    By 1987, the Grateful Dead had lived many of their nine lives but were about to embark on one not a soul had seen coming. In The Dark, their first studio album in seven years, had spawned a hit (A TOP 10 SINGLE FOR THE GRATEFUL DEAD?!) and "Touch Of Grey" begat a new generation with their fanny packs and their MTV and their undeniable quest to join the party already in progress. And boy, did the Dead let them in! But not without fine-tuning their sonic vibes to meet the new demand.

    "The Swamp," as Giants Stadium was affectionately known, along with the grandstands the Dead had been frequenting, would seemingly equate with BIGGER and LOUDER, but the band "remained determined to give equal weight to the more subtle, oblique elements; to the exploratory improvisation and rhythmic complexities; to the fine details of the most heart-rending ballads as well as the weirdest dissonances in the jams."

    With GIANTS STADIUM 1987/1989/1991, we retrace this journey from their 1987 breakthrough to their 1989 revelation ("the closest they ever came to sounding like a really polished stadium-level rock act, but the band’s penchant for breaking out of the constraints of song structure and into freewheeling improvisation will remind you just who you’re listening to here") to their transformative return in 1991, aided by elegance of Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby.

    GIANTS STADIUM: 1987, 1989, 1991 features five previously unreleased shows that were recorded at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on: July 12, 1987; July 9 and 10, 1989; and June 16 and 17, 1991. Originally recorded by John Cutler, each show has been mixed from the multitrack master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir's TRI Studios in San Rafael, CA, and mastered in HDCD by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. The first three shows are mixed from 24-track masters. The final two from 1991 are the only Grateful Dead shows ever recorded to 48-track masters. We’re rounding things out with a little visual stimuli -  the entire multi-camera 6/17/91 concert recording on either two DVDs or a single Blu-ray, both with a surround mix by Norman.

    Trips Around The Sun

    My favourite show is the one from 1967. I have only played the 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 and 1990 shows this year, and I have enjoyed all of them all. After 1967, I would say 1968 and 1969 are the next two favourites. Maybe 1970, too- brilliant Other One there. I am sure the 1972, 1973 and 1974 ones are exemplary, too, but I cannot honestly recollect what they are like at this moment in time.

    Its also nice digging in the corners, as Jim suggests, and finding a shining star where you least expect it.

    Is going to look great on the shelf, feel great in the hands, and sound AMAZING. I am Grateful.

    LOVE the 1967 from TTATS--best show ever? The '68 is fantastic. And then I am grateful for all the later shows in that box, particularly '82-'84 and '93-'95. The 1969-1978 shows are good, but we have so much from those years that my ears are thankful for the opportunity to hear sweet shows from the years we haven't heard much from.

    If I were a robot, couldn't I easily work around a basic CAPTCHA?

    My favorites mirror some of those already mentioned.. especially 67, 70, 69 and (surprise) 74. 75 is very interesting also.

    ..but for me it's those shows that are off the beaten path that I sort of get the most mileage from.. 84 and 87 for example might just be the best shows played in their respective years and are super high energy. I could use a few less patches, but I enjoy the box very much.

    As mentioned on the Dave's Picks 31 thread, it looks like Dead.net got hacked and had to pay £73.92 in ransomware COD to some UPS guy with a Russian accent. Strange days..

    Oh, can't leave off 68, 76, 77, 78, 71, 72, 73.. Riverbend 85 is fun. 86 has a really sweet Comes a Time out of TOO. 91 with Branford.. 67 and 70 are my favorites though, if I had to pick.

    Hard for me to narrow to just 3 because they are all nice shows.

    I pretty much listen to everything I have from the Dead at least once per year on or near anniversary dates (for the most part), but here's 3 I like...

    9/10/91 MSG
    10/26/89 Miami Arena
    9/18/74 Dijon

    ...but I also like these 3...

    2/22/69 Dream Bowl
    10/20/68 Greek
    10/27/79 Cape Cod

    ...and of course EVERYTHING else.

    I couldn't see myself discounting any show from this set. All have plenty to like for me.

