This recording features it pretty well. Top five live Dead experiences for me. Heads all empty and i don't care indeed.

    I couldn't agree more, L.D.

Just a snipped from Wikipedia on the topic.. I love the just sing your guts out comment by older brother Duane.

Duane felt strongly his brother should be the vocalist of the new group (which effectively eliminated Wynans's position, as Gregg also played keyboards).[19] Gregg left Los Angeles and entered rehearsal on March 26, 1969, when the group was rehearsing Muddy Waters' "Trouble No More"[20] Although Gregg was initially intimidated by the musicians, Duane pressured his brother into "singing [his] guts out."[21]

P.S. KF, who said the riding mower is broken? It's working fine, but it runs on mushroom dust and the mileage is not great.. it only gets a couple years per cap / stem. I think I broke out the original Avatar recently.. but I sort of prefer Peabody and Sherman. Perhaps I am dating myself.

Five to One baby, One in Five......

Oh by the way, I put out a trivia question last week when Five to One came up for discussion: What two guitar players used Robby Krieger's guitar solo on each of their own two original songs (hint - both guitar players came from groups who have sold millions of records). It was Ace Frehley of KISS and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam. Ace used it on the song She; McCready used it on Alive. Little bit of trivia I picked up over the years. The funny thing is that Mike McCready and Ace became friends many years later. As the story goes, Mike finally got up the nerve to tell Ace he stole his solo, to which Ace blurted, "Aack! Don't sweat it Curly, I lifted that one from Five to One.""

Wait a minute....hold the phone......as I'm writing this completely interesting Paul-is-dead-type of rock trivia piece, I'm realizing there are some odd coincidences at work here:

    * The KISS song She is featured on KISS' album "Alive"
    * The song Alive contains the lyric "she" - five times......Ladies & Gentlemen - we've come full circle.

I dug the Allmans. The first show I saw of them was at Red Rocks with Dickey and Warren Haynes on guitar and Allen Woody on bass. Jaimoe and Butch, and of course, Gregg. The whole time I was pinching myself going, holy shit that's Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts up there.

To my ears Gregg was one of the finest blues singers ever and I'm not going to qualify it by saying "white." The man just oozed soul and I miss that gravelly delivery and world weariness. He was expertly cast as drug dealer Will Gaines in the movie Rush, as well, for those who haven't seen it.

The Derek Trucks/Warren Haynes era was killer, as well. Gregg gradually sobered up and put more energy into his performances. For anyone interested, Berry Oakley Jr., Devon Allman and Duane Betts are now fronting a band:

    https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/allman-betts-band-new-…

Last, I'll just say it's meaningless to compare the Dead with the Allmans. Much overlap, and much difference. All good if you ask me.

    Hey Jeff S

Thanks again for the cover artwork. I failed in The Other One mission. I too only took mental notes, and I was harried by the Dave's Picks 30 release. I can however, say without reservation, that the Other Ones from Europe 72 sound nothing like the pair on the new Dave's Picks 30 - but you already knew that ;-)

I think the only one I heard from the month of May was the Paris show on the 3rd. Oh wait, I also listened to Luxembourg. That one was really hot. Probably not news, but the one from Hundred Year Hall was a work of art. I usually have an easier time getting into them when they split them up into multiple parts, but that April 26th performance felt more like a Dark Star when it came to the improv parts.

I remember the opening show had a great one, split into a 19 minute first segment and an 8 minute second segment; the 8 minutes of part 2 is a rock and roll Fest all the way (crank it up) that goes right into Wharf Rat.

I remember the Dead in Denmark on 4/16 was short but awesome. There are two 3 minute segments with Me and My Uncle in between. The first segment is positively unique in that it's little more than Jerry playing the main theme softly while Pigpen adds some cool atmosphere with the B3 and Phil plugs away at the bass. Keith can also be heard playing notes here and there - always a pleasure. Nice transition into Me and My Uncle and then they go full boar Other One for another 3 minutes, where Bobby lays down the verses. The only explanation I can think of for the short performance is that the Truckin' had a 16 minute Jam after it. I guess on stage it was all The Other One to them.

I remember the New Castle show from April 11th is a really good one. The first 15 minutes was a combo of Other One theme music, up-tempo rockin improv, and a nice 5 minute taste of Feeling Groovy. Then they get a little Spacey and atonal, but not for long. Before you know it they're doing "Space Jazz"; I don't know how to explain it other than it sounds like half of them are still in atonal Space mode while the other half pick up a Jazz jam. If I had my musical wits about me, I'd probably say Billy and Phil went Jazz while the remainder stayed lost in Space. But it worked. It was like this gradual emergence from the real outer Space into the atmosphere - pretty bumpy at first, but eventually things smoothed out. Then they finished it off with The Other One reprise and concluding verses. The whole thing rounded out at..... I want to say 25 minutes, and then right into a superb Comes A Time.

