    August 20 - August 26, 2007

As we move toward the symbolic end of summer (Labour Day, of course), we have some great music to play spanning about 21 years of Grateful Dead music, from 1968 to 1989, two fine years with which to bookend this week’s offerings.

Our first entry this week is the encore from 8/21/68 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, a nice, juicy Midnight Hour. Although not quite as prevalent at shows in 1968 as it had been in 1966, the Grateful Dead continued to play monster versions of this Pigpen vehicle.

Next we’ll stop into 1972, to the opening night of the rightfully famous Europe 72 tour, to 4/7/72 in London. From the middle of that night’s first set is a typically hot 1972 rendition of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

In 1976, at the end of their very successful summer of comeback shows, the Grateful Dead entered the studio and recorded a couple of the songs they’d been playing that summer. From one of those sessions on 8/29/76 is this bare-bones Dancing In The Street with only Donna on vocals. While we’re in mid-1970s mode, we also have this terrific Samson and Delilah from 5/12/77 in Chicago. Despite the frequency that song was played in 1976-1977, they never seem to get tired of it, always offering up an inspired rendition.

Finally from the 1970s, on 4/22/78 in Nashville to be precise, we are pleased to bring you a couple of tracks from the second set, starting with the second set opening Lazy Lightning>Supplication and the pre-Drums Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World, both very nicely performed songs on this night.

Our last stop this week is in New Jersey on 7/10/89, a show that took place in and out of a massive thunderstorm. By request, we have the first set closer, The Music Never Stopped, and from the start of the second set, a great 1989 combination of Foolish Heart, Just a Little Light, Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. What a great tour.

Be sure to check in next week, as we’ll be exploring some intriguing material from 1969 and 1980, and other material between those years, and likely after. We try to surprise even ourselves. Feel free to write with questions or comments.

Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats.

    What a travesty!
I guess nothing good ever lasts, but this new format is HUGELY DISAPPOINTING! There was nothing better than to be able to put these gems of dead music on my mp3 player and listen whenever i wanted. Now it's only in streaming version?! I wish there would be the courtesy of explanation why this move was made.I used to look forward to Mondays like it was Christmas! Now it's just not as good to have to stream to listen. It was like a slap in the face when i saw the change! Anyway, think those who oppose this could petition to bring the prior format back?

    seriously!?!
what has the world come to. just when i think that they can't take any more away, POW right in the kisser. i agree with those that say they won't be back, i wont be. it's just a shame the community elders see fit to restrict the little free access we still have. sorry david, you were doing a grate job, sign of times i guess. Viva La Tape Trade!

    Sorry Funkster
..But I do not miss the point.First, I am referring only to folks who specifically cite Jerry and quote him as the difinitive answer to the music flowing freely.. If you don't care who said what..then I'm not really referring to you. Second., we paid for shows with our tickets. We got into the gig. Nothing more really. The gas, sweat and tears are up to you. But try getting a discount at a theater or a raise at your job for the gas you spend getting there...won't happen. Third, I was most definitely there as well. On the bus in 70. I saw folks gettin' hassled by the you-know-whos in the crew for taping early on. Many early auds were stealthy. Btw, Owsley detested the tapers. The GD saw the futility and errors of their ways about audience taping and finally let it go....but t'was not always thus. Of course none of this really pertains to the soundboards which are, without any doubt, complete property of the band. Even Rhino is only a 10 year licensee I agree about much of the music being out there and not to fret about the vault. At this stage, I'm just looking for lost film footage. Until then, I twirl.

Hey, I just stopped by and was surprised to see all of the pages of posts. Wow, it just keeps growing. The one thing I would recommend is to not be disrespectful. If Rhino pulled the plug on the thing, then boycott Rhino, no need for slandering. I myself will not record any of these files by Audacity if they do not want that, but there is streaming audio elsewhere that I want to record, and was wondering how to get Audacity to record one file per song? I tried it, and it seems to create a new file every 30 seconds or so. Anyone familiar with it who can give me advice? Greg SC

There's got to be some way to accomodate us die-hard fans and whoever wanted this change. Release a few songs for us to download, as a tease, then release the CDs, we'd buy 'em almost guaranteed. This is how you love your fans?

