Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Emmy
Seeing as Emmy is for TV, um, no. But a Grammy would have been nice. Seriously, what limited edition package or box set could beat this? There's been a lot of griping, but I love toting my steamer trunk around the house by the handle. Feels like I'm going on a trip, and I am! In fact, I think I'll grab that thing right now and delve into Show #20 (the second of four Lyceum shows). It has taken me since September to reach this point on the tour. Maybe I have been savoring the box a little. Each show has so many moments of sublime musical goodness that I don't want to rush it. I'm still burned about the audio quality of the first 10 shows, but that doesn't mean I won't return to those over and over again.

    No Emmy nomination?
Not surprised. That music is 40 years old. Isn't the Emmy supposed to be for new music? I don't know. The GD is such a niche market that not gaining popular acclaim is hardly surprising. Digipaks for the masses.

I am one of the few who received an order confirmation last week that started with DN. The e-mail arrived after I signed up to reserve a copy and get the special code. I called customer service and was told if it starts with DN, I'm in. So once I got the code I signed up for, I ordered one set for my son (birthday and Christmas gift). After reading through the posts yesterday, I checked with marye (Thanks Mary!) and she told me I should have the two sets. After reading a few posts today, I called customer service and spoke to Manny. He said the DN code was not an order confirmation code, but a code to confirm the next code. He also said I only have one order (which would be the one personalized for my son). If you received an order confirmation that begins with DN, PLEASE make sure you really have an order before you ignore the special code or give it away. It seems like there is still confusion surrounding this issue.

that the music only version is unlimited? Since it's too late to sell my fridge to get the limited edition box, can I just wait until September to by a standard version so I won't have a $450 whole in my account for the next 9 months?

Dstache was saying something similar yesterday a few people were pretty happy to believe they had that order in the first 24 hours but still covered themselves by getting a code It sounds like the code is the real deal and an order # needs to end with J322 and not start with DN is that what I'm to understand?

I had a DN confirmation email as well, then was told it was no good and to use my reservation confirmation code to order. I think if you are relying on a confirmation email that was received in response to an order placed during the first 2 or 3 days of the promotion, you should call customer service and get it confirmed.

Customer service told me via email that my DN number was just confirmation of my reservation and that I should use my code. As soon as I used my code I was able to confirm my order using the Order Status button on the top of the page.

Marye, you are far too kind to this community. I am also one that got the order put through in the first few days and got a confirmation number that began with DN. I printed out the confirmation screen and I did see the authorization on my debit card for $450. On friday, I got a confirmation email for my original order with the DN confirmation code. I also hedged my bet by emailing for a code. I did get my code over the weekend, and I also got a confirmation email sent for my order with the DN confirmation number. I decided to give away my code since my initial order went through. But before I gave the code away, I decided to quadruple check and make sure my intitial order went through. I have talked to 4 different people in phone support in regards to my DN confirmation number, 3 of them said the DN order was 100% good, especially since my cc got hit with the authorization. The 4th person said that they cannot see the DN authorization coded orders, since it was put through a different shopping cart. I told this rep what the others had told me over the previous days, and he said I was actually updating him and that if my card was authorized than the order went through. If all of you remember, when they came back and asked for people to email for a reservation, the website stated that if you had an order go through and got an authorization code, you were good to go. So to do my one last final check, I sent a message to Marye to get final confirmation. She did check and got confirmation that my order was good...from one of the Rhino VP's. After hearing that, I went ahead and gifted my code to a fellow head. Do not take phone customer service as the last word on everything. They only have bits and pieces of all of the information. All of the DN coded orders went through a different shopping cart than what all of the regular orders go through. This is one of the big reasons why this whole process got shut down in the first two days. Since it went through this other cart, phone customer support cannot pull it up on their system, and you will not see it if you go into your account on dead.net, or if you hit the check order status, you will not get an email. This does not mean the order is not good. I will go with what Marye got told from the Rhino VP until told differently. If it turns out that everything I was told was wrong and my order did not really go through, well...I will be disappointed as I would have liked the book and box (don't really give a crap about the nametag), and it will be disappointing that I gave away the book and box by trying to do the right thing, but in the end, I'll just order a music only version, and will still be just as happy in the long run, because all I really care about are those 22 remastered gems of shows. Hope this information will help put the minds of those who have DN coded orders at ease. It looks like we are all good. Worse case scenario: you still end up with the #1 most important thing: the music.

