Dead on film

I decided to take a break from Spring 1977 yesterday, and as I very rarely watch films of The Dead, I decided to watch the dvd from "Crimson White and Indigo"-Philadelphia 7/7/89. I couldn't believe how good it was-or how it had slipped my attention in the past. From the opening song, Hell In Bucket, the band, and Jerry in particular are playing out of their skins. Phil's playing is also brilliant-especially in the second set. In a way the show wasn't as different from 1977 as I was expecting. Sure, there are many songs played here that weren't played in the former year, but the heart of the show consists of Scarlet-Fire, followed by Estimated. Spiritually it seems closer to 1977, than that year does to any of the years preceding 1976-despite the relative closeness of the years. The only down side, sadly, is the lack of Keith and the addition of Brent. His playing is okay-but its a bit of a downer having him end set one by huffing and puffing his way through Blow Away. He clearly sang from his heart-but, no, it sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise sublime show. Blues lovers may disagree, but I think Brent was much worse than Pigpen when he got hold of the microphone.

So...

Posted this over on Dave's 22 thread by mistake. It was meant for here.... Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend and took a moment to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom and this great country. I've been loving Dave's 22 and bonus and, really, the whole series. There are some I reach for less than others (Dave's 20), but overall, this series is awesome. Many thanks to all those that take the time to put em all together for us grateful folks. And since this thread is descending into name calling and political bullshit-- I call on Bolo to maybe drop a clue for DaP 23 and I humbly submit my last 5... 1. 7/29/66- Vancouver- sounds great for 50+ years ago 2. 2/14/68- Carousel- Primal Dead 3. Brothers and Sisters (vinyl) - Allman Brothers. RIP. 4. 5/5/77- this one I had never heard before- glad it got the treatment for this box 5. Traveller (vinyl)- Chris Stapleton- some good country from a good songwriter. Be good to one another, all- no matter what you believe or think. I think I'll head back over to DaP 22- it's a lot nicer over there.

How come people who want to spew such negative views always have brand new screen names to post under? Why not post with your first dead.net login? Why hide behind a freshly created identity if you are not ashamed or embarassed by your opinions? Why would such a "tough" and "powerful" person be so afraid of a wimpy liberal and not be proud of who they are? Dont you have a gun and the 2nd amendmet to protect you? Why hang around dead.net and never participate in board discussions except in this manner and topic? Just wondering why the first we hear from you is a bunch of rhetoric and name-calling? Would you be more at home and comfortable in a Richard Spencer rally or Dead show? Is it supposed to be symbolic that you named yourself for an extinct dinosaur? I know thats a whole lot of questions but I would like your thoughtful explanations so I'm not so confused. Please feel free to answer with wild and incorrect assumptions about me being a BLM cop killing marxist, socialist, lazy welfare-taking immgrant. It wouldnt be the first time. Just to let you know the last time I heard playground name-calling like that was by my low-income and first generation 6th graders who still make up nicknames like "Snotty Sally." And what's with the animosity towards Russians? I thought you claimed to be so tolerant and inclusive, yet here you are implying something inherently negative about Russians? Our former secy of state sure didn't feel that way when she took $100 million in bribes from the Russians to approve that uranium deal for them, now did she. Not to mention the $35 million from the Kremlin into Pedesta's company as well. Talk about "collusion." Be careful what you wish for, maybe we really do need an investigation, hmmm. But don't bother researching the facts, just keep feeding your emotions and keep following the lead of Mad Maxine and Nutty Nancy, and watch how many more seats you lose...

I am listening to a great Dark Star from a David Gans link. This website is incredible.The ABB are done, isn't it odd they do their farewell thing and now they are gone. Oh, that was Steve Kimock performing Dark Star on the Grateful Dead Hour, and now some 71 Dead. The ABB don't have the archive that the Dead did. I still am a Dicky Betts fan,even after He got the boot. The ABB had to depend on his songwriting, to do a great show, "Elizabeth Reed", "Blue Skys", Gregg cost the band tours,he was always forgiven. Anyway, just my thoughts. Thinking about why the shows from 77 sounded so much better, technology was better for tape restoration than when Dick's Picks came out. It's incredible , "Dead and Company" are doing another run. They are having fun and sounding good. Deadheads still exist, quite a miracle.