    As someone who came onboard during the 3rd decade of the band's existence, my initial preferences were the Pigpen and Brent era's. As I've dug deeper, mainly thanks to these releases, I like it all. Every era.

    Of the 50 shows I saw with Jerry, a few in '95 were kind of rough, especially the last two at Soldier Field. If released I'd still want them. Even the US Blues that Jerry pretty much gave up on at the second to last show.

    At the time of going to shows, the only other time (besides a few in '95) I felt the show was subpar was 3/13/93. The follow-up to Rosemont which I would agree was a nice run. Upon further listening many years later I find that even this show was really good. Terrapin through the end was top notch, including one of the GREAT Stella Blue's.

    My main hangup has always been lack of variety in official releases, and now that is no longer an issue. Love it all but my sweet spot is 65-95 with emphasis on '87-'91.

    Budgetary constraints has limited my ability to be a completionist, and I'm quite a few behind, but at least try to keep up as best as possible as new things come out. Missed out on much of the Record Store Day releases.

    Shows - location, years, era.

    I got in the bus in mid 1992, and from then until 1995 I only had the exposure to the music from the few shows I attended, and the few live releases that were out, one and Two from the Vault, Bears Choice, Without a Net, Dick's Picks 1. I was also able to acquire some tapes. Basically I was taking it all in, loving all of it of course. Yet I do recall at my first show, when Bobby sang Lovelight i was little thrown off - yes I was used to hearing Pigpen on that tune. The result was that I just didn't have a good knowledge of shows or eras and was certainly lacking in the numbers tapes I had listened too.

    So I did my Dead scholarly work after Jerry died, because I was compelled to get as many shows as I could. I sought out getting more tapes and thankfully Dick's Picks kept coming out. Now even then I knew that the shows from "back in the day" were more coveted, or at least that was what more experienced heads told me. I remember a dude from college who only listened to shows from 73-74... he was pretty obsessed with it, but I can see why. So I got every tape I could and listened to them all. Many of my tapes were from 69 -78 as it turned out. I became most familiar that time frame and over time I developed that as a preference. Of course I was exposed to many of the standout out shows: 3/1/69, 4/28/71, 5/8/77, 7/8/78...etc

    However over time and especially in recent years I have been way more open to shows from all eras/years. I still feel like there are a few years that may not appeal to me, but I am open to anything. It doesn't matter where they played as long as the music is good, well I should say good for the time. For example, I will certainly judge show from 85 on its own merits and not compare it to a 77 show.

    At this point I will buy any just about anything TPTB give us. Although I may have expanded my horizons over the years , still I feel the same as I did all those years ago in '95, when I valued every show because everything came to end. I still feel this way and now we have had many shows be given the official release. In terms of volume The Dead/Dave L./Rhino have not quite cuaght up with the tapers/archive.org obviously. Yet I am happy and appreciative of what Dave L and the crew have given us and I feel like they are doing a great job.

    Little desire to hear those shows

    I’ve a similar view to Daverock on this. As a U.K. follower of the Dead I only saw them twice; the last two nights of the 1990 European Tour. Both shows were great, particularly the last night.

    Without A Net had only been out a few weeks and I loved the wider sound palette they were using (midi I guess). There were also two or three incendiary performances on the album, albeit along with a few lacklustre ones, and I decided I really liked this modern Dead sound. Up until the I’d only listened to official releases. I had a few tapes, but I’d never really played them as I didn’t like cassettes.

    One From The Vault came out in 1991. The sound palette was more limited but the performance was uniformly strong and Garcia’s voice sounded great. I stuck with the just official releases which became more plentiful as the years went on, covering most eras of the band. I yearned for more of the sparkling midi sound of WAN. I’ve already mentioned that I loved Terrapin Limited, but couldn’t find anything at all to enthuse about in Dozin’ At The Knick. Subsequent mid to late 80s and 90s shows continued to disappoint whereas I found several of the earlier releases, from the 70s, to exceptional.