There's an enemy now? holy shit. I know a few folks who work for Rhino in real life and they're not posting in here. That makes them Enemy? I'm just a mod (who like DG can edit posts, btw, but I'll leave my Fucks right here where you can see 'em), and I don't know anything you don't know too, but fucking hell man. "The enemy is listening?" lighten up a little!

That was actually sticker on Jerry's old Travis Bean circa 1977, all I meant by it is the MP3's were pulled for a reason, now folks are talking here about ways to record the stream and so forth, lets not make it so we lose those too!

Dear Friends I have been examining other significant world events this past week, and I think I am beginning to see a pattern which may go some way to explaining the ongoing mystery of the disappearing MP3s 1. The Journal Science has revealed that experts have found a way to trigger an out-of-body experience in volunteers. 2. Old age is apparently not preventing US citizens from enjoying active sex lives, researchers there say. 3. Cuban leader Fidel Castro is doing "very well" and is determined to fully recover from ill health, 4. Too many people are being diagnosed with depression when all they are is unhappy, a leading psychiatrist says 5. 'Dead star' erupts for big show: Scientists are studying the violent outburst of a dead star as it tries to fire back into life. If you consider these important facts in the light of my exclusive revelation that the anagram of Rhino Records is RICHER DONORS, I think you will agree that I am onto something More soon!

A seemingly endless stream of commercialization has been invading the dead world. This one hits hard. I recall the old jerry quote (something to the extent of) "i don't care what anyone does with my music after I'm done with it". Seems like the longer he's gone, the less that sentiment is remembered. who drives this? certainly the bandmembers have sufficient resources to live the lives of their choosing. is this to feed the "hanger's on"? didn't the band simply stop for a period to reduce this? also, the digital rights management thing gives each of the media control businesses another way to take over your system. the net result of this change simple makes it more difficult to get it. several friends have already been ripping the streams, then converting to their format of choice. i dont mean to criticize anyone in the community, but when is enough too much? thanks for the forum. -b

It just isn't right to take this away from us LOYAL FANS without an explanation! To do it in this faceless sort of way is just cowardly in my view! We are reasonable people !! The way this was done is sort of under handed ! I understand who own's the music and their overall right's to it and it's monetary value!! But to dangle a carrot and then just yank it away without an explanation to people who have kept this music {live or recorded} alive with our hard earned cash is just irresponsible.Maybe a post last week would have been appropriate! I don't know! I will continue to support the surviving member's in all there endeavor's{ I'm going to be buying Ratdog ticket's @ 12:30 tomorrow} but i must admit sometimes these thing's are hard to take, and if anybody care's about the existing fanbase somebody should wakeup!!Rogue

