Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Just wondering if anyone at all has had any success in actually placing an order yet?

What went wrong first time around?
As I understand it, some tunes on the original 3 LP set were later overdubbed (particularly vocals). Why was that and if it was really necessary how can this version largely avoid this, bearing in mind the source tapes are the same?

I feel a bit ripped off. I always get emails about new releases but didn't on this one. I might pay that kind of money for the whole boxed set but for just the music, I'll have to pass. This kind of money deserves all the extra goodies!

He's probably FLASHBACK are these cheap greatest hits type packages...like that could satisfy any kind of a real grateful dead fan...i couldn't imagine listening to their hits like that a single disc on 8-10 songs only...i guarantee 99% of the deadheads don't buy it but more of the new people coming in will...then they'll toss it for the dog to play with it and get dicks picks.

He's probably correct about the price...Flashback is a cheap series of greatest hits so it's not really a great deal...a good introduction if your just landing on earth.

Took the track listing: Truckin'; China Cat Sunflower; Unbroken Chain; U.S. Blues; Music Never Stopped, The; Shakedown Street; Alabama Getaway; Throwing Stones; Standing On the Moon; Touch of Grey: pulled the tracks off the original CDs, burned them to a blank CD, so now I have "Flashback" before its release, but I'll give this to one of my non head friends in my unending quest to turn more people on to "The Music and The Band." On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

Europe 72 promises complete shows, if i remember alot of dead heads wanted complete shows rather than just best tracks from a leg of tour period...i think dick said before he died that dead heads would be better off with the best tracks of a leg rather than a complete show but generally a complete show has the same set up and your not suffering through changes of loudness and differences in seperations from one track to the next...i'm more comfortable with a complete show and if it's not complete at least mostly complete...i don't mind a bonus disc of random shows and songs or another disc trying to elongnate a show with one off tracks from a leg which serves a great purpose...the beauty of Europe 72 it will be every show and some soundchecks from what i heard...so once again you'll have every note of a tour...maybe the only time you'll ever say that...the fillmore was just that residency not a leg or a complete tour at all

Gans said on Sundays 'Golden Road' that there were still full box sets available. Kind of hysterical if you look back at all the panicky 'I'm getting screwed' posts from January. In some weird parallel universe, the Dead would be the house band on the Titanic. Imagine those creeps double whammy when they cryed like hell to get on board and now are fighting to get off. They would have taken all the lifeboats 'just in case' and then would dole out their excess seats, making sure the world knew of their humanitarian deeds.

Come to think of it, I would think they would play Stagger Lee as their last song before going down. Anyone know why? Helena Buckett- great call on the Illustrated Trips book. It is incredible. And amazon had one almost new for under $20.

"great call on the Illustrated Trips book. It is incredible. And amazon had one almost new for under $20." I first saw it in the local library and it is so cool I went shopping for a copy figuring it would be expensive. Turned out not to be the case. That was the best money I've spent on a book in a long time, and the amazon marketplace is great.

As I am probably one of the only (if not THE only) person who actually received a code for a personalized box set and never used it, I thought you would appreciate reading this update from an email I just received from Dead.net: Hey now! We've noticed that we sent you your unique code to order the Europe '72: The Complete Recordings boxed set but you have not yet placed your order. So here is another code for you to use. Because you were on the reservation list early (thank you!), and because there are only a very few left to order, we want to make sure that you have every chance possible to get yours before they are gone. Please use your new unique order code by this Wednesday, March 4th at noon PT or else the boxed set reserved for you will be offered to someone on the waiting list. We don't want you to be disappointed. This is your final reminder! - - - - - Well, good news for some of you...... there is a waiting list! And even better news for someone else...... I have posted before about my turn off with this whole process, both in the way it has seemed to turn what was a loving community that came together in song and celebration into an "all about me" consumer driven virtual reality, as well as the fact that offering this kind of a box set seems to move in the wrong ecological direction and is void of earth awareness that I thought was firmly established in this "family" long ago. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9um_flYGjg So, if you are interested in receiving this code to order YOUR PERSONALIZED box set, here is what it will take: 1) Send me a private message through Dead.net telling me what environmental organization or cause you would be willing to donate to and why? (what is the work they are doing that your donation will support?) 2) How much you would be willing to contribute to this organization or cause 3) How you intend on notifying me of your donation (like forwarding me the email that thanks you for your donation of......) I will go down the list of people who respond first / or I feel are most likely to follow through based on your response. I will also be checking your Dead.net profile as well so if you do not have a long standing profile here, then sorry to say you would not be in consideration. For The Earth, Brother "A"

Another good read in anticipation of the Europe'72 box set is from Dennis McNally's "A Long Strange Trip". Read chapter 37, Bozos Abroad (3/72 - 12/72) pages 424 thru 436. He gives a good accout of this tour. This whole book is very good in my opinion.

