.net. Sure doesn't seem like anyone care much, so neither will I anymore. A big thanks to the GD for many years of great music, and for all of those outrageous life experiences that come with the territory. My life is richer, but wanting to maintain the good feelings means getting off of this crazy bus right now! Time to sit back and enjoy the memories and the music, and turn away from the business of the Grateful Dead. In case you guys haven't figured it out, it's no longer about the Grateful Dead. Even the almighty community has shown us that todays head, is different from yesterdays. I choose yesterdays and bid you all "a good night".

... there is no reason why GDM/Rhino cannot cancel ALL pending orders and set up a fair lottery system for the 7,200 boxes (assuming the number has to remain at 7,200, which always struck me as an arbitrary and wildly too low cut-off). Those lucky few who got a confirmed order the first time around would be disappointed, of course, but that does NOT mean that they have a legal claim against GDM/Rhino. My understanding is that no one's credit card has yet been charged. Accordingly, those with reservations are free to back out of purchasing the box. Lkewise, GDM/Rhino is, I submit, free to back out of SELLING the box. So, GDM/Rhino, it is time to step up and do the right thing: Cancel all pending box set orders, blame it on the screwed-up ordering system, and then engage an OUTSIDE consultant to set up a lottery system so that we can all have a shot at the boxes. Oh, and one more thing: Please reduce the price of the "music only" option by an amount commensurate with the cost of the box set packaging materials and extras that are excluded. It is beyond insulting to offer up the "music only" option at the same price as the supposedly extraordinary box set.

Reserved 1 copy on Saturday morning. Did not receive an email response. Called customer support today and was told that all of the emails have already gone out. It really bothers me when I'm promised something (being told I can reserve a copy) and now I find out that it's not going to happen. What makes it even worse is I purchase almost every release they put out and always purchase from this site, even though I could probably find a better deal elsewhere. I refuse to purchase the stripped down version for the same price as this does not even come close to offering something to the fans who reserved a copy but are now told they will not receive it. Unless they decide to manufacture more box sets for those who missed out or offer a significant discount on the stripped down version, I'm done with purchasing GD music. There are too many other ways for me to hear this music without sending my hard earned money to a group of people who seem to not really care about their fans or customers.

If you are interested in a good laugh, here is a post from Blair Jackson from Jan 19 (see page 10) re: someone's concern that this would sell out before they were able to replace their missing credit card (or something like that): "Don't worry... On January 19th, 2011 blairj said: ... It's not going to sell-out in ten days. Sorry about your experience, ironman, but I think you'll be OK.... Honest... Now, everyone take a deep breath..... innnnnnnnnn..... ouuuuuuuuut! Good. All will be resolved in due time." I remember thinking at the time, I would be very worried as I thought the personalized versions would sell out within a day or two, assuming they could accept all those orders, and the remaining versions in another couple of days. This is nothing against Blair, but I think it does show that people on "the inside" don't quite get it. I know that I bring this up all the time, but many of the releases to me are kinda silly in that they replicate shows that aren't that great (UNLIKE this tour!!!) AND already circulate in close to pristine SBD. There has been some talk about Spring 77 and Spring 90. The former includes a bunch of Apr and early May shows that desperately need some cleaning up. The latter probably doesn't. And while I like Spring 90, c'mon, if you think Spring 90 is as good as Spring 77, you might as well say that Kenny G is as good a sax player as John Coltrane. I've posted something similar and someone responded with something like "what, do you expect them to check archive.org and other known trading places to find out what is in circulation? That's crazy!" Uh, YES, I do expect that. It would take a matter of minutes. These are just examples of the inner circle not getting it. I think they are trying, though. And we all have to admit that they let us post here without doing much if any censoring. That's pretty cool.

