Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Finally...
...managed to order it. At an estimated cost with shipping, customs etc of around £440! Time to start saving methink. However no sign of the confirmation email - has anyone received this yet? I must say i agree with the comments that it should have been released as individual shows (unlimited). They could have then had the trunk, book etc as an optional limited extra if you wanted, and gradually fill it up as and when you purchase the individual shows. That way those who don't want the fancy packaging or don't want all of the shows could get the shows at a reduced cost, and those who want the full thing could have spread the cost over however long they wished. Simples!

When I first heard about this release (the day after) I went into panic mode thinking I wouldn't be able to get my hands on this, and submitted 4 different email requests (I was also a little tipsy...). I got 4 codes the next day, one for each account. I immediately purchased the set using one code and left the others alone. I was hoping they would be recycled and assumed it would be handled fairly, and I'm glad that this is happening. I felt guilty about submitting all the requests I made the next day, but that happens sometimes when you want something badly and you are browsing the web after some bourbon... :-)

"so quite your gripping your better off than many and still want more? can't always get what you want" Looks like someone completely missed the point of my question. I was simply asking why they don't make more than 7200 boxed sets available for those who are willing to buy it. There are clearly many more people who would be interested in purchasing this. It's not like the majority of people are buying it so they can watch the value increase over the years due to the limited availability.

It would be interesting at the end of all this, when all the spare and unused codes have been handed out to those on waiting lists, to know whether actual sales ever did reach the 7200 limit. Could it be that an illusion of demand was created by multiple reservation requests?

Just checked my email today and I had the letter from Dead.net giving me a code and telling me I will be on the waiting list. So I go to order and I get the response at the very end after submitting card etc. The following product is no longer in stock: GRA99023Europe I try submitting again, same response. So I start it again and it now says my code has already been used. Oh man this is frustrating. Did anyone else experience this. I was so excited that I would actually be on the list and possible get the box set version. I emailed customer service by forwarding my email with code, so hopefully they will assist. Did anyone else experience this problem today? I was so close……

Are there really codes that weren't used or are they now deciding to make more than the original 7200 and just telling us there are codes left over. You have to wonder.

I'm sure there's only going to be the 7200 boxes, but it looks like making the "music only" option the same price might have been good planning. Quite a few of the "music only" people are getting rolled up into the "box set" crowd as codes expire/become available. I suspect a similar situation will arise in September when the box set is released and credit cards start getting charged - some more box sets will become available as charges fail to clear. If the "music only" option was cheaper it would make the bookkeeping much more confusing.

I too received a "code" today at 4:PM Mt. time. I signed up on the reserve list 4 days after the box set went on sale. I feel very lucky. I pulled the trigger and will be counting the days till September. I hope things work themselves out for the rest.

I had originally been shut out of the deluxe edition of the Europe 72 box set and decided to settle for a music only edition. Today I was pleasantly surprised to receive an e-mail from Dead Net telling me that many people ordered too many copies of the deluxe edition, so I was being given the opportunity to order one and a code was enclosed. However, like others when I went to to do so I kept getting a message that the deluxe edition was sold out. After trying a few times I ultimately received a message that my code was no longer valid. How frustrating!! Like the previous poster, I e-mailed customer service in the hopes that they can help me. When I hear back from them I'll post and let everyone know how it worked out.

Call the 800 number or they might've filled the 7200 quota...it's not known how many orders went through from the original orders...or try again in the morning maybe they're not effective until midnight...but it's definitely a good sign you got a code sent to you...it'll be worth the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If it's saying sold out sadly it means the quota is filled...if it said code not working that would actually be better news...i'm sure a bunch of people will die before September so maybe they'll have a waiting list for the dead customers who died in the interim

On Monday 7 Feb I received an order confirmation for the box set, after being invited to order one the day before. Today I get another invitation to order one. As I only need one set, feel free to use it.It may end up being sold out however, as I gather from previous posts... You asked for a miracle and a miracle you shall receive! We've got great news. Due to some Dead Heads reserving more copies than their significant others would let them order (we think this is the reason) a limited number of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings boxed sets have become available. Pulls up in front of the house yesterday, driver lowers his tailgate and struggles to load this gargantuan crate onto his puny little dolly, then manhandles the thing up the hill to my front porch. Out of breath, he mutters something that sounds like, "Where d'ya wannit?" Is it, can it be, Europe '72 has arrived?!! The driver is more than a little annoyed when I point him back down the hill to my garage -- it's going in my basement den. And at least it's all downhill from here, but I'm figuring that I'm gonna have to tip him at least a twenty after all this huffing and puffing. Ok, fantasy over. Back to waiting...

