Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

I heard a rumor that the 89 fall tour was getting the box-set treatment. Given that several full shows from that tour have already been released, that seems unlikely to me. OTOH, that was my favorite tour in terms of what I actually attended, so I'd be happy to see it happen. Any thoughts? As for the cost of this E72 Box, the upfront 1.3 million does seem a bit high. Even considering salaries for Norman and the rest, plus physical production costs, I can't see how that could be more than a few hundred k. In terms of bang for the buck, though, it's hard to argue that the price is somehow "unfair;" it seems pretty reasonable. I was interested to read the comments about the classical music discs at a buck a piece. I know nothing about that market, so I don't know how well the two markets can be compared.

Man, I just this minute got off the phone from my bank who have just cancelled my Visa card because of some fraudulent transaction activity ocurring this morning. I got the call within 10 minutes of the transactions being posted so I am amazingly impressed and grateful at it being picked up so quick. But now I've got a 10 day wait for a new card to be issued.... 10 days before I can place my pre-order. Fingers crossed that these don't sell out before then.

I see that the general concensus is that the DN orders are good, it just bothers me that no one can actually look up my number and tell me anything specific about my particular order. Given what's happened so far I don't have a lot of faith in what "should" be ok.

The Latest and more from MARYE! 1. Yes, your DN orders are good. 2. Your credit/debit card providers have wildly different ways of dealing with this transaction, but many of them will put a hold on the funds for 3-5 days. This will result in havoc if the funds are not available on the account. Plan accordingly if this is likely to be an issue. 3. If your card is going to expire before September, let Customer Service know when you get the new one to avoid unpleasant surprises. [It would be very helpful if the new credit card had the same number as the old credit card] 4. Re personalization issues, all will soon become more clear than it is! Unable to login – PM Marye – she’ll try to fix anyone else getting hung up in mid-order once they've got their code, PM me (MARYE) the details and we'll see about getting this unsnarled. you are not the only person to get an RT confirmation for your Europe 72 order. PM me the particulars and I'll get a confirmation that all is as it should be. And folks, don't forget to check your spam/junk mail folders for these notifications. *********ALSO*********** The official stance on codes you do not intend to use is to let them expire standard edition = non-personalized box set. [and my favorite ] okay... Enough already with the bashing each other. That is all. Expressing one's opinion about the handling of this release and how one has fared therein is one thing. Calling each other names and telling each other where to go in profane and abusive terms is unacceptable here. Cut it out. Thank you.

I don't know how much more confirmation you need. If your that worried about it than put your code through and cancel your DN order. It's really not that complicated. For me, the word of at least 4 different CS reps, Marye, and a vp at Rhino is good enough. Oh, and the head of the GD Rhino staff said on Sirius on Sunday said that the orders that went through over the first few days were good. I think we are past the point of general consensus, and on to the point that it is a fact that the DN orders are 100% good. Proceed as you wish.

I reserved a copy last Friday when orders weren't going through. Had my code for 1 of the 3,000 early Monday, when to the site & ordered. E-mail confermation came STAT. It's taken longer to type this than oredering took. Sorry for those that somehow messed up. Seem easy to me. I do wish a 1 per rule had been in effect but what the hell, you want perfection from Dead Heads?HURRY UP SEPT. Ken

look over to the left side of this page(right under the F join the Grateful Dead on Facebook (?)) where it says 'my dead.net" then down to the bottom of 'my deadnet' where it says 'order status' click on that then you give your email address and then you are given all information on any orders you have made in the last month to that email. I am not being a wise guy here, it worked well and provided the info I wanted. Then I decided to ask a question, clicked on the area to request that info from a deadnet rep and 24 hours later (as it promised), I had an answer. I hope that helps someone else as well. And what would be the answer to the Answer Man? The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I'm sure I'll be shouted at here, but everyone needs to take a step back regarding bashing resellers/profiteers. As of right now, it's hardly even an issue. You've got a couple of people peddling codes and as of my last count a whopping NINE box sets active on eBay and about FOUR that have been sold. BY my sophisticated mathematical abilities that's 13 box set. 13 = approximately 1/3 of 1% of the personalized copies, or 1/8 of 1% of the 7200 regular box sets. I understand that the witch hunt is in full flight, but seriously folks, less than 1%. It's like getting hysterical over the possibility of being struck by lightning. If it's all about the music, the music only copy exists and still remains an unbelievable value. ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.

