Hold on to your hat, we're coming in strong with one from the Windy City that'll have you movin' and shakin' from start to finish. DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 31: UPTOWN THEATRE, CHICAGO, IL 12/3/79 signals a true rebirth of the Grateful Dead, reimagining classics and foreshadowing their 80s sound. This is as much in part due to freshly-minted member Brent Mydland bringing the organ back in as it is to Jerry finding new vivacity with his custom Wolf guitar. New guy, new guitar - it all makes for a heck of a good time!

Set One rolls like never-ending thunder with one standout after another - truly epic versions of "Brown-Eyed Women," "Ramble On Rose," "It's All Over Now," "Althea," and "The Music Never Stopped." Set Two hits with a crack of not-so-lazy lightning, barreling through an outrageous 28-minute "Scarlet>Fire" to a unique “Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance” and wrapping with a "blow the roof off the place" version of "Truckin'" and a rippin' "Johnny B. Goode." Ready for some quiet after the storm? You'll have to wait a just a little bit longer - we've filled in the gap on Disc 3 with a sprinkle of 12/4/79 - "Estimated>Franklin's Tower>" and an incredibly improvised “Jam.”

Limited to 20,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 31: UPTOWN THEATRE, CHICAGO, IL 12/3/79 has been mastered from Dan Healy's cassette recordings to HDCD specs by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering.

I have heard from reliable sources that upon finishing your fourth listen, Rhino will send you by post, duty and shipping free, a hot pink, extra small Jennifer Lopez 2019 tour t-shirt.

    Wear it wisely.
(I feel this might be a ploy to keep deadheads from getting elected into public office, it just takes one selfie and it's over)

    :D

Edit: It took some time, but this is the shirt Rhino sent me. Again, size = small, color = quite pink. Classic, especially if you knew me, I am 6'4

    https://store.jenniferlopez.com/apparel/t-shirts-and-tanks/chambers-t-s…

    Ha.

On the bright side, at least it didn't cost me $90 cash due upon delivery. Then.. because I am cheap, I would have felt obligated to wear it. In public. Several times. Until I felt I got my monies worth. Perhaps there is a god.

Just this second, finished my 3rd listen.....1st thought after reading recent posts....right on Jimbo and also JWild.....Can’t really add anything to that except for the 3rd disc is worth the price of admission alone. I mean seriously if you can’t get into Lost Sailor>SOC>WharfRat>Truckin as its played here then I guess you just can’t get into it, but man....dude......it’s pretty fuckin good! And then the bonus material for 12/4....The prophet is good and I’m a sucker for all Franklins, but that jam......dude?

Edit: can’t find my damn blue Sox?

2nd Edit: I do hope all the heads over the pond get a copy quickly without additional hassle...sound like a clusterfuck...But I think most will enjoy once resolved

Could be, but my guess is someone screwed the pooch and paperwork wasn't filled out correctly. Then again, we are all speculating.

Free trade or not.. they were charging $89 US Dollars for 'shipping' for a $25 product that was purchased, shipping included. I believe this has little to do with trade policy and more to do with a clerical error.

Speaking of which.. my UPS guy tracked me down in my back yard today working my table saw to make me sign for a rhino delivery. It was a "small", pink JLo It's my party 2019 tour T Shirt with a wacky 4 page packing list and WMG Container List sheet that I think says it was supposed to be Grateful Dead / Terrapins Greek. Whatever that means.

I think these good folks, for whatever reason, make mistakes from time to time.

Both these issues sound like a snafus no matter how you look at them (no pun intended). Somebody f'd up.. sending me a small, pink, JLo T-Shirt.. Ha.

As for free trade and tariffs, I'm happy to go on for pages and hours, but another time another place perhaps.

Happy days all, may we all get our music tariff and UPS duty free. As it should be.

I finally finished my first listen, but all this talk about economics has warn me thin, perhaps tomorrow. Lets just say it is not the Frankenstein release it was made out to be.. but not a goldilocks either . It was exactly as I expected it to be.. December 79 at it's finest.. love it or leave it. The reality is, the Betty Boards from this period have been plucked and every show cannot be 2/26/77 or 1/2/70. Expect releases to come from these years from time to time.. it's the way things are going to be for some time to come.. and in hindsight, 2019 was a very good year (with one left to go).

With all the bad hype about Althea, for example, I found Garcia's finger picking extraordinary.. Purposeful tones and great, subtle dexterity and clarity of notes.. even if he was high and the song was played a little slow. Vocals aside his picking was true to form. What a great song, perhaps because of the clean, finger picking style he used. Have we lost the ability to find the diamond in the rough? It was as we should have expected.. a decent release and every now and then we will get a 79 show. As it should be.