I put my name out there for the music only edition, not because I needed it but just so I knew what was going on... Got one of those emails today that says there are some of the original 7,200 still available. I guess that makes it not really sold out after four days, eh? Now that the initial frenzy has subsided and actual orders are being placed, we'll see how many people who wanted the full box actually get stuck with the music only edition...

well I think with the store crashing several times, and with so many confusing messages and lack of confirmations a lot of people just hit every 'order' button they could while it was there, in the hope that one of them might work. That's what I did. At least they seem to be shaking out all the extras in an ordered way. Hopefully we will all learn from this.

There have been some great comments on here, some funny stuff, and the negative vibes, but i wanted to say good luck to the people that missed out in the begining. thing is ~ maybe did not have the luck, maybe you acted immediately or you hesitated at the cost just by the $$$ ~ not quiet knowing how you can pay so much off at once, running it by the missis 'she still don't know' and it's a good thing we have till Sept to come up with the $$$ ~ truth is the Stones or any other great size act like the GD would take both your arms and leave you with one leg in the end ~ what a good deal. ~ i remember the daze when 'we' sent in for mail order * then the wait for the shows to roll around and around ~ kind feels like the samething anxiously looking forward for the release and arrival :)

Nay I say. We're going to rush the gate again because 'general admission' means getting up front fast and hangin' on. First come, first served. I wonder when the real sell out date would have been had things been running just exactly perfect. Man I hope whoever gets theirs first will hold off on posting the information or customer service will be swamped again.

Well I was ecstatic this morning to find I too had been isued with a code. But only for as long as it took me to get the 'item out of stock' message previously mentioned. I also had a code sent to my works e mail (I hedged my bets but only want the one set), and used that with the same result. If I try again now I get the 'code used' message. Presumably this cannot be correct as the codes were sent to me personally - unless Rhino have sent out more codes that here are sets available which would be unscrupulous to say the least as the codes do not run out for over a week, and also given the previous problems over this issue. It would have been really nice for Customer services to respond to my e mails today & not leave me on ice over the weekend. I would be interested to know how many more 'heads' are in the same position. If this is somewhat long winded, my apologies. Signed..... Totally frustrated!!!!!!

Hey now,Hope everyone is well. Its been quite a ride these past couple of weeks, huh? I did not get in on the initial box offering but was kinded with a code by a fellow Deadhead early on. I did sign up for the music only option and have now been presented with the opportunity to purchase the set. Since I have been taken care of already, I will gladly offer it to someone here if they are in need. PM me and its yours, or I will let expire and rotate back to be offered again. Once in a while you can get shown the light... Peace

and you notify them of this, I'm sure they will correct the situation. Don't panic, especially over something as trivial as a bunch of CDs, and by "trivial" I mean look what's going on in Egypt, and the fact that some child in a hospital somewhere is dying of cancer. Not to get too preachy, I'm looking forward to having the set myself. I remember seeing the Dead in Atlanta in, I think, 88 or 89, Spring tour. We got off the subway and there was this guy wiggin' out yelling, "the scalpers are ripping off the heads, no one can get tickets!", in full flight histrionics. Well, we got tickets outside the Omni for face value, which was about $16.50, I believe. So maybe if Mr. Wig Out had kept his cool, he would have found tickets. Not to many people are going to approach you with your solution when you're acting all upset.

Having signed up for the Music Only version, I too received an e-mail from dead.net offering the full set, with an accompanying code. Like others here, I entered the code, got through the whole ordering process, only to be told that the item was out of stock. A couple of hours later, I made a new attempt, which was successful. So, my advice is to keep trying! It doesn't seem to be sold out, at least. (If you get a message saying the code is already expired, try to check if the box is already in your cart.)

Well if every post of the whole thread so far had been "got mine!" -- we'd be a bit over 2,000 now. And we all know this thread hasn't been like that! But if all the individuals posting here so far got a copy, I'd say we're still under half that. And yet, I have no doubt all 3,000 are long gone.

I was successful today in reserving a deluxe edition of the Europe 72 Box Set. So, apparently the Dead's people re-set the codes, so try again if it didn't work yesterday!

Whats funny to me is that there are several sellers on Ebay auctioning off the codes where you still have to purchase the set beyond once you win the auction. Talk about counting chickens before they hatch.

SPACEBROTHER ;"Whats funny to me is that there are several sellers on Ebay auctioning off the codes where you still have to purchase the set beyond once you win the auction. Talk about counting chickens before they hatch." I wonder if those eBay codes work given the issues some fans here have had. Imagine spending $1,000.00 PLUS and the code did not work! @#$%^!!!!!!!!! Returning to the potential of other GD box sets being released whether large or small: Since There is a Fillmore West Complete 1969 -- which would be great if they re-released it -- does The Fillmore East deserve a similar release? Which Fillmore East run should it be?

