Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Your forgiven...actually some of the cassette tapes sound pretty good when cds came out, something with a sweet sound, but when dicks picks started really coming and road trips i kind of didn't go to those anymore...but they weren't bad and i kind of miss those days trading and talking to people via real mail and e-mails...now it's so easy to get a show if you really want one and the semi-offical releases make it hard too...when europe 72 comes out i know i'll be busy for a long long time...without trying to be a good soldier or fan europe 72 has to be their best period for song content and it being the full band's last hurrah...although they continued to be really amazing through 1981 or so...beyond that they were still great but in my opinion 1969-1973 being the tip of the iceberg with 1974-1981 still pretty good but not good as the other period...1982-1995 what can i say there were alot of great songs covered, not to mention alot of great covers spread out throughout, not to be dismissed by any means...even their last show (i think) at soldiers field has "so many roads" that's a song not to be missed...so we all know how good they were as a band of many types of music...eg AC/DC was considered a great rock band but they didn't play a huge variety of types of music.

I too had a code that became unusable after a glitch on the first day. I was told by custserv that a new one would be generated to replace the old one, but I've not heard anything yet. Any other word for those of us still waiting?

You people are stupid. "Oh music should be free, you're not a real deadhead if you're willing to make money off people that want the music". If someone wants to buy my set after I burn all the music for double what I paid, I'll do it (unless the box set is too cool to let go, highly doubt that). Guess what, I'll still enjoy the music just as much as you. I don't care about politics or the band's philosophy. I enjoy the music more than any other band plain and simple. If it's "all about the music" download off one of the million torrents that will have these.

UK debit card here, no charges on it. I had intended to use my credit card, for obvious reasons, however that expires at the end of April. I emailed Customer Services to ask whether it would be OK to flip the cards when I receive the new Credit card, but have not yet received an answer; I guess they are swamped with queries re the order, so I'm happy to wait on that. Means the difference between living on lentils and organic lentils for the last few months of the year... :-))

Here is a post from audioasylum yesterday from a frequent poster who is selling his photos for use in this set. Interesting stuff: who is doing this and has done releases for the Dead since 1999...told me yesterday that they were totally taken by surprise by the quickness that this sold out. I have a confirmed personalized set coming, but there was confusion for some I was told. I experienced none of it, possibly because I heard about it first from England and by the time I heard and got to Dead Net the problem may have been solved. David has worked on this project for 14 months, he told me that the band was thrilled to be laying down such a wonderful legacy edition for the fans. The band is adamant that the Euro Tour was the best tours they ever were on, as a person who was there for some of it, I will agree that this is all going to be good. When we talked he said as soon as Rhino send him my email about the pix I have he said he recognized my name from the previous shots I have on Euro 72. He and the staff thought they had all the pix they needed, then he saw what I emailed him and he said now he has to go back to Rhino and get additional funds for what ever pix they want to buy. He also said I will be in the loop for any other releases in the future in which the time frame is the same for the pix. There will be over 900 pix in the Euro Box. They are trying to get the rights to the Videos shot in Copenhagen and I think Brussels for a DVD to be included in the box. They have the master soundboard recording for these. I am sorry you were involved in whatever the problems were, I hope you are able to get the Euro Box in the full edition...

JeremyP - well, my experience was exactly opposite yours - when ordering the box set, after entering personalization, shipping, etc., the screen went to 'processing'….and froze - it did not go on to the confirmation page. Afraid I would fry my code or lose my place in line, I did not 'refresh', or log out - that was sunday night, and I have not used my pc since, leaving the page open with the icon spinning – trying to keep my daughter from using the pc and my cats from walking on the keyboard. However, I did get a confirmation email - but it did not specify it was for the box set. My Account page says "pending", and does not specify Box Set. And, my order page is still on the spinning icon – 4 days later. I know it’s probably ok, but I need written confirmation. I am trying to resolve with Cust Serv, but no resolution yet - I understand they are slammed, and am sure they are doing everything they can to work thorough this, but I also know that if we don't answer these questions now, any issues occurring in Sept will leave us SOL if we don't have documentation. So, I'm patiently waiting on that resolution. I’ve had a lot of commerce through dead.net, and for the few issues experienced, Cust Serv was always understanding and empathetic, so I am confident we’ll experience the same now. I PM'd Marye as well, & she's graciously looking into it as well.