Ends with Q322. I was looking at some other past orders and they all ended with 322 but the letter before it was always different. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

My CC doesn't show any activity. Plus it just hit me that it expires next month, when they go to really charge the card it will have a different expiration. I would assume this kind of thing is taken into account. Looks like a call to CS ... just missed them for the night too.. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

all the legal stuff was going down with Rhino acquiring The Vault, DP 36 was suddenly it for the Dick's Picks series. We had to wait a very long time for a new release. The monthly download series was suddenly cut off. Everything dried up for a while. Jerry's Vault is still tied up, his website has been down for years. Now, we have a pile of stuff coming our way. Just had the 30 Days of Dead, for free. David post a nice Tapers Section weekly, and now we have jam of the week. 5 RT releases guaranteed for sure this year. I personally have really enjoyed the RT series and have collected all. We have a pile of music in front of us daily. I'm very grateful to all that make it possible. Sometimes we all get caught up in what we don't have, that we lose site of what we do have. I would hope that everyone that wants a copy E72 would be able to get one. Seems like that is not the case. I agree, they way underestimated the demand for this one. Now, I'm reading about law suits and people complaining that their credit cards were charged after they gave up the information. All card companies have different rules, remember the three pages of small print on the user agreement that none of us ever read. I remember when the FW 69 box was coming out, the band stated they wanted to put out something for collectors, they did. I paid 72 bucks for mine, and see it on Ebay for 1000.00. This is America, I fully expect to see a lot of E72 boxes on Ebay in November. I saw where a View From The Vault II CD set was going for 168 bucks a while back, it is out of print. Many releases will be out of print in the future, so get it while you can. Been jamming my Europe 72 CDs all week, really looking forward to my copy arriving. Hope the bad vibes fade away this week and we all can get back to simple living and enjoying our freedom. Coconut Phil, living Free.

I missed out on the big bells and whistle set, but I still have hope that a few will slip through and trickle down to me, as I reserved a music only set. I have a lot of stuff to rock as is, but this set is "the one"! Hopefully I get a code for the full, glorious all in set, but if not I can rock every last second of one of the greatest tours of all time. September can't get here soon enough!!

I know I look like a new member but I had to join again since my old account would not let me log in (the system would NOT send me a new password saying it did not know my email address but yet I was blocked from creating an account because that same address was already registered - trippy, but it sounds like the site has been hammered lately). Anywho, since I just committed to spending $450 on something, I wanted to confirm that accepted orders (with payment and confirmation emails) as of this date are for the boxed set. Nowhere in my email with registration code did it say anything about "MUSIC ONLY" but after I paid I saw this new version was released. It would be great if somewhere on my order it said "box set" or if the music only version was $449 or something. Peace.

Thanks all for your input regarding the DN number. I have my fingers crossed! I never saw any activity, or hold, on my credit card. Not even with the order that I know for sure went through. It may depend on your bank or credit card company, or even debit card vs. credit card. Now the long wait until September begins. I can't wait!

Lost Boy maybe if you read the posts here slowly you'll understand. You said that some people have an advantage since they work at a computer and can move on something offered faster. I made the point that that was not the case with me I just check the site every couple of days. I got my reservation in on the 2nd day. I also pointed out they said it sold out in FOUR days. so if you me you didn't get a chance because it's a ltd. edition too bad. Otherwise there ain't nothing obvious about it. But I think I know the real problem using terms like pseudo Zen and putting qoutation marks around "we" I like Garth am unworthy Oh well I'll get over it. And if you think I'm the only one telling the whiners to chill out you haven't read many of the posts. Final point as I said in my 1st post this whole thing relates well to my name snafu if you don't know what that means ask someone in the service........Jesus it's only cd's and you can still buy them get a life

Just to let those know who are not seeing the authorization that went with your order, it will depend on the type card you used. I used the debit card for mine, and being linked to my checking account, I can see all of the activity that has happened (pending charges, actual charges, cleared checks, etc.). So that is the reason that I saw the authorization from dead.net. The authorization showed up on Thursday, right after my order went through, and came off yesterday. If you used a regular credit card (not one associated with a bank account), they usually do not list pending charges or authorizations. They will only list charges that have gone completely through the transaction process. Where you will be able to see if an authorization occurred is in you available balance. If that is $450 less than the current balance, you know the authorization hit the account. If you want check beyond that, your credit card customer service will be able to tell you of any pending charges.