What an incredible release, thank you to Jeffrey Norman, David Lemieux, etc who spend hours remastering the music and providing us the ability to purchase pristine copies of these shows. It is unfortuante that the demand for this was grossly under-estimated. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to reserve and pre-order 1 copy. I am ok with a limited edition version, however I also think a music only option should have been available from the get go. I also don't think it is right that those who successfully reserved a copy and received confirmation that they had a copy(copies) reserved are now unable to get the box. With it being a limited edition, how can you allow to order more than you reserved, this is shocking and unfair to those who reserved sucessfully. The right thing for GDM/Rhino to do is cancel any quantities pre-ordered above the successful reserved copies. I don't know how they can manage the 7200 boxes by allowing people to pre-order more than what was reserved. If they were worried about meeting production costs, they should have started with the reservation process in the first place (maybe even with a small refundable deposit). GDM/Rhino, you have a loyal and willing customer base, you need to make some things right here. If someone missed out on the box because it truely sold out, so be it, the music only option is still available, however, for those that ordered above their reserved quantity, you should be making these available to those who had confirmed emails they reserved a copy.

Sure, cancel all the pending orders and have a lottery. And if certain people still lose out cancel all the pending orders again and have another lottery, and if certain lose out again cancel all the pending orders and have yet another lottery, and if certain people lose out again - should I really continue.

Apples and oranges. I for one like both but prefer Spring '90. I also prefer Coltrane, not really a Kenny G fan. Branfords no Coltrane, but he's still an awesome sax player, and I would gladly be the first in line to jump on the box set.

Get in touch with the people from Mosaic Records. They have been doing limited edition individually numbered box sets for years. They have 1,000 sets manufactured (I'm not sure of the exact number) and when it gets close to running low, they have another 1,000 made. This continues until the set is slow moving off the shelf and then they announce the supply is running low. That means no more will be made. Mosaic gets a license to manufacture a set number of sets, be it 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 since they do not own the music. Since this is not the case with Rhino and GD, I would think that you would not have to limit it to a specific number. Just keep manufacturing small batches of box sets until the demand drops off. Each one can still be individually numbered if that's important to you. It means nothing to me.

$450 for all the bells and whistles still makes the initially released box set VERY cheap, in regards to both the music and the bells and whistles. At $450 for 60+ discs, the music very cheap. But also think of the box, the book, the pics, the liner notes...how much cheaper does the production/inclusion of these things make the music? IT IS A BARGAIN. $450 for music-only still makes 60+ CD's only around $7-8 per CD, and $25-30 per show. I don't see why everyone is complaining, since Road Trips and live show CD's on tour are around $25 each. The box and book are gone from the price, but really, it doesn't matter because in my opinion, the $450 covers the cost of music quite well. FOR 60+ CDs.

It had all of us rushing to get our reservation in, but in light of the demand, make enough for all. These sets won't de-value because 14,400 are made instead of 7200, and if so, only to the re-seller for the immediate temporary future. I appreciate all the parties making this monster offering available but in light of the technical issues and at this very early stage, meeting all demand is best course.

What a screw job!! I don't get to check e mail for a weekend, and I completely miss this!!! Dammit!! I get everything they put out on here and would not have thought twice about getting the box set...I wonder how many of these are going to end up on E Bay? I suppose I will just have to setle for the "music only edition"...for the same price as the full blown box set...

I notice that several more of these have popped up, all for between $1100 up to $1500. If a person buys two, sells one to cover the cost of a freebie sencond copy, you are no better than bootleg for profit scumbag pirates.

that I will not be getting this awesome box set even though I reserved one Friday night and it really sucks. I'll surely get over it in time, but it would be very nice to have one of the higher ups involved come here and explain their side of the story. Just a little closure is all.

How about they make another massive amount of 'promo' copies. They seemed to be the predominate type on ebay and amazon when searhing for the FW box.

