    By 1987, the Grateful Dead had lived many of their nine lives but were about to embark on one not a soul had seen coming. In The Dark, their first studio album in seven years, had spawned a hit (A TOP 10 SINGLE FOR THE GRATEFUL DEAD?!) and "Touch Of Grey" begat a new generation with their fanny packs and their MTV and their undeniable quest to join the party already in progress. And boy, did the Dead let them in! But not without fine-tuning their sonic vibes to meet the new demand.

    "The Swamp," as Giants Stadium was affectionately known, along with the grandstands the Dead had been frequenting, would seemingly equate with BIGGER and LOUDER, but the band "remained determined to give equal weight to the more subtle, oblique elements; to the exploratory improvisation and rhythmic complexities; to the fine details of the most heart-rending ballads as well as the weirdest dissonances in the jams."

    With GIANTS STADIUM 1987/1989/1991, we retrace this journey from their 1987 breakthrough to their 1989 revelation ("the closest they ever came to sounding like a really polished stadium-level rock act, but the band’s penchant for breaking out of the constraints of song structure and into freewheeling improvisation will remind you just who you’re listening to here") to their transformative return in 1991, aided by elegance of Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby.

    GIANTS STADIUM: 1987, 1989, 1991 features five previously unreleased shows that were recorded at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on: July 12, 1987; July 9 and 10, 1989; and June 16 and 17, 1991. Originally recorded by John Cutler, each show has been mixed from the multitrack master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir's TRI Studios in San Rafael, CA, and mastered in HDCD by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. The first three shows are mixed from 24-track masters. The final two from 1991 are the only Grateful Dead shows ever recorded to 48-track masters. We’re rounding things out with a little visual stimuli -  the entire multi-camera 6/17/91 concert recording on either two DVDs or a single Blu-ray, both with a surround mix by Norman.

    30th anniversary

    happy 30th anniversary to one of my favorite runs - 10/18-10/20 1989 at the (you guessed it) Spectrum!

    I used to think we'd never see these shows released, but I truly think there are only a handful of years the dead can really blow out releases from individual years (69, 72, 73, 74, 77, 89, 90) so I'm still holding out hope!

    I would love to see them re-release some of the bonus discs. I have them all, but some (many) are as good or better than the source release. I'd love to see more that missed them way back get them.

    I guess with respect to bonus discs they should call themselves Really Gone in stead of Real Gone.

    Speaking of fall 71, does anyone know what’s up with the Real Gone/Discogs rerelease?
    They were spitting them out pretty regularly backwards through3.4. 3.3 was released but took a while. 3.2 should of come out by now? I have copies but would like to get the “real” ones to fill in the collection....

    I always liked the flow and groove in Iko better, the jams seemed more fluid as well. Women are Smarter was another one of those songs that seemed to come in the rotation just a touch too much when I was seeing shows.

    Just my opinion.

    As for Rush, one of the first concerts I saw somewhere between 80 and 82?? It was at the Capital Centre.. Looking over the setlists, my guess is 81 because they played a good bit of 2112. I saw them before the GD.. just once. Every time they came around I tried to see them and failed for a host in hindsight poor and invalid of reasons. Well, at least I got to see them once.

    As for the subject matter for Women are Smarter.. yin and yang, without the counter balance of one the other can wreak much havoc.

    Got it for Christmas 1982. I was 10. Only knew Tom Sawyer from the year before, and Subdivisions was on the radio a lot. I used to pop on side 1 and listen to Subdivisions and The Analog Kid, then put on Who Are You. By '86 I was all caught up and saw them on the Power Windows Tour (first of many). Signals is one of my favs. Just saw a great bootkeg vid from Montreal night 2 of the Signals tour on youtube. I say great in that it is okay sound with Neil high in the mix and far away grainy video from directly across the stage second level. So you can't make out their faces or anything but it's great because the sound is good enough and it's nostalgic. And you can see Neil work the acoustic drums for the last time before he started to integrate electronic drums into his kit. They to seven out of eight tracks from signals and stuff like the camera eye and Xanadu. And it's just incredible watching Neil work. Not for everyone, but definitely worth checking out a few songs if you're a rush fan. The setlist is un freakin real

    I would also like to see them release 7/25/74 soon, and 6/23/74, so we can have all of the '74 Dark Stars (we have a partial of 6/23 on So Many Roads). But after listening to 6/30/74 last night on soundboard, I say go for it.

    Daverock, I listen to that show couple times. Pretty cool listen to Keith play the organ. His first dark stars on Dave's Picks 3. Agree all the way, it's a great time for the band, and a nice show to check out.