Regarding order numbers that start with "DN", I was told by customer service that they are 100% legit. I understand that customer service isn't always the best source for quality info, but my credit card was charged. In addition (and with a grain of salt) I also was told that DN numbered confirmation codes are in-line for very low "numbered" box sets of the 3000 being made. This would make sense considering I get in on that first night when the order process opened up for awhile. For what it's worth for all you DN confirmation people. ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.

First of all, I had the same problem having to join again because the system would not log me in on my old account or send me a new password. Weird. Marye stated in the thread that all the emails going out right now with purchase codes are for the box set. If you ordered by sometime Saturday afternoon this is what you should be getting. Hope this helps.

Sigh. I first saw the ad at the end of what looked like the first day (happened to check the site). I slept on it, reserved a copy next day, got a confirmation quite a few hours later for a personalized copy, then a promise of the secret code the day after that. And as promised, within another day still, I got the code. Noting you could only use the code once, I logged in and after deleting my name in favor of something more appropo, I was waffling between Mojo Hand, Mr. Charlie, Gently Jack Jones, and Tennessee Jed. But by then I was just too bummed out by how ugly this whole thing had turned and I X'd out of my session, rendering the code obsolete and taking myself out of a privileged position. Nothing against Rhino or Dead.net or the Dead, or the "powers" ~ it was truly the bile from the Head community. I haven't had the stomach to even look at this thread since it was around 60 pages long, and glancing through a few there are some encouraging posts. But mostly it's just amazingly selfish and impatient. With my newly freed funds, think I'll order the '88 Road Trips and be satisfied (saw the Hampton stand, the first two shows were exactly perfect, so looking forward to hearing this). Might do the subscription at most. If I ever reconsider Europe '72, the music-only is still a steal (though not nearly the same investment ~ ha, as if I'd ever have sold my box unless I was defaulting on my house). Speaking of defaults ~ sorry, Dead.net & Blair & David & co. ~ if this is considered "defaulting" on my reservation, PLEASE feel free to resend me a code and I'll keep my word. My decision wasn't driven by the cost, just the feeling ~ one of excitement replaced, unfortunately, by bad vibes. See y'all around. God bless.

...but your reply needs clarification. You said: "If you ordered by sometime Saturday afternoon this is what you should be getting." I just "ordered/payed" right now. My email with registration code came last night. I "requested/reserved" a copy on the 21st but yesterday's email was the first contact. Once I saw it I bought immediately (of course) but then happened upon all this "MUSIC ONLY" and other craziness in this thread! :) Thanks for any furthur clarification.

I should have said if you reserved/requested instead of ordered. I too reserved/requested on the 21st and didn't get my email with registration code until yesterday afternoon. You'll be getting the box as I don't believe they've even started sending out codes for the just music orders yet.

Went ahead with ordering my "standard" box set. Since the URL ended with "personalization-page" I felt it fair to assume there was a "personalized box" waiting for me to order. Duhhh. Why would I assume anything here. Two Christmas's ago I thought it would be cool to get my brother a SYF blanket @ $250 after numerous trips online getting nowhere, and a very long conversation with India I found myself weeks later the proud owner of two blankets. Had not planned on buying myself a SYF blankie but WTF it is pretty cool. The box set is going to look pretty cool next to the Jerry Giants bobblyhead doll. Sick huh? Haven't really heard alot of the Europe tour even though this era is one of my faves. Looking forward to hearing Hundred Year Hall in its entirety. Why would I think a URL ending in "personalization-page" would take me somewhere that I would personalize something? Not that I expect anyone to answer that. Just wondering.... the bus came by and.....

In order for dead.net to make up for the aggravation caused to us in relation to the Europe 72 box set, in addition to the coffee table book and other memorabila, I suggest adding a DVD of the Copenhagen show which was video taped on April 17, 1972. That would make most of us very happy.

Ironman, bummin me out dude. I always thought my brother invented that word! Here is another to have in your pocket. What word comes after igloo in your dictionary? If it ain't ignaro it ain't a very good dictionary! Probably the wrong place to be discussing such things. Can we get in trouble? the bus came by, I was just too high

For me, if it wasn't important, if I didn't care, if it didn't mean something I wouldn't have gotten all excited, jacked up etc. If the offer had been from the git go the stripped down version with orders taken for six months or three months or whatever I would have been just as excited and would have been throwing my coins down. Trouble is I was offered power steering, power windows, groovy wheels, tucked and rolled upholstery, a bose sound system, and then told Santa Claus died before he got to my house. Yes I had an emotional high and then felt gut punched. I can totally relate with the "whiners and complainers" (that's a Spiro Agnew by the way, not original here). It would be interesting someday to hear the blow by blow from the inside as to how all this went down. I still don't think it's equitable for the over 7200 to be paying the same $450. But again it would be interesting to hear someday the facts from inside. Has anyone here ever read Spiro's book on humor? To the whiners and complainers, I embrace you! I'm not allowed to whine and complain at home. Anyway, I could be and probably am wrong. :-)

agree totally - it's all still a work of art in progress. As with legitimate limited edition printmaking, just do a second run and call it a second run, and maybe change the pricing slightly, and ... problem solved. Thanks and keep it positive like we can.