And that was one more great thing about this tour. When you listen to it as a whole, yes, there is some repetition, but it's broken up nicely by other elements, like the rarely played Comes a Time, Lovelight, UJB, Dire Wolf, You Win Again, Caution, Sitting on Top, Rockin Pneumonia Hey Bo Diddley, Brown-Eyed Women, etc. And then the longer pieces are full of their own unique moments, which serves to mix it all up and keep things fresh. Great stuff. If Jim ever gets the wayback machine repaired, I'm going to wildly urge them to get St. Stephen, The Eleven, and Bird Song incorporated into a few shows.

Super interesting history. Right on . Saw Marshall Tucker Band in Missoula back in mid 70s with original lineup . Caldwell brothers were formidable. Toy Caldwell played lead with-out a pick. Tommy Caldwell was a great bass player also. Both gone.

... I’m long time fan of the ‘ABB’ as well. The recent ‘Bear’ recordings from the Fillmore East released this past year was a grateful & welcomed release! I don’t listen to them that often any more, I usually get in the mood around late summertime or when around the band would begin their ‘Beacon Run’ ... I remember when the band released their Atlanta Pop Festival performance on CD, man I played that album for months, morning noon & night lol I was captured not only by the bands performance but the “Primo Audio Quality!” I played it proudly and loud...
...I was Dickey Betts guitar roadie for awhile in my younger days! This was around the time he ran in trouble with the law for punching/fighting with his ‘Ol lady’ / wife at the time. We had a gig planed for the next day in Tappan, NY at the long gone ‘Kelly’s’ Pub, now renamed and different owner. We didn’t know if we would make it because of an arrest warrant but in the end the show went on! The Marshall Tucker band Opened for Dickey Betts and they gave the crowd a primo performance! I was in charge of Dickey Betts 6 different guitars, on stage left , just a few feet away from Dickey so I could hand off his different arsenal of instruments and Cold Beer! Very Cold Beer lol if it wasn’t cold enough Dickey would just toss them into the crowd, sometimes unopened and others with a swig missing lol ha ha lol, by mid-set my left was so numb & cold by dig’n deep inside what was a garbage can turned into a giant cooler filled with Budweiser/Coor’s beer & ICE! Lol...Grateful memories from those days. Vassar Clements also came aboard for a ‘Special Treat’ with his infamous fiddle playing, what a concert. I have a soundboard Of this concert in my collection. Haven’t listened to it in ages, I think it’s time to pull it out of hiding and give it a listening after all this talk of ABB , thank you All for your ABB posts, got my nose to itch :) 🙏❤️😎

18 hours into the selling out of #30, we have the usual comments on cover art (love it) upping the numbers (sure, whatever) and a juicy conversation on bonus content (it’s gonna be great). So the REALLY important discussion moves on to the Box Set. Have to admit, the PNW from last year has dropped in my rotation. I have a bit of buyer’s remorse as the design and art of the box are gorgeous, but I don’t sit and look at it. Here’s hoping for a lean, music focused set with a bit less flourish. Are we looking at a Greek anthology-5 shows from different runs over the years? Or maybe a midnight sun 80 mini box (called for many times over the years) or maybe Fall 80. What tours have not been heavily mined? I love Spring 71, but much of this ground has been covered. I just failed the robot test (again) time to go back to lurking.

If precedence is any indication on DP's best release throughout a given year, 1-2-70 will be the winner hands down. Anything from 1970 in an official release is always highly sought after to my already over-blown GD collection. This was also a decent period for singing. Dark*-Stephen-11-Lovelight, enough said, done. (TIFTOO bonus)

Please stop sending me emails for an item that is "out of stock". What's the point? You have done this many times, I get an offer for the latest release and as soon as I click order it tells me out of stock. Either stop sending me "out of stock" offers or make more copies.

Happy Friday good people!

4/19/82: “woooooohooooooohoooo, never more.....” happy anniversary Jim. I believe you stated this was your first show? Dam, what a dewsy!

WELCOME BACK; glad to see so many folks drop in that we haven’t seen in a while, especially hippie chick picking up right where she left off.....how’s things from the other side? Now if only Bolo was feeling up for the party......and we hope Docs at least lurking?

VARIABLE FORMATS; am I the only one intrigued by Dave’s seaside carrot comments about this year seeing other formats etc? Does that mean different media, like video? or perhaps they’ve finally listened to us and are going to start different kinds of series besides Dave’s? Hurry up, some of us could die anyday now lol.
Perhaps like Kayak guy used to lobby for, or some of us are ready for lower shelf stuff so we can get the post reel stuff out? (In addition to the more formal, predominantly 70s reel to reel sources)......dammit, inquiring minds wanta know!

