Good morning dead people....if you haven’t ordered your copy of deadhead stories, I would do so quickly. As of yesterday there were only 60 copies left. It is very well done, with 11x8.5 color, and over 300 pages of awesome stories. Got mine on last Monday and already 1/3 of the way through. By far my favorite book about the Dead so far. There is one Grate story about the 2nd group to get in line for The Closing of Winterland...5 days early! By the time the show started the line was around the block!!!!!

Link to deadhead stories site to order is here. All proceeds go to Charity.

Great story-thanks. Almost makes me wish I lived in America!

Listening to 7/1/78 from the 1978 box set as I type. This was the one where the Dead played with many other bands as part of "Willie Nelsons Picnic", so its a single set show. But its got some great playing on it. Estimated is the highlight for me-great jamming leading into The Other One. Minimum slide show - it doesn't detract from a great Tennessee Jed, if you factor it out, and actually sounds quite nice and mournful leading out of Playing in the Band. Less is more, as they say. Great Jerry guitar in Wharf Rat, now, too- hey, this show is really alright!

The Buttons, then the stems and caps.... and a three week delay in posting. Thanks to the good, quick thinking folks here at dead.net.. we set up a GoFundMe to get KCJ out of jail and back to work..

Don't mind me, I didn't have time to read your whole post, but I did quickly skim through the text, and having gotten four hours of sleep this week alone, I am quite sure I absorbed the entirety of your post:

' ..sorry didn't post, gone for three and a half weeks, brought my newbe brother in law to a show against his wife's best wishes, dosed him.. then got him stoned.. and there was nothing left to drink but hard liquor and IPA's.. what's a guy to do? '

It was Sixtus and his grower/attorney friend Cosmic Charlie that first come through with the plan that freed the J' family from the calamity that was sure to catch up to them. In the end, a clear case of mistaken identity.

    Tragedy narrowly averted.

Great tale, KCJ.. good to hear you had fun and escaped the long arm of the law (meaning your sister in law in this case).

In all honesty.. I really wanted to go to the Gorge this year (and perhaps Folsom Field as a close second), but the timing and ticket prices worked against me. Still, I love the PNW.. a truly great spot in the planet blue I plan to revisit as often as I can.

    Glad it all worked out.

Edit: Did nothing but art (woodworking, live in a 115 year old Victorian - it ever ends) and a moderate bike ride today.. but listened to the Good Ole GD the whole while. Started at 7 am with 06/24/90 Autzen Stadium Eugene, OR which only fueled more high intensity GD.. so for the bike ride and table saw amped it up with 10/12/84 and 9/18/87 from 30 trips. Good golly. I realize 30 trips got mixed reviews.. but they are just wrong, it's pretty freaking awesome when an 84 and 87 show can get someone so amped up. Perhaps not my best purchase but, well.. No Regrets. Diplomatic enough?

Back to your previously scheduled June '74 GD.

Tales from The Gorge, A Dead Head Story (part 1)

Hey now Dead Rockers......first let me apologize for my long absence. Landed back here in KC a week ago today at 4am, fresh from a 10 day trip to the beautiful PNW....back to work last week and then Friday a very large tree uprooted from our back yard and fell on our power lines, so we have been without power and internet for most of the past weekend, but onward!!!!

Although I have been only lurking here the last few weeks, I have still been keeping up and appreciate the call (Oroborous) for my return......and so now that I have taken the opportunity to get everything exactly perfect, let my inspiration flow till my tale is told and done........

Me, Mrs. Casey, and her brother (brother in law-BIL), all caught the red-eye into Seattle from KC on the night of June 6th. By the time we scooped up our bags and negotiated the rental car lines it was 2:30am. We checked into a blue light cheap hotel there by Sea-Tac that I had booked months before in preparation for our drive to the Gorge for two nights of Dead & Company. In the morning BIL and I hit the nearest dispensary to load up on some legal party favors while my wife finished getting ready to go.