The problems with the unfortunate issues European heads are having may not be all Rhino/ WB's fault. For 70 years the world has been slowly and in fits and starts moving toward free trade. As I'm sure most know the basic idea is to remove blocks, jams bureaucracy interfering with trade between countries. The improvement for the world economy and the people has been for the most part phenomenally good. 1 extreme benefit is the fact that in 1950 70% of the world didn't have enough calories to eat to even hope for a chance at a semi heathy life. Now that number is 5%. Asia has been fully removed from the list the only area left is Africa. The point of my long-winded post is we still have a long way to go before trade and distribution look like the EU let alone between the various states. Tarrifs, distribution rules, bureaucratic rules, union rules still mess things up thus the mistakes or even the way things are currently designed ie. supposed to work are what's responsible for the issues our European brothers and sisters are frustratingly dealing with. Unfortunately in the past several years we have been speeding backwards on trade

Been through it once and most of it twice. Enough to comment.

Perfectly fine show. Not fantastic, but not awful either. As a fan of Althea & Scarlet, the lyrical disaster on both songs is disappointing. But hardly some anomoly in GD shows. Heck, they had to stop doing St. Stephen & Help because Jerry couldn't keep the lyrics straight & those songs need the verses in the right order.

I do like the fact that Dave was willing to go for a cassette master. Sound quality, even with the patches, was not an issue for me. I am sure that opens up more shows for selection. Though those types of issues are easier to swallow with an exceptional show. Which this is not in my view. Still, there are high points (Music!).

But I get where Dave is coming from. Variety, for me, means more than just the year of the release. It means the type of release. Every release cannot be a show that is widely acclaimed & widely circulated. If that was the case, anyone could pick them. Part of the fun has to be to pick a show that is not as widely acclaimed/circulated, that you think rocks, & turn people on to it. Hey, give THIS a listen.

In my view, then 12/4 stuff is not appreciably better. Or worse. Same ballpark.

FWIW, 12/3 got 3 votes for Fav show of '79 in DB50. Which put it in a tie for 22nd-30th. They did 75 shows that year. Second quartile show. Now, perhaps it rated lower if it is not as widely distributed as others. Or perhaps other nights would be ahead of it. YMMV.

I don't think you will be disappointed with Searching For The Spark. Its actually got two books-one a very well produced hard back. If you order from the planetgong website-you also get a poster signed by Steve and Miquette.
There is the little matter of postage, of course, buying off them.
I have also ordered the Gong box set off planetgong, which includes a massive poster of the picture on the back of "You", also seen to the left of this post. This may have been a bit rash-it cost £20.00 in postage, and I am not sure what I will do with the massive poster. Still.
Yes, those three Flying Teapot albums are the ones. But I would also include "Camembert Electrique" as being indispensable too. And their contribution to the live Glastonbury Fayre album from 1971 has to be one of the maddest recordings ever made. It is, or was, available as a stand alone release a while back.

It's gotta be from the 1980s, RIGHT?!?!?!? The box set covers 1991 very well, there's NO way he would do a DP pick from 1992-1995....he's done ALL THREE DAVE PICKS THIS YEAR from the 1970s, my guess is 1985, followed by maybe a 1984, or 1982.....I believe at one point a Dave Pick cover for 7/13/84 flashed on the screen briefly a few years ago - anybody remember that???

My prediction/show I would not be disappointed to see picked is...
Blossom Music Center, 6/25/85

The Day Tripper opener, while pretty rough, is interesting, The rest of the show is pretty spot on. I do not recall any egregious missed lyrics or sonic stumbles. West LA is good, Jack Straw is very strong, Row Jimmy is beautiful, and the China>Rider is top notch, one of my favorites.

It would not fill up three whole discs, but we all know there are a lot of excellent songs to pull from other shows on this same tour...Shakedown from 6/30, Scarlet>Fire from 7/1, Morning Dew from 6/28.

That said my guess is Lexington, KY 4/21/78, Baltimore 5/26/77 or Atlanta 5/18/77

I’m half expecting either the Atlanta or Baltimore show to become Dave’s Picks 33, although maybe a starting the third successive year with a ‘77 show is a bit predictable. 1977 has to be one of the most universally popular years and they do like to promote the subscription with something popular, or much requested, to draw people in.

I’ve not picked up on any clues or anything but after a Dec ‘79 pick, which Dave said was “really an 80’s show” and an 80’s/90’s box, I’m hoping 32 won’t be another 80’s show, although I do appreciate some others may feel differently.

