Who's up for a revolutionary evolutionary ride? DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, NEW YORK 1/2/70 captures the Grateful Dead as they make their first foray from the experimental 60s into their early 70s acoustic Americana period. Yes, this one is a little bit country and a little bit (psychedelic) rock and roll.

When the "Magnificent Seven" - Pigpen on percussion, T.C. on keys - first took the stage on 1/2/70, evidence was clear that the trip was about to take a turn. From their western wears to the twang in Jerry’s “broken-string blues,” it appeared they'd brought the Bakersfield sound to the Big Apple. They worked through much of what would become Workingman's Dead, stunning the crowd with laid-back numbers like "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones," and "Black Peter." Just the same, they satisfied 60s stalwarts with magical versions of "Dark Star," "St. Stephen," and "That's It For The Other One." Sonic alchemy, indeed!

DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 30: FILLMORE EAST, NEW YORK, New York 1/2/70 has been rounded out with a bit of 1/3/70 (the subscribers-only bonus disc features the bulk of 1/3/70). It was recorded by the great Owsley "Bear" Stanley and has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

My guess is that it will be shows spread over a period of years from a common geographical location. That whole chrono-synclastic infundibulum thing Bolo referenced and all. Still wondering about the Kesey's Thunder Machine reference as well. Looking forward to getting the announcement, I suspect that we are due for it pretty soon.

For those that were able to figure out the overtly easy Bolo clues.. paradise waits. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something this week. Does anyone know if the GD newsletter or whatever they call it is released on a somewhat predictable schedule? I think (slip) knot! My guess is they will deliver to us a one two punch sometime soon.

Have a great end of the weekend all.. it rained like hell today here, it was so nasty and cold I couldn't bring it to myself to anything productive.. so I did a deep soak, grabbed a couple of beers and relistened to disc 3 with headphones in the hot tub. A great way to waste the day and I got more out of it than I did the previous three or four listens. A mighty fine release.. on to 31!

Reno 74

I attended the Reno 74 show of this day's anniversary, and I remember it being an odd show. It was an early wall of sound show, and also the band seemed to have a hard time getting a head of steam. At the time, it seemed like part of the issue was they were not getting much feedback from the crowd. But I was only 20, so that may have just been my imagination.

DaP 30 1/3/70 Bonus disc + filler

Had a couple long drives yesterday, enough time to listen to all of the 1/3/70 material, which I put in order it was played, so a shorter Early Show, but phenomenal. Morning Dew is just fantastic! Again, what's most striking to me about this release is the dynamics, the (extreme) shifts in loud to soft and to excruciatingly loud (in a good way). Morning Dew is a perfect exemplar of that, and Jerry maximizes it vocally as well. Love the gongs, they add a lot to Dew, as does TC, who is just great on everything on the release. Cold Rain & Snow was good, but this was a case where I didn't dig the dynamics as much, I like a ripping CR&S, one with Phil's bass pumping. Alligator is great, love the Feedback as well, very melodic Feedback with great drum interplay, one I will actually revisit (only other one I listen to about every time I put the show on is 10/20/68 from 30 Trips). The China Cat jamming in Alligator was fun. The Late Show is, again, the place for the real magic, and the place where my zeal for this release began. I listened to 1/3 on the Archive a few weeks back, and the That's It For The Other One blew me away, and I remember the Dancing in the Street did, too. So, when I got the release and got through the first 2 discs (minus the 1/3 tracks), I wasn't all that impressed. The TIFTOO suite was lackluster on 1/2, especially in direct comparison with the next night's furious rendition. Disc 3 totally saved it from being a middling Pick. The Bonus Disc makes this one a top 10 Pick for me. The Cryptical ending on 1/2 is a nice soft segue to Cosmic Charlie, but on 1/3 they pull out our old friend Dynamics and Jerry resurrects the "well, he had to die" from soft and plaintive over a spare guitar part to loud and angry as the music swells behind his fury, and the Cosmic Charlie that results is much more driving. Dancing in the Street is the non-Dark Star or Other One highlight. This is one of the loosest versions with the crowd interaction, but the jam is just on fire. St Stephen> Midnight Hour features a better St Stephen than the previous night and a sudden segue to Midnight Hour that allows Pigpen to close it down in style, as he did the night before with Lovelight. Since I ended my previous review having only listened to the first few minutes of that beast, let throw in some more words about that Lovelight: Wow, that was a great one. But it could have been even better. Pig's shouts of "Wait a minute" interrupted the band just as they were about to take flight three times. Luckily they got over that, and the jam that he allowed to flow from there was spectacular. Phil did a Franklin's like riff that I loved, and dug it when Jerry joined in and they picked up on that for a bit. That disc 3 and bonus disc are amazing. The first 2 discs are pretty good.

