    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

    At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen.     Echoing Dedicated and Mike Edwards.... There's the steamer trunk full of CD's.....Spring is coming......40 years later....maybe this was the whole idea after all. Take your trunk on a road trip/river cruise/couch tour.....whatever. Paris in the Spring!

    Finally listened to all of it!
    It took me a while - probably longer than it should have done - but I have finally listened to this monster in its entirety. I can happily report 73 fully functioning, unscratched discs and 22 intact, untorn sleeves. In my opinion the whole thing was really well put together. The steamer trunk is great, the hardback book is superb and it is nice to have a copy of "The book of the Dead" at last. My only possible complaints concern the cardboard sleeves which are undoubtedly less than ideal, borne out by the evidence that the more ham-fisted among us have torn many of them, and the lack of additional goodies such as maps etc. That said, it is obvious that if the shows had come in "Digipaks" which are at least twice as thick as the card sleeves then the trunk would also have been twice the size which in turn would have increased the manufacturing and shipping costs. When this thing was first announced it was said to contain more than 60 discs whereas it finally contained 73 which again should have upped the price. As it was too late to do anything about the price, I guess they cut back on the extras to keep it within budget. Personally I find it preferable that the shows have been spread over extra discs to avoid ill-timed disc changes rather than including, say, a map of Europe.As regards the music itself (the whole point of the exercise) it is wondrous. There are no bad shows included merely for the purpose of completeness. Of course some shows are better than others, but there are no shows here that are not worthy of release. It could be said (and indeed it has been said) that there is not a whole lot of variation in the setlists, but that is probably the case in any run of 22 shows. I do not have a problem with 15 excellent versions of a fine song, and when it comes to epics such as "Dark star" the variation in the different renditions is astonishing. That I am fortunate enough to have this box and its wonderful contents makes me one happy man and I congratulate all those responsible for getting it to us. Having said all that, I am aware that some folks had major problems with ordering and receiving their boxes. This is not the first time that such problems have reared their ugly heads, but I hope that Rhino and Globalware have learned from their mistakes this time. As regards the best shows, I would place Rotterdam top of the list, with Amsterdam, Bickershaw, Paris (x2) and The Lyceum (x4) also being superb performances.

but you're an idiot if you give in to these ebay scalpers. It's one thing to go on ebay for the Fillmore West '69 box set- since the music was only made officially available, otherwise, in a condensed form, but there has been no indication that the Europe 72 music-only edition will be limited. I'm sure I don't have to tell most of you that, just wanted to throw it out there. Come on everyone, let's use our heads.

I have been reading this forum for three days and it seems that everone, including me have solutions for this problem. Many people are suggesting the cancellation of all pending orders and starting over. Is that really fair to people who got in on it when it was announced? You snooze you lose is the old saying and it certainly applies here. Having a lottery is completely ridiculous unless it is done at the beginning, not after some people got shut out and are whining about it. It was made clear that it was limited from the start and that some people would not be getting one. You should have reserved sooner. Sorry but that is how it is. Where they really screwed up is when they allowed people to reserve more than one copy or order more than they reserved. To be fair, second copies should be music only copies. I still dont understand why it was limited to begin with. They should never do that again and I don't blame the people who are jumping off the bus at this point. This was handled very poorly and they should make more boxes to make this right for all the fans who have supported them throughout the years. What would be the big deal if they did? Plus it would screw the ebay scum. That would be the best part.

Just looking thru all the comments here, someone* has put all the songs played and number of times. I noticed that Mr. Charlie & Playing In The Band appear 22 time each, that is every show.Perhaps the full name of this mega-box should be, "Playing In The Band: Europe '72 - The Complete Recordings " Because Mr. Charlie just doesn't make too much sense. Is it September yet?

....one of the silver linings for me in the extreme disappointment was being able to connect with others having the same problems without lashing out or descending into negativity. After accepting my lot, I come back to find the tone has changed dramatically. I still can't get a response for even the music-only set, despite multiple attempts to reserve, yet I won't participate in what is happening here. Hope to come back in Sept and have some positive, upbeat discussions about how great the music is. BTW, a few years back the Traveling Wilburys released a "limited edition" box set. For legal reasons, they could not produce more of the same set when it sold out, so they released the exact same thing with a blue case instead of a white one. Just sayin. :)

I tried to order one set on Thursday. Did not happen, could not get through. I have tried to reserve one set about twenty times, starting on Friday, about 4 times a day, using two different addresses. I NEVER received a reply within 24 or 48 hours. Although I'm sad, I've resigned myself to teh fact that I will not get the box set. Obviously, I want all the music. It may be unlimited (for now?), but since there's still an option to make a reservation, I would like to see my reservation get through...