Thanks again, to Mary for resetting my password, without which I wouldn't have been able to communicate on this forum to receive a gifted code! After an incredible but leisurely PM exchange, in which I figured I was too late at first, I held my breath and let the smiling new code rip, had to skip logging in to my store account (waiting for Dr. Rhino to reset that one!) but got all the way through to confirmation with email, JLASW (maybe even as good as this one: http://www.gizmag.com/urwerk-ur-110-watch/17747/)! Thanks of course to all involved, and hopefully lots more on the forum will be set on their ways to reserve their set. Everyone has their favorite era; for some it was a little before this tour—the late '60s and as we all know, its all good. Just remembering one of my first Chevy Vega 8-tracks with the E72 covers, that eventually had to be jammed on the left with popsicle sticks to play right, , and my first show at RFK, 6/9/73, you can imagine how much these shows mean to me. (BTW, first rock concer ever, SW & Stones, RFK, 7/4/72! Bouncing the lower deck around before baseball ever got back to DC! But, before the show ever started, in response to the M-80 rain! Sounds like alternative lyrics to a BH&TR song . . .) Just talking and piecing some of this together on this forum has been great to gradually open up just what went on during that tour, e.g. how precious any video of the clown performance must be. Understanding that this was Ronnie's last tour put the 9/11-12/73 W&M poster—right at cha down the barrel wearing a Stetson—in perspective. Thanks again and many cheers to all, Laser

I was lucky enough to purchase a box set, not personalized though but not complaining. Anywhoo, I was sent an email saying there were still box sets available. Anyone who was shut out PM me and I will forward the link. Good luck, hope it works out! First come first served. Code expires on the 17th.

Yes there's about 10 people selling codes for little as $60 up to 250$ and the box set itself is from 650$ to 1,100$ even though you won't get it for 7 months or so...way beyond the point where you can put in a claim...legally can they do this? I know many of you don't bother with EBAY...i don't bother with Ebay in years as i feel their site is shady at best...i remember the 1969 fiasco i was number 4000 and something out of 10,000...if that's true that really only 10,000 were ever made...but i'm not going to sell it as the Dead is what i make money for in the 1st place...among other things but i always buy their products because they do everything i value musically...but i'm glad for this site and not having to resort to what others will have to resort to...i hope this site will make this set available to everyone so those people don't rip anyone off...sort of like ticket scalpers someone said earlier...so i guess this will always happen but it doesn't mean it's right or that it should happen either.

I'm not sure Ebay should be critized for what they do. They are just a vehicle for commission that brings buyers and sellers together in an auction format. They do a very good job at attempting to keep it righteous. Righteous does not mean any price asked or bid should be regulated as that is the business of the individual parties concerned. As with any transaction, especially over the internet where product at best is only pictured and described, do your homework. Two others things to bear in mind- 1. Let the buyer beware which is one of the most ancient of business law sayings ('caveat emptor or something), and 2- If it's too good to be true, it probably is. With literally millions of objects from buttons to houses being listed daily, they need a break in catching the forbidden activities. If I ever saw just a code for sale for the E72 set, there's no way I wouldn't be on this site as well as many other sites to educate myself about this set and see where the best deal can be. There's a lot on Ebay I never even new existed but that doesn't mean I'm throwing money at it. Personally, I find the code sellers disgusting but commerce thrives on 'there's a sucker born every minute".I conclude now after that third proverb, which is getting overbearing. Now if I can only find that 'Trip Outfitters Since 1965' Golden Gate edition shirt in XXL.

Greetings from Down Under! Was just reading the tete-a-tete re. Blair Jackson's essays, which I always enjoy. Will the notes for Europe '72 box be made available with the 'music only' version? Sure do hope so! Mountain Girl once told me the Dead would love to have played Australia but were worried about customs; reading liners - as well as the Taper's Compendium - as I listen makes for an even richer experience, and is about as close as I'll ever get to having been there!

Just checked and there are 7 codes for sale, ranging from $200 to $.37- capitalism at it finest. Many pages earlier, someone said they reported this to Ebay and the codes got pulled. Hope it's done again as it is against policy. Not very different from the scalpers being chased away and going to the next street corner, business as usual. Feel sorry for any bidders, you would think some are bound to as many heads out there not really knowing. I was glad to see for the past week many E72 sets go unbid on the site. Any unsold sets they would have to eat or have a price reduction, but the codes will just expire. Those expirations mean more for the deserving on the waiting list.

I don't think so. I think what got pulled was some "actual discs" auctions/sales got pulled because the E72 discs aren't in the sellers' possession yet, an eBay technical violation, as I understand it. The sellers, ever clever, found a way around the technical problem: now they sell the codes, not the discs. Interesting to see what happens next: presumably, if GDM soon end the "code" distributions there will nothing left to sell on eBay until September, except maybe "for $1 I'll tell you the webaddress of GDM, where you can buy it yourself."

Did anyone else experience the same, I got a code for the the complete set and when I was to checkout I got the message that said that the item was out of stock