I finally got my e-mail response sent to me at 5:43 P. M., PST, on Wed., 1/25/2011, after clicking in my order request at approximately 10:00 A. M., PST, on Saturday, 1/22/2011. I'm on the stand-by list for a box, with a guarantee of availability for the Music Only set if there are not enough box reservations freed up to move me up in line. I figure that means that my chances are at least fair, which is good enough for me. As long as I don't find out that people requested box sets at noon PST and got their orders confirmed without having to go to stand-by, I'm cool with it. Yeah, I want the doo-dads and the carry case, and there's no way I'd sell it before I'm put out to pasture, but it really is the music that I want, in the long run. So now I'm resigned to being patient and waiting for the next couple of weeks while the orders get processed, and while confirmation codes either do or do not get used. Honestly, I don't want to jump the line and get a miracle from another Head on this--I just want the box IF I move up in line through attrition. If I'd gone online either Thursday or Friday night (I always visit this site when I go online at home), I'd have found out in plenty of time to place an order, maybe even early enough to get a personalized set (although, for the life of me, I can't really bring myself to care about that particular "bonus"--a box is a box, and there's no quality difference in digital pressings between the first and the 7,200th CD, as compared to a vinyl record, in which the original record stampers degrade, ever so slightly, with each impression made). Let the chips fall where they may. I will, however, continue to despise those individuals who ordered either single or multiple copies for the sole purpose of reselling at a fat eBay profit, or who ordered auctionable extras to pay for their own "keeper." I also have no real pity for any of their $900+ customers, should those orders end up not being filled (credit card declined in September when payment is actually due, more units auctioned than were actually purchased for resale, completely fraudulent auctions, etc.), since the eBay listings are all flagrant violations of eBay listings requirements (you cannot knowingly list anything for sale that you will not receive from your supplier within 30 days of the end of the auction). The sad thing for those auction buyers is that they are not going to be covered by any purchase protection, since they won't find out that they threw away their money until after it's too late to file a claim either with eBay, PayPal, or their own bank or credit card company. Please understand that I would harbor no grudge against anyone purchasing multiples for later sale if the sole limit on the set's production had been the total number of units ordered by a specific pre-announced date (as was the case, for example, with the RT albums or Winterland boxes back when there was a bonus disc with every order placed by the shipping date--we always had close to a month to make our orders, so anybody who missed the boat could only blame themselves). Those multiple orders never deprived anyone of the basic set, and the more people got multiples, the more chances there were that late purchasers could obtain a bonus disc beyond the cutoff date. With a limited production set, however, there is no benefit to the community from buyers who seek to profit from resales. It's interesting to note that NONE of the eBay listings seems to have bothered mentioning that there are "Music Only" sets available to anyone who comes here to reserve one before production commences. There will probably be some P. O.'d auction buyers when they find out about THAT!

I didn't hear anything yesterday, maybe I will find out today where I stand. In the meantime, I have been watching 4/17/72 with astonishment. What an incredible band. "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand."

I missed out on the box set by a few hours because I didn't know about it.If anyone has a spare code and wants to pass it on to a british deadhead of 1972 vintage my email address is johnw.christian@virginmedia.com. I know I'd probably just put the box on a shelf and listen to the music but it would be nice to have the box contents. :-)

FWIW, I have a debit card in France, and there's nothing debited against it.

Ouch! Jackstraw, definitely it out. I've run into that little gem before with things that get automatically billed to my cc, and the transaction has always gotten turned down once the expiration date hits....making it necessary to re-register the card with the vendor. Since you've got a legitimate order on a legitimate credit card, seems like the transfer to your new card shouldn't be a big deal, but I'd be proactive about it. And I'd probably wait until some of the dust settles on this ordering tsunami at Rhino so that you know you've got customer service's full attention.

Has anyone had one of these? Whilst I have the printed screen receipt for my order for the full box set, I am yet to receive a conformation email. Anyone else got one? Should we expect one? Marye - can you advise on this?