I'd like someone who can actually see my specific order in an order system to tellme thst it is ok since all I saw were errors when I actually ordered. I don't really trust a general statement that all DN orders are OK. Also, I'm not sure how anyone is going to be able to cancel the DN order if they can't see it in their order system. Of course if they could see it to cancel it they could also confirm it.

We apologize for the miscommunication caused while ordering the Europe 32 box set. We would like to inform that the DN854**** is the confirmation ID for the reservation done. You will be sent an email at the earliest to continue with the ordering process for this box set. I chose to go ahead and complete my reservation order, which went just fine. Not really, I just thought it would be fun to say that. (Try it, you might like it...just don't believe it...unless you need it...then leave it if you dare.) Excuse me, but I had something really momentous and helpful to share, but I lost it in that sudden Box of Rain cascade of serotonins and now all I want to do is tell you all how wonderful you are. Dammit. Never mind, ignore this, keep on dancin'.

ajax2552 , I'm beginning to think you have never really called customer service. I have talked to at least 5 different people there and all of them have confirmed the DN orders with a very legitamate reason of why you cannot look them up on the website. Marye who has fixed 99% of the problems for anyone that has a had a problem at Dead.net, and is easily the most reliable resource of information on this site, said she has confimation that the orders were good. As a part of that, she forwarded me the confimation she received from the Rhino VP. Finally, in your original message, you said you were sitting on a code email to order a set. If it was bothering you that much, why wouldn't you order with the code and try to cancel the DN order? There have been at least 5-6 people who have done this very thing. Than it wouldn't really matter if you thought your DN order was good or not. Really, what are you trying to do? Really, did I just waste 5 minutes reading these posts and replying?

The gospel according to St. Dilbert, as translated by Robert Hunter: "St. Dilbert was walking in the market one day when up staggered a Bozo to ask his opinion on whether the king, who had been caught with his hand in exchequer, ought to abdicate, be deposed, have his hand cut off, or be given a medal. With very little pondering, the Dilbert is said to have replied: "You Bozos slay me. You pick a king who best represents the sum of your individual lameness to rule you, and then complain because he has a big red nose." While considering this reply, the Bozo smelled smoke, and looking down realized that the Dilbert had, once again, placed a lighted match between his toes."

I've been hoping all week that common sense would prevail and that Rino/deadnet would announce an increased production run.Unfortunately it seems that commercial considerations may outweigh treating fans reasonably - after all if they can sell lots of "music only " sets at the full price that's more profit. I think that the deadhead community ought to be able to point out that a fairer approach would be to keep sunbscriptions open until the end of March and at that point produce a known number of box sets to meet the demand with people after that being given the music only option. If absolutely necessary the first 7,200 boxes could be numbered and have an additional "gift" in them. It seems to me that it should be possible to organise an online petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling in this regard and that if this prtition was supported by many of those who have been able to buy the box set that would send a pretty clear message of what the deadhead community wants that Rhino/deadbnnet should not ignore. It would also be a more positive move than just slagging people off and would give us some sense of empowerment even if it was ignored. Anyone agree and know of the best site to host such a thing? Johnn Christian (lucky enough to have been at Wembley in 1972 for Dark Star but not lucky enough (so far) to get a box set. johnw.christian@virginmedia.com

You don't need to be "lucky" to get the music. It's about the music and everyone EVERYONE has equal access to it. You need $450 just like everyone else. You missed out on the collectors item. It happens. You're not entitled to it and you're not running the business. Put your money down or let it go. You may get lucky. At least why not make a reservation for the music only version as an insurance policy? This could perhaps put you on the waiting list for left-over box sets while you are trying for a magic code. You can always cancel your music only option if you get lucky with the box or change your mind. Just a (polite) suggestion. Also remember that those magic codes only last 2 weeks. If everyone refuses to buy them off the scalpers they may end up giving them away or the reservations will be reclaimed and help out those on the waiting list.

I'd have been disappointed if I hadn't been able to get the box set, but if I could only have ordered the music, I wouldn't be talking about petitions or lawsuits. At least they are selling the music on its own, unlike the Fillmore box, where they really couldn't, because of their selling it as a limited edition.

This is becoming a trend for some bands and I think its a good thing. I collect all kinds of music and a limited ed. makes it collectable (kudos to the 7200 lucky folks) I was snoozin so I'm loozin on the box set but I put in my order for just the discs. This is better than nothing (IMHO) This is a great trend which I hope continues. Long Live The Grateful Dead!

johnchristian wrote:"If absolutely necessary the first 7,200 boxes could be numbered and have an additional "gift" in them." This is what I wish Rhino would do. Make the 7,200 a numbered edition with a certificate proclaiming it the ultra-exclusive, elite, juba-juba, wooly-bully version. But make enough extra so that there are still unnumbered copies for everybody who wants one but missed the first round. And all the folks on the music-only list should get that as a default, and be on standby for the limited version.

