IWT for both. Yeah that was crazy and unexpected at the time for them to go back into the Playin' Reprise on the 12th. I love the long, dark jam after UJB, the Space into the longish Playin jam and then BAM - UJB Reprise into the Dew. The Good Lovin encore was icing on the cake! I left that little arena with my jaw on the floor. :-0

Alpine 8/7/82 : Music Never Stopped>Sugaree>Music Never Stopped

I can only talk about what I actually saw. Way back when Alpine Valley was new, and I was rather young, I snuck down to 3rd row center. Being high as a kite they opened the show with this Music>Sugaree>Music sandwich. The rest is on Dicks Pick's Vol 32. I was taken by how they started Sugaree perfectly. Of course, I saw the next night which was also totally amazing and then Iowa City on the 10th to end the tour.
Of course, I saw a lot more sandwiches, but that one was very memorable.

Sure it's a Stella in the middle?
On 2/18/71 there was a wicked Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star combo. If you want to stick with Stella, my favorite jam sequence is from 10/25/73: Dark Star > Mind Left Body Jam > Dark Star Jam > Eyes of the World > Stella Blue Maybe it's a China Doll in the sandwich??

Well, if an open-sandwich sounds palatable, then check out the following DS>SB duos: 12/11/72 (massive DS) http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1972/12/11/dark-star 10/30/73 (Very Cool: DS>MLB Jam>DS JAM>SB) http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1973/10/30/dark-star 7/25/74 http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1974/7/25/dark-star As far as I can tell, over the course of 30 years and 2300+ shows, these represent the only times those songs occupied adjoining slots in the setlist./Enjoy! Deadbase yields no results; in fact, I looked for extended sequences that might have incorporated other songs with SB b/w DS bookends (to include just a DS Jam sans lyrics), but couldn't find an example of that either. Two thoughts: there are still some uncirculated shows and incomplete setlists, in addition to which, the band may have teased DS as an outro to SB or an intro to what developed into another song or jam that eventually centered around another theme and, therefore, wasn't ultimately labeled DS. Of course, maybe I just missed it. Then again, this one might just be your GD unicorn (I'd sure like to THINK it exists!). Anyway, it's always fun to look! :)) /K

3/23/74 DP24 also features: Playing in the Band>UJB>Morning Dew>UJB>Playing in the Band Enjoying it right now! The first PITB suffers from an entertaining false start and meltdown. For sandwich connoisseurs this is (according to setlists) the third and last time this combo was played. The middle one is 11/17/73 (mentioned above) and the first is 11/10/73 also on a vine! Now I see that 11/21/73 has a triple decker sandwich! Playin' In The Band El Paso Playin' In The Band Wharf Rat Playin' In The Band think I'll go and find it out there as a new years present..aha downloading now!!!! Happy New Year

I remember someone telling me that one night the Dead played the first part of "Playin in the Band" at a venue in one city. They finished the song a couple of nights later at a different venue in another city. I'm not sure where it happened, but I'm pretty sure it was during the summer tour in the late eighties or early nineties. That's quite the "Musical Sandwich"!

Thank you for the post. Great setlists! Have you listened to the Berkeley Community Theater shows, Nov.1984? From what I remember there's a wonderful "Drums/Space" that transitions into UJB. "Space" has an underwater, maritime theme to it. Incredible! At one time I had a SB recording/copy of the show, but it's long since vanished.

The earliest one I know about ~ on the Database as Aug '66, though reportedly Dick Latvala ID'd it as a Trips Festival tape (thus from April '66) ~ Good Morning Little Schoolgirl -> You Don't Love Me -> Schoolgirl Jerry sings the middle of the sandwich, the only performance of this song I'm aware of (?)

...the Live Dead archive, not the database. Caution from February '66, but that's only half a sandwich> LOVE the Playin' -> Supplication -> Playin' from 9-24-76 on the Cow Palace bonus disc.
