Dave's Picks Volume 28: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 6/17/76

This year's Dave's Picks series comes to a close just as the band's getting back together again in '76. By the time the Grateful Dead hit New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre - for the very first time - on 6/17/76, they were buzzing from their reunion, armed with new and revived material, the Rhythm Devils reformed with the mischievous Mickey Hart once again behind the kit. They'd skived off the unwieldy Wall of Sound and scaled back the venues from cavernous arenas to intimate theatres. Quite the treat!

During the first set, the Dead's playing was nuanced ("Cold Rain And Snow"), detailed ("Looks Like Rain"), and intricate ("The Music Never Stopped"); the singing struck softly ("Row Jimmy") and raised hairs ("Ship Of Fools"). But it’s the big barreling energy of the second set you’ll want to brace yourself for, replete with a disco'd "Dancing In The Streets," a low-down funky “Help”>”Slip”>”Franklin's” and a wind 'em up to wind down "Let It Grow">"Wharf Rat">"Around and Around." Can you keep up? There's only one way to find out.

This complete show, balanced out with a couple of bonus tracks from 6/23/76 and 6/28/76, was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 28 is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Grab a copy before they're gone, gone, gone.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

lol I tried to train my robot to access this site and it was so hard for him he shot himself last nite. Now I have a dead robot, a crappy new dead site and a big mess to clean up ( robots also lose control of all body functions when they die) I guess they were just tired of reading our comments, so they buried them, just like I had to do with my robot this am. Who should we send the eye doctor bill to, this screen is so white, I can't see anything but this white screen for minutes after leaving the site. You will lose fans with this upgrade. But the selling of the product is way more important.

Does the new site require fewer clicks to get where you want to be or to achieve what you want to achieve than the old site. So far the answer is a big fat NO. On the old version, if I was on this page and wanted to post a comment, I logged in and was taken back to this page again. Now, after logging in, I seem to have to go through five other pages before I can get back here where I can post a comment. Additionally loads of new tabs get opened in the process. I guess I will get used to all the extra click-work, but is this a step forwards in user friendliness and intuitiveness? Not to my way of thinking. Conclusion: FAIL.

PS: Still suffering from burnt retina syndrome due to the whiteness, the brightness of it all.

    2) Wanted to post about this from IceCreamKid:
"After posting that last comment I was sent to page 6 of this message board.
Why wasn’t I sent to the most recent post of this page?
    And another...
Those navigation numbers on the bottom of the page
First......1,2,3......Last
Put a copy of those on the top of the page too so that you don’t have to scroll to the bottom of the page just to move to another page."

That experience happened to me too (at first, thought my comment had not posted, then saw the page number) and his request is one I firmly second. If you have comments appearing newest first, scrolling to the bottom the page to change pages is annoying and there should be the same page list/links available above the comments as there is below.

Hope that my password problem goes away. Hope the vast fields of white do get filled in with something interesting but not distracting or obfuscatory.

The site did seem to need an overhaul. Hopefully, this overhaul will be beneficial. Thanks for trying, GDM crew.

I still haven't gotten an email actually. But hey, the site is revamped. I do have a charge to my account from dead.net so it seems to have gone through. While we're revamping things, I have a suggestion: make the Dave's Picks 2019 a larger run. 30,000 or 40,000. I'm sure they'll sell and less will end up on ebay...

I've been listening to the Dave's Picks Berkeley release from 72, I think number 24. Kreutzmann is unreal. He has so many quick fills and changes in which drums he's hitting to hold down the beat within each measure, while maintaining the timing for whatever particular measure he's in. It's a shame they brought Mickey back. I guess Jerry just wanted something else for the band.

Anyone with the 'Raised Dot' try the following (I know you should NOT have to do this):

1. Clean the disc - most times it will 'moisten' the DOT.

2. GENTLY scrape (don't dig) the Dot with your thumbnail. I know it sounds crazy but CDs are more resilient than most folks believe.

3. Clean the disc again. Repeat as necessary.

I've purchased many used discs over the years (some had the price reduced because of this) and this has worked for me many times.

Cleaning solution: 2-3 drops Dawn dish soap to 1 gal. distilled water - Dawn dish soap is used to clean water fowl caught in oil spills and is a mild non-abrasive cleanser.

