Ten years either side of Kind of Blue has everything you could possibly want. Veinte anos. Wow! That would be kind of like saying ten years either side of Cornell (relax Space) I love all the stuff he recorded at Rudy's. "Round About Midnight, Milestones, Kind of Blue, too. Someday My Prince Will Come, Seven Steps To Heaven and the second quintet, oh, my! Plugged Nickel and Bootleg Series, Vol 1. Can I have a halenana! I'll be RT'ing tomorrow w/ the abridged 6/16/74. But the one for the ages is two nights later - I'll forgive the apocopation 'cause it sounds so darn good!

More Miles, Last Few

Definitely wanted to chime in regarding the excellence of Miles' Sketches of Spain and In a Silent Way, those are great, also would suggest Kind of Blue as a good choice from 1959. Another one that I dig, that I didn't see anyone mention is Miles In The Sky from 1968, the year before In a Silent Way. The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions box set is excellent, as is the Complete Bitches Brew Sessions box set, both with extras not included on the original albums. Last Few: Psychedelic Soul - Temptations (Funky soul sounds with a little psychedelic edge) Superfly - Curtis Mayfield (dig that funky stuff) Dick's Picks 36 (9/21/72) - Grateful Dead (a jazzy Darkstar for sure) Miles at the Fillmore Miles Davis 1970: Bootleg Series vol. 3 - Miles Davis GarciaLive Vol. 7 (11/8/76) - Jerry Garcia Hitsville USA Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971 (4 discs of solid Motown goodness) Dave's Picks 18 (7/17/76)- Grateful Dead (Really dig this release, lots of good jams on disc 2)

Electric Miles

Thanks very much to those who responded to my thread on Miles Davis. They have actually made me feel like listening to him again-always a sign of good writing on music, when you feel like listening to what has been written about. I have to confess, I haven't heard either On The Corner or Agartha-so maybe I should seek them out. The ones from this era that I based my opinion on are Bitches Brew, A Tribute To Jack Johnson, Live Evil, Live at The Fillmore East, live at The Fillmore West, Black Beauty and one called In Concert-which someone recorded for me-I think its from 1973. I thought Jack Johnson was incredible when I first heard it. But over the last few years, whenever I put it on, I find myself taking it off again after about 10-15 minutes. It gradually dawned on me that-explosive though it is-I don't actually like it. I want to...I just don't! Fault lies with me, I should say. Incidentally, I am listening to 1st March 1969 as I type this-incredible! The best box set so far must be the Fillmore West 1969, and I missed it through not having a computer when it came out.

All I know is that a lot of your recent posts bring me down and push buttons in people. Your older enthusiastic posts that call out your favorite 80's Dead moments are awesome. But these other Help I am being repressed posts make me want to take a long break from these boards....Peace I'm out

DaveRock Miles Behind?

I'm not sure you are going to get critical Miles commentary here on these threads from Improv Rock based Dead fans. I'm sure in the Pure Jazz circles any of his work from the point he ditched the acoustic bass & added guitars is considered blasphemous. Wynton Marsalis is probably sickened by the Funk/rock Miles era and would agree that he took on an "uglier tone". But true artists attempt to move forward, but sometimes simply go laterally or even backwards. And yes they are influenced by what is going on around them. And it's a fact that Jimi Hendrix was revolutionizing rock music & James Brown's band went form soul funk to hard funk. How could you not be influenced by that? All you need is to have taste. You may find this Miles era monotonous or even blatantly commercial. But I do Get Off on that 25 minute side A of the Jack Johnson LP. Even though Billy Cobham will never be Tony Williams or John McLaughlin can certainly not replace John Coltrane. And I still think On the Corner is brilliant. To me it's not a failed attempt at all though I wholeheartedly acknowledge that the So What Miles era is obviously his high point & a high point for the whole Jazz genre. Some may say that Miles made a misguided attempt at Pop music by reinterpreting Cindy Lauper & Michael Jackson songs in the 80's-that I can probably agree with. Electric Mud may be a low point for Muddy but I guess you might say he redeemed himself at the end or did he simply return to his comfort safe zone with those Johnny Winter era LP's? Miles 80's work is not my cup of tea but at least he was still searching and never static.

