A recent op-ed piece by Brian Riedl (Heritage Foundation) alleges that $600 million taxpayer dollars are going toward the Grateful Dead Archives. While I'd gladly contribute $2 bucks (my share) towards this endeavor, I wonder if there is truth to this?Peace, Fred

I am waiting on someone and figured I'd kill some time trying a bit more. ---I kinda ran on here, have that tendency, so maybe just scan it and I'll try one last thing later and make a more concise summery report--- There seems to be no pattern, hit & miss. One image I never get the scaled pic even at 72 dpi. It is the largest physical size pic as it is an 8x10 photo scanned in, cropped and resized to the 600x400 limit but as you lower the res the physical size, if printed, grows and maybe that has something to do with it??? But shouldn't since it is only 63 KB. When I upload the one and only that has worked so far it worked again & I see the scaled pic. Try another and maybe, the one again and no, yet another n maybe... I don't freakin' get it. I did one I don't care about at 72 dpi and saw the scaled image after upload, hit preview, did not see it other than the scaled, clicked submit and it was there like it is supposed to be. Tried doing what I did for the first and only successful one so far and it did not work this time with another pic at 200, 100 or 72 dpi, same pic at the different res. I deleted that one, tried a few others with clicking on submit, 72 & 100 dpi and they only gave me the scaled image after uploading and nothing when I submitted, I deleted those too. I just did one with uploading the very first taper's tic again, upload, saw scale, upped a different one also at 200 dpi, saw scaled, submitted and I see it like it is supposed to work. I stopped since it appeared to work, left that window open and came back here. Still have not learned anything really definitive other than possibly flaky system never showing in preview, sometimes showing the scaled image after uploading and sometimes showing correctly after submitting. I'm thinking if it does not show after submitting it did not make it to your queue, can't be published and it does not matter if it was the first normal attempt of my goofiness. (Addition after “ending” before posting of course is I think maybe an extra long file name does not work, one had 43 characters and no go, and that ‘ in the file name is ok but not & because when I changed & to _ and shortened as I say somewhere here it seemed to work. Also I tried adding “&” in an already short file name and it would not show the scaled image after uploading before submitting nor show after submitting). Before posting this I tried to do another one and now no matter what no scaled image after uploading, tried a few over and over but never submitted. Kept at it cause nothing else to do right, hello buddy where are you LOL, and going around trying to up 4 different ones, including the one that has worked, one that appears to have worked and 2 others and never had one pic show in scaled and when I got one of the 2 I'm trying to submit to show scaled after uploading I submitted but then it did not show so I deleted it. Sorry this got a bit long going round in circles adding more notes as I went trying to figure this out without success while still waiting on someone after WOW I did not realize it has been 2.5 hours since your post above Mary. Went to the topics page of this part of the forum to see since it shows time since last post. It would be nice if there were timestamps next to the posting date. This is getting nerve racking and this sort of thing is part of my job. I am really thinking there is something flaky with the system as that would explain why the same pic would work one time, not another, then yes... and also possibly partly why the no image in the queue is not uncommon. I stepped away from this for a bit and tried the one that never showed a scaled image after uploading. It was a kinda long file name although I have seen longer here before but that could be before image limits, pixels, res & size might have changed. I shortened and still no go. It had an "&" in the name and when I change it to a hyphen I saw the scaled image. Could be coincidence but I tried replacing the & with _ in the long file name and no go but first try with _ instead of & with shorter file name and I saw the scaled image. It did not preview, no surprise there since none have yet, and it did not show when I submitted. I tried the first "trick" from a few days ago and no then around an around I went again and now I see it after submitting. Ooops this grew some more while experimenting, getting a little frustrated but persevering and noting since brain death occurred a little bit ago and I'm not totally remembering all I did so I'll refer back to this later. Hopefully the two I think worked today, one right after your last post Mary and the 2nd just a little bit ago, that I see correctly after submitting is in the queue and you only see those 2 not all the other attempts that I deleted too. Ahh finally the call I've been waiting for, time to chill and officially start the weekend :)

I wonder if there is a problem with the system today since what I did the first time does not appear to be working this time, resubmit with orig open and then saw full image under view even though it was not on my account homepage yet until the image is approved. Oh well try again next week, have a good weekend.

I just submitted a 200 dpi version of what I tried yesterday and earlier today. Still no image even at the view tab/screen as though I was editing it from my account home page. I thought it showed up last time. I wonder if there is something else going on today since it has been hit and miss whether I see the scaled image or not after clicking on upload, before submitting since I've only hit submit twice so far from the same one today. If still no good I'll scrap this one.

I think because it is not released yet so the location it might be pointing to in the preview does have it yet until submitting??? After the first 300 dpi failure I was at the edit screen (had left the window open after submitting since it was not showing at my account page yet until it is released I do believe), upped a 200 dpi version, hit preview, saw nothing other than the scaled image until I hit submit and then at the view tab/screen I saw it. But that is a little different than the initial submit since that is like say everything is ok and one went to their account page and clicked on one of their fan photos to edit the title, description or change the photo. And one can't do that until release unless they leave the window open after submitting like I did. It appears 250 and I think 225 are no good too but lil confused since I was not getting the scaled image either after uploading the 250 one yesterday or the 225 one today. I resubmitted at 225 like I did for the first one at 300. I left the window open after submitting, uploaded the other version and hit submit. But testing at 225 since 200 works. I tried a couple of new test ones without clicking on submit and no preview or scaled image. Stepped away for a few then tried another test one and still no preview but the scaled image was there. Again I did not click on submit there, trying to avoid messing with your queue. I see only 2 more tests. The one I did yesterday and today I'll retry one last time at 200, still left the window open after hitting submit yesterday, then go to a new one at 225 but I'm thinking 200 dpi is the limit.