    I listened to 10/19/71 again yesterday-it never fails to impress. The first show that Keith played and no less than 6 new songs. The country rock songs rattle along at a fair old pace, and the Other One is the show case jam-unique with Keith on organ. Its not perfect, some of it seems a bit rushed, but there is a real sense that the band has started a new beginning, and knows it.
    Great period, Fall 1971, with many top shows-some of which have been Dave's Picks of course. But not necessarily the best shows.

    Jockamo (Iko Iko)

    Jockamo was originally written by James "Sugarboy" Crawford in 1953, and the Dixie Cups recorded a song called Iko Iko in 1965 that stole the rhythm and most of the lyrics straight from Jockamo. In 1967, Crawford settled a lawsuit which gave him a cut of royalties on performances, but lost any claim to authorship. Even worse, the Dixie Cups sued somebody 30 years later for claiming authorship, and they established sole authorship, even though they had ripped it off. Man Smart uses a similar rhythm, which Iko/Jockamo is a Cajun beat, and Man Smart uses a Calypso beat, which are very similar and the Bo Diddley beat is pretty close to it as well. Man Smart was written in the 1930s, but became popular in 1956 when Harry Belafonte did it, three years after after Crawford wrote and recorded Jockamo. And the Bo Diddley beat is from 1955, which Buddy Holly stole in 1957 for Not Fade Away (though Norman Petty, Holly's producer stole a writing credit on the song by simply putting his name on it).

    Stranger and Shakedown are quite different to me. Feel Like a Stranger is very similar to Fly Like an Eagle though, except for the move to C#m on the second part of the riff.

I am also listening to early 1969 - 3/1/69 and 3/2/69-pure gold.

I agree that the mighty SG was something to hear, and that there are many amazing players, as you say. My favourite from the late 60s is John Cipollina - the tone he got on the first album and Happy Trails is wondrous to behold. In the 70's Tony Iommi with Black Sabbath marmalized England with one, closely followed by Man, The Groundhogs, Uriah Heep and many more. No wonder my hearing isn't what it was! Neck like a telegraph pole. The SG, not me.

I know what you mean about the thought that those that attended these shows are dying off, I can have the same one.

But isn't the real test of the greatness of the band is how long after the music will be remembered. I like to think getting these limited recordings will someday come back as VERY desirable things to have, like owning old original blues recordings. Something in 50 years someone will hold and be transported by the sound. If they're anything like every other collected thing, half or more will be lost to the ravages of time. Maybe the reason I buy all the vinyl shit (will certainly be rarer than the cd's), is to have a piece of that history. Only our grandchildren will know if the sound lives down the road.

I ordered the 192/24 FLAC download version on 1 August 2019 and received an email this morning to download it. The link is only for the 9 July 1989 show and it's at the wrong sample rate (44,100). I haven't checked the bit depth yet but that's probably screwed up as well. I had similar issues with the RFK download too but at least I received the whole product. Anyone else experience this as well?

Or at least hooked me. I was born in the '80s and never got to see the Dead. I picked up a copy of Live/Dead in the late '90s and absolutely loved it. I listened over and over, but was never really hooked. Until I heard my first show from '72. Since then, I've consumed all the Dead I can find.

'72 did for me what D&C is doing for others. And I suspect I won't be the only one.

Received #585 of 10000 today in Baltimore. I ordered two of them. One came today, the other is coming Monday. I guess they’re getting their act together. Very nice job on the box design and packaging.

I also ordered the digital download. That is a problem so far. The download only contained one 1989 show. At least customer service already knew about the problem when I called.

I think rock and the Dead will live on. While my kids are no strangers to Taylor Swift and current trendy music, they don't listen to it around the house. One daughter (13 yrs) goes to sleep to either Yes or the Beatles, and the other (9 yrs) to Phil era Genesis or The Who.

The Grateful Dead, in my mind, is a different beast that will live on with a different appeal: varied setlists, improvizational performances of the same songs, regular influx of cover tunes and originals, and the BIG chance (if chance it was) - they recorded it all. That floors me. With the exception of that period when Bear was in jail in the 2nd half of '70, they just always had the wherewithal to make sure someone was hitting that record button. And it wasn't because they knew it would amount to a revenue stream one day, I've read that much. Others here I'm sure are more knowledgeable, but I've read that they used the tapes periodically for self evaluation of their performances (or to give to new keyboard players so they could get up to speed on the songs; but my boy Keith said screw that, just sit me down for a couple rehearsals, as he shoved them under the bed of his parents' houseboat - enjoy your Dick's Picks 35). But while that practicality was in play, I think there was a bit of providence in motion too. Something gently gnawed at these guys, I think, to preseve as much of it all as they could, and not for monetary reasons.