Hey now, talked with John in CS. He suggested calling them back and updating once the new credit card is issued a new expiration. The card will not be charged until September but it would be good to have all the payment info updated long before then. I asked if he could just charge the card now but they cannot due to a bunch of reasons that I don't feel like typing out. Any way hope this helps as undoubtedly others are in the same boat. Thanks dead.net for sorting this out. "It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"

Order went through just fine which is why I feel sanguine that I am in on the deal. Somewhat concerned that I haven't had a confirmation email, but Marye has kindly offered to chase that up for me. If the order HASN'T gone through, then this is another cock-up over and above the original system overload chaos. Fingers crossed. As I said to Marye, I've been waiting since 4.7.72 to hear a clean copy of 4.7.72!

yes in theory, but the trouble is that the early orders before the total meltdown (those beginning with DN) were as I understand processed using a different shopping cart. In fact I had to create an entirely new account at the time as the shop did not recognise my normal email and password. The 'Check my order' button is I think linked just to the regular (old) shopping cart. So when I enter the email I used to buy the new Box Set I am told I have no orders and my heart rate doubles and I reach for my meds, but apparently I do have a confirmed order registered in the parallel universe created on January 18. Does that make sense. Probably not. Oh what a tangled web! I am beyond all normal emotions about this and just giggle inanely and mutter through gritted teeth 'Nothing left to do but smile smile smile'

Yes, I was told by customer service that the DN order numbers cannot be checked on the site. I had one, and cancelled it, as I was able to place a "regular" order via the reservation email. I wanted to be able to make sure that I could check it 187 times between now and September. :-)

Does everyone realize that GD/Rhino could still fix this colossal mess they've made? It's called "putting your fan base first" -- yes, those people who've stuck with you for 40 years. They could create a Reprint Issue of the complete box -- to make it different from the first run, leave out the map of Europe. This whole problem comes from the reissue staff not having the right marketing concept and having no clue of the size of the fan base. You, Reissue Staff, are the reason so many thousands of fans are now alienated and resentful. In an ordinary business, that would be sufficient reason to lose your job. Do the right thing. MAKE A SECOND RUN OF BOXES. Leave out the map. It is crazy and unacceptable for the box set of the band's best tour, complete with all the archival work and illustrators' art, to be out on the market for only 4 days. You, Reissue Staff, are not serving the band or the fans with your rigid business model. PUT THE FANS FIRST. Have some more "lengthy discussions" and this time have better ideas and open minds and a real appreciation for your fans. Pull down this stupid, ugly wall.

I figured maybe I can knock one thing off of Marye's plate. I also had a post on this from last night. Even though I checked many times before, I called customer service again today. It was confirmed, 100%, that the DN order numbers are GOOD. As was stated above, and as I said yesterday, dead.net is switching to a different shopping cart provider. For whatever reason, the first time the new cart was used was for the E72 box. Well..., probably not the best idea. Obviously, it was not ready, it crashed, hence the need to go back to the old shopping cart that ends with the jj... order numbers. On tales from the golden road on sunday, the rhino big wig said only about 300 orders got through before the cart completely blew up. Being the paranoid fool that I am, I have checked into this far too many times. This final chat with CS along with the info Marye gave me from a Rhino VP means those of us with DN#'s are 100% good to go. If you had a DN# and got a code and ordered again, you WILL be getting two boxes. So unless you need two, cancel one, so one of the lucky folks on the standby list will be able to pick it up. As far as being able to check the order online, the nice cs rep, also told me they are still going to be making the switch to the other cart provider sometime this spring or summer. When they do, all of the DN numbers will be fully visible by phone support and here on the web. So you may not see it now, but you will see it later. Most importantly, you will definitely see it in September:). On the credit card questions, I also posted last night on why some can see the authorization and some can't. It's probably about 5-6 pages back by now. For those worrying about the charge, they only put an authorization or a hold on the $450. Be aware, if you are using a debit card, it will put a hold, or a freeze on those funds for 3-5 days. You will not be able to get at that money for the 3-5 days that is on hold. Same thing goes with a regular CC, but at least it's not tying up your cash. Once the hold comes off, you will be able to get at your money. To repeat, it is only a hold, not a complete transaction where your money comes out of the account. Hope this helps, and may the four winds blow you safely through your Thursday.

I take it from some comments here that if you are a fan with all things Dead, but were unlucky enough to have been born in the last 35 years you don't deserve a box set. C'mon get real!! No one has a right just because they are older than someone else, how dumb are some of you guys! I shall now proceed to untangle the entire universe.

Today I got a private message from a guy offering to "bargain" with me for his code. Contrast that with yesterday when a true Deadhead GAVE me his spare code for nothing! In that transaction we both got to experiance that old miracle-ticket vibe. That's the stuff that made this community special through all those shows over all those years. So the statement in the email I received with my purchase code that said it was "exclusive to you" (meaning "me", I assumed) wasn't really true? Anyone had problems using codes obtained from someone else? Just curiosity on my part...used my code, made my purchase, trying hard not to worry about how long Sept is from now and trying not to wish my life away to get there.