Just for the record, that's the subject line from my email from Rhino/Dead dated 1/21 3:25:39AM EST. Here's the content: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Dead Head, Thank you for reserving your personalized edition(s) of Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings. This email confirms that we have reserved 1 copy(copies) for you. We will reach out to you as soon as possible with the next steps to place your order. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. The Dead.net Team ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Of course I trusted this email was official and the content of it meant something (ie, your word means something I thought)...I was profoundly mistaken as clearly there's no honor from this organization. As mentioned, I called the CAL-DEAD number 3x yday and customer service told me they would honor this and I would soon be receiving a code to purchase. As stated earlier in this thread, no email arrived. Today on my call to CAL-DEAD they apologized and said this is not the case, it's sold out and they will not honor this email or my documented calls yesterday. There is no code. Complete misrepresentation on their part. This experience and poor customer service is unacceptable. Listening to the Dead's music has not stopped, it never will for me. But this situation has forever tainted my support of their commercial endeavors. As stated, I am no longer of customer of this organziation. They should be ashamed. Very disappointing.

Wish they would offer more than 7200 amount of box sets for those of us who missed out. I don't think many here are concerned about the "limited addition" aspect rather than it being offered to all that want it. Also, the "music only" edition should be offered for a lessor amount of money than the full box set. I wanted the full box set but was too late. I signed up for the "music only" edition and haven't received a confirmation email for that yet. Is there going to be a cap on that amount as well? Sadly, Jonny

I wonder is this massive release will ever be sold show-by-show / indiviudaly...i'd love to get my hands on the "official" 5-7 ; 5-11 ; 5-23 shows. I let a guy have my code for the box set (i decided not to buy it), and he bought me DP 4 ; DP 36 and the fillmore 69 3 cd from the gd store as a thank you........

There are two good options here: Option # 1 : Increase the number of box sets to meet the demamd. Allow anyone who does not like this (most likely re-sellers, sclapers etc.) to cancel all or part of their order. Everyone is happy except the scalpers. Rhino will not get sued and even if they did, the product has not even been produced or sold and no one has been charged. Even if a lawyer took the case (which I find highly unlikely) the case would be thrown out on a motion to dismiss. Option # 2: Cancel any orders that exceed the reserved quantity. This at least complies with the diclosures made during the offer. Thanks.

How about a hard drive option? Keeps the 7200 limited edition cd legal issue all tidy and may meet the high demand still unresolved.

Well, now we appear to have 2 issues: 1./ Their reservation form sucks: people entered their details and never got any reservation confirmation. As if that wasn't bad enough: 2./ People who DID receive a PROMISE that a set had been reserved for them, and who thought they were safe from this mess, are not getting anything. I can't even understand how this 2nd situation could possibly occur.

With the huge cluster f*** in ordering I would think they would make good on this to everyone by tweaking this #'s. I was so stoked when I got the early bird warning about this because I bought my subscription to the road trips and I put in for this as soon as I could only to be shut out by an overwhelmed server or something. I buy everything that comes out and I really am grateful for the wealth of material that comes out, but I feel like GD/Rhino blew this one. With this being one of the things that I and everyone else dreamed about for years I am just a little disheartened by the piss poor organization of selling this one. I also think it is a little crappy that we are now offered just the CD's for the same price. This limited edition box set should have been limited to 1 per order too, i am certain that a large number of them will be offered for well over $450 in September, just in time for Chirstmas. I am sorry for venting here, I normally don't do things like this, I am just a little upset about this one.

I'm not a legal expert, I just play one on dead.net, but if there is truly "MISREPRESENTATION" by the Rhino Corporation, well then maybe, just maybe, there will have to be a lawsuit!!! I'm thinking "Class Action" at this point, but who knows? Let's get in on this boat before it sails boys. We all know too well the consequences of missing out. Please no "you snooze, you lose" cliches now! (Listening to the bonus disc on the GDMovie DVD) It's soothes my soul!

The price should be reduced for the non-limited music only sets... RE: my prior post Update: I did get an email with my reservation code, and it appears to have worked just fine. So if you reserved there is still a good chance you will be fine. Gr8fuljess One man gathers what another man spills.