Or maybe they were a bunch of packrats. I was cleaning out my garage the other day and found a half dozen cassette tape players, including the yellow Sony Sports Walkman with reverse play functionality, so you didn't have to flip the tape. Mine always sounded better going forward. And all of those Maxell XLII-Ses. I was such an audiophile I refused to record over them when I wanted to get a new LP down on tape (on the first play of course, and only after using some D4 Discwasher on the vinyl). Had to be a brand new tape. And God help anyone who slammed a door during the process.

I was pretty excited for this set since being from NJ I saw a couple of these Giants Stadium shows. Playing the 87 show now (first time ever a release showed up on release date for me) and it sounds great- order a copy before its gone. It was a great scene at the huge shows with all the thousand of heads there! Dead were the last band I saw at Giants stadium. Now its Metlife and the Stones were incredible there on recent tour. Great package and good to have a set of dead from my younger years. My first show was 85 so these bring back some nostalgic memories from back then. And the black sneaks in the pics, haha, I had them. Took my wife a couple of years to get me to switch back to white sneaks. still wearing Vans to this day though.

Jerry...man, what can I say? How about another YOWZA!

Kind of a short first set, but high quality performances throughout.

Those of you who refuse to listen to shows post 1978 or so....sadly, you're missing out on some epic stuff here. Just sayin'.

These multi-tracks sound amazing. Tip o' the cap to Messrs. Glasser and Norman (and Cutler for recording 'em in the first place). And Lemieux, of course! And Pinkus and the Rhino team, et al.

... and it's AWESOME! Obviously, I've yet to listen to it all - only disc one of 87, but the sound is incredible! Their sound in the late 80s-90s was so different than the 70s, even the early 80s. This band took every advantage of the advancement of sound tech, from their beginning, so it's no wonder that their twilight years sound so lush and layered. Many will argue that *this* sound is why they prefer the younger, leaner Dead, but I was sold on this box by the time Jer rips his first solo on Hell ina Bucket. Also, the set itself is gorgeous! Very happy #5thousand something landed in Baltimore, (saw another Bmore boy got it today too!) Looking forward to digging in deep this weekend! Hope all that ordered it get it soon, and those that didn't, i'd say pull the trigger if yer able.

So I'm ripping this beast in and looking thru the book. Once again, a shitload of pictures in this box and I'm NOT in one! How can that be? I know I recognized several people, that I'm 100% sure I was standing next to. That girl with the hula hoop,,, I'm sure she hit me several times with the damn thing. I can only assume I left for a few to get a cold one. My bad luck :-(

Spinning 87 CD1 and the sound is grate.
I like the ‘Take A Step Back’ Jam, they could have gone somewhere fun with that.

Hi All, so I got my shipping notice for my Giants Box a few days ago and just like many you, no tracking number. I was beginning to have a slight meltdown but I regained my senses and checked out the comments. I was relieved to see that I was not alone in this. Then today I tried to use my UPS My Choice to track it to which I encountered an issue. Fearing some type of delay and being at work, I took a walk and a chance. I get all of my packages delivered to work so I went to the mailroom and it was sitting there waiting for me.

Needless to say I began rip it to my computer and I gave it a sample listen. From what I heard it sounds great and each show has some great energy. Of course I haven't listened to all of it thoroughly. I think tonight I will go visual and watch the blue rey of 6/17/91.

I could have sworn I ordered the June 17th 1991 show a few weeks ago, but it's not showing up in my orders list now. I'm going to have to go see if it was charged to my card or not. Now I'm disappointed it's not here well everyone else is getting theirs.

I believe 250 sold today. I finally pulled the trigger myself today after seeing they were moving fast. Finished Daves 31 on the way to work today after listening to all 31 Daves' over the past two months or so. 31 is a great show. Love Brent and always have. "Go to Heaven" was my first Dead album gifted from my big brother. Listened to it over and over and it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. Althea hooked me young. A few years later the tapestries and tape trading and shows would begin after going away to school. But anyway, damn near all the Daves Picks are phenomenal and consistently excellent shows. Great job and thanks to all involved! (Maybe one near miss for me but no complaints) (Just don't tell razor-totin' Jim.) Anyway, on the way home from work, had nothing to listen to so of course I put on Grateful Dead radio. And behold, it was Dave playing tunes from each show in the box and they sounded fine. I was already in--but today was the day! Glad to be one of the 250 or so and looking forward to the next 31!

Perhaps the only multi-track tapes of the Hornsby/Vince lineup? These sound spectacular! This should’ve come out as a follow up to Without a Net!

I've got worse copies of the '87 show(w/ Dylan) and of 7-10-89 so I started with 7-9-89 for one of these I hadn't heard yet. Wow.
Only through the first set and it's inspired and well played. Again, the sound is A-f'n-plus.

