    Who's up for a revolutionary evolutionary ride? DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 1/2/70 captures the Grateful Dead as they make their first foray from the experimental 60s into their early 70s acoustic Americana period. Yes, this one is a little bit country and a little bit (psychedelic) rock and roll.

    When the "Magnificent Seven" - Pigpen on percussion, T.C. on keys - first took the stage on 1/2/70, evidence was clear that the trip was about to take a turn. From their western wears to the twang in Jerry’s “broken-string blues,” it appeared they'd brought the Bakersfield sound to the Big Apple. They worked through much of what would become Workingman's Dead, stunning the crowd with laid-back numbers like "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," and "Black Peter." Just the same, they satisfied 60s stalwarts with magical versions of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," and "That's It For The Other One." Sonic alchemy, indeed!

    DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, ​New York 1/2/70 has been rounded out with a bit of 1/3/70 (the subscribers-only bonus disc features the bulk of 1/3/70). It was recorded by the great Owsley "Bear" Stanley and has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

    Bummer, yea, that would haunt me for sure. Sorta understandable considering the context. Though did you hitch from Colorado and back? 1) good lord that must’ve been something in itself, and 2) if so, why go all that way for one show?
    Personally, only a couple that I missed that I really regret;
    10/26/89; had tix for both Miami shows and Philly, but couldn't swing Miami after guerrilla Hampton run, so sold Miami tix, Doooooo! Missing that Dark Star will always bum me out.
    3/26/88: only show I ever went to that I didn’t get in. So missed out double that night; not only the show with the only Stir It Up (hell any Hampton show I was at was a good one, perhaps my favorite indoor venue!), but also the great party in the lot across the street....I guess they had decent speakers set up and Healy was doing the FM thing then, so I heard it was quite the party! We had gone to visit friends staying elsewhere that also were shut out and when we returned to the Red Roof and heard we missed out AGAIN! we were truly bummed. That didn’t last long as the next night was “primo”...
    Had to sell tix to 6/28/88 off of that tour as I had to have upper GI and testing done at hospital, long strange saga there...sold tix to the 87 Wooooster shows, but we had done 8 previous and were, burnt, sorta broke, and honestly just not feeling it that much. Perhaps another 3 or 4 that I “should of” but that’s easy to say now, situationally, back then there were reasons though. But really just the 2 Miami and Hampton that I will always regret!

    73 RFK box: suppose Dead only sets would be ok if part of some other shows from that tour?
    Hell they could throw in that third set as a bonus if they ever do a Watkins Glen Box...(since you’d think that would entail the same logistical/legal BS)
    Don’t see a 73 Box in the near future though since their still selling PNW boxes....

    Dave’s 31 would be nice if he gave us that last unreleased 74 DS!

    Speaking of Boxes....WTF? You guys trying to kill us, we’re old and could die soon, where’s that box 😉

    No doubt, you were young at a great time, musically, geographically, and pharmaceutically. In 1973 I was 16, but situated in the unlovely North West of England, with a soundtrack of Black Sabbath and Hawkwind . And washed down with great quantities of Newcastle Brown Ale. I wouldn't discover anything more exotic until I was 18. Still...being 16.....discovering live music....rock n' roll of whatever stripe-the walls of the city surely shake. Now as then.

    i missed 6/26/94 after a lame-ass, wtf, 115 degrees Fahrenheit show on 6/25/94

    not nearly as comparable as 6/10/73. but hearing 6/26/94 on tape...I really wish that had been played on 6/25/94.

    I didn't get on the bus until 1982 (age 18), so I missed a whole lotta great shows.

    If that subject line isn't click bait, I'm not a fisherman... (In fact, I'm generally not.) Anyhoo, there was a really good article (can't find the link, natch) on the efforts to release this show. As I recall, about five years ago, the GD had a package in which the best of both GD and ABB's performances from 6-9-73, 6-10-73, 7-27-73 and 7-28-73 were put together in a box set for sale. But it got the kibosh; probably too many decision makers (too many splits on the $$) and, one suspects, legalities. Personally, though I'd prefer all the shows intact, if it's nothing or a selection, I'd go with the highlights box.