So, have any inependent resellers been ordering multiples for their shops? I'm torn btweenbeing in favord of that as apposed to everybody gettig one (boxed set). At the very least they (Indies) should have been liimted to 5 and provded a copy of a business license. Am I wrong to to let indies in on this at a very low number 5) considring the demand. I'm not a reesller but it seems fair to get what you want, now, (release time) for a 25% mark-up if you missed the boat entirely.

I have just been reliably informed that whoever is responsible for post number 7200 on this thread will receive a super ‘organic’ deluxe box set with added extras such as • A rare French glass vial of Bob Weir spittle • Genuine scratchings of Jerry Garcia dandruff • 3 (three) Pigpen nose hairs • A Golden Virginia tobacco tin full of genuine English mud taken from the swamp that was Bickershaw, • A hand crafted bottle of used engine oil from the Bozo bus • A certified culture grown from swabs taken from the Bolo bus and lovingly propagated these last 38 years in a secret laboratory in Humboldt county • A toothpick used by Robert Hunter to extract a particularly stubborn piece of sausage at a restaurant in Munich (sausage remnant NOT included, but will be sold separately on ebay) Oh and a whole bunch of great music ;-) Get posting

...by underestimating demand, playing the numbered/collectible card, and of course having a web site that didn't work. But if they had started with the unnumbered, unlimited $450 box, which they still offer, no one would be claiming that they can't get the music (a la FW box). I thought the big thing for all us DHs is the MUSIC, no? And this music is and always will be available to whomever can pay for it. And you just KNOW that eventually they will sell individual shows or smaller runs. So why is everyone so upset? Because someone else is getting trinkets that they aren't? Because they didn't get a code despite asking for one (understandable to be upset about that one)? For a group of folks who always claim to be all about the music, there is a pretty vocal minority here who are all upset about the coffee table book and other unnamed baubles.

actually i DID see that comin'. i saw that comin' 5 years ago when all the archive soundboards were first taken down. i knew EXACTLY what they were planning to do with the europe 72 shows. meh. i got my hands on most of those shows anyways and are my most prized part of my music collection. might consider going for this if i somehow spring across an extra $500 after paying to fix the damage to my car from a recent hit-and-run

I shall add those items from my own special collection. I will also include some shards from a glass of Hoegaarden shattered in the bar by Donna Jean during some exceptional vocal gymnastics at the Concertgebouw

but a grasshopper to you master...but seriously, I'm not sure I can wait another 7+ months for this box...I am super-jazzed...It's like every day is X-mas eve and I'm an eight-year old who found out where my parents stash the presents...

they couldn't have produced the boxes already and had them set to ship by, say, April...Btw, my personalization is a little generic, just my name, nothin' fancy...I think it's kinda cool though to have my name attached to anything produced by those absolute super-human beings the Grateful Dead...I'm gettin' goosebumps...

I have had a brilliant idea. If everybody who has snagged a box set makes a $10 donation to the Rex Foundation then 1. Those people might feel a little less guilty about blowing all that money on CDs and souvenirs 2. The people who got the 'music only' set would be satisfied that they had now paid less 3. The Rex Foundation would get $72,000 How about it. Does Rex take online donations in a straightforward, modern, non clunky way?

they shoulda charged $460 for the box, had a disclaimer that $10 would go to The Rex Foundation, then nobody would have to worry about getting the money to them, now that's win-win...I for one would've had no problem paying the extra $10 since I'm already in for $450

"How about it. Does Rex take online donations in a straightforward, modern, non clunky way?" Yup, got a "make a donation" button right there on the homepage, couple of clicks and they're happy to take your digits. Long as I'm there, might as well pick up that "Jerry Jams" disc too :D

Dead.net could be gracious and donate $10 out of the $450 and charge $430 for the music-only box and everybody comes up smelling like roses...

I am snow and fog bound in Skopje Airport (more like a shed in a field) in Macedonia and in a few hours I will be getting on a bus over the mountains to Kosovo (yes UN administered former war zone Kosovo!) to try to get a flight home from there. Whole situation making me act stupid. Will donate when and if I get home. Don't trust the internet here for financial transactions.