On a weird note...it also reminded me for the first time in a long while about Adam Katz. RIP. The swamp was not a kind place all the time. Why the boys played there after that shit I could never figure out.

My friend and I were at the show when adam died and we found out 2 days later in the Boston Globe. There were so many people going over that bridge back and forth we thought it was going to fall. The next show that followed had these notices all around the parking lots and telephone poles asking if anyone had been near the bridge and saw anything. Things were kind of not the same afterwards. Sad. P.S. vguy it's weird that you mentioned his face. I always remembered his face, even over 30 or more years have passed.

I even went back and found the post here where I mentioned ordering it, but my credit card has no record of it either. I use Vguy-grade supplies, so that might have something to do with it. Just ordered it now, but it says it doesn't ship until 10/2. Well that sucks. Let me know how the Dark Star is.

I can't express my disappointment enough when I say that I opted for the 24 bit downloads of the Giants Stadium box set and paid for them the day the shows were released. When the big day arrived and I opened my email with a link to the shows, it only contained a link to one show (6/17/91) and at 16 bit quality.

To top things off, when I emailed customer service on Friday night, I saw that they are not open again until Monday morning and I got a return email saying that it will could take as much as two business days before they will get back to me. Really??? There has to be a better way -- oh yeah that would be LivePhish.com and Nugs.net.

A friend bought the DD and was lucky enough to get the whole box albeit in 16 bit FLAC.

So, at some point, Deadnet will "fix" this and make it right. After giving away 16 bit FLAC downloads all weekend.

This botched customer service thing needs to stop. Someone mentioned it's probably a bunch of old Deadheads getting confused and bumbling around. I doubt it. A chill went down my spine when I saw that this was being released early. You guys aren't ever prepared when product is released on schedule. Like every day is your first day at work.

It's not cute of funny anymore. It's aggravating and rude. For years people have paid for your frankly overpriced product and every year when there is a big release, you manage to screw it up big time. Then go home for the weekend while paying customers hold their asses. If I treated my business this way, I would have no business. Know where my E72 box was shipped to? Africa. I don't live in Africa. I live in Vermont.

I would have Bandcamp.com handle this stuff for you. Not Nugs.net. They are screwing it up too. I have never had one single incident of download or merch problems with them. Not one in ten years. And they far overshadow Nugs as far as available product.

Why not try to have your act together for a change and surprise us all?

As I wait to find out when my copy ships, hopefully next week once the weekend has been enjoyed, I’m contemplating a sweepstake as to when it will arrive. Will it be before the Gong boxset due at the end of September or the new Dylan Bootleg Series #15 due on 1st November. i’m Guessing it should be in the days between.

....I did not order it, but if I had, I would also be pretty pissed off. It's inexcusable really. How hard can it be? Optimism is becoming a fleeting trait among dead.net/Rhino customers, and that's sad.
Vguy-grade supplies. Lol. Exactly right. My dispensary never lets me down. I think I finally found a strain that is TOO potent. Never thought I would ever say that....

Stumbled on to a band called Dire Wolves while browsing amazon recently, an album titled Grow Towards the Light. Picked it up 'cause it piqued my curiosity. Spun it a couple of times now and it is some cool trippy stuff. Voices, but no words, trippy instrumental grooves...hits the spot for me.

Seems like there are a lot of pre-order people who are in the drifting boat of despair with me. I ordered mine on the very first day. The only thing that I can think of is that when it was originally available to order it had a release date of 9/27. That is the date that is on my confirmation order. I don't know when they updated it but the release date at some point later became 9/20. Maybe they only shipped this week to the people who ordered after the release date became 9/20 and those of us who ordered really early will be shipping next week so they will arrive by 9/27. If that theory is correct then if I had ordered 14 days ago I would have received the box yesterday. Or it would be on the way at least. But since I ordered 51 days ago it hasn't even shipped.

These first world problems we must sometimes endure are truly annoying.

Skeebe, I ordered on 8/01 as you did, probably within a half hour of when orders started to be taken. There was no shipping notice for me until 6:50 a.m. ET today, and I see that my package is at the nearest UPS facility less than 15 miles from my post office, its ultimate destination. Delivery is scheduled for Monday, 9/23, even though the parcel reached New Jersey at 2:29 a.m. I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to the shipping schedules, the important thing is that these long-awaited box sets do reach us, hopefully sooner than later!

It seems random. I placed my order before the change in release date and I got a shipping notice pretty late on 9/17 (I think) with an estimated arrival of 9/23. I went with the standard shipping option. In any case, I feel like if it arrives before 9/27 it will be early since I purchased it thinking that 9/27 was the release date.

I also seem to recall that there was a message on the email with the shipping notice that said that they were trying to get them out fast and not to stress if you didn't get a tracking number as it might not be active till a bit after the item was shipped or later.
