Perpetual Groove
My 17 year old son got me listening to PGroove about 3 years ago. They are definitely worth checking out. Great scene and great people. They move between laid back jams to a techno sound. They put on a 3 day festival at a friend of mines 250 acre farm in Lafayette GA every Memorial day weekend called Amberland that is amazing. Just them playing 3 to 5 sets a day till the wee hours of the morning.

If David Grisman's Bluegrass Experience rolls through your neck of the woods this summer I HIGHLY recommend checking them out. We spent a lazy summer friday night in Denver last night enjoying them. Not only did we get some extraordinary guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle pickin', we got a nice lesson in the history of bluegrass from the man himself ... to top it off, out of nowhere .. could it be? YES! a bluegrassy Dark Hollow. Man oh man what a night!! The best part is I get to see them again tonight in Boulder.

The first night was better but only because it was in Denver where the crowd was a lot more respectful. The Boulder show was filled with college kids who didn't know how to shut the F up and listen. I mean these guys play acoustic and they aren't even plugged into amps so excessive talking and laughing and partying kind of ruins the show you know? Like David said "Lost today is the art of listening". Great advice.

Steve Winwood and Carlos Santana
They're touring together this summer. Saw them Sunday night and both were excellent! Steve has still got it and Carlos, well he's Carlos, enough said! One highlight was when Steve came on stage during Carlos' set and they did Marvin Gaye's "Right On". If they're coming your way I highly recommend them!
Local Band: Forgotten Space (in North Texas)
My first time on the Board...My wife and I went out for drinks last Friday night at a local bar in Grapevine Texas called Tolberts. Tolberts features local bands on Friday's and Saturday's. On Friday, a Dead tribute band called Forgotten Space played at Tolberts. The band was absolutely great! It was our first time to see this band and we were impressed.
The lead guitar player, Kenny Withrow, replicated the Jerry Garcia sound down to the riff and note. Kenny Withrow is one of the founding members of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. All-in-all, the band played the Dead music very well!

Ted - I love when they play Cream Puff War! I heard John Bell sing Morning Dew a few years back - damn it sent chills down my spine and a tear or two down my face.
Speaking of Panic - they are getting ready for a 3 night run in the Fox in Oakland. If you live in the Bay area, get your rear to these shows!! Oh and bring ear plugs, they are the loudest band I have ever heard live. And that is saying something =)

DJ Shadow
I was fortunate enough to see Shadow when he came to Baltimore a while back (sorry it has taken me so long to post this) and I think this guy is on to something really cool. I didn't see him as being a DJ but rather an artist playing the most complicated digital instrument ever conceived. I had a blast and can't wait to see another show and I really wish I had enough stamina to have seen him after that epic Super Jam @ Bonnaroo in '06 (If memory serves). I had to hear about that show for years from my sons while waiting my chance to take in the experience.

First, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams.
International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. House of Floyd
Excuse the double posting. I check in here everyday to read, but I just finally added my own first post (hurray!), and sure enough put it under the wrong category. So here's it again, this time under the correct topic...
(The vibe at this show was so JerryBobPhil, that all week I've been feeling that I spent the weekend with them. But it was Floyd. A kind Floyd. Sweeeet.)
I caught most of the House of Floyd last weekend and just wanted to pass the word, since there's not much Floyd written about here. This was the closest thing to an old Floyd concert that I've experienced, other than the recent Roger/Dave shows. They've got the space jam thing totally together. The Floyd tribute bands I've tried the past few hears have been mostly note for note copying of albums, especially the later albums which I'm not that fond of anyway (I was, just not anymore). House of Floyd played some great tunes and had the right "feel". They didn't copy/peforrm, but actually played the music as if it was their own. So some songs barely even sounded like the originals but it didn't matter at all. And the songs went from one right into the other. Very Dead-like. And the energy was turned on full throughout. This is the only video I've found of the show. I missed about the first half of the first set, but I got to see Echoes (AWESOME!), Shine On II (see video), some tunes I never heard that really jammed, and a Dark Side of the Moon that was full of amazing energy and effects. One of those shows that you wished you knew about in advance.

Great American Taxi
Caught their terrific show last night at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco. Shortly before midnight, Vince Herman (he of Leftover Salmon fame) announced that it was almost 11/11/11. I remarked to my brother how it would be way cool if they played "The Eleven" to commemorate the unique date. Mere seconds after the words left my mouth, they launched into a blistering, high-energy version of that very song. The place went nuts!
The band is currently working its way up the west coast. Don't miss 'em if they play anywhere near where you live - a guaranteed good time!

New band-Jugtown Pirates
It's so refreshing to see new bands like The Jugtown Pirates(who live in Haight-Asbury) playing their hearts out on their stoop, trying to make it in the business and working extremely hard to become recognized by Gd entourage & deadheads.This is our music!! They submitted three Dead Covers tunes (I Know you Rider, Midnight Moonlight & Jack-a-Roe) in their own style. When I saw them on the Haight, they played a lot of their own music and are starting to get a good following. I wish people would listen to their tunes and help them by voting for them on YouTube. They are playing at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, Ca March 16th and opening for Poor Man's Whiskey at the Great American Music Hall April 21. A real laid back classic rock sound, greatly influenced by the Allmans, Guess Who and GOGD. I think this band will replace Nicklecrap as the biggest band from Canada. Check em out folks.

any one see this at theaters last night? I was wondering if any one knows the name of the band that was playing before the show, from what I remember it looked like they were in a studio playing a couple dead tunes. Any help would be great!

Mother Hips
Blair has been talking about Tim and Nicki Bluhm is his blog posts and Tim Bluhm has recently finished a bunch of shows with Phil at Terrapin Crossroads. He also did a tour with Billy and Mickey a couple years ago. His main band, The Mother Hips from Chico, CA recently celebrated 20 years together as a band. You might remember them from their psychedelic origins playing the HORDE, Gather of The Vibes and Laguna Seca Daze festivals in the early/mid '90s.

In older age Jeff is remarkedly creative. Emotion Commotion with free listening tracks on youTube should stir the music within us. The emotional tones can fill our ears with words and feelings. Talking 'bout emotion: Love your neighbor and Love your enemy....paradox?? Sheen teaches that two emotions can exist in that I could love Stalin but Dislike what Stalin does. All for now, my earthly life beckons for me to keep on praising God's works.