The 80’s are covered for 2019 releases - DaP31, Warfield 80 acoustic, GS Box.
No need for anymore this year.

I’m on board with what was mentioned before, DaP32 being a Keith/Bill show.
Fall 72.

Yes, the rest of Spring 77 does need to come out so that there is a complete tour released.

Winterland March/Dec 77 would each make nice Boxes to complement June.

...Daves pick #32 and the upcoming boxset after the Giants Box Set... I wish I could post all the years not yet included in the Daves Pick series, I’m unable to do this task because of my disability, I’m sorry. Can anyone post the list for everyone to see , I would be very grateful for any help my brothers and sisters. I hope everyone is having a grateful weekend this week in August , ‘August’is a month that holds /carries a lot of ‘weight’ in the Grateful Dead’s existence. paves Picks 32 lands in November if I remember correctly ...
I love everyone’s picks and indivisual choices for Daves next pick. I’ll gladly be happy with anyone mentioned , so far!
I don’t consider the 1979 Pick as an 80’s release or pick in the series. I consider 79 a year of its own much like 1977 vs 1978 or even 76 for that matter. Each year carries its own weight to me, which I love. I love playing a show from 77 and then following it with a show from 78 to experience that evolution and growth in the playing and unity from each band member at that given time in history . Mores 80’s Please for pick 32, or another year not yet explored in the Daves Pick series. I want something Brand New, something I never heard before , ever. I’ll be grateful for any year, I love it al , ha ha lol ;) 🙏❤️💀🤠, but more Pig pen please to go along with the unresleased music included in the next boxset that includes a LP with new unrealed performances from the early 60’s before 1968... ❤️ Any else pre order a box set before they are sold out! Very limited release, a very smal Run, numbered boxset.

Which list are you referring to LMG? I have most of the original list that was published when DaP was first launched, is that the one you mean or is there a more recent list?

From that original list, I noted the first 40 shows, but I’m sure there were more than that. If those 40 are anything to go by, they’ve departed from the script quite a lot, but of course they didn’t have the Bettyboards back then. Of those 40, they’ve only released 14; 5 as Picks, 2 in the Pacific Northwest Box and 7 in 30 Trips. I’m sure we’ll see more in time, but as they’ve released 80+ shows since the list was published and only 14 from the list, I’m not sure how helpful it actually is.

So I have recieved the latest Dave's Picks but after collecting it at a local tobacco shop in Växjö, a couple of days later I recieved an invoice in the mail från UPS with an extra about $100,00 to pay for shipping. That invoice should have been paid on August 22nd but I totally refuse to pay it. I'd rather send the Dave's Picks volume back ...

So now I'm waiting for a reminder from UPS and then it will be turned over to a collector of debts and if not paid then, it will be handed over to court. So what can I do?
I have recieved a mail from Dr Rhino in late July concerning problems with Customer Services. I have answered that mail but haven't recieved a reply since then. What else can I do? Anyone knows?

Micke Östlund,
Växjö, Sweden

Micke-I am no expert on Swedish law, but if they didn't charge you at the point of collection, and you didn't receive the invoice until after you had picked it up, I wouldn't have thought they could try and prosecute you after the event. You could surely legitimately claim that you didn't know there was a charge when you picked it up, and wouldn't have done so had you realised there was one.
But, as say, I am no expert. Good luck, anyway.

Based on what I’ve read here, I believe Rhino has now paid for all shipping costs. You just need to get UPS to realize this. People in other Euro countries found that contacting UPS billing department provided the best results. Get details about 30 messages below. Also send a PM to MaryE. Once successful, UPS will no longer consider the bill as unpaid.

Sorry for the hassle and the long wait for getting the CDs. Time passes especially slowly when you are waiting for something good in the mail!

I had moved from one address to another, put in a request (or two, or three) for a change of address within the same city. July 26 came and went and no DaP31 or no other mail, well, only a piece or two. I put in a request or two or three at my local United States Postal Service office and they're not much help. I recently put in a request for help to search for lost mail from the US Postal Inspector General's office and my Representative in Congress, Rep. Susan Wild (D, Pa 7th) office. Hopefully, they will help me.

If only it was that simple. Rhino seem to have attempted to resolve this fiasco on an individual basis. In many cases they seem to have been successful, in other cases not. As far as I can make out, they have attempted to pay UPS for my package but have been unsuccessful. Meanwhile UPS have long since stopped updating their tracking info which currently states that the package is still at my local UPS Access Point despite the contrary message that it will only be there until 19 August. €81.88 freight charge still stands. UPS are fully aware of the situation and who the sender is. They told me (twice) to ask the sender to contact their local UPS office. I passed this information on to Rhino (twice) but seemingly to no avail.