Concerning this whole mess- it was first a bit of shock, a disappointment, an aggravation. I've tried the patience thing, read all of the posts and realize it's out of the hands of those that actually care about the music, i.e. DG and DL and i'm sure others (who have no control in the matter), But after no official comment or explanation with such a large response of concerned postings, my feelings about all this have turned to apathy. If the powers that be don't care enough to shed some light on things, i don't care anymore either. Certainly more important matters going on in this country and world where open dialogue and reasonable discussion may or may not change things. Yeah, that's right, I give up on this site. I still care about the music and will find it elsewhere, but jeez, what a debacle this has been! It's generated plenty of discussion if nothing else. Thanks for everything! #415... It is a shame that the collective reaction has seemingly exceeded the boundaries of "reason" but I understand the reasoning, given the lack of communication to this very moment, the emotions being expressed and certain comments that seem to have been edited after the fact... and the lack of the music we had all come to look forward to each Monday morning. I say "shame" because I thought perhaps if any population were qualified to assume the best or find resolve in a time of loss in "selflessness", it would be the deadheads. On the other hand, assuming the best seems rather foolish and though I wish less anger had been expressed here (for collectively selfish reasons) it is understandable given the entire history of downloading Dead music and the very much anticipated new releases that exist only in concept form next to a calculator on someone's desk. Let's face it... we have full access to the Vault. It's out there... somewhere. The more years that pass the more places it will all become available. We don't need Rhino. Hunting tracks and concerts down even is part of the fun. Despite this, we have been supporting Rhino and we even seem to be trying to find ways to help them let us continue to support them which is plain ironic and is either a really good sign or a really bad one. I personally don't want any mainstream anything distributing GD merchandise but what I want is irrelevant really. I just fear that Rhino will offer the following response "Well f___ you too!" but don't be surprised that it never lands in your inbox... as it's bad for PR. The point raised earlier about bandwidth Rhino has to shell out for us to listen to the new format is an excellent point and makes me want to take the longest file I can find, set it to play continuously overnight or for as long as my machine is turned on and ask others to do the same... but this wouldn't be right (or environmental for that matter). I don't think we should resort to threats such as punishing ourselves further by boycotting this site and community and not partaking in the sale of future releases. A spade is a spade and we're in it for life and we're most definitely going to be buying that next release... whatever it turns out to be. I don't believe everything in life has to use that same old boring typical pathetic sad cheap model... though I won't be surprised to find out that it's too late either. I think it is important for people to express themselves and technically useful for Rhino since as it occurred to me earlier today while sitting in my office... some execs had to have been discussing exactly all of this as I was glancing over the comments and contemplating giving that streaming a second try. I did not. I just think we should remember that the individual can impact the whole community and ideally we should express ourselves wisely and as constructively as possible. If those expressing themselves in such fatalistic and final ways were correct in saying that no one with any heart has any say in any of this and we are left to deal with the "corporation" (and we all know how much sympathy and accountability they've been known to instill in the masses) then please accept my apology for this well intentioned "distraction" of mine. I am hoping for the best and getting tired of having to do so. Certain sad and pathetic recurring themes... boring even! Let's show Rhino the best of us and maybe we'll get to see the best of them. Personally, I'm going to await the best possible response from the administrators of this site and from Rhino outlining the best possible reasoning and the best possible proposal to provide the best possible outcome. It will be a personal experiment, even if fit proves to be a foolish move in the end. I have come to this conclusion because I won't allow myself to resemble in any way what it is that I am supposedly opposed to and myself aside, what is done... is done. This is my final comment at least until we hear back. I guess someone else gets that #420 I was hoping to land on. Fingers crossed...

While I too am disappointed at the decision made to change the format, I am still appreciative that they allowed us to download all they did to this point. At the end of the day we are all left wondering why they made the change and why it was not communicated. I am sure the decision was made for revenue consideration, and the same could be said for the reasons behind not communicating. Perhaps they were concerned that if word got out ahead of time that those who had not DL the files would do so in a frenzy and effectively crash the system. (I am sure that most of you already had the majority archieved properly) I also wonder if or how this plays into the new GD station on Sirius radio, among other things. I guess it really doesn't matter. In the end I can still say that I am appreciative of the files offered for DL and still look forward to the opportunity to receive more "freebies" if/when they elect to do so. There will be more "for fee" options coming out I am sure, I will just have to be more selective in deciding which are most worthy (they all have value) and look forward to objective feedback/ratings from the others here to help drive those decisions.

Maybe i'm in a small group but honestly I have just about everything the dead played that circulates and most of what they played does circulate. So for me I don't need Rhino for anything really. But the collector in me and the dead fan wants to hear everything especially something that doesn't circulate at all or in really poor audience or sbd quality. I think a bunch of the heat Rhino is getting over this is that people like me are getting impatient with the lack of releases and this feels like another slap in the face. The download series was great, look at the cool shows that came out that didn't circulate before. Everyone thought that someone big like Rhino would start pumping the releases out or offering them for downloads. But we've got pretty much nothing really. A great website, we had a cool feature with the taper section. Still cool, just not in the same ball park as before. Come on Rhino release some stuff already: more E72, 5-13-73, 77 Palladium shows, 72 Academy of Music shows, Fall 71 11-17-71 and others. You get the idea. A great idea would be to work on the winterland 73 shows. Wait, those were already done and ready to go, why don't you release them. Or even better why don't you tell us what's up or coming down the line. What a great marketing idea that would be. Looks like you went for the piss off all the loyal dead heads path for marketing. You need to start creating good will and cheer among us, or maybe you just don't care about the loyal fans.