    As to that tragedy... it's real, though the pain is somewhat muted at this point, 46 years later. 9 June 1973 was my second GD show. Me and a buddy caught a ride to DC Saturday morning and the GD opened, played all afternoon. We dosed. Temperatures probably 100 degrees. Little access to water. (A few water fountains for 20,000 people.) We retired to the shade of the stadium seats for the ABB, quite roasted in at least two senses of that word. The ABB came out and due to popping another blotter and the seats and shade and purple lights (and, oh yeah, very powerful music), the ABB just blew us (and the GD that afternoon) away. Must have been easier to get it on with the temperatures dropping and the mood picking up among the dusty denizens that had braved the sun for the GD. We slept on the grass outside the stadium that night, just t-shirts and jeans. Got up and with literally nothing in our pockets -- not a nickel, not a blotter, no nada -- we hitchhiked home. My godfather from Denver was visiting Sunday night (I loved him) and I had school the next day. Got fired from the HS varsity tennis team because I went to the GD show instead of a team party. (That was easy...) Mostly it was because we were 15 years old, penniless, exhausted, played out, with no conceivable plan for getting a ticket, eating, surviving. We'd never conceive of hanging out, asking for a free ticket. I'm still that way.

    Yes, you're reading the subtext correctly. We left on Sunday morning and that night the GD played an iconic set. Er, okay, three effin' iconic sets. I missed it.

    This type of experience, in a very small way, must have been common in those days. And I think the universality of my own experience among Deadheads led to the surge in the multi-night attendance strategy -- catch 'em all, cuz you never know when a hot one is coming. Still, I went on to catch Watkins Glen close up, two more nights of GD/The Band mere days later. (We learned mighty quick in those days.) And another GD show that September.

    I'll say this as a veteran, but with a little mischief in mind: six 1973 shows are worth 100 1980s shows, in terms of the "early" experience: the purity of the Purple Dragon, the expansive '73 sound, the band's evolution, the crowds, my youth. I never racked up big show numbers because how could that possibly matter? To me, the experience and what I learned would play out over years to come and that's what mattered.

    Still, we made sure we were onboard by '72, up front for Watkins Glen, and in attendance for every Red Rocks show -- not for the numbers, but if you live 20 minutes away, what the hell else are you going to do on a night when the GD are playing and all your friends are there? You go!

    These days the best I can do in terms of stamina of mind/soul is a two-nighter of Derek & Susan at the Rocks. (Yes! Only six weeks away!) As I age, I have growing crowd-tolerance issues, especially with the chattering youngsters, the phones, etc. OMG, I've entered the "Get Off M Lawn" zone!!

    Oh, what the hell. I started at 13 on live music with The Chambers Brothers in 1970 or '71, went on to the Byrds, New York Rock 'n Roll Ensemble, GD, ABB, The Band, Red Rocks in 1974, Clapton, Freddie King, BB King, Albert King, Jer band, Roy Buchanan, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Hunter... a zillion more, all in the '70s. No wonder I'm a bit crisp and cranky!

    So I missed one of the most iconic GD shows ever, one that opened with "Morning Dew." Big deal.

    One of my favorite years of the Grateful Dead Performances...One word, ‘Oakland’, says it all.
    Boxset! Primo. Most welcomed and have been waiting for ages to be packaged & released with all it’s grateful glory! A place the Dead later called “their second Home”! Just think about what that word means my brothers & sisters, HOME. I can write an essay on my beliefs of what HOME really means but I’ve been told and asked by some members that I “Shouldn’t”and “Don’t” write long posts, so I’ll end my message here my brothers and sisters.
    Enjoyed ‘Dicks Picks #7, September 1974 early this morning. Recorded by Bill Candelario on September 9th,10th and 11th, 1974 at Alexandra Palace in London, England. Love it! Audio Mix is very grateful indeed, on my system. 😉 enjoyed every minute!

    *been listening to ‘Road Trips Volume 3 Number 1’ CD release. The ninth in the Dead’s "Road Trips" series, it was recorded on December 28th 1979, at the Oakland Auditorium in Oakland, California, and contains the complete performance. The bonus disc included with some copies of the album was recorded two nights later, on December 30th 1979, at the same venue. The album was released in 2009, I cant beive it’s been that long! Bring on some More 1979 !
    Another “Primo” show from this run of concerts is ‘Dick's Picks Volume 5’, It was recorded on December 26, 1979 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena. It was also the first release of a full concert to feature my man, keyboardist, Brent Mydland! And if that’s not good enough for some folks, we are lucky enough to have ‘Betty Cantor-Jackson’s’ recording of the Grateful Dead’s performance in the “Vault” and released to fans. This show has a Killer Setlist with an impressive and fun performance of ‘Shakedown Street’ for one of the encore songs, the other being ‘Uncle Johns Band’, another primo version of this beloved song! All this talk of Dicks Picks 5 has got my blood flowing, I know what I’m listing to next,lol. 😉 Sorry for the long post folks, take care & Rock On!