    The more I listened to release of all eras, the more it became apparent that, whilst you can find good things to listen to from all eras of the dead, the consistency of performance started to deteriorate in the late 70s and this only accelerated from the early 80s. This view is simply my own, not born out of the era I started listening to the band in or the shows I attended but out of what I hear in the Dead’s numerous official live releases.

    So, whilst I loved the shows I saw in 1990, I’ve no desire to see these released. Having heard so many disappointing releases from the 80s and 90s, why should I believe these shows will stand up to the scrutiny of repeated listening any better than most of the others?

    I am not sure its acceptable to answer your own question, but....
    Of all the 1980s shows, I would be most interested in getting copies of the two I went to-or shows from the two tours they were a part-Europe March and October 1981, than any of the others.
    Similarly, of all the Bruce and Vince shows I would be most interested in getting copies of the three I attended in October/November 1990 than any of the others.

    But...and its a big but....I would prefer to get any unreleased show from the 1974 Europe tour than any of the five I went to. Or any show from 1974 and earlier, come to that. I just prefer the music played during those years.

    I have this attitude for most of the rock/blues/pop.. whatever... music I listen to. I much prefer the era from 1965-1975 than what came after. There are exceptions of course-but I probably listen to more music from those years than any other.

I received my order confirmation email on 8/1 around 12:15 pm (about 15 min after going on sale, I believe a few people were able to order it before noon) and the confirmation email says release on 9/20.

I got mine on 9/20, the shipping notice came on 9/19 but did not have a tracking number.
According to UPS tracking the package left Indianapolis 11pm 9/18, and was out for delivery to me 9am 9/20.

I can understand some frustration if a box sets go to Africa, or there's only one show in the download link. But the prices are pretty good. If you take Dave's Picks for example, the pre-order early bird special is $99 for 13 discs, which is 7.62 a CD. Can't beat that with a stick.

I didn't do the math on the Giants Stadium box set, but the bottom line looks pretty good, and there's a fuckload of production engineering that goes into multi track releases.

August 1st at 11:49 a.m......release day said September 20... got my tracking number on September 18th and my order will be here by end of day Monday.. I stopped trying to figure out ship arrivals and what number I am going to get... As icecrmcnkd said some of us even ordered before noon. I can't believe they shipped a Vermont box to Africa!! Someone needs to put a top 10 or last 5 list of shipping and release mistakes!!

I ordered the CD but the download says it's available right away. But when you get to the checkout screen it says it won't be ready until October 2nd. I don't know if they're just talking about the CD or what. Not that I want to spend the money twice but I'd really like to listen to it tonight. Does anyone know if I can download the June 17th 1991 concert at this moment?

I'm on my way to pick up dinner and I put on the Dark Star from Dick's Picks 36, that I look down at the date on my dashboard and it's the anniversary. How about that.

My wife is a long time John Denver fan, and had this tune grooving in her car last night when she picked me up...(I called her for a lift home after having a few too many watching The Utes lose to Southern Cal) ...anyway, I had never heard/or even knew JD played/covered "Me and My Uncle" ....and I must say, "pretty fucking good"....and that's not just the booze talking either. I preordered the 24-bit/192Khz FLAC Giants Stadium digital box the day it was announced. I waited patiently for the 9/20 release date, got my email with the download and clicked on the link...only to discover that not only was it 16-bit/44.1KHz (i.e. CD quality) FLAC, but of only one of the shows.

Perturbed, I emailed dead.net and then decided to call also. In both cases, I was told I’d get an answer within 24-48 hours, which means around 8am tomorrow, if I don’t have a response, I’m calling back.

This is ridiculous. I’ve been buying Dead boxes - hard and soft media - for years, have been a regular Dave’s Picks subscriber since 2013. In other words, I’ve poured a whopping good chunk of my disposable income into the GD coffers.

Meanwhile, my digital order issue has not been resolved. Yeah, I know folks can say “hey, what’s the rush?” But when I preorder something, especially download format music, I expect it to be available when they say it’ll be available.