Also, I started on DaP 9 5/14/74 and so far through It Must Have Been the Roses, they're playing really well. The sound issues are cleared up quickly in Bertha, far more quickly than 5/17, 19, and 21. Everything seems dialed in by Me & My Uncle which gets a lot of applause. Nice to hear the crowd in Montana on the soundboard. You can tell Phil is enjoying the Wall with his bomb drops on the A in Loser. Can't wait for the Playing, I remember that as one of my favorites, and I have a ways to go before that dark Dark Star... But so far, I can see why people have this one in their top 5, based on the sound quality and playing quality on what I've listened to on first set songs.

Since we now have 30 Picks, I may try to break down my top 10, middle 10, and bottom 10 sometime prior to the next release, giving each Pick at least one more listen before then.

The whole first set except opening Promised Land and closing Casey Jones... I don't know what the correlation is between tapers section releases and imminent releases from Dave..... I hope you are right, I would love that whole run to be released...

What a bummer. Heard over the weekend he was in the hospital. These guys got me hooked into bluegrass in 2001-2002 era, and I was lucky to see them a bunch in the early aughts. Jeff was unquestionably the leader of that band. He was a great songwriter and a better singer. Time to put on an old Yonder show.

The link to the book was cool. It reminds me of the stories I have had traveling with the dead in the 80's. It is like losing a faithful dog that was always there to make sure you were ok. You never forget those times. Some people may think it's just a concert but it was more then that. Those people would not understand unless they were there.

About that 74

I told you all I have been exploring 1974 much more since accepting the sonic issues that go along with it. I'm full blown rampage now, which is ironic considering my last full blown rampage was 1974.

I have also observed there are only about a half-dozen Dark Stars from 74. That is almost a criminal act.

What I don't get is the popularity of DaP 2 Dillon Stadium. Awful audio. Is it simply because it's hard to get that it's so expensive on eBay? The show doesn't sound like anything special to me, maybe the poor audio is not helping. Can we all agree it's one of the worst sounding shows of 74?

And I will be needing rankings of all Eyes of the World from this year. I've come to the conclusion that they are the best ones, but if 73 needs to be included then so be it. Not interested in two drummer Eyes unless it's One from the Vault.

Greek Theatre, 15, 16, 17 July 1988 just arrived today. It doesn't sound as good as a Normanized Plangent deal, but it sounds pretty good for a radio broadcast. Six discs for a little over thirty dollars.

Slaked my thirst while waiting for the box announcement. Not to mention the announcement is just the dangling of the carrot... the ship date can't be before Fall '19, at this point.

Jerry's vocal on the seldom played "Believe It Or Not," is extremely soulful. I'm just sayin'.

1974 Eyes

9/11 at Alexandra Palace is a good one. Very long, very spacy. After 1974 they always seemed in too much of a hurry when they played it. The 1976 ones especially-too fast, too short. And that seemed to set the template for the song for ever after.

Gonna catch Dead & Company in ATL this weekend. Saw the Stones last Friday, first and only time for me. Worth it! Amazing that Mick had a valve in his heart replaced two months ago, he was all over the stage non-stop like it was the 70s. I got winded putting on the t-shirt I bought at the show.

Here's an article I had just read before coming over here, and, sure enough it's already being discussed. I can't believe UMG lost millions of masters and were able to keep it silent for 11 years. The exceedingly long list of artists who were impacted is truly sad. Buddy Holly, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, The Who, Tom Petty, The Carter Family, even a Martin Luther King, Jr speech that was recorded and released. Decca and Chess records. Unbelievable. Who knows what kind of brilliant work lay unreleased and unheard until the conflagration meant they would never be heard.

Also, I remember Dave made a joke on the Hofheinz 11/18/72 release page about not being able to hear Hoyt Axton Explodes without a turntable, though now it may be impossible for them to even think about a re-release as his masters are also thought to have been destroyed. I hope the artists get a massive settlement from UMG, which is worth $33 billion.

All in the family

In All in the family season 6 'Archie, the babysitter'. Gloria hires a babysitter and the babysitters boyfriend who comes over to hang out with her, brings over 2 albums. One is Blues for Allah and the other is the rolling stones. You can see both sides of B.F.A album with jerry and the band and the front pretty clearly. The boyfriend says " I brought over the grateful dead and the Rolling stones" and Archie says "yeah I've heard of those grave diggers before". Good episode.

Listening to the Englishtown half step this morning and towards the end of an absolutely fantastic version was brought to tears during the Rio grande refrain at the thought of that father and daughter picture from earlier this week .

I think you have to at least put 6/18/74 on the list of top performances in the 73/74 period.

I have to say.. although I do like 73/74 versions the most.. it is one of the few songs where the rearrangement did not ruin it for me. There are some true gems post hiatus. I believe it to be one of the better original songs in their cannon. When I used to hear the opening chords at shows, I perked up a bit and paid attention. It rarely disappointed.