Dear Mr. highvibe, For The Earth, Brother “A”, Please let us know if you actually bequeath the code to someone, and provide some details on how you made your decision from all of the respondents, and what specific things they promised that made you chose that person. This would be very interesting to all of us, I am sure. Thank you in advance.

you don't have any offers, isn't there something else that you could ask for? Like jump through a loop of fire, first male born off spring, you could make it a little harder to obtain your code by asking for more, I don't know but I think your code should go back to the ptb so it can go to someone on the waiting list, if there is still one. Just my opinion.

Well, I just ordered using an "expired" code. Order says it is the complete recordings (doesn't say "music only") so is this the box set, or the music only set? Also, my CC was charged, but I thought it wouldn't be charged until shipping? Anybody help me understand?

1. box set 2. as much explained in previous responses, a hold gets put on the funds for a few days to make sure the card is legit. plan accordingly (as in, make sure the funds are on the card or the order won't go through). the funds will be released in a few days and the card will not be charged for real until shipping time.

Looks like unused codes are going to be reclying themselves for a few weeks yet so at least some of those people who believed they had missed out on the full monty will get a nice surprise. I suspect there are still a large number of people holding off on making a commitment on buying the box until they are a 100% certain they can take the $450 hit on getting this. They may also have been operating under the belief that only the music-only option was now available, so what's the rush? It would be interesting to know if they would still be in with a chance of getting the full box if they made the purchase now.

So now that the miracle personalized box set code has been passed on, what ¿ is ? everyone doing for the environment? If we were all doing something already, especially if it related to our scene, it would have been easy to send a quick PM to highvibe about it and get in line for that code, which will be one of the first 3000, btw. I still think set # 1972 should be donated to some central repository for all to enjoy; as another suggestion, how about the Library of Congress' Folkways Collection, which Mickey has done so much with and for, as an honor to him? An important point is, if you always give, you will always have; withholding does not enrich us. But, with all our exuberance about the release of this amazing set of shows, we'd all look pretty silly if there was no plastic to make the discs (petroleum product), or power to run the players to decode the HDCD signal on. If we keep in touch with what's happening, a community this size could help sway the direction we take to make sure what we enjoy continues to be possible, for example, by voting with our pocketbooks to turn our energy production to truly sustainable sources, like, duh! the Sun, and wind. Does anyone remember the Shoshone Invocation that starts out Mickey's Rolling Thunder? First, it starts with three greeting whoops, which I'm sure we could all relate to, then: To the east, where the sun rise To the north, where the cold comes from To the south, where the light comes To the west, where the sun sets To the father sun, to the mother earth Its not that the energy companies don't know about sustainable power sources, its that they are so invested in their current oil mining, processing and delivery infrastructure, and yes, are lazy and uncaring, that they dare not or don't care enough to take some of their billions in profits to start to convert until they are forced to. So one of the things we do is to buy 100% equivalent monthly usage credits from our power company in green power: wind, solar and biomass energy production. My work campus was the first existing building complex in the U.S. to become green-certified and, following their example, I tried for two years to get our power company to follow through on their advertised program to sell green equivalent credits, which finally paid off. We even got a bumper sticker. If enough users pay a little extra for a while, it will be more and more easy for the ptb—in this case, power companies that be—to start offering all green power and get us off the planet's battery (fossil fuels) that got us this far in the first place. Or, at least, stop all this noise about "clean" coal! I also recommend GizMag.com as a daily newsletter source for interesting things of all types, but with several good articles a week on environmental issues, like the liquid gas substitute that has been invented in England which is a hydride-based fuel which burns with no carbon emmissions: http://www.gizmag.com/breakthrough-promises-150-per-gallon-synthetic-ga… There was another GizMag story on how a new metal alloy can be (injection) molded, like plastic, while being twice as strong. Might have an application for CDs or LPs (which are making a come back), in case we run out of vinyl. Lots of good new bicycle innovation news here, too, for you cyclers. Sign up for their newsletter at http://www.gizmag.com/newsletter/ OK, what else? We had a nice little SONY QBrick system for a while in our basement office, but when it was time to completely redesign our bookshelf in a window alcove and put something really good in, I wired in two dedicated 20-amp switchable plugs, one on either side, to plug in two 8-outlet transformer spaced power-protected strips. The 20-amp versions had to be ordered, but regular 15-amp switchable outlets are available in most hardware stores. Our tiny but very powerful Pro-ject Box components use a lot of vampire transformers and I was determined to wire in the switched outlets to "meet myself halfway" to make it easy to turn off all power drain during the 90% of the time we're not using the system. From Forbes' Thoughts On The Business Of Life: "Habits make the best servants or the worst masters." It only takes flipping a mental switch to get our habits on the best servants side of that equation. Just for fun, take a look at Pro-ject boxes at: http://www.sumikoaudio.net/project/products/project_design_boxes.htm Sumiko is based in Berkeley. Play your Pro-ject boxes into: http://www.rega.co.uk/html/RS1.htm. Finally, there's no real advantage in berating anyone, even through parody, for practicing and sharing their passions, which is really what Dead.net is all about! Hopefully we'll all run into a good Chrono-Synclastic Infundibulum, one day (defined in Vonnegut, Sirens of Titan, page 8, as a place where we can all understand each other perfectly), but until then, Dead.net could be a pretty good place to hang out, especially if we all take the time to consider all opinions and think before finding a hopefully positive way to respond! Cheers, Laser