David Gans tells us this is more complicated than we are assuming. I completely trust that statement. I know he is pulling for the right thing to be done. I believe that David Lemieux is the most bothered by these posts and I feel saddness that I have been a part of his stress. Albeit a few days late, here it is from me.......David Lemieux, I know in my heart that deserve better than the credit we are not giving you. I am not here thanking you for your past work. I am writing this to let you know how appreciative I am of what you are doing now, behind the scenes. These downloads are not going to have a negative impact on my life in the long run. The fact that I was willing to forget about you as a brother to all of us would make me less of a friend. I WILL STAND UP FOR YOU 100% and ask that we all do. Not just give David credit for past gifts, but to give him full credit as a true brother!

It's amazing to me how hunters's lyrics always seem to sum it up... First off, if jerry was still with us, this would never have happened!! Second, If have listened to the tapers section all this time,, and have not burned one CD Just Knowing I could was enough for me... I think they should rename it as the Streaming Section. At this point that would be a far more truthfull description. Tapers section at shows always implied you could take the music home with you, and share it with whomever you pleased... I too am thankful for all the work you did David I would like to hear from you, about this decision that has upset so many people The free music was a great selling point to turn on others to the kindness of The Grateful Dead Don't lend a hand, to raise no flag atop no SHIP OF FOOLS

I will also state that I appreciate David Lemeiux's role as the Deads vaultmeister and that he communicates with everyone who inquires. I will also state my belief that this was'nt his decision. In an earlier post I wrote that Rhino/Warner Brothers/Wea ect has a long standing reputation for questionable business practices. I also observe that when Etree, archive.org and related sights made the soundboard material streaming coincided with the sale of the Deads catalog/vault to WB/Rhino. This leads me to believe that these decisions were not made by anybody within the Dead organization. Rhino could redeem themselves to many fans by stepping up the amount of product released and not rehashing previously released material with a couple extra tracks ala the recent box sets of the albums. It's interesting that there has'nt been anything exclusively new since the Fillmore box set a couple years ago and that only an extreme limited number of those were produced further alienating the fans. One upside has been the incentive of preordering by offering bonus discs or the Dicks Dex. I personally found the bonus stuff better than the actual releases themselves. Simply - increase the output of new material then the streaming won't matter because that is essentially what most everyone wants. The streaming should be utilized as a preview for new releases and should be offered at a minimum of on a quartely schedule much like the old GD Almanac days.

Total Recorders really good. Been using it for years. Damned if I am going to stream these files tho' and hang around recording them. Most of 'em I've got anyway, and theo others I don't want - low interest years. But - I don't like what Rhino are doing, but all the soundboards are out there already; who's to stop anyone trading for them? And many amongst us torrent ....

Whew! That is one big IF! But I think someone hit it right on the head. IF Jerry were alive, THIS would never have happened. So true! I can't think of one time while Jerry was alive that music recorded via soundboard and kept in "the vault" was offered freely. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I think if Jerry were alive, this crowd might just give him a hairball. | I'm just a, well...porpoise. |

-----------------------On August 24th, 2007 dgans said: re: "First off, if jerry was still with us, this would never have happened!!" Here's something to think about. What do you suppose it meant when Jerry had a sticker on his guitar that said THE ENEMY IS LISTENING? ----------------------- I don't know David, what does it mean? It could have several meanings. It could be Jerry being serious. I could be Jerry being sarcastic or simply wanting to f@#k with people. I could be referring to the government, the crowd his bandmates, the record companies or simply the guys at the soundboard listening to the mix. So instead of being all cryptic, why don't YOU tell us what YOU think it means - maybe YOU should try taking a stand one way or the other instead of going with that 'it's much more complicated' nonsense - OR, just maybe, you feel, deep down, that Jerry's reference to the 'enemy' might have been referring to people like you - that say one thing but whose actions say just the opposite? Just a thought. In the meantime however, how 'bout you head to Starbucks, grab one of their overpriced coffees, make sure that your 'pet music project' is prominently displayed for sale next to the muffins and compose an informative, straightforward, non-profane response/explanation. ...I won't be holding my breath though as I don't think you have the character/integrity/ or balls for that matter to do the right thing - but who knows...sometimes you can get shown the light in the strangest of places...

