So many things to say and remember. This man had a profound impact on my life. I will always remain grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic in the music he shared. Miss you but your spirit still lives on.

I'm surprised that I've never seen a mention here of the JGB cd "Don't Let Go" from Orpheum '76. I can feel Jerry in every note....clean clear and beautiful (guitar and vocal). I have had nights when i couldnt get out of my truck after arriving home listening to it. "Thats What Love Will Make You Do" is the very essence of Jerry. God bless. Get a copy.

My 1st show was Englishtown 77 2nd was a Garcia band show at the old Suffolk Forum on L.I. March 12 1978. At both of those shows I got the distinct impression Jerry was playing directly to me. I was up close at both shows. He was the only guy that could make a huge gig seem intimate.Happy birthday Jer and thanks for inspiring me and many others. The world was a better place with you in it

high above the clouds, higher than eagles are soaring, standing on the moon, we see the splintered sunrise and there he is, like a beacon of hope and love, the Jack of Diamonds is our King of Hearts.

Hope you and Hunter share a jug of “Retsin” Wine (since I hear it sparks Hunters writing skills!
—Listening to Jerry Garcia & John Kahn’s Ritz theater 1/24/1986 acoustic show (dang that I missed that show).
- saw Hunter & Garcia play together my very _first JGB show_ ! I recall it was at LI’s “Calderone theater” where Hunter joined Jerry for encore to the “early show.” If I recall song correctly, one of three songs they played was from Hunters solo album: “Lady from Carlisle” a Terrapin-esque “lady with a fan” themed tune. Was my destiny to catch some truly historic shows in 1979 & 1980!
0- Binghamton 5/1979 first GD ( Brent Midland premier tour)).
1- Red Rocks Morrison, CO 8/12/1979
2- March(?)1980- (my first Jerry Garcia Band show) Garcia & Hunter play together for 2-3 encore songs ❤️
3- October 29,1980 - Radio City pow!
Saw many great shows from 1979-1994 (50-ish) but these 3 are hard to top!
FWIW- a suggested song for Jerry’s 78th birthday: It captures Jerry’s brilliance, in spirit, like no other. Thx RH! ,
“Down the Road” (R. Hunter) on Mickey Hart’s “Mystery Box!”

Jerry was just a regular guy with a gift from the Universe to help us in this world of woe.
The handful of times I met Jerry I was impressed with how easygoing he could be. Part of the reason it was 1970 through 74. The most intimate of any setting I saw him perform was a weeknight in February 74 at Keystone Berkeley with Merl Saunders. I rode my 10 speed bike over from Oakland and arrived early. The only two people in the Keystone were the bartender and Jerry having a beer. I smiled and said hello and Jerry was his beaming beneficent self and returned the greeting. It was just that simple easygoing exchange of kindness and respect and nothing more. He finished his beer and went backstage that was way in the back of the building. The stage itself was to the left of the front door just in from the sidewalk on University Avenue.
A while later when the music started the “crowd” peaked at around 25 people. The only two people who danced the duration of the show were myself and a vivacious blond woman with super long hair. What stands out about that night was how few people were in attendance and how relaxed the night was.
Truly a golden memory.
Alas another time from the Golden Eternity.

I did not know the man except through the musings of those who did. The musician brought me amazing places inside and outside myself I didn't know existed. The saddest part to me is that because of the Prophet, every venue he played was a house of worship to me, bringing me closer to a higher power than I had ever felt before. Yet it was the Prophet who made him a reluctant, ultra-powerful, and famous public figure which I can imagine in my nightmares was the worst thing about being Jerry Garcia, the lack of privacy beyond the normal lack of and the nightmare which other musicians, actors, and sports figures must endure as a price for their chosen crafts and skills at them. If I met Jerry tomorrow, I might give a nod or tip my cap but much as I would want to speak with him, I would respect his privacy let him be.