I submitted my email address on the 19th and twice on the 20th and I have never received a thing. I wonder if all the orders received with billing information were processed prior to people who submitted their email addresses even if they were received afterward. The order page was up initially and after it crashed it was replaced with a page collecting email addresses, then the order page was back up, then the email address page was up again. Were these honored via timestamp? or were all orders with credit card information processed first...

I check Dead.net every day. I must have looked too late on Thursday because I didn't see this offer until Friday when the cart had already crashed. I was able to enter my email address to let me know when I could order. Instead, I got an email to take a reservation (still ealry on Friday). I entered the information, including full name for personalization. Later (Friday evening) I got a confirmation for my request for (1) set, and it said I would soon get another email with next steps to place my order . I have never recieved anything since then. Nothing. Nada. I have sent numerous emails to drrhino@rhino.com, and made numerous calls to customer service. No one can tell me anything. So frustrated with this this whole thing. The whole limited edition thing leaves a very very bad tase, even if everything hadn't gone totally fubar.

I get your point dude, but the fact is, many people like me were on the site immediately after the announcement but the servers (or whatever) couldn't handle the traffic. I kept getting error msgs and the note from Dead.net said try again they are working on it. Well, I tried for hours and couldn't get in. Then I was away over the weekend and couldn't try again until Monday and the game was over. Just sayin that snooze and lose make sense for those that DID snooze, but many of us were shut out in spite of our attempts.

Correction. In my last post I stated that I set my first request on Friday. It was Thursday, the 20th. I got the confirmation on Friday the 21st. I can't believe that 7,200 sold out before I got my confirmation on Friday, let alone before I placed the 'request' on Thursday.

Get this -- I placed my reservation on Friday afternoon and had heard absolutely nothing from Dead.net -- until two minutes ago, where my reservation for a personalized copy was confirmed. Go figure. Now, I guess it's just a question of whether the reservation will be honored. In the meantime, the many other people who were in the same boat as me should chill a little & check their email!!

...a big thank you for Marye is in order for keeping this bus on the road. I have no idea where we would be without you :) You are always looking our for us. I think by the time this is all said and done, there will be more than 7,200 sets shipped. All the confirmed orders will obvioulsy be honored. I also think anyone with a valid code will get his/her set. Since you can order multiple sets, that 7,200 is now a baseline. I can't wait until September when this becomes "what do you mean my set won't ship because my debit card does not have the funds? what do you mean my credit card is maxed out?" This is one circus I won't miss! I think a listening party is in order here in PA once the set arrives. A different show every week for 22 weeks. That will take us to spring. Not a bad way to spend quality time with fellow heads :)

I just got my code to order my copy, and it even asked for personalization information. It took my card info, and send a confirmation email. I don't know if it just took real real long, or if it is due to my emails to CS and drrhino, or all my calls that finally got me the code email. I almost feel guilty now for getting one. I hope this works out, and I hope that in the future they will never do another limited edition thing again. There is no reason, except to do "I got one and you didnt!!!". What else is the point of a limited edition. If the reason is because they include actual memorabilia that has a limited quantity, I think they should not bother with that, or sell them completely separately from music releases. If we all ask them for NO MORE LIMITED EDITIONS maybe they will listen. I gotta think that about 99% of deadheads would agree this (?????????) as opposed to things like the Whole Show versus Cherry Picked road trips debates. The only reason to want a limited edition is so that you can have something that someone else doesn't. WTF? Hoping that this somehow works out for everybody.

We share this wonderful bond with each other that outsiders don't understand. Its called the Grateful Dead and I am proud to be a part of this community. I don't care if my boz is number one or number10000000. I just want everone who wants one to get one and Im sure the band would as well. Yay. I feel that the mood is about to swing

Well I also just finally got my code and was successfully able to order one copy. I reserved Friday night immediately after the E-Mail came in and then again Sat morning (after the server problem annoucement). Also, the E-Mail containing my code said that if I ordered more than my allotment (which was one) the additional copies would be deleted. This is good news for those waiting still. Last Friday a few moments after receiving the Dead.net announcement about the box in my Inbox, I want to the website to reserve a "personalized" copy. Like a few others here, I only just received an email a few moments ago confirming ... something. How about THIS for an idea, to compensate the "Music Only" orders: THEY should receive a "bonus show" CD set of the April 4, 1972 Winterland show, not available to box set buyers or to anyone who orders the "Music Only" set after February 28, 2011. This would be a logical add-on, since that show was the last one before the band headed out to Europe, with the first Europe show taking place a mere 3 days later. This would also have the added impact of lowering the resale value of the boxed sets and really pissing off the resellers. Nah. Never happen.