I recall having a similar problem, a couple years back, with a Jerry Garcia high res download (yes, I buy all his archival issues too!). I can’t recall the title, but I do recall the same freakin’ experience. I pay good money for music and expect it to be delivered on time. I understand delays in delivering physical media - hey, we’re all at the mercy of various postal services, customers/duty folks and more - but digital media? I mean, c’mon man, the 24/192 versions were created when they were mixing and mastering the music, so it’s not like they don’t already have the music on-hand.

So why was it screwed up on release date, and why am I about 99.9% certain that I’ll be calling dead.net tomorrow. I was told, by the agent to whom I spoke, that she had to pass the problem onto the warehouse, and that if I hadn’t heard from the warehouse by Sunday that when I called back they would be able to escalate the problem (the idea being a faster fix)...but, to quote Randy Newman, and with no disrespect to the agent (who was friendly, listened and was clearly hearing my frustration), I’m afraid “I have my doubts, Missy.”

We’ll see, but it sucks to be stuck like this. I would love to say I’ll not buy future Dead releases digitally, but the truth is that most of them sound so much better than CD quality that, with the kick-ass system I’ve got at home, it’s how I want to hear music, if at all possible. And I appreciate dead.net making boxes available digitally in high res (this past year, despite having the physical boxes, I’ve bought the 24/192 of Spring 1990 (The Other One), July ‘78 and Get Shown the Light, which I’ve now added to Pacific Northwest 1973-74...and I couldn’t be happier.

But dammit, man, I want Giants Stadium, as I should. I’ve heard some of the show I WAS sent in CD quality download format and man, what a great performance and what an *outstanding* performance. But it only makes me more eager to hear the 24/192 version, as with a recording that sounds this good in CD quality, the high res version ought to sound truly amazing.

So, c’mon guys! Fix this problem so that all of us who’ve been forced to wait longer than we already legitimately had to can finally get what we preordered...in many cases within seconds of getting the email announcing the box and that it was up for preorder.

Seriously, folks: fix this problem, please!

Looks pretty flipping cool on a guy in his early 80's if you ask me. (No they were never fans.. surely it reminds them of white kids on dope when the white kids were their kids, but apparently they have buried the hatchet and forgiven me for all the spilled bong water in the basement all those years ago. :D )

My box arrived.. it's beautiful, but I haven't had time to play it yet.

Almost time to revisit my stash. Anything from here on out is my doppelganger talking. Take him with a grain of salt.

Warlocks box set was sent with a Dick's pick, instead.
Beyond Description was returned by UPS, couldn't find house...
Boxzilla....unplayable CDs
73/74 PNW Box set.....unplayable CDs
73/74 PNW Box set (2nd) order, unplayable CDs, but different ones from 1st order. Had to combine to get a complete box set, sent other back for refund..which took way to long after they had been returned.
Garcia Eel River Box set...91 show not playable, had to return the whole box back to Garcia provisions, per their request, to get it shipped again.
Giants, pre-ordered on release date, no shipping info.
Maybe its me...should try to order under another name and address.

why can't rhino and deadnet get their shit together? I feel and agree with a lot that has been said here about another potential fiasco by rhino/deadnet. Why? This has been going on since E72, and it has not improved, still crap service, crap customer service, lies or just no info at all.
I believe an intervention is needed, but who to intervene? We, as loyal fans, deserve better treatment than this, and yet, it still continues and they don't even apologize for it, just take the cash and laugh it off like that's how business is done nowadays.

In my younger days I used to hike 14ers (14,000’ peaks), and when ever possible, I’d spark one up at the top, which because of less oxygen is pretty wild...so they often have a notepad or little register book that you can sign and leave a message. So I’d always write “420 @ 14K” lol.
So one day on top of Mt. Harvard, which isn’t a huge summit if I recall correctly, all alone, nobody around for miles, so I fire up some strong shit and just float up there, like a meditating Budda for a good while before anyone else started showing up, amazing!
So while I’m blissfully chillin’ up there it comes to me...aaahhhh now I understand what John Denver was talking about......420@ 14K!!......”Rocky Mnt. High, Colorado” ; )

I have an old CD ‘Blue Guitars’ by Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson which is very good