I just logged on to reserve my boxset today. Why didn't I do it before? I'll tell you why: because I still couldn't find any information about the (no doubt considerable) international shipping costs! You got to admit, it's a factor. So today I decided, what the hell, I'll get it anyway...only to find the deal's gone down. Now, I'm not one to whinge, but my nose is a little bit out of joint about this. Surely you want some of those boxes to make it over to Europe (I live in Paris)? Come on, guys! Stretch a point!

Can we please stop talking about law suits here? This band has been very good to all of us, they have earned all that they have and really changed my life and thousands of others. Mistakes happen and there is certainly room enough for disappointment, but lets not forget that they shared their music with us for free while other bands were suing their fans. I certainly would never entertain the though of suing the very people who have brought me so much joy over the years... One man gathers what another man spills.

Where I work, if we have more orders than what we have in stock we can’t immediately offer the customers more product. We would have to check the ability of our sub-suppliers to meet the additional need. I doubt if Rhino is producing the books, case, and other items. Maybe they need time to check with their suppliers if additional units could be produced, lead time involved, and cost/manpower associated with additional units. Keep in mind, everything sold out over the weekend so the people in charge of this release couldn’t come back and promise more units until the proper investigation was made. I am not saying any of this is happening, I am only pointing out that Rhino can’t snap their fingers and get additional sets. Do you not think that the design of the product, the mastering of the disc (60 plus), the time required to put 7,200 together and ship might equal a September time frame? That could be why the music only option was added. I hope the hotheads in this forum didn’t infuriate TPTB enough to prevent this from happening.I also can't believe someone mentioned a lawsuit. WTF, it is only a box of music.

Enough already with the bashing each other. That is all. Expressing one's opinion about the handling of this release and how one has fared therein is one thing. Calling each other names and telling each other where to go in profane and abusive terms is unacceptable here. Cut it out. Thank you.

When I received an order code I was surprised to see that I could order any number of them. When I saw that I thought that the number of order codes must be very low or else there would have been a customer order limit given with the code. My second thought was, if not, how would they guarantee that every code would be honored if they had no idea how many boxes would be ordered per code. Also, I was advised that I could wait to order for up to two weeks using my code. Next thing you know the box was announced as sold out. Creates dilemmas all around: they announced ahead not only limited edition but limited to 7200 copies which created a warranty to the prospective purchaser but also when your code was represented to be good for order for two weeks that was an affirmative representation as well-so when people were told their code was no longer operative that creates a problem too. What is solution? Offer the music as they have done and hope that all is well. Learn from this for the future-a limited edition could be offered without a specific number, or a large number or a limited time of publishing-say one year. It doesn't necessarily tell them how much cash flow however if they are attempting to guarantee initial cost investment so go back to "we need X amount of pre-orders by Y date to commit to production-after that create additional as needed to meet demand, until number or time is reached.

I saw at least 10 copies of the "1 in 3,000 personalized box sets" on eBay and one already sold for $900.00. The others are asking in excess of $1,000 per set. One seller from Alpharetta, GA has FIVE box sets for sale in one listing! Give everyone a chance to buy one before allowing multiple purchases! Rhino, you have outdone yourself this time! I wonder how many "help a brother out" posts here are actually scalpers looking for a quick buck. I was thrilled to read in another forum that this tour would be released (I never got the initial e-mail). I was angry and upset at all the problems with ordering last week. I was hopeful when the "reserve a copy" link went up. Now I'm just sad at what this has become. Please get it right next time.

I can only hope that the 22 shows are entered into evidence and the Court is required to enjoy every last note. A few twirlers in the courtroom would be nice too, Perhaps the Jury can also decide which Mister Charlie is the Best! Deliberations could go on for months! Have a laugh and let's enjpy the great music. They just played the full 7/16/76 Orpheum (SF) show on Sirius! I recommend you check it out! "You can't find a ride like that no more"

In my opinion, 20% of posts on here could be responded to with "So don't buy it." 20% - "But you can get the music!" 20% - "You do realize it costs time and money for them to produce these things." 20% - "Amazing how a supposed deadhead would resort to name calling." 20% - "Good post. Sometimes the internet doesn't work well. It happens." ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.