From a purely business aspect, I understand making limited editions of products because this generates sales 1000X faster than just releasing a product. I'm positive that if TPTB had NOT announced that this was limited to 7200 boxes, thay NEVER would have sold that amount in the time period they did, the initial sales of this would have been very low and would have taken MUCH longer to realize 7200 units sold. How many would have purchased this within the 1st week of sale if this was not limited? I know I would have waited until I could have gotten this cheaper elsewhere or much later when I had the money to burn.

boxes will be #'d yeah (I think) I got mine but it is awesome they can sell something like this for the price it is way cool that you can still get 'the music' less the extras for the same price I guarantee that acquiring each (official) show separately will set you back more than the $21 per. If you got the box - congratulations otherwise be content that you can still get the 22 shows less the fancy book and chest. If Rhino wanted to be greedy - I think they would have done it in a reverse fashion sell these shows at $25-$30 each then offer the bundle at a discounted price then come up with a boxed set with all the bells and whistles. -zep.

Wish there'd been a tape recorder running at all the meetings that must have been going on in Deadopolis and the Rhinoverse these last several days. Now there's a bonus disc! Good job with the ongoing "save". Now knock about a hundred bucks off the "music only" option and you'll gain even more forgiveness and probably move more units next Christmas. You know you'll still be making a decent return ;)

btw is Betty Cantor-Jackson receiving any royalties for her role in setting up for and arranging the 16-track tapes this series depends on? As is known, she was not treated graciously in the 80's and was refused payment for her work on Reckonings and other outlays, losing her house and the famous Betty Boards in the process. If she hasn't received some special financial thanks for her work that has already given us not only Europe 72 but 100 Year Hall and Rocking the Rhine she will get some monetary recognition from this series, not to take anything away from the post-recording labors of the production staff.

i let a person take my personal code and use it to by themselves the box set. after that they ordered and shipped to me dp 4 ; dp 36 and the fillmore 69 3 cd box set....ha!

How About 2 versions of the box set in all its glory (the music only one at the same price just doesn't cut it for me). Bozos and the Bolos. You could do 7200 of each. Just a thought, i don't think any one would complain about that.

A little history On January 25th, 2011 dstache said: If you are interested in a good laugh, here is a post from Blair Jackson from Jan 19 (see page 10) re: someone's concern that this would sell out before they were able to replace their missing credit card (or something like that): "Don't worry... On January 19th, 2011 blairj said: ... It's not going to sell-out in ten days. Sorry about your experience, ironman, but I think you'll be OK.... Honest... Now, everyone take a deep breath..... innnnnnnnnn..... ouuuuuuuuut! Good. All will be resolved in due time." Yeah, so that was Blair Jackson replying to my email. I found out about the Europe 72 release just minutes after getting my Visa card cancelled by my bank because a couple of fraudulent transactions had been charged to it that very morning. The fact that the web site crashed and the whole ordering process was suspended in favour of the email reservation system was an absolute godsend to me. I received the reservation email and then, in due course, my unique code. A replacement Visa card arrived in the mail on Monday (we have an incredibly efficient banking system in Australia!) and I successfully placed my order that evening. By then I didn't even blink at the $85 shipping charge. So, all in all, I count myself lucky. I was momentarily reassured by Blair's email at the time but also very mindful that the way that the Fillmore set had sold out leaving so many unfulfilled orders and so many bitterly disappointed Deadheads meant that not too many would be procrastinating about this one in the same way that they might have with the Fillmore box (which, from memory, took at least 3 weeks to sell out). For a bunch of supposedly mellowed out laid back hippies, these guys sure know how to generate a whole world of stress. 10,000 copies of Fillmore was nowhere near enough. I thought that there was an acknowledgement of that at the time and an indication that next time they'd be better prepared for demand. But no, they produce even fewer copies. Man, I'm a CPA and I can understand why you would specify a minimum order number to get this thing off the ground but I think it's totally nuts to stick to an arbitrary maximum when you have so grossly underestimated demand and are still in pre-production phase. I would have thought that going into production with a known and guaranteed sales figure and without having to carry surplus stock at the end of it would be a manufacturers dream. I want my copy of this and, so long as I have a copy, I couldn't care less how many other people have it. I don't see how people can get off on fetishing over the "exclusivity" of having this. At the end of the day 7200 ain't THAT exclusive, so does it really matter if it's 7200 or 72,000. Hey, even if there were 72,000 copies of this out there, I could almost guarantee that I would be the only kid on my particular block that had one and no one else on my block would even give a rats arse and, I'm only too sure that my wife (in whose opinion I don't need another single CD yet alone another 60 Grateful Dead CDs) would rather I just shove it up my own. my comment is: $450 IS TOO MUCH FREAKIN' MONEY. HOLY SHEESH. R U NUTZ? Release the shows piecemeal for those of us who have kids to put through college. In this day and age you can get CDs of shows right after they are played. certainly you can take orders for individual shows, or groups of shows, or whatever. Whether I like it or not, I am "Grateful For Life". I am not grateful enough to spend $450 on a release, though. $450 is 18 Road Trips. I'll give you $40 for 5/11/72!!!!!!!!!!