OK. Enough already!I've been returning here daily because I'm interested in the phenomena of this discussion and the "official" communciation as it relates to questions of music and collective spiritual experience vs. corporate greed. But this is getting a little boring. Don't really care about the streams or downloads any more. I do care a lot about the LACK OF RESPECT AND COMMUNICATION from the "Official Grateful Dead" site. I've been checking back in morbid fascination to see if there will be an apology or clarification or even a defensive explanation or ANYTHING! But the damage is done, and this has become a waste of time. I got so much great live dead. I love it I love it I love it and I get more for free whenever I want. I appreciate the way the brief flowering of this site, like Haight Ashbury before the Summer of Love, re-awakened the passionate Dead Head in me. But hanging around here now is a buzz kill. Lets move up to Marin and hang on the hills and beaches! Never actually listened to Gans' show and, given his smugness here, doubt I ever will. This whole Dead.net thing has little to do with the true Dead experience. Thats OK. But I am offended when they pretend to care about our community as a marketing tactic. Feel free to respond to this, if you got nothing better to do, but I won't see it as I will not be returning here. Can't wait til the Phil show at Red Rocks next month! See you there, and lets keep all the gorgeous free music (that, if anyone cares, we already paid for many times over long ago...) flowing flowing flowing. Websites come and go but that river roll roll roll. PEACE OUT Dr. Funky

This shit is like crack, take it away for a sec and everyone starts withdraws. Everyone needs to chill out. It seems kind of obvious that Rhino went and made a change and left EVERYBODY in the dark, that's why we're not hearing anything from the higher ups, they're still debating it with themselves and Rhino, give them a little time to work this out. How do any of you know this new format is permanent? Even if it is, up until a year ago, this section didn't even exist. If you really want the music so bad why not start trading with your friends, like in the "old" days (probably 99% of the music posted on here can be found that way ya just gotta poke around). Remember this is a privilege, not a right. They don't have to post anything. Just be happy for what we already have. I think we need to lay off the Davids and crew. P.S. I don't know what what would be happening if Jerry was still alive, but I do know that Jerry's death is one of the main causes for the current state of insanity in the Dead world. Jerry's death(loss of revenue from touring)+ high overhead(large staff pulling decent salaries[meaning they make enough to have a roof over their heads, send kids to college, ect.]/other costs[not gonna get into them now])=lack of cash flow=layoff of employees and sale to Rhino=current situation.

I'm here for the first time since Monday morning and I'm amazed by the enormous number of comments. I knew this was going to happen sooner or later (similar to GDLive) and it even started to feel like David Lemieux was pulling one over on the suits by slowly releasing tune after tune until we had the complete show (like NH '78) It's curious, however, because in the past few months there were never this many posts, and I had even wondered why so few people were participating in the give and take that David encouraged. I personally did not discover that this was going on until May, and thankfully I combed past entries to flesh out any incomplete shows in my collection. I began posting my requests and praise to let David know that his efforts were appreciated, and he responded by releasing more from the shows that people were writing about (see NH '78). Now that people are angry and afraid of losing something that they took for granted, they are coming out of the woodwork to be heard, and some it is nasty (attacking David Gans?!) Where were all these people when things were going well? The same thing happened after archive.org changed, where you might see a dozen people commenting about a show's merits, but hundreds complaining about losing the same show. If you don't support something when times are good, you may find it's too late to help when times go bad.

Gans and Lemieux do NOT deserve the vitriol of the fans. They are on our side... Shame on the posters here who have called them out. it's getting to be re-goddamn-diculous...