I would love some ones extra code for sure. I have now been approached by 3 different people looking to " trade" their codes. Seriously??? All 3 have been for roughly $200. It really sucks that there are people out there who were lucky enough to get in on this, yet want to gouge us fan unlucky enough to have had to miss out on this awesome box set. Me and my friends used to buy extra tickets every now and then when we had extra cash just to miracle people in the lot every now and then, it was just the cool thing to do. If you are not going to use your code give it to someone or let it expire. I assume the expired codes will trickle down to the people that bought the music only box sets.

Cosmic Badger, my authorization email said the same thing. Marye posted (as of now, it's probably about 40-50 pages back), for those that got that message in their email to call in to CS and do their personalization. When I called in today to do that final confirmation of my order, I gave the CS rep my personalization, so that is now good to go. RainDead, glad to be of some help. There is just so much misinformation out there (mostly unintentional) it's luck wearing sun glasses on a really foggy night. When it comes to getting our hands on this great music, we're a jumpy bunch to begin with, and this process has truly been the most convoluted. It's nice just to have some concrete info. For those that are being approached to trade/buy codes. STAY YOUR GROUND! DON'T DO IT. Make these people put up when the code is getting ready to expire. The guess here is the vast majority will lose at this little game of chicken and bail on the order. Again, just my guess, but I believe there are going to be quite a few boxes back in the system when these codes expire early next month. As others have stated, they are already setting up a standby list for this situation. Also, on Tales from the Golden Road, the Rhino big wig said his idea on what to do with these boxes is to give them to people who signed up for the music only set. So, it looks like, true to his word, this is the route they are going. If I didn't get in on the box, I would most certainly sign up for the music only piece. Maybe you will get lucky and get a box, worse case you end up with 22 remastered shows of some the finest music ever produced. Can't get any more win/win than that!

In the time since this site announced the imminent arrival of the Europe '72 box set, I've done a lot of things, such as promising my wife I wouldn't purchase this box, going to work, paying bills, getting regular sleep, and reading the posts regarding the Europe '72 box set. I've recently come across some reasonable posts by kevjones, lamagonzo & antonjo. I feel as if I have a little more in common with those regular posters. I also pulled out a few books on the Dead and listened to some of my Europe tour CDs which have been officially released. There is some really excellent music on these records, and the history surrounding the tour is fascinating. The "Europe '72" 3-LP set mainly featured new tunes with studio overdubs, which could have been the LP "Rambling Rose," which never came to fruition. The band was at a transition, as Bob was taking leads which used to be Pig Pen's place in rotation; Donna had just joined the band the month before, and Keith was certainly hot! The Dead were pretty successful, making the cash and expanding their fan base. A working vacation was certainly deserved. The band took off on April 1 (the Day of Fools) and traveled in two separate buses when on the continent, dubbed the "Bolo" and "Bozo" buses. Willy Legate stated, "the subtle difference in character and import and atmosphere between the two omnibuses was so profoundly hidden and enigmatic that you could never possibly understand it." The Bozos (the band minus Phil) developed a philosophy of "Hypnocracy" which was more or less a response to a 1920's philosophy called Technocracy--developed by some scientists and engineers to draw up a new social order. There was precedent to Hypnocracy, as radio comedian F. Chase Taylor (in the guise of Col. Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle) developed Stoopocracy as a light-hearted response to Technocracy. Stoopnocrats invented things that do away with other inventions. Regarding the music--I went back and marveled at "Hundred Year Hall" and "Steppin' Out With the Grateful Dead." (which included music from dates highly rated by Blair Jackson in his book "Goin' Down the Road"). It made me jones for some of the other dates, such as 5/4 (L'Olympia Theater, Paris), 5/11 (Civic Hall, Rotterdam) and 5/18 (Kongressal Deutches Museum, Munich). The Dead were playing some similar sets, as they were the moving show, not the fan base, and there is a lot of repeated tunes on Europe '72 set lists. The discussion on this site seems to be mostly of Tchnocratic rants and lower consciousness levels--see Hank Harrison's "the Dead Book" for more on that. Mostly in the "Social Formal" and "Social Informal" levels. There is no ability to recharge spiritually in these levels. I send Stoopnocratic props to marye for working with the new order and technology to make sense of the new inventions and cooling down the rants. I figured out I collect the Grateful Dead for the sheer Hypnocracy of it all. There is joy and enlightenment in following the thread, finding little bits and pieces that build the story. This pursuit just may be as important as being offered the "Holy Grail"--at a price, of course. I figure this box set can't really be personalized or limited until we're offered our choice of a piece of the "game used" bat by Bob at the softball game in England, some of the yellow hair on Phil's (the Bolo deserter and Heineken enthosiast) Bozo mask from 4/17 (Tivoli), or some of the mud scraped from Declan McManus's (AKA "Elvis Costello") shoes worn at 5/7 (Bickershaw Festival). "In the sea of Hypnocracy the shore is just another wave."