Hope this helps and again you shouldn't have to do this.

Got back from Playing in the Sand late last night, quite the experience. It reminded me of a celeb rehab resort , a Road to Wellville for Deadheads or something.

The shows were fun, I would say still getting tuned up for the year (similar to last year, though a little less rusty I would say). Mayer was on point and there were several highlights, but some fumbling through as well. Over the course of three shows, I was hoping to get a few more of the songs I haven't caught yet (Truckin, Cassidy, Viola Lee, etc) but got a ton of great stuff.

I much prefer China > Rider as the straight sequence, but the first night with Cumberland sandwiched in there was a highlight. The transition from Deal > Bucket on the second show was the best, smooth man. Got a Dew..

The package is well put together, with the shuttles and other amenities taken care of. Got to do a day trip to Chichen Itza, sacrificed a virgin, seemed to fit well with the overall vibe of the trip. The guide took us to one memorial wall full of skulls, said the Mayans believed the skull was a symbol of the pathway to a better life. As you can imagine, quite a hit with that particular tie-dyed tourist group.

Stayed up the night of the last show and wandered the beaches and after parties. Found a drum circle on the beach in the dark that was sort of surreal, especially with the super blood wolf moon. Came across a little jam session, unfortunately at the tail end, but enough to sing El Paso and Big River with a small group including three flute solos on Big River. OK that was fun.

Everyone was really friendly, received a bunch bunch of stickers and coozies, all really well done for non-official merchandise. We didn't know to bring anything to trade, but received a ton unsolicited. The food and beverages were all well done, and the staff kept the place spotless during the shows. Everyone generally well behaved, no fights, vomiting, being obnoxious. The Luke Bryant "Crash My Playa" group was coming in as we were leaving...we'll see if they can say the same, haha.

Worth the trip? Ancient astronaut theorists say yes.

hey, it's not a raised dot, just a dot, like a period on paper, no indentation or applied extra product, just a dot, and it ain't coming off. No, this dot was not on the original, this is new but oddly enough, in the same spot when it plays. Go figure, I'm now going to ask for a refund. I sure hope this doesn't happen to Dave's 29 or 30.
Speaking of 29, wasn't the leftovers suppose to go on sale today? Did it happen and I missed it? Kinda gun shy for getting another copy anyway, just don't want to deal with anymore poorly manufactured discs.
Glad you had a good time in Mexico and glad you made it back in one piece, according to some, it's a dangerous place full of gangs and drugs. Did you see any? ;-) Sure wouldn't mind some Acapulco Gold

Skinner, sounds like a gas. Really dug your opening paragraph and finall sentence! LOL Thanks for the review.

Dreading; totally agree, sooo underrated. Now I love the Mickster, and he is also a fine drummer. Personally feel some of his solo albums are some of the best of the band. But imho Billy was better on his own, or when Mick took more of a percussionist role e.g., like early on, think of all the cool hand held stuff on 69 Dark Stars, or his role now in D&C.
Non of this is a diss on Mickey, just love Billies very unique style. See his interview in the Dead movie where he talks about how it’s just like dancing when he’s on. Always thought that was the perfect way to describe his playing versus “drumming” in the conventional sense.
Felt like by the 80s they quit trying to out “drum” each other and sort of meshed into one beautiful beast.
Perhaps age was a factor? Late seventies felt like they both just blasted all the time....perhaps too much powder?
I believe Billy alluded to some of this in his book, but the memory is going fast so would have to look it up.

Vguy; have seen you keeping the drive alive here with Jim and Daverock and others during the site transition. Thanks!
Thinking perhaps the time of year was also a factor in the low traffic as many get really slammed fall into the new year? Seems like more of the regs are coming around again, “which is nice”
But your jokes or lack there of have been missed! Here’s one for you bra!
As a mother is bathing her young son, he starts to hold his balls and asks her “momma, is this where my brains are?”
The mother is taken back for a minute but then reply’s, “not yet son, but someday”
Batta bing! Heh-ooohhh

Stay warm folks....”it’s forty below and I don’t give a @#$ cause it’s off to the rodeo....”

found 29 in the store under Dave's picks, it's still there if anyone is interested. I know I said in my first post that it was a raised dot but under closer inspection, it is just a dot, a blemish, a digi dot, a doohickey on the thingamajig. I was just on this page and went to the store to see if 29 was there, came back and had to log in again, again with the captcha's and buses and traffic lights and fire hydrants and motorcycles....