Micke: Isn't a Dave's Picks worth a couple of years in the slammer? But seriously, I also received an invoice from UPS with an early date but in my case the invoice arrived before they tried to deliver the package. Also the delivery man wanted payment before giving me the package. The local UPS Access Point also wanted payment after UPS had told me (incorrectly) that I didn't have to pay.

Boy, if it keeps going like this they may have to switch to entirely digital! These delivery problems have to be biting in mightily to their profit....

Anyway, it might be more realistic to have something like DeKalb '77 for the first DaP of the new year and a four disc set like Kezar '73 for bonus disc pick to entice subscribers. At this point, there are still so many great options!

Micke, ring the telephone number on the invoice, UPS billing in Sweden, explain and ask for the invoice to be reverted to Rhino. (Even though Kundtjänst worked for me, its a bit hit and miss depending on who you speak to). After two or three weeks you will get a credit note which confirms that you are no longer responsible for the 1030 sek.

Also, I forgot to add, according to UPS, the resonsibility for delivery charges ALWAYS ultimately resides with the sender, so once the invoice is reverted it is no longer your responsibilty.
Of course this has nothing to do with legitimate customs and import duties. Which in this particular case were not levied. I have requested a replacement from Rhino because my Daves was badly chewed up after all the toing and froing, I suspect I will then be subject to duties. Since the replacement will come with DHL, these charges will be paid by DHL and I will be invoiced subsequently.
Cheers

Well.. There are at least 15 top shelf shows yet to see the light.. perhaps 30. So if there are 15 years left in this odyssey.. that gives us an A++, a solid A+, add in a few for variety, obscurity or simply to side-step rioting and there you have it.. another decade and a half of solid releases. Perhaps more.

That seems to be their model.

UPS have updated their tracking information. Now it shows that my package has been returned from the local UPS Access Point to the area depot and is subsequently in transit. Where it is in transit to is not revealed, which is not helpful, but I guess it is on its way back to the US of A or to the local incinerator. Helpfully, the tracking site also states: "The receiver does not want the product and refused the delivery. We'll contact the sender or receiver about this delivery." To say that I do not want the product is somewhat inaccurate to put it mildly and that they will now apparently contact the sender (or receiver?) is something they should have done long ago when alerted to the situation. I am curious to know what will happen next. Exciting stuff - if you like this sort of thing.

I agree that there are roughly 30-40 A+ shows left. That gives us at least 10 years left of intrigue. I really like the idea of 34 being 6-10-73! Set III w/ABB as the bonus disc. That would sell a few more 2020 subscriptions, i reckon.

Anyone else a fan of this release ?! 🙏❤️🤠

Rare cuts and oddities.... early beat sonic journals, primo stuff on this release, I believe Dave put together the final track listing. Bear had a couple / some of his own track running order in his mind for this release. I would love to see Daves and beard notes on this release before production began, it’s always interesting to me how a team comes together to creat together to give birth a new release for the masses , this I think was for the long time ran base, I forgot the number produced unit wise lp vs Cd ?! , Still I love it for its raw power and sound! Primo studio and live performances and rehearsals as well are used and More PigPen! lOVe !!! 🙏❤️🤠💀🙏❤️.

I never managed to resolve the payment issue with UPS billing - guess it depends on which office person you get put through to. My parcel status stopped updating weeks ago but I have been told it will be destroyed as it had been abandoned by the sender. E-mailed Dr. Rhino on 23rd as per his earlier replies. Finally got a response today which states they are still waiting on replacement copies but he will send one when they arrive - no timeframe provided. There seems to be no end to this fiasco.

The new distributor screws up every order I have placed this year. The excuse since March that I have been told is they are changing warehouses. It takes 5 months to move 50 items and a few thousand units to a new warehouse??? I placed an order for mugs on 8/1 and I have yet to get a shipment notice. Customer Service gives me a canned response and hasn't resolved anything. DP Vol 30 didn't even ship until four weeks after release date. So sad. I am considering never ordering again and just having my friends share the ALAC's with me. This is absurd!!!

Saw them at Merlefest back in 2001. Half the band was arriving by car as they started, apparently having driven from I think Buffalo. So not the best circumstances. A good show. The buddy I was with continued seeing them every time they came around. I saw them at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem once or twice and another festival at some point. They were always good, but nothing too mind blowing. The zydeco aspect is pretty cool, and I like the sound, just never got too into them.