The hold on my card has been lifted (praise Blues for Allah!)...and my personalization isn't exactly a name, it is a title...hope that it's not awkward on the box set. "Patrick's Pot of Gold's Complete 72 Box" or something ridiculous would surely dampen my mood. lol

Call these people out. Charging $200 for the code. What a crock of shit. That reminds me of when the tornado hit our little town a few years back, the dust had barely settled before the sleazy roofing contractors were there scamming and taking advantage of people, many of which were elderly. Feasting on other's misfortunes in my mind is one of the worst offenses towards humanity. You can only hope their karma comes back around full circle. ...so that if there is a "next time" things will work better. The reservation/waiting list is a perfectly good concept...if it works. Same with the access code, although implementing a limit and making the codes truly non-transferable would be a good thing. Use it yourself or it goes back into the waiting list pool, safest and most fair way to go. There's been scamming going on with this since the weekend.

for your excellent summary of the situation, to wit: 1. Yes, your DN orders are good. 2. Your credit/debit card providers have wildly different ways of dealing with this transaction, but many of them will put a hold on the funds for 3-5 days. This will result in havoc if the funds are not available on the account. Plan accordingly if this is likely to be an issue. 3. If your card is going to expire before September, let Customer Service know when you get the new one to avoid unpleasant surprises. 4. Re personalization issues, all will soon become more clear than it is!

On January 27th, 2011 JeremyP said:Has anyone had one of these? Whilst I have the printed screen receipt for my order for the full box set, I am yet to receive a conformation email. Anyone else got one? Should we expect one? JP, I got mine on Monday: Thank you for ordering from Dead.net. Your order is currently being processed, and you will receive an email confirmation as soon as your order leaves our warehouse.

I too have been approached about bartering other GD merchandise for a code. I could not even bring myself to respond. Should someone have a code that has become extra for whatever reason, I would be forever Grateful if it came my way. I will provide a loving and caring home for a box set that I could call my own :) Let me know via PM. Thanks and have a great day.Cheers!

I requested a copy the first day. Then I got an e-mail saying I was on stand-by. Maybe if they limited the order to one per customer, so many a$$holes wouldn't have ordered so many copies just to gouge folks on ebay. I'm sure Jerry would be proud....

3a: It would be very helpful if the new credit card had the same number as the old credit card.

I hope that after all of the folks who want the whole thing get it, they will start to sell the shows individually. I would like a couple here and there, but not the whole tour. Heresy, I know. ;-)

I have a comcast email and have tried about 20 times to get a passwordreset with no luck. I never get the email from dead.net (I checked spam). I get the newsletter and emails about orders, but never get the email when I try to reset the password. I started doing my orders without an account because of this. I got the email notice from the road trips sub, tried the first day and got errors. Then I got a DN confirmed order email and a reservation email with a code. So far customer service has not been able to confirm that my DN order number is actually valid (order numbers that the CS reps can't see?? what's up with that?). So I am sitting on the reserve code until someone can tell me that my DN order is actually valid. And am still unable to get to my "real" account here because I can't get password reset.

Can't help on your password, etc., but if you'd like to find out about the DN confirmed orders, there has been plenty posted by myself and followed up on by Marye on the last 4 or 5 pages. Good reading!

Perhaps we should post on every new page "Please read back 5-10 pages before posting any questions. It is VERY likely they have been answered already. Thank you.!" Might get tedious, but I can try :) ********************************** I am not young enough to know everything. Oscar Wilde

My experience with credit cards is that if a card reaches its expiry date, its replacement has the same 16-digit number but (obviously) a different, later expiry date and a different 3-digit CRC/validtion code. If a credit card is replaced due to suspected fraud etc. then the replacement card will have a new 16-digit card number as well. This is what happens with my MasterCard here in Holland. Different cards in different countries may be treated differently. If either of the aforementioned situations occur to you before September, I would strongly recommend contacting Customer Service a.s.a.p. to give them the new card details to avoid problems. Do not send any such information in an e-mail! Hope this is helpful.

My card expires end of August. Customer service says no problem, just call with new date and security code from the back when you get it. They will update on the spot.