Now I’ve been to Colorado since legalization, but the “Cannabis Clinic” we found was on a different level than anything I’ve experienced before. There were a lot of options and we took full advantage., and the bud tenders were of course very helpful…..
“What would you recommend for pre-rolls”, I say…..
”Do you like Indica or Sativa”, she asks,
    “both”, I answer!
    “Hash Infused”?
    “Sure that sounds Grate”!
Went through a similar process with some other goodies, and out we came 30 minutes later with 4 tubes of pre-rolls (hash infused and also Willie’s Reserve), a couple grams of flower, 2 oil cartridges, a new pen (Seattle Seahawks – 12th Strain branded - for the oil), a couple packs of chewable candies, and last but not least, a plastic syringe filled with some hashy goo which we found to be very applicable to the candies….
“Be careful with this she said”, “Only rice grain size portions”…..
“Sure, no problem” I say…….(smile, smile, smile), out we go, back to pick up the Mrs., sharing candies along the way, and on to our hotel at Moses Lake about 40 minutes east of The Gorge.

After stopping for lunch, and a very scenic 3 hour drive through the mountains and over The Columbia River (wow, what a site), we rolled into Moses Lake about 1:00pm. First stop….the liquor store, to load up on IPA for me, Jack Daniels for BIL & wine for the Mrs., a bag of ice, plus a disposable cooler if we could find one. I asked the liquor store dude if he had any styrofoam coolers, but no dice. Payed for everything else and walked out…..then, just as we were loading up I spotted some old buckets that someone had piled up…looked like trash in front of the store….and just like that we had a cooler  Time to check in to the room

Ok, for those who already know the background story on my choice of accommodations, I apologize, but I think for context it bears repeating. I planned this Dead & Co tour stop in connection with my in-laws 40th Anniversary Celebration to be held on the Oregon Coast the following weekend (what timing….couldn’t believe my luck). I would have preferred to camp, and my wife agreed to do so, but she is no Deadhead, or camper for that matter, and so she only agreed to one night. I of course wanted to see both nights, and BIL also wanted to come to a show, so in compromise, I offered to purchase the VIP package which included 2 tickets to each show, 2 nights hotel accommodation in Moses Lake, plus bus ride to and from each show. Needless to say, she agreed, and so here were leaving the liquor store and on our way to the hotel.
When we get there and walk into the lobby it is a quarter till 2:00 and there are already 25-30 Heads milling around in the lobby. The guy at the desk tells me that they are all waiting for the ticket packages that would be handed out at 2:00. First bus to The Gorge leaves at 3:00, 2nd bus at 4:00……that means BIL and I have 1 hour to check in, get ready, get our tickets/wristbands, and then be across the street to load up for the first bus.

Back in the room we start getting ready and stocking supplies. Gonna be a little nip to the air tonight so I wear some jeans, one of my Courtney Pollock Tie Dye’s, Bolt hat, and my bright green Morning Dew sweatshirt tied around my waist for the later chill. I load up one plastic tube with 4 or 5 pre-rolls, pocketed my oil pen plus cartridge and then grabbed a half a handful of stems and caps that someone had mysteriously packed inside of my zip up shorts pocket that I had stuffed in my checked baggage…...what luck!!! Next we stock our new disposable cooler bucket full of IPA’s, bottle of JD, couple Cokes, and some ice. BIL is in his 30’s, about 10 years my junior and 13 years my wife’s little brother, and so before we go, she makes sure to tell me not to lose him….make sure he gets back OK! Of course, Of course…no worries BIL and I laugh!!!!! Now up to the lobby to grab tickets just before 3:00, and out to the bus….do I have everything? Nope, Oh shit…….I forgot THE BUTTONS!!!

Here’s the background on THE BUTTONS….I think most of y’all know Agent Jeff Smith from our boards here, but if you don’t you should, because he’s one of the coolest Heads around these parts, always quick to share his fine art work of making our Dave’s Pick’s and Box Sets Digital Album covers pop with High Definition detail. Earlier this year, Jeff had helped me acquire some GD digital shows that I was missing from my collection, and in his mail parcel he included a button that he had made for the Dead & Co Boulder shows last summer. After seeing Jeff’s Boulder button, I asked him if he wouldn’t mind designing me a button for the upcoming Gorge trip and he kindly obliged with one of the coolest designs I could have imagined (see my avatar). I ordered 200 of the 2 and ¼ inches in diameter with sparkle background for the shows.

Back to the room…grab 100 of the buttons, run across the street, and then finally after 28 years of being of being a GD fan, I AM ON THE BUS…..which is a fucking Greyhound!