    Would it be sacrilegious to suggest that they release it without the 3rd set, which was the only set, as far as I am aware, visited by Merl Saunders and members of the Allmans? Just going off what MLB said-if the logistics of releasing this show prove too difficult due to guests involvement, then maybe it would be better to release the portion of the show which didn't involve them. I accept that it wouldn't be ideal-but the heart of the set, for me, lies in the first two sets anyway.

    1984 the Hog Farm had a camp a mile from Red Rocks. How do I spell Wilde. 1985 I went to the Chief Hosa campground. I met the very awesome gals from Pine Ridge Rez with the graffiti Ford pick-up truck. So I wrote on the truck “see you at the League for Spiritual Discovery picnic, 8/8/88.

    I hear you MLB.. and I sort of agree with you. But the other side of the coin is this is one of the truly great shows left in the cannon and most of the Allmans (and Merl) and previous managers, etc. have already passed.

    You have valid points and I always felt the same way, but like butter on a hot summer day I am beginning to soften. I think it's not if this will get released, it's when. I bet for every person that is hanging out there asking for different terms or a greater percentage there are three saying hell yes.. I will take what is "fair" but get this thing released so I can get something?

    Not if but when.. that's my position. It will happen, the red sea will be parted and it will get released. That's my opinion, as always I reserve the right to be belly-floppin' off the high dive wrong.

18 hours into the selling out of #30, we have the usual comments on cover art (love it) upping the numbers (sure, whatever) and a juicy conversation on bonus content (it’s gonna be great). So the REALLY important discussion moves on to the Box Set. Have to admit, the PNW from last year has dropped in my rotation. I have a bit of buyer’s remorse as the design and art of the box are gorgeous, but I don’t sit and look at it. Here’s hoping for a lean, music focused set with a bit less flourish. Are we looking at a Greek anthology-5 shows from different runs over the years? Or maybe a midnight sun 80 mini box (called for many times over the years) or maybe Fall 80. What tours have not been heavily mined? I love Spring 71, but much of this ground has been covered. I just failed the robot test (again) time to go back to lurking.

If precedence is any indication on DP's best release throughout a given year, 1-2-70 will be the winner hands down. Anything from 1970 in an official release is always highly sought after to my already over-blown GD collection. This was also a decent period for singing. Dark*-Stephen-11-Lovelight, enough said, done. (TIFTOO bonus)

Please stop sending me emails for an item that is "out of stock". What's the point? You have done this many times, I get an offer for the latest release and as soon as I click order it tells me out of stock. Either stop sending me "out of stock" offers or make more copies.

4/19/82: “woooooohooooooohoooo, never more.....” happy anniversary Jim. I believe you stated this was your first show? Dam, what a dewsy!

WELCOME BACK; glad to see so many folks drop in that we haven’t seen in a while, especially hippie chick picking up right where she left off.....how’s things from the other side? Now if only Bolo was feeling up for the party......and we hope Docs at least lurking?

VARIABLE FORMATS; am I the only one intrigued by Dave’s seaside carrot comments about this year seeing other formats etc? Does that mean different media, like video? or perhaps they’ve finally listened to us and are going to start different kinds of series besides Dave’s? Hurry up, some of us could die anyday now lol.
Perhaps like Kayak guy used to lobby for, or some of us are ready for lower shelf stuff so we can get the post reel stuff out? (In addition to the more formal, predominantly 70s reel to reel sources)......dammit, inquiring minds wanta know!

come on guys...out of stock/limited edition?? I know you want to move product fast, but this is standard corporate stuff...anyone can borrow a copy and download...I appreciated and still love the HDCD aspect of all Dead releases...(I have two ARCAM CD23 players)...If I cant buy from you HDCD, I will borrow from my buddy and import but will lose HDCD in the process. I would gladly pay the $30and get the HDCD vs free from friend. It ain't even 4/20 and this is sold out??...cmon...release another 20,000 and never get rid of HDCD..thanks

I'd love to see a '69 Box Set release to complement the Fillmore West box. Ideally the Ark shows or an Avalon-run anthology. But with this DaP 30 and the Aoxomoxoa 50th Avalon excerpts (2nd disc) I doubt we'll see that this year.