Last 5: 8/4/76 The Other One as I type, will dig into the whole show next
3/18/71 continuing 30 Trips dive, weird hearing organ on Wharf Rat, but the Caution is an all timer. Pigpen is fantastic on it. Not long, but very tight and not crazy rambling Pig. Very good show.
2/22/69 Wow. Love the setlist switcharoo over the Fillmore West run the next week, Doin' That Rag> St Stephen> The Eleven> Lovelight is every bit as good as if Dark Star had kicked off the sequence. Jerry must have hated Rag> Stephen for its overly hard tempo changes in back to back songs. Then a 16 min Eleven?!
Paul Simon Collection pure musical genius.
Quadrophenia even more pure musical genius.

Catfish-John, stuck in a similar limbo about the Woodstock box, got an email saying it was on the way, then one from UPS saying they were returning it because of the wrong invoice, then a canned email from dead.net saying don't bother contacting us again, we will send you a dispatch email when we get round to it.
I'm really shocked by the attitude, not just because this is a really expensive vv limited box, but just the general principle of customer service on top of everything else recently.

3 weeks and counting...still no new delivery notification.
Is there anyone at dead.net or rhino who is in any way motivated to help sort this?

Anyone else had a post-delivery invoice from UPS? I had two pre-delivery requests from UPS for my two copies and thought I’d paid but they never took my money - I thought Dr Rhino had sorted out instead. Now I’ve got the first of what I’m sure is two invoices. Yikes!

Frank, I’ve also received a UPS invoice for £84 this morning. This is what UPS were previously asking me to pay in order to release my double subscription, before I spoke to UPS billing and asked them to bill the sender (i.e Rhino).

This is a complete and utter pile of garbage on the part of Rhino and it will surely cost them an absolute fortune to sort it all out. Unless anyone has any better suggestions, my approach to this will be two fold;

(I) Reply to Rhino on the email chain that already exists for this, tell them what’s happened and ask them to pay it.

(II) Contact UPS and tell them Rhino said they were going to pick up these charges, which is what I told them in order to get them to release the shipment.

The irony of this is, that this entire fiasco has led to my not really wanting to listen to DP31 anyway now, simply too much of a negative association.

Rhino should have fixed the international shipping problems immediately rather than use the ‘tough shit, it’s your problem, we already sent you a disingenuous generic email’ approach that they have been using.

It’s disgraceful that Dead net allows Rhino to treat Deadheads (who are paying customers) this way.

Has anyone figured out what actually happened here? What it just an incorrect box that was ticked as to shipping, i.e. expedited vs. standard? It's hard to fathom why shipping costs should be so exorbitant for an item like this. It needs to be determined so something like this will never happen again.

Huge huge fan! My wife and I have been going to their shows for the last 25 years or so. Great vibe with a lot of socially conscious lyrics. We see them many times a year and just dance the night away! Luckily they found a second home here in North Carolina and play down here a lot!

Wilfred, a few weeks ago someone on this site spelled out exactly what the problem was, I believe after lengthy communication with both UPS and Rhino. I can’t recall exactly what it was, but believe it was something along the lines of someone at Rhino selecting the wrong shipping option as you suggest.

...hello everyone, I hope all of you are having a grateful day.
A fellow dead head friend of mine since grade school came by for a visit and a lovely lunch. We attended many dead shows together going back to 190. And always had a gas blast. Never a dull moment with my friend, his nick name is bear ha ha because he’s gigantic. He’s also a primo jazz drummer ss well, went to school and everything . Very groovy cat. He brought me a gift. It’s the1971 yellow boxset. Does anyone have and thoughts about this release? I wonder what the doc would say ;)
He paid 28$ , which I thought wasn’t so bad . I haven’t opened it yet... reviews or any opinions about this yellow box at the word 1971 performances broadcast over the radio .... how’s the sound quality from these recordings?, any good? I’ve never heard any of them before. I’m a big fan of 1971 Dead music! The doc turned me on to some beautiful gems from 1971, with great audio too! A grateful soul the doc has , god bless him ! And all of you as well. Rock on my brothers and sisters and smile smile smile 🙏❤️🤠

Update - The mug arrived yesterday broken and Warner/Rhino only responded they cancelled my open orders but didn't give a refund. I am not paying $178 for Giants box set to arrive broken. I am so tired of this! I can't believe I will never order another item from this site. I have been a Dave's Picks subscriber since year 1. No more. I will just get the ALAC's from friends. I have shelled out so much money to this site and the lack of customer service is absurd!