I can more than understand how you feel…those feelings are still fresh after the PNW Box Set. Here's hoping you get a refund or at least a playable disc.

I have been slowly absorbing the 73/74 box set from last year, and have just finished the 1973 Portland show. Beautiful clarity to the sound, and it is very obvious that all members of the band were absolute masters both of their instruments and in their ability to connect with each other. Bill too, obviously. During these shows no one member seems more important than any other-very different from other improvising rock bands of the time, who tended to feature a stellar soloist-usually a lead guitarist-with a supporting cast.

Incidentally, its taken me this long to really get into this box. When It first arrived, I was distracted by the fact that so many people had received faulty discs. So I played them all one after another in a short space of time. The discs were alright, as it goes. Then I played them all again, in a more relaxed frame of mind-but, maybe because I had just already listened-it all seemed a bit much.

Couldn't agree with you more DaveRock. Not hard to understand why when you consider all of the guys he played with, and the fact that he also shared the role with M.H., but Billy might be the most overshadowed and underrated drummers of all time, and that's saying a lot as this is the case with most great drummers. Drummers often times are the butt of the joke when it comes to being unreliable or partying too much, but it's hard to think of a member of any band who's been more reliable than Billy, not too mention unbelievably talented. Too think of how many shows he has played over the years, it's really quite staggering. Probably more "official" shows than any other GD band member (other than Bobby maybe)! I read his book last year and found it very enjoyable. Would highly recommend if anyone has not read.

Received my SECOND set of replacements for discs 1 and 3 of DaP28 yesterday, and today confirmed that these skip as well, disc 1 in Tennessee Jed, and disc 3 in Let It Grow. This is getting like a bad joke. I mean, I really appreciate the effort of sending replacements, but what good is it if they skip also?

"...Received my second set of replacement discs, which also skipped at the exact same spots.. so I called customer service. After spending three and a half hours on the phone and tossing my mini fridge out the window in frustration.. I finally got through to a supervisor and was informed I needed the RhinoMatic 3000 HDCD Player. After much discussion and divorce proceedings filed against by my wife for buying too many box sets anyway.. I decided to what do I have to lose.

Three Steelie encrusted toasters later, under the advice of my therapist.. I have decided to start listening to a different band."

Has anyone noticed you cannot yet post comments on the Dave's Picks 29 thread? I hope that's not their strategy for dealing with product defects.

Billy, underappreciated... not by me! I do like Mickey very much also.. don't get me wrong. But 71-74 GD is like fresh homemade grandma's recipe bread pudding for desert..

You are correct.. the Rhinomatic 3000 Zircron Encrusted Steelie toaster/HDCD player (C) (R) TM.

Alas.. when I put my discs into my new Steelie Zircron encrusted HDCD playing toasters. they skip at the exact same places just before ejecting a melting pool of shiny, trippy, gloopie goodness on my counter top.

I received 1 of the 2 replacements that I am waiting for, and it was also defective starting at 1:40 of Let It Grow.
My second replacement never showed up.

I got an email response from customer service (but not 2 replacement CD’s that aren’t defective).

At this point a public acknowledgement of the total screw up and an apology from the management is definitely due.
But that will never happen.

That's what we keep getting instead of working disc 3's. Coaters, tiles, we could use them for everything but listening to track 4 at 1:40. We've got three of'em so far, and now after suggesting that our players are sub-par and promising to test a copy on similar hardware, all contact has stopped, as if they just don't care at all. We've tested it on other players by the way, and so far the player with the best outcome was the Playstation 3. The logic behind trying it was that it's a blue-ray based player, meaning for it's laser to read the 1/0 dots on a CD is a bit like trying to thread a needle through a hula-hoop. If there's good real estate anywhere at the 1:40 mark, that's the method that should find it, and it did. Once. One time only. Rewinding back through the 1:40 mark CRASHED THE PLAYBACK SOFTWARE! I tried the PS3's ability to rip music and store it on the hard drive, and that got me a file that would play through, but with a tiny imperfection at the 1:40 mark. Anyway, I hope this helps as some of you might have an old game system laying around in a closet somewhere, and it /might/ get you a clean play through if you can't get any satisfaction from Rhino.