I'm thinking that it'll probably be a Brent-era box from '79 or '84

Rip 'n' burn doesn't mean you lose the HDCD encoding. Similarly the Download series were HDCD encoded. You could copy the file and it would still maintain the HDCD encoding. It is an integral part of the digital file and cannot be undone or lost. Luckily.

I've gotta say I kinda love the idea of Deadhead Captcha. It seems like some Head would have developed such a thing, especially given how many of us are in tech. If anybody has any info I'd love to hear it, though I have no idea what's going to turn out to work in real life...

Ouroborous, yes.. 4/19/82.. my first show. I had no idea what I was getting into and how it would change my life. So much fun and a wild night.

About a week and a half until the better part of two shows land in our mailboxes. I have to admit.. I have not done a deep dive into these two shows, they will almost be new to me.

What are you all doing, what are you listening to?

Couldn't help myself. Pacific Northwest one was pretty good quality so I figured this would be to.

I haven't been this psyched up for a release in quite some time. And that's saying something because I was pretty stoked for the swing Auditorium show. I've been hoping for something like the Dick's Picks 16 set list for a while, like I forget who mentioned it, but it has a good mixture of the Primal dead and the new stuff. Am I as excited as hippychick? Yes I am. .... yes I am. Hippychick if you ever want to Rendezvous and listen to some records, I have a good collection.

Blew through Beatclub. Damn fine TOO, absolute highlight film material.

And now I'm up to Rockin' The Rhein. Definitely top 10 E72 for me, and my first Dark Star. DS part II has o once in a Deadtime jam that I enjoy quite an bit. One of the better PITB is here too. My favorite Sugar Magnolia, which is the song and version that reeled me into the Dead Zone for life. Wharf Rat is top 2.

Since it is the 50th anniversary of Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead and the Ark shows, I concur it is High Time to give those the Plangent and Norman treatments. And then I hope Dave's wording of multiple formats portends a video release of some sort, and that 2/28/69 is the November Black Friday release.

I ordered the cd of the Warfield, had a chance to snag the record, but figured the cd better suited me for this release, as I'd probably leave the vinyl sealed. But am looking forward to the cd, when it comes. Would've picked up at the record store, but he didn't get any copies of the cd, he tried ordering, but got shut out, too. I had no interest in the Sage and Spirit. The best thing about it, and motivating factor for everybody I heard from was the artwork, which is great, but the choices are odd, and to use one of the last Jack Straws that Bob sang lead solo on, when there are so many far superior versions from which to choose where Jerry sang lead as well. My only purchase ended up being The Ramones NYE 1979, which I have yet to open, but am looking forward to this sure to be explosive performance that was followed by a screening of the cult classic Rock n Roll High School featuring everybody's favorite punks. The show features Do You Wanna Dance the Bobby Freeman early rock hit that David Nelson and Sara Garcia both say Jerry played on, though wikipedia disuptes it as rumor. I'd think David Nelson and Jerry's first wife would have a good idea of that being a fact, probably hearing it from Jerry himself. The solo is nothing fancy at all, very rudimentary, but gets the job done like Luther Perkins on Folsom Prison Blues and many others, can't seeing Jerry just emptily bragging that he did that, since Johnny Ramone probably was able to copy it note for note on this show. Anyway, can't wait for a great chance to blast that in the living room. I'll be on my 10th listen of DaP 30 by then probably. :)

I liken speculation about incoming Dead releases to the NFL experience. Wake me when the regular season kicks off, and when the CD arrives in my mailbox. Past listens: Paris Combo, 5; Dead & Co. 6/21/16 Saratoga; Black Sabbath, 13; R.E.M., Document; Grateful Dead 12/12/78 Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami. Go Avs! \m/

....is making me wanting to bust out Thelma. Snagged that bonus disc tee, which in my opinion, is still the best cover art yet. Wore the hell out of it when new, so it's already showing signs of wear. Rarely bust it out these daze. On the fence with the DaP 30 tee. We'll see.... Happy 4.20 everyone. I rarely wake and bake, but may make an exception tomorrow.
....what have I been listening to lately Jim? Hockey. Lots of hockey.