Mine started out, Dear Dead Head, Because you have reserved a copy (copies), you can now order your personalized edition(s) of Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings! Not sure how it worked out; I too was at first unable to place an order, and later entered my e-mail for notification. Got the e-mail Sunday late afternoon PST and placed my order within a half hour, got the confirmation within the hour. Just ordered one, for myself -- I too was pretty shocked by the ebay asking prices (all "Buy It Now", and the couple I looked at wanted the money in front!), hope the would-be buyers in that realm don't get burned . . .

I've been reading this forum for several days and it certainly convinces me the dead scene of old is lost and gone forever.I remember a time when just mentioning selling tapes was greeted with serious condemnation...it just wasn't done and now we have this...............? I miss the days of trading tapes and sometimes actually having to wait to get that hot copy of whatever show. Checkin the mail to see if your kind trader friend had come thru yet. I still have a tape deck in my system and it seems that when I do throw on an old tape its always a cosmic listening session. Its almost too easy to get the music these days,but like Jerry use to say "when we're done with it,its theirs" I'm just not sure who "they" are anymore. I hope everyone is happy come September. Dilbert asks "How many would have purchased this within the 1st week of sale if this was not limited?" The minor debacle created by Those In Charge was not necessarily an issue of "limited" versus "not limited". Nearly all reasonable people understand that "limited offers" require diligent action, lest one be caught empty-handed. What has created so much angst is that the offer in question was "absurdly limited". It's very likely that Those In Charge underestimated the number of people who would be interested in this box but I don't believe it is at all unfair to question the reasonableness of their judgment in that regard. And in general I believe that selling music like this as a "mail order only" item is ridiculous. There are a lot of people who would be extremely interested in this or many of the other "limited" releases that do not have the time to check their email every ten hours or, in the case of the exclusive discs offered to "subscribers", do not have the money to purchase all the releases they have no interest in. In short, "from a purely business standpoint," I believe this project could have been made available to thousands of more people (tens of thousands is more like it) without alienating fans and/or potential customers and without instantly creating the ill skumBay aftermarket (premarket in this case!). There would be no loss of money and, if information about the "exclusive" sale was properly disseminated, as much or more personal information from new registrants could be collected as was collected using the most recently effected "strategy". In addition, by allowing the set to be sold in local and/or privately-owned record stores, the Dead could be doing their own little bit to prevent such places from going out of business. Forgive me: I'm thinking like a dirty fxcking hippie again.

I think it really shows the value of the archived recordings if so many people are willing to spend so much money on a box set of music that already exists. This is a goldmine! All that needs doing is remixing and packaging. The hardest part is already done! The fact that the band recorded everything is really unique and special and I wonder if they ever thought the recordings would be so valuable back in the 60s or 70s or even 80s. They probably used the recordings to get better musically but in the 80s and 90s I don't know. Maybe just force of habit. A whole bunch of wages/salaries can come from these recordings, a legacy to the families of the band. It is still amazing to me that so many people would buy these releases when the music is already out there unless its an investment to sell later.