Congrats. No worries they'll get back to you with your winnings. For me, the pride was enough.

P.S. RT 4.1 was gravy. I won 2010 Day 5. I still have the screenshot.

Hello,
I have a very nice oil on canvas painting of PigPen that was done by Paul Pernish in 1967 that once hung in a coffee shop on California Avenue in Palo Alto, California where the band used to hang out. The band knows this painting and it is stunning. It was a part of the John Bolles collection at one time. John Bolles was the architect that designed Candlestick Park, as well as many other San Francisco area landmarks. This painting is very well known and has real Grateful Dead, Bay Area, and artistic history. I'm interested in selling it and don't know if this site, or where on this site, would be the best place to do that. Would you, or someone, please help me. You can also pm me and I can send pictures. It really is quite special. Thank you in advance for your help. Peter

I'd do some internet searches for recent auctions of Dead memorabilia (there have been some notable ones lately as people's estates come up, etc.) and get in touch with the relevant auction houses. Also I see recent auctions of Pernish's work in a quick Google search, so I think it might be worth your while to research this a bit.

Thank you for your response and ideas. I was hoping to find a fan that would want it. And this place is full of them. Is there not a place on the site to post something like this? Plus with auctions you have to pay a percentage and I'd rather sell the painting for less to someone that really wants it. Again, thank you very much for your help. Here is a linke to eBay where I have it posted if you are interested in seeing it - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Grateful-Dead-Painting/253990201481

Just got the notification for Dave's Picks vol 29 and was very excited to purchase only to find the release already sold out. This has happened a number of times......the 77 Colgate University Show was another I missed out on. Is there any possibility at some point these shows will get released again. Any possibility increasing the release production to 40,000 instead of 20,000. I know the standard solution is to subscribe to the series but I can't afford to do that. Sad to be missing out.

Recently, I have noticed that some of my favorite GD CDs are developing skips and other sound anomalies that previously didn't exist. It has happened on DP vol 2, Road trips Boston Music Hall 1976, and GD Movie Soundtrack. Has this ever happened to you? Is it just that the discs are poor quality? Heartbreaking when it is sometimes hard to find a replacement. Any answers? Thanks in advance.

In the interviews I’ve seen with Jerry he always claimed that the band was not about politics, nor did he try to tell people what to think or do. This is discussed in the Long Strange Trip Movie.
So don’t try to claim that you know what Jerry would want.
But, I understand your point.

Were the CD’s stored in your house or car?
A hot car will ruin CDs.
Make CD-R backups to listen to, and store a copy, or 2,3,4,5, or more, on multiple hard drives. Safety in numbers.

In Hunter Seamons matrix soundboard recording for the Barton Hall Show - at the 7:07 mark, someone in the audience says something and it's hard to decipher what was said. Any thoughts, after giving a listen, would be greatly appreciated. It's on the Archive Site with a date of Jan 11, 2011. It almost sounds like "got it nice' but not sure.

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

Thanks for sharing this post i really like this post

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.
https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1970/12/31?source=88719

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

I posted this in the taper forum, but thought this may be the better spot (also, patience is not a virtue of mine). I am sure this exists in written form somewhere, I just can't seem to find it.

What is the official band policy for trading in shows that have been officially released? Specifically, I am wondering about the ones that were released officially but are out of print. Seems to me that if they are not for sale currently, we would not be costing the band money by trading those shows. In fact, the only folks it would cost are those selling the out of print releases at a profit on the secondary market. Just curious what the official policy is on this considering the volume of official releases these days.

It's late on a Sunday and that means bed soon, but since my quick reply to TD's inquiry below, I've been further thinking about the tragedy of Pig - and I certainly think of it that way despite the manifest personal responsibility for the consequences of near incessant alcohol abuse from a young age. It's a spiraling decline that seems particularly pathos-laden given the picture of a gentle, genial man that emerges from all the familiar documentary sources.

I take notes or attempt to catalogue page references by subject from my little library of the Dead, but realize I've done a poor job on this particular subject - and certainly during the general time frame implied by TD's question. So, I wanted to share a couple relevant - and heartbreakingly poignant - passages from Jackson's "Garcia/American Life" that I've revisited since:

First, McIntire speaking: "I remember one day Garcia coming into my office and saying, 'Look, I'm really worried about Pig. I think his life is in danger, and I want to do whatever we can. The band'll pay for everything. Let's find out if there's anything we can do.' So I researched it and I found out the most famous place in the world for liver problems was Sheila Sherlock's clinic in London. But my doctor, Sandor Bernstein, said there was a guy at UCSF [University of California and San Francisco] who was as good. So we slotted Pig with him. And Pig jumped in and did, too. He stopped drinking and he learned all the things about nutrition that he could. He really tried, but it was too late."

And second: "[On the tour] he rode on the hard bus, this Danish bus, which was sort of like the crew bus," Annette Flowers said. "It was the quieter of the two buses usually. Pigpen lived on the back bench of that bus. ... I think that trip sort of sunk it for him; put him over. It was really grueling in a lot of ways." "He got knocked off that bench five or six times," Rock Scully recalled. "He rolled off that bench and a couple of times he really hurt himself I could see it; he really hurt his kidneys and bruised himself. I'd have to help him off the bus."

"He really tried, but it was too late." A short, simple statement, but one that can put fault lines in even a strong foundation. I recall reading that Pig sent Veronica away as his condition became increasingly acute, which, in light of other information, clearly underscores what a lonely and frankly terrifying period those final 12-18 months must have been for that kindhearted soul./K