No folks, although we were just a few hundred miles north from where the famed vehicle now rests and rusts, this was no Kesey bus. There was no day-glow graffiti, or Merry Pranksters riding on top. The music was not blaring shows from long past as it should be, nor were there any stray travelers looking to hop aboard. And thank God Cowboy Neal was not at the wheel, because I don’t believe we would have had enough defibrillator machines to account for the carnage. Not surprisingly BIL and I were the only ones on the bus who had thought forward enough to bring a bucket full of beers, and so we sat quietly sipping beers and sucking on our oil pipes and eating edibles, hoping against a last minute ransack by the group of aging hippies on our supplies..

After arriving at the scene/parking lot, and not listening closely to instructions about how to get back to The Bus……we straggled off with beer bucket in hand down the Golden Road (walking path) to the entrance of The Gorge, and things were starting to pick up as we were high steppin’ in to town, it was a rainbow full of sound…..there were fireworks, calliopes and clowns, and everybody was dancing!!!

18 hours into the selling out of #30, we have the usual comments on cover art (love it) upping the numbers (sure, whatever) and a juicy conversation on bonus content (it’s gonna be great). So the REALLY important discussion moves on to the Box Set. Have to admit, the PNW from last year has dropped in my rotation. I have a bit of buyer’s remorse as the design and art of the box are gorgeous, but I don’t sit and look at it. Here’s hoping for a lean, music focused set with a bit less flourish. Are we looking at a Greek anthology-5 shows from different runs over the years? Or maybe a midnight sun 80 mini box (called for many times over the years) or maybe Fall 80. What tours have not been heavily mined? I love Spring 71, but much of this ground has been covered. I just failed the robot test (again) time to go back to lurking.

If precedence is any indication on DP's best release throughout a given year, 1-2-70 will be the winner hands down. Anything from 1970 in an official release is always highly sought after to my already over-blown GD collection. This was also a decent period for singing. Dark*-Stephen-11-Lovelight, enough said, done. (TIFTOO bonus)

Please stop sending me emails for an item that is "out of stock". What's the point? You have done this many times, I get an offer for the latest release and as soon as I click order it tells me out of stock. Either stop sending me "out of stock" offers or make more copies.

Happy Friday good people!

4/19/82: “woooooohooooooohoooo, never more.....” happy anniversary Jim. I believe you stated this was your first show? Dam, what a dewsy!

WELCOME BACK; glad to see so many folks drop in that we haven’t seen in a while, especially hippie chick picking up right where she left off.....how’s things from the other side? Now if only Bolo was feeling up for the party......and we hope Docs at least lurking?

VARIABLE FORMATS; am I the only one intrigued by Dave’s seaside carrot comments about this year seeing other formats etc? Does that mean different media, like video? or perhaps they’ve finally listened to us and are going to start different kinds of series besides Dave’s? Hurry up, some of us could die anyday now lol.
Perhaps like Kayak guy used to lobby for, or some of us are ready for lower shelf stuff so we can get the post reel stuff out? (In addition to the more formal, predominantly 70s reel to reel sources)......dammit, inquiring minds wanta know!

Vguy; gotta be lovin’ it. All this great music coming out, Phil coming to town, and his boys are skating up a storm!

I'd love to see a '69 Box Set release to complement the Fillmore West box. Ideally the Ark shows or an Avalon-run anthology. But with this DaP 30 and the Aoxomoxoa 50th Avalon excerpts (2nd disc) I doubt we'll see that this year.

I'm thinking that it'll probably be a Brent-era box from '79 or '84

Rip 'n' burn doesn't mean you lose the HDCD encoding. Similarly the Download series were HDCD encoded. You could copy the file and it would still maintain the HDCD encoding. It is an integral part of the digital file and cannot be undone or lost. Luckily.

I've gotta say I kinda love the idea of Deadhead Captcha. It seems like some Head would have developed such a thing, especially given how many of us are in tech. If anybody has any info I'd love to hear it, though I have no idea what's going to turn out to work in real life...

Ha.. right.. "Select the pictures that contain blotter art."

Ouroborous, yes.. 4/19/82.. my first show. I had no idea what I was getting into and how it would change my life. So much fun and a wild night.

About a week and a half until the better part of two shows land in our mailboxes. I have to admit.. I have not done a deep dive into these two shows, they will almost be new to me.

What are you all doing, what are you listening to?

Bought it
Couldn't help myself. Pacific Northwest one was pretty good quality so I figured this would be to.