Vguy; gotta be lovin’ it. All this great music coming out, Phil coming to town, and his boys are skating up a storm!

I'd love to see a '69 Box Set release to complement the Fillmore West box. Ideally the Ark shows or an Avalon-run anthology. But with this DaP 30 and the Aoxomoxoa 50th Avalon excerpts (2nd disc) I doubt we'll see that this year.

I'm thinking that it'll probably be a Brent-era box from '79 or '84

Rip 'n' burn doesn't mean you lose the HDCD encoding. Similarly the Download series were HDCD encoded. You could copy the file and it would still maintain the HDCD encoding. It is an integral part of the digital file and cannot be undone or lost. Luckily.

Ha.. right.. "Select the pictures that contain blotter art."

Ouroborous, yes.. 4/19/82.. my first show. I had no idea what I was getting into and how it would change my life. So much fun and a wild night.

About a week and a half until the better part of two shows land in our mailboxes. I have to admit.. I have not done a deep dive into these two shows, they will almost be new to me.

What are you all doing, what are you listening to?

Bought it
Couldn't help myself. Pacific Northwest one was pretty good quality so I figured this would be to.

I haven't been this psyched up for a release in quite some time. And that's saying something because I was pretty stoked for the swing Auditorium show. I've been hoping for something like the Dick's Picks 16 set list for a while, like I forget who mentioned it, but it has a good mixture of the Primal dead and the new stuff. Am I as excited as hippychick? Yes I am. .... yes I am. Hippychick if you ever want to Rendezvous and listen to some records, I have a good collection.

Blew through Beatclub. Damn fine TOO, absolute highlight film material.

And now I'm up to Rockin' The Rhein. Definitely top 10 E72 for me, and my first Dark Star. DS part II has o once in a Deadtime jam that I enjoy quite an bit. One of the better PITB is here too. My favorite Sugar Magnolia, which is the song and version that reeled me into the Dead Zone for life. Wharf Rat is top 2.

Since it is the 50th anniversary of Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead and the Ark shows, I concur it is High Time to give those the Plangent and Norman treatments. And then I hope Dave's wording of multiple formats portends a video release of some sort, and that 2/28/69 is the November Black Friday release.

I ordered the cd of the Warfield, had a chance to snag the record, but figured the cd better suited me for this release, as I'd probably leave the vinyl sealed. But am looking forward to the cd, when it comes. Would've picked up at the record store, but he didn't get any copies of the cd, he tried ordering, but got shut out, too. I had no interest in the Sage and Spirit. The best thing about it, and motivating factor for everybody I heard from was the artwork, which is great, but the choices are odd, and to use one of the last Jack Straws that Bob sang lead solo on, when there are so many far superior versions from which to choose where Jerry sang lead as well. My only purchase ended up being The Ramones NYE 1979, which I have yet to open, but am looking forward to this sure to be explosive performance that was followed by a screening of the cult classic Rock n Roll High School featuring everybody's favorite punks. The show features Do You Wanna Dance the Bobby Freeman early rock hit that David Nelson and Sara Garcia both say Jerry played on, though wikipedia disuptes it as rumor. I'd think David Nelson and Jerry's first wife would have a good idea of that being a fact, probably hearing it from Jerry himself. The solo is nothing fancy at all, very rudimentary, but gets the job done like Luther Perkins on Folsom Prison Blues and many others, can't seeing Jerry just emptily bragging that he did that, since Johnny Ramone probably was able to copy it note for note on this show. Anyway, can't wait for a great chance to blast that in the living room. I'll be on my 10th listen of DaP 30 by then probably. :)

I liken speculation about incoming Dead releases to the NFL experience. Wake me when the regular season kicks off, and when the CD arrives in my mailbox. Past listens: Paris Combo, 5; Dead & Co. 6/21/16 Saratoga; Black Sabbath, 13; R.E.M., Document; Grateful Dead 12/12/78 Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami. Go Avs! \m/

....is making me wanting to bust out Thelma. Snagged that bonus disc tee, which in my opinion, is still the best cover art yet. Wore the hell out of it when new, so it's already showing signs of wear. Rarely bust it out these daze. On the fence with the DaP 30 tee. We'll see.... Happy 4.20 everyone. I rarely wake and bake, but may make an exception tomorrow.
....what have I been listening to lately Jim? Hockey. Lots of hockey.