Hi laser and Highvibe. I do not mean to be argumentative but a few points: Laser you ask what is everyone doing for the environment? And that they could have PM'ed Highvibe an itemization of their actions on that issue. Irregardless of how passionate Highvibe is regarding the Earth that code should have simply been given away or allowed to expire. Instead Highvibe's passion allowed that code to lead to a litmus test questionnaire to prove who is most environmentally concerned and to prove it by making a $ contribution to an organization deemed worthy by Highvibe. The biggest, $$$$$$$$$$ contribution, and most worthy donor would receive (drum roll) -- the code. Uh, excuse me, but that code does not belong to Highvibe if he/she is not buying the E72. To the contrary, it belongs to Dead.net, or the community of fans. That is where it should return to. That did not happen. What happened was an actual extortion. "Pay the $$$ to an "Org" I deem worthy and it is yours!" That is inappropriate. In fact it is a Shakedown! How ever worthy the cause or organization it should not have been done like that. Also Laser you find some of the funny comments in response to Highvibes post to be 'parody' which is' berating' someone for being passionate about a cause. Respectfully, you are taking it a bit too seriously. A sense of humor is a good thing, and after a post like Highvibes, the comments in response were quite natural. Yet Laser when you write something like "by voting with our pocketbooks to turn our energy production to truly sustainable sources, like, duh! the Sun," well, that could invite more parody, especially the 'duh' part. Highvibe for you to write: "I will go down the list of people who respond first / or I feel are most likely to follow through based on your response." Oh come down off of your throne! LOL! You are behaving like an Emperor,a bit anyway. It reminds me of something I heard during the Massachusetts senate race for the seat held by the Late Senator Ted Kennedy when some were upset that "Ted Kennedy's seat' could go to a Republican.. Someone, Scott Brown? said that it is the people's seat! That is kind of how I feel about the code. It should not be auctioned off to the 'most worthy.' Still it' s not a war crime. Just a mistake IMHO. Nuances are somewhat lost in the blogesphere so please do not think my tone here to be angry or combative. It is humor. Satire. Maybe too much time on my hands too. It's a good thing said Martha Stewart. Another Dead Head like A. Coulter perhaps? If ever I meet you guys at a show I'll buy you a beer. Peace. BTW enjoyed rereading the Shoshone quote, had forgotten about that.

is Monday 09/05/11If this project is completed and ready for shipping, Tuesday September 6, 2011 should be the earliest day of shipping out, in my humble opinion. Still a bit in advance, but time is moving quickly for me. I successfully placed an order on January 24 2011, it is for a personalized box set. That day *seems* so long ago... Patience is a Virtue, but I want to hear a well mixed Set 1 of the Bickershaw Festival - 05/07/72 asap. Patience is a Virtue.

Well said Deadegad, I thought the same thing, just don't toss out negative vibes to other fans. That one did get my attention. A pile of the the Europe 72 box sets will be on Ebay and Graigslist in October, they will bring a nice price I'm sure. Anyone that has a code and does not want to commit to buy should simply pass it on. I'm going to keep myself busy until the doorbell rings and someone hands me my copy. I cannot resist coming back to this thread just to see what's going down. Scored Phish tix today, life will go on. Take it easy folks. Coconut Phil, living Free.

That's Right While we try our hardest for accuracy, we were a bit off in our original count of the CDs included in the Europe '72 boxed set. Now that we're rolling full-steam ahead on the mixing and mastering of the boxed set, we've decided to not break up any segued jam sequences that took place on the tour to squeeze the longer shows onto 3 CDs per show, nor will we be re-sequencing any shows to make them fit onto 3 CDs. What this means is that several shows will need to be bumped up to 4 CDs per show, resulting in the boxed set now containing 72 CDs, an increase from the 60+ discs we originally told you. No, that number is not a gimmick, it just happened that 72 is where the final tally landed, much to our surprise. Sure hope you don't mind...