David Gans has done so much to get the music out through his show and much more. He just helped raise an incredible amount of money in a short time for Mark Karan to help him with his cancer fight. Do you think he does this out of greed? Come on people. David is the only with with a connection with Rhino who has responded at length here and he gets attacked on a personal level, not just for what he says. Talk about killing the messenger. He is caught in a place like someone in middle management, trying to find common ground. You ever been there? It's tough, let me tell you. Rhino is a big corporation and I am dissappointed in them, however they have brought me lots of great music through the years (non-Dead), so I would like to hope for the best. Right now there is a war in Iraq, global warming, loss of wild nature, disparity of income in the U. S. is growing etc., etc. Those are things to be really pissed off about and do something about. Put this in perspective, please. I think I am starting to get a hairball now, so I will stop. Peace now! Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

As i said earlier David has done more anyone, including DL, to our ears. It was hard in England to Get anything but the stuff from GDH got through eventually, otherwise 28th March 81 would have been all i could listen to. Thanks again David Bob W - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Spanish Jam

Where are the posts attacking David Lemieux? I haven't seen any, unless I missed one somewhere. In a previous post I suggested that he put a resume together, tongue in cheek, because I wondered if he still enjoyed working for the organization. Personally, I would love it if GDP would start cranking out Dave's Picks and pick up where the Dick's Picks (sadly) left off. I never thought I'd actually collect all 36 of the latter, but I must feed my jones. The posts attacking David Gans, however, (and I could be accused as writing one of them) have been sometimes fair, sometimes not. alpine89 disgusted me with his last post, and I doubt if anybody appreciates that sort of writing. I, for one, will probably hop on down to Starbucks and check out the track list of said compilation. I probably won't buy it since I probably own all of it already, and I certainly won't be buying their coffee (since I think it tastes gross), but I have no problems with GD product being sold there. The Dylan "Live at the Gaslight" disc was spectacular. Paul McCartney's new album might be his best. Joni Mitchell just signed with the company. I guess, in my case, a cooler head has prevailed. I WILL be coming back to this website. I WILL buy more GD stuff. And I WILL hope that downloads will return. Until they do, I'll just sit here in my disappointment and listen to the hundreds of hours of music I already have and value highly. Mr. Gans, if I am one of the people who pissed you off, I apologize.

I guess the common thread in all of this is ... "we want more shows to purchase." Hopefully Rhino will get the message. Does anyone know what is scheduled to come out next? I guess Rhino could be likened to a man who is sitting on 2000 gallons of bottled water in the desert, and then only dribbling out drops to the scorched throats that walk up asking for water. That is what I hear in these threads. Hey, open the floodgates. Greg SC

the sound quality of this week's streams is absolutely dismal after recording it with Total Recorder. Don't bother, unless you want to hear much distortion and can enjoy that. Frankly, to me it sounds like a low quality bootleg.

Hell...I 'm more angry that Lesh won't hook up with Weir, Billy and Hart. Now that would freak Jerry. After touring BlackJack to complete exhaustion these dudes couldn't keep the gig or the vibe together. I know you Rider and I do miss you.

This whole things smacks of the same attitudes that led to the gate-crashing at Deer Creek.. and it makes me feel sick, the same way it did in '95. So may self-rightous, selfish, whinning babies... gimme, gimme, gimme... mine, mine, mine... free, free, free... If I was incharge, I'd cut it off.. ya'll should be glad I'm not. You people need to re-read the "Water of Life" stories and put your petty little egos aside. Some great examples of being Grateful shown here lately. My apologies to Walt Kelly for attributing his genius to someone else. (Although I swear I have a picture in my head of Sir Rodney standing before the little short king and reporting the "enemy" remark. Damn, this getting old sucks.)David, thanks for setting the record straight. Journalism 101 - If your going to quote someone, make sure you get it right. DOH! (That sound you just heard is me slapping myself in the forehead. I do that a lot these days.) One final remark - Looking back through the last five days of this thread it is easy for me to understand how civil wars get started and progress to the point where nobody can even remember what they are fighting about. I really am ashamed of myself. I'm sorry. I'll slink off in the corner be quiet now.

I don't think the shareholders of Rhino's parent company would like that too much. I doubt they would be happy with the current stewardship of the vault if they knew just how incompetently it is being handled. There is so much value to be realized, yet the folks who are running things clearly have no idea who they're customers are. Speaking of Rhino and the powers that be - their silence over this is deafening. Here we have 40+ pages of comments over their latest boneheaded move and not a peep from them explaining what the hell is going on. I guess this shouldn't be surprising given the obvious contempt they have for GD fans everywhere. Well, apparently the feeling is becoming increasingly mutual.