I have also been wondering if I would ever get a working copy of DaP 28 or a refund or credit of some sort if they are not going to replace the defective discs with working discs. Both disc 1 and disc 3 had skips on my original, and I have now received two separate sets of defective replacements for both discs, and all have skips. I haven't heard anything back in a while after notifying Dr. Rhino/customer service about the second set of defective replacements. Hopefully now that DaP 29 is out they will have time to get this sorted out, but at this point it is a pretty frustrating situation.

The CD player that I am using has no problem with any of the other Dave's Picks or the hundreds of other CD's that I play, both old and new discs. It seems to me it is incumbent on Rhino to provide discs that play in working CD players, not discs that kinda, sorta, maybe play on a PS3. I mean, glad it got some relief for Daves28Coaster, but it seems like a lot to ask of the customer.

I don’t want a refund, I want quality CDs.
I did get a single replacement that was defective, the other needed replacement was ignored.
Incompetence on a grand level.

I did get a response from Customer Service that said they were ‘looking into it’.
Time to stop looking into it and start solving the problem.

Oh! This is still going on is it...?

Last time I looked in here it was before I'd even listened to mine and someone said "hope it plays Ok" and I thought "hmm.. sounds like there's a "thing" with DAP28" and shoud have checked it then, but well, 1976, you know... so yes eventually found I had a faulty disc 3 in LIG but thought it might be too late to return it by then, plus what do you do about getting replacements for sold out limited editions anyway?

Can someone briefly summarise what's gone down? Are they still offering replacements? has it affected everybody or just some? TIA

I sent a personal message to Marye at the end of last year to tell her that discs 1 and 3 were faulty in my Daves Picks 28. She said she would send my message on to someone called Dr Rhino. About two weeks ago I sent her another pm to see if there was any progress. A few days later I got an email from Dr Rhino, telling me that there was a fault in the pressing of the original discs. Not all were affected, but a substantial amount were, apparently. He said they were looking into it, and that I would be sent a replacement disc-but that he couldn't say when this would be.

So...it might be worth sending a PM to Marye, or this Dr Rhino, and maybe you will get replacement later in the year.

Got my replacement disc 3 today, no replacement for disc 1. Oh yeah, and the disc 3 replacement skips again. This doesn't happen with any of the other several hundred CD's that I have, including my other dead releases. BOHICA. At this point it is more of a drag to continue dealing with the issue than to write off the possibility of having a skip free version of the release. I guess I appreciate the effort, but it accomplished nothing for my situation.

Mine arrived at the end of last week, and I am pleased and relived that they both-discs 1 and 3 play through perfectly.
As a consequence of receiving these discs, I listened to the whole show again, for the first time since it initially arrived. And I am well impressed. It rolls along very smoothly indeed-beautiful ensemble playing. True, the high wire jamming from the years up to 1974 has mysteriously disappeared, but its a tuneful and pleasing set. Very nice piano playing.

Hi,
I have gotten the complete run around on getting a replacement disc for disc #3. I have been sent 6 different copies of it and they all stop or skip on Track #4 (Let It Grow). I was told they finally figured out there was a defect in manufacturing, but I kept getting the same old defective discs. In emailing the situation to Doc at Rhino I have not gotten any replies back from emails sent to him in May, July and August. Either he does not work there anymore or he doesn't care. Customer Service is truly atrocious.

I feel your pain. I was unable to get a copy of DaP 28 that didn't skip on the CD player I had at the time. That was a Sony that was a few years old. It worked flawlessly with all of my other CD's. I recently got a new CD player, a basic Onkyo 6 disc changer, and lo and behold the DaP 28 replacement CD's that skipped on my Sony played without issue on the Onkyo. I don't know what the difference is, or why my Sony only had a problem with DaP 28, but I thought that I would let you know what my experience was with this release. Other than whatever causes the release to skip on some players, it is a stellar show.