Been laying off the Pig for a sort of sonic purge in anticipation of this one! Super stoked for this one and we get TC too.
Last 5:
- Dicks 13 - '81 Nassau - love this one - dozed off last night with the headphones to a sweet He's Gone - woke 5 minutes later to a swarm of bees as Jerry went nuts with Caution/Spanish Jam- LOL. Had to pull em off and pick-it up again today. That Jam out of Drums is pretty cool, into a short but great Hammond B3 heavy TOO.
- Sons of Champlin - Secret - Live from 2002 - high energy, great recording , Rooftop, Get High....love me some vibraphone solos , especially when enhanced! Mic Gillette (TOP) and Tom Saviano on horns
- PNW 5-17-74 Vancouver - great show - WOS is so frickin clean and clear - Loose Lucy is super funky, China-Rider, Truckin' into Nobodys' Fault - love the traditional blues - into Eyes into China Doll - phew
- Dicks 6 - '83 - Hartford - discs 2 & 3 - one of my favorite Scarlet-Fires - Spanish Jam, Stella
- SF Jazz Collective - 1st album, live 2002 - all-star ensemble - songs of Ornette Coleman + original comps is one of their best - Joshua Redman on board - they just released another live album - material from Antonio Carlos Jobim + original compositions waiting to get into this one. SF Jazz Center is a fantastic venue - small = no bad seats with great sound.

I don't post much but check in and glad to see the community going strong. I'm not an old tape trader, just old, and I feel I've been standing on the shoulders or is it listening in at the ears of all you heads that make the call for your favorite shows - I had never heard Swing '77 - great call - awesome show!! I've started dipping into the archives for other shows you'all call for - lots of great stuff still to be Normanized! Keep 'em coming - Thanks !!

adjective
1. offensively displaying or intended to arouse sexual desire.
2. smooth and slippery with oil or a similar substance.

Keithfan, if that was really you in the picture you posted the other night, then I would be more than pleased for you to show me your record collection. I don't have any records to bring over, but I'd be equally pleased to show you where I'm feeling lubricious this morning.

Hard to know how many copies of the Warfield CD were available in various markets. Total was allegedly 6000. What is certain is that some were made in the US and some were made in Europe. The European version has the barcode number as the catalog number on the spine of the sleeve and on the discs themselves. Made in the EU is also printed everywhere. At the clear centre of the discs is the name of the plant that made 'em. Not Mexico! How many European copies were made and how many US copies is something we shall never know. 4000 US + 2000 European?

I concur Vguy, that was the best cover art so far and that shirt was pretty nice. I bought 2 and gave one as a gift, now if you all don't think that capitalism is all that bad, the guy I gifted it to kept it till they were sold out, then he put it up on ebay unopened, he got 80.00 bucks for it, do you believe that? Not that I'm recommending we all order extras to sell on the secondary market, but that's a tidy bit of profit for holding on to a t shirt for about 3 months. I will purchase a couple this time also, just to have it and I think I will keep both of them. Just goes to show, you don't never know, but the limited edition stuff sells if that's your bag.
Hippiechick, I do believe the dark star on the upcoming release will get us all moist, sans lube :)

the family was all asleep by 9:30 or so and the phillies were playing a late game @colorado. I settled into my chair, put the game on mute, slipped on some headphones and listened to the 2 new acoustic sets from 10/9 and 10/10/80.

After that I put on the bulk of the 10/23/80 acoustic set from the expanded reckoning release. After a long week, it was as relaxing a Friday night as I could remember (despite the phillies blowing it in the 12th inning).

hope everyone has a peaceful weekend.

Recently was fortunate to snag a copy of Dave’s 19 (1/23& p/o 24/70 and finally gave 1/23 a whirl last night. Besides a couple hiccups in the first, what a show. We get TOO and the DS>>SS>>LL, and what a beautifully weird Dark Star that was! Only thing missing was an Eleven, ok perhaps a Caution if we’re being greedy: )
Thinking I’m going to have to find time for all this early 70 stuff; DaP 30 1/2 & 3, DaP 19 1/23&24, DPs 4 2/13&14, 30 trips 4/15, 4/18, DPs 8 5/2, RT v3, #3 5/15, and perhaps a little festival express for dessert!
Another great transitional era I had not dug into much...really like the late 69 into early 70 stretch, kinda reminds me of the late 76 Cow palace- Swing early 77 shift...

...I just wrote the intire list of Cover Songs in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire and tried to post it for you all to read but deleted it by accident. I’m on a phone, no computer, it took me a while to do, I’m not going to do it All over again much to hard for this aging Deadhead. I’m sorry. Maybe some else who has a computer can post it for everyone to read... peace be with you all! 🙏❤️😎💐
Ps - don’t forget “arrangements “ 😉✌️