I haven't been this psyched up for a release in quite some time. And that's saying something because I was pretty stoked for the swing Auditorium show. I've been hoping for something like the Dick's Picks 16 set list for a while, like I forget who mentioned it, but it has a good mixture of the Primal dead and the new stuff. Am I as excited as hippychick? Yes I am. .... yes I am. Hippychick if you ever want to Rendezvous and listen to some records, I have a good collection.

Blew through Beatclub. Damn fine TOO, absolute highlight film material.

And now I'm up to Rockin' The Rhein. Definitely top 10 E72 for me, and my first Dark Star. DS part II has o once in a Deadtime jam that I enjoy quite an bit. One of the better PITB is here too. My favorite Sugar Magnolia, which is the song and version that reeled me into the Dead Zone for life. Wharf Rat is top 2.

Since it is the 50th anniversary of Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead and the Ark shows, I concur it is High Time to give those the Plangent and Norman treatments. And then I hope Dave's wording of multiple formats portends a video release of some sort, and that 2/28/69 is the November Black Friday release.

I ordered the cd of the Warfield, had a chance to snag the record, but figured the cd better suited me for this release, as I'd probably leave the vinyl sealed. But am looking forward to the cd, when it comes. Would've picked up at the record store, but he didn't get any copies of the cd, he tried ordering, but got shut out, too. I had no interest in the Sage and Spirit. The best thing about it, and motivating factor for everybody I heard from was the artwork, which is great, but the choices are odd, and to use one of the last Jack Straws that Bob sang lead solo on, when there are so many far superior versions from which to choose where Jerry sang lead as well. My only purchase ended up being The Ramones NYE 1979, which I have yet to open, but am looking forward to this sure to be explosive performance that was followed by a screening of the cult classic Rock n Roll High School featuring everybody's favorite punks. The show features Do You Wanna Dance the Bobby Freeman early rock hit that David Nelson and Sara Garcia both say Jerry played on, though wikipedia disuptes it as rumor. I'd think David Nelson and Jerry's first wife would have a good idea of that being a fact, probably hearing it from Jerry himself. The solo is nothing fancy at all, very rudimentary, but gets the job done like Luther Perkins on Folsom Prison Blues and many others, can't seeing Jerry just emptily bragging that he did that, since Johnny Ramone probably was able to copy it note for note on this show. Anyway, can't wait for a great chance to blast that in the living room. I'll be on my 10th listen of DaP 30 by then probably. :)

I liken speculation about incoming Dead releases to the NFL experience. Wake me when the regular season kicks off, and when the CD arrives in my mailbox. Past listens: Paris Combo, 5; Dead & Co. 6/21/16 Saratoga; Black Sabbath, 13; R.E.M., Document; Grateful Dead 12/12/78 Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami. Go Avs! \m/

....is making me wanting to bust out Thelma. Snagged that bonus disc tee, which in my opinion, is still the best cover art yet. Wore the hell out of it when new, so it's already showing signs of wear. Rarely bust it out these daze. On the fence with the DaP 30 tee. We'll see.... Happy 4.20 everyone. I rarely wake and bake, but may make an exception tomorrow.
....what have I been listening to lately Jim? Hockey. Lots of hockey.

Been laying off the Pig for a sort of sonic purge in anticipation of this one! Super stoked for this one and we get TC too.
Last 5:
- Dicks 13 - '81 Nassau - love this one - dozed off last night with the headphones to a sweet He's Gone - woke 5 minutes later to a swarm of bees as Jerry went nuts with Caution/Spanish Jam- LOL. Had to pull em off and pick-it up again today. That Jam out of Drums is pretty cool, into a short but great Hammond B3 heavy TOO.
- Sons of Champlin - Secret - Live from 2002 - high energy, great recording , Rooftop, Get High....love me some vibraphone solos , especially when enhanced! Mic Gillette (TOP) and Tom Saviano on horns
- PNW 5-17-74 Vancouver - great show - WOS is so frickin clean and clear - Loose Lucy is super funky, China-Rider, Truckin' into Nobodys' Fault - love the traditional blues - into Eyes into China Doll - phew
- Dicks 6 - '83 - Hartford - discs 2 & 3 - one of my favorite Scarlet-Fires - Spanish Jam, Stella
- SF Jazz Collective - 1st album, live 2002 - all-star ensemble - songs of Ornette Coleman + original comps is one of their best - Joshua Redman on board - they just released another live album - material from Antonio Carlos Jobim + original compositions waiting to get into this one. SF Jazz Center is a fantastic venue - small = no bad seats with great sound.