Had to pull em off and pick-it up again today. That Jam out of Drums is pretty cool, into a short but great Hammond B3 heavy TOO.
- Sons of Champlin - Secret - Live from 2002 - high energy, great recording , Rooftop, Get High....love me some vibraphone solos , especially when enhanced! Mic Gillette (TOP) and Tom Saviano on horns
- PNW 5-17-74 Vancouver - great show - WOS is so frickin clean and clear - Loose Lucy is super funky, China-Rider, Truckin' into Nobodys' Fault - love the traditional blues - into Eyes into China Doll - phew
- Dicks 6 - '83 - Hartford - discs 2 & 3 - one of my favorite Scarlet-Fires - Spanish Jam, Stella
- SF Jazz Collective - 1st album, live 2002 - all-star ensemble - songs of Ornette Coleman + original comps is one of their best - Joshua Redman on board - they just released another live album - material from Antonio Carlos Jobim + original compositions waiting to get into this one. SF Jazz Center is a fantastic venue - small = no bad seats with great sound.

I don't post much but check in and glad to see the community going strong. I'm not an old tape trader, just old, and I feel I've been standing on the shoulders or is it listening in at the ears of all you heads that make the call for your favorite shows - I had never heard Swing '77 - great call - awesome show!! I've started dipping into the archives for other shows you'all call for - lots of great stuff still to be Normanized! Keep 'em coming - Thanks !!

Hard to know how many copies of the Warfield CD were available in various markets. Total was allegedly 6000. What is certain is that some were made in the US and some were made in Europe. The European version has the barcode number as the catalog number on the spine of the sleeve and on the discs themselves. Made in the EU is also printed everywhere. At the clear centre of the discs is the name of the plant that made 'em. Not Mexico! How many European copies were made and how many US copies is something we shall never know. 4000 US + 2000 European?

I concur Vguy, that was the best cover art so far and that shirt was pretty nice. I bought 2 and gave one as a gift, now if you all don't think that capitalism is all that bad, the guy I gifted it to kept it till they were sold out, then he put it up on ebay unopened, he got 80.00 bucks for it, do you believe that? Not that I'm recommending we all order extras to sell on the secondary market, but that's a tidy bit of profit for holding on to a t shirt for about 3 months. I will purchase a couple this time also, just to have it and I think I will keep both of them. Just goes to show, you don't never know, but the limited edition stuff sells if that's your bag.
Hippiechick, I do believe the dark star on the upcoming release will get us all moist, sans lube :)

the family was all asleep by 9:30 or so and the phillies were playing a late game @colorado. I settled into my chair, put the game on mute, slipped on some headphones and listened to the 2 new acoustic sets from 10/9 and 10/10/80.

After that I put on the bulk of the 10/23/80 acoustic set from the expanded reckoning release. After a long week, it was as relaxing a Friday night as I could remember (despite the phillies blowing it in the 12th inning).

hope everyone has a peaceful weekend.

Was that dating or flirting? I’m old and forgot what all that was like.....and certainly know nothing about this online stuff ; )

Recently was fortunate to snag a copy of Dave’s 19 (1/23& p/o 24/70 and finally gave 1/23 a whirl last night. Besides a couple hiccups in the first, what a show. We get TOO and the DS>>SS>>LL, and what a beautifully weird Dark Star that was! Only thing missing was an Eleven, ok perhaps a Caution if we’re being greedy: )
Thinking I’m going to have to find time for all this early 70 stuff; DaP 30 1/2 & 3, DaP 19 1/23&24, DPs 4 2/13&14, 30 trips 4/15, 4/18, DPs 8 5/2, RT v3, #3 5/15, and perhaps a little festival express for dessert!
Another great transitional era I had not dug into much...really like the late 69 into early 70 stretch, kinda reminds me of the late 76 Cow palace- Swing early 77 shift...

Maybe we just need a new thread. Something like "avatar's I want to bang",,, something subtle like that.

...Are not yet known. They have to be either Dead originals or public domain according to Dave last year. I put up a tracklist that I thought was a good bet earlier in this thread. Wish more responses were visible per page. But it is what it is. The only hint was Dave said Alligator would be on it, so that sequence is about 23 minutes.