It's not your imagination, it's the Rhino bicycle messenger delivery crew at work. I heard the batch delivered to Canada today were cycled in from California by none other than MaryE herself. I think the same thing happened to me once.. I posted here that it seems everyone received their Dave's Pick except me. Five minutes later a knock on the door and in the distance a well dressed hipster on a bicycle could be seen rounding the corner at the end of the street. Glad you got your box..

i've seen two of your posts in one weekcomplaining about someone's negative comments-guess what, when someone has an opinion that is not aligned with your thoughts,even if it's about someone setting a price for something they selling or the band is slop before pigpen.its gonna be negative.it's their prerogative to say it's not worth it or no thanks.i think it's your emotional immaturity to anything negative or something you don't agree with.you could have left it to-"that's your opinion and i don't agree."instead you feel it's necessary to put someone down.earth without rain is a desert.

Pauses between tracks?

Hi all, A technical issue I'm hoping to resolve: Recently ordered this set, promptly downloaded the CDs to my iTunes collection. Getting 1-2 second pauses between most of the tracks which disturbs the flow of the music. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it? Gareth

It’s most likely caused by a setting in iTunes. Go into the iTunes preferences and see what is listed for import settings, as well as for playback settings.If you still can’t fix it then google it, there should be instructions somewhere.

Newly Grateful Recommendations

You know, Gareth, it really comes down to what you like about the Dead... When I put in the Dead, I rarely want to listen to songs, so to speak. I tend to go for the long, inspired jams. For this, I would suggest the Winterland 1973 boxed set as No. 1, so far... though in general, shows from the 1973-1974 will be your best bet for this... That said, there are gems of shows throughout the years, though I've never personally been impressed by anything later than 1977. May 1977: Get Shown the Light (All Music Edition) is a great collection from this year. I also really love One from the Vault, Sunshine Daydream, & Dick's Picks, Vol. 14... The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is an all-too-looked-over gem, too. Finally, if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting a copy of the Pacific NW '73-'74 boxed set while it's still available on this site. When these sell out on dead.net, they price-inflate like crazy to 2x their original cost or more.

Get Shown the Light, the box with the book, was limited to 15,000 copies, I read somewhere.But I can’t find anything on the All Music Edition that’s still available. Can somebody tell me how many of those were printed?

Best digital format?

So, I'm totally showing my newbie-ness, but when the formats are digital, which is the best to download? I'm thinking about uploading to iphone for maximum bluetoothing. Also, is the first selection a CD collection of the four shows? I didn't see it listed behind the All Music Edition, so I figured it must be sold out.

16/44.1 is CD format, so you could convert to WAV or AIFF on a computer and burn CDs if you wanted to, as well as have the digital file on a music player.

The higher resolution files are for a computer or music player. If you wanted to burn CDs from those files you would lose the higher resolution that you paid more for.

I downloaded the ALAC of this digital download but when I import into iTunes it is not recognizing the artist or songs and not creating an album. For the same ALAC download for Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: The Complete Recordings Boxed Set it worked perfectly in iTunes. Why does this download now import correctly? Thanks if anyone knows or can help.

Since they sold out of the regular box set with all the bells and whistles, and had a huge demand, Dead.Net is selling an All Music Edition that "...only includes the 11 CDs in four folios and a booklet of liners, housed in a simple slipcase."

So, still the four shows, just without the special packaging and the unpublished book. This time, the order went through. Nothing on the website about this also being a limited release -- it's not numbered, but they don't specify if it's another set amount.

Excellent news ! I wonder if they will re-release other box sets in this format that originally sold out. Fillmore West 1969 is the one I sadly missed out on and would shell out for in a heartbeat.

Does somebody have problems with tracking number?

I've purchased the fantastic Lyceum LPs more than a month ago and still nothing arrived.
I've searched for the tracking number done by the GD store on the DHL site but nothing appears.
I've yet written to the customer helpdesk, but I'm curious if somebody encountered my same problem.

Just to state the obvious, they are indeed fantastic records. I am half way through 5/25/72 at the moment - one that no-one really mentions. Probably because of the night after, which is a shame as it's a great show in it's own right. Curious "Good Lovin" - 14min 53 seconds, and no Pigpen rap - he just sings the opening the verses and the closing ones some 12 minutes later. In between we have spot on r'n'b jamming like no-one else.