I don't post much but check in and glad to see the community going strong. I'm not an old tape trader, just old, and I feel I've been standing on the shoulders or is it listening in at the ears of all you heads that make the call for your favorite shows - I had never heard Swing '77 - great call - awesome show!! I've started dipping into the archives for other shows you'all call for - lots of great stuff still to be Normanized! Keep 'em coming - Thanks !!

Hi Daverock. Please use words I have a shot at knowing. I had to look up lubricious just to see if you were being nice or not. The jury is still out :(

adjective
1. offensively displaying or intended to arouse sexual desire.
2. smooth and slippery with oil or a similar substance.

Keithfan, if that was really you in the picture you posted the other night, then I would be more than pleased for you to show me your record collection. I don't have any records to bring over, but I'd be equally pleased to show you where I'm feeling lubricious this morning.

Hard to know how many copies of the Warfield CD were available in various markets. Total was allegedly 6000. What is certain is that some were made in the US and some were made in Europe. The European version has the barcode number as the catalog number on the spine of the sleeve and on the discs themselves. Made in the EU is also printed everywhere. At the clear centre of the discs is the name of the plant that made 'em. Not Mexico! How many European copies were made and how many US copies is something we shall never know. 4000 US + 2000 European?

I concur Vguy, that was the best cover art so far and that shirt was pretty nice. I bought 2 and gave one as a gift, now if you all don't think that capitalism is all that bad, the guy I gifted it to kept it till they were sold out, then he put it up on ebay unopened, he got 80.00 bucks for it, do you believe that? Not that I'm recommending we all order extras to sell on the secondary market, but that's a tidy bit of profit for holding on to a t shirt for about 3 months. I will purchase a couple this time also, just to have it and I think I will keep both of them. Just goes to show, you don't never know, but the limited edition stuff sells if that's your bag.
Hippiechick, I do believe the dark star on the upcoming release will get us all moist, sans lube :)

the family was all asleep by 9:30 or so and the phillies were playing a late game @colorado. I settled into my chair, put the game on mute, slipped on some headphones and listened to the 2 new acoustic sets from 10/9 and 10/10/80.

After that I put on the bulk of the 10/23/80 acoustic set from the expanded reckoning release. After a long week, it was as relaxing a Friday night as I could remember (despite the phillies blowing it in the 12th inning).

hope everyone has a peaceful weekend.

Was that dating or flirting? I’m old and forgot what all that was like.....and certainly know nothing about this online stuff ; )

The discussion, my good Grouch E. Ness, was about listening to records. As this site does sponsor a meet up at the movies night, I would say we're in bounds:-)

Recently was fortunate to snag a copy of Dave’s 19 (1/23& p/o 24/70 and finally gave 1/23 a whirl last night. Besides a couple hiccups in the first, what a show. We get TOO and the DS>>SS>>LL, and what a beautifully weird Dark Star that was! Only thing missing was an Eleven, ok perhaps a Caution if we’re being greedy: )
Thinking I’m going to have to find time for all this early 70 stuff; DaP 30 1/2 & 3, DaP 19 1/23&24, DPs 4 2/13&14, 30 trips 4/15, 4/18, DPs 8 5/2, RT v3, #3 5/15, and perhaps a little festival express for dessert!
Another great transitional era I had not dug into much...really like the late 69 into early 70 stretch, kinda reminds me of the late 76 Cow palace- Swing early 77 shift...

.... definitely in bounds. I mean, there's a series called Dick's Pic(k)s for dangs sake! 😉
lol. "subtle"

...Are not yet known. They have to be either Dead originals or public domain according to Dave last year. I put up a tracklist that I thought was a good bet earlier in this thread. Wish more responses were visible per page. But it is what it is. The only hint was Dave said Alligator would be on it, so that sequence is about 23 minutes.

...a grateful morning to all my brothers & sisters out there on this blessed Sunday, Happy Holidays folks!
...I just wrote the intire list of Cover Songs in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire and tried to post it for you all to read but deleted it by accident. I’m on a phone, no computer, it took me a while to do, I’m not going to do it All over again much to hard for this aging Deadhead. I’m sorry. Maybe some else who has a computer can post it for everyone to read... peace be with you all! 🙏❤️😎💐
Ps - don’t forget “arrangements “ 😉✌️