And that point was?....to convince others I'm a horrible person because I was gifted a box set so am not entitled to complain about a shipping issue that led to the receiving of damaged product?....that because I was gifted a free box that I'm a horrible person if I express a personal opinion about something? What exactly is your point in mentioning that I was gifted an unsolicited box set from a crowdfunded effort put forward by jrf68 when I was between jobs? More importantly, what is your motive?

i've seen two of your posts in one weekcomplaining about someone's negative comments-guess what, when someone has an opinion that is not aligned with your thoughts,even if it's about someone setting a price for something they selling or the band is slop before pigpen.its gonna be negative.it's their prerogative to say it's not worth it or no thanks.i think it's your emotional immaturity to anything negative or something you don't agree with.you could have left it to-"that's your opinion and i don't agree."instead you feel it's necessary to put someone down.earth without rain is a desert.

Pauses between tracks?

Hi all, A technical issue I'm hoping to resolve: Recently ordered this set, promptly downloaded the CDs to my iTunes collection. Getting 1-2 second pauses between most of the tracks which disturbs the flow of the music. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it? Gareth

It’s most likely caused by a setting in iTunes. Go into the iTunes preferences and see what is listed for import settings, as well as for playback settings.If you still can’t fix it then google it, there should be instructions somewhere.

Recommendations for a Newly Grateful Deadhead?

Newly Grateful Recommendations

You know, Gareth, it really comes down to what you like about the Dead... When I put in the Dead, I rarely want to listen to songs, so to speak. I tend to go for the long, inspired jams. For this, I would suggest the Winterland 1973 boxed set as No. 1, so far... though in general, shows from the 1973-1974 will be your best bet for this... That said, there are gems of shows throughout the years, though I've never personally been impressed by anything later than 1977. May 1977: Get Shown the Light (All Music Edition) is a great collection from this year. I also really love One from the Vault, Sunshine Daydream, & Dick's Picks, Vol. 14... The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is an all-too-looked-over gem, too. Finally, if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting a copy of the Pacific NW '73-'74 boxed set while it's still available on this site. When these sell out on dead.net, they price-inflate like crazy to 2x their original cost or more.

Get Shown the Light, the box with the book, was limited to 15,000 copies, I read somewhere.But I can’t find anything on the All Music Edition that’s still available. Can somebody tell me how many of those were printed?

Best digital format?

So, I'm totally showing my newbie-ness, but when the formats are digital, which is the best to download? I'm thinking about uploading to iphone for maximum bluetoothing. Also, is the first selection a CD collection of the four shows? I didn't see it listed behind the All Music Edition, so I figured it must be sold out.

16/44.1 is CD format, so you could convert to WAV or AIFF on a computer and burn CDs if you wanted to, as well as have the digital file on a music player.

The higher resolution files are for a computer or music player. If you wanted to burn CDs from those files you would lose the higher resolution that you paid more for.

I downloaded the ALAC of this digital download but when I import into iTunes it is not recognizing the artist or songs and not creating an album. For the same ALAC download for Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: The Complete Recordings Boxed Set it worked perfectly in iTunes. Why does this download now import correctly? Thanks if anyone knows or can help.

May 1977: Get Shown The Light (All Music Edition)

Since they sold out of the regular box set with all the bells and whistles, and had a huge demand, Dead.Net is selling an All Music Edition that "...only includes the 11 CDs in four folios and a booklet of liners, housed in a simple slipcase."

So, still the four shows, just without the special packaging and the unpublished book. This time, the order went through. Nothing on the website about this also being a limited release -- it's not numbered, but they don't specify if it's another set amount.

Excellent news ! I wonder if they will re-release other box sets in this format that originally sold out. Fillmore West 1969 is the one I sadly missed out on and would shell out for in a heartbeat.

Does somebody have problems with tracking number?

I've purchased the fantastic Lyceum LPs more than a month ago and still nothing arrived.
I've searched for the tracking number done by the GD store on the DHL site but nothing appears.
I've yet written to the customer helpdesk, but I'm curious if somebody encountered my same problem.

Just to state the obvious, they are indeed fantastic records. I am half way through 5/25/72 at the moment - one that no-one really mentions. Probably because of the night after, which is a shame as it's a great show in it's own right. Curious "Good Lovin" - 14min 53 seconds, and no Pigpen rap - he just sings the opening the verses and the closing ones some 12 minutes later. In between we have spot on r'n'b jamming like no-one else.