I'd be willing to gamble the number of incidents per shipment or per physical units is well within acceptable margins for error. It may seem like a lot more if 90% of the problems get reported here on the message board. We also don't know what it would cost to "fix" any potential issues. I don't want the cost coming out of my pocket. As long as I get my product eventually, and eventually is not more than a month's wait, I'm fine. It's not like their manufacturing $250k sports cars. It's all paper and plastic. So recently we see that the discs are made in Mexico. Maybe that was to solve some kind of production issue or increasing production cost. And maybe their way of taking care of it was to have the discs pressed in Mexico for us the fans. We don't know what other measures have been taken to fix other kinds of issues.

I remember the box cutter blues well. They shut that shit down right away. I had a couple scratched CDs in the Cornell box set due to that wacky CD sleeve that allowed them to pop out during shipping. The good Doctor Rhino and marye got me replacements with no hassle. I also hear Dave Lemeiux thank the fans time and time again for our patronage.

Complain if you want but stop buying the merchandise if you really want to make an impact. Otherwise it's just noise.

I’m enjoying the heck out of this box! Hope everyone gets theirs soon... Packaging and art/booklet are spot on, and the sound is incredible. Thanks to all those who worked to create this!

Surely if any individual feels let down by it, then it isn't. Nothing is perfect, but it always seems a positive trait to try and improve things so as not to let people down. Negative feedback may help do this, and prove to be positive in the long term. Far better to do this than simply to disappear and stop buying Dead things, I would have thought.

I have a very few problems with the system, apart from DaP #31. However, what was obviously wrong in that experience was the lack of communication. If it is obvious that a problem has occurred then it should be easy to put a comment on dead.net explaining what is being done to address it. There was little or no useful response to the DaP freight charge fiasco. Lessons should be learnt.

All points are valid and the real issue to those affected is not necessarily the error rate, it's the frustration rate. This is especially true because they seem committed to the limited numbers model, so by the time many realize there is a problem there are often limited paths to correction.. which combined with a one or two week delay (or more) in Customer Service feedback can really amp up the frustration level.

That being said, I have ordered every release in a timely manner since One From the Vault, had some issues and they were always resolved. ..eventually, and to my satisfaction. Many thanks to those that assisted and helped especially Saint MaryE and the good doctor.

I do think voicing displeasure here works to a limited effect, provided it's not too bombastic, overbearing, etc. I bet if news reached some in the band they would be appalled but Bobby no longer returns my calls.. there is that restraining order thingie with Phil.. and I frankly owe too much money to Bill and Mickey, as do many of us here. But be creative, rational and persistent and things usually do get resolved.

It's the one area in life where normalcy is a good thing. Hoping they get back to having a consistent and reliable product. Normal meaning you order it.. your credit card is charged, the product is delivered, and plays.. you enjoy it (or not) and the circle of life repeats.

Have a good rest of the weekend all.. Man.. is it fall already? Holy shit, time is flying. Who oh what I want to know-ohh.. where did the summer go.

I bought the modest looking Miles Davis Bootleg volume 4 yesterday. 4 cds packed with action-it starts with a set from 1955, on to 1958, two sets by the incredible so called 2nd Quintet in 1966 and 1967...then on to the electric sets from 1969, 1971 and 1973. Its too much, man.
This was the first of these bootleg series collections by Miles Davis that I have bought. It was very inexpensive, and includes a nice booklet. The sound is good, too. Its not all la de dah...but its much better than the "bootleg" in the title would suggest.

Incidentally, if the Dead as a band had thought their system was good enough they would have continued using the same sound system they had in 1966 on into the 1990s. And played the same set list-why change if something works? Everything that exists is a development from what was and a preparation for what will be. That's how I see it, anyway.

I have 1 - 4 and 6. The music on all is very good. I particularly like 2. The completist in me tells me that I should buy 5 but the descriptions of it didn’t really appeal. If I see it cheap I will probably succumb and buy it. So much music so little time.

No shipping notice for me either, but I typically receive my dead music about a week after everyone starts posting they received theirs, so hoping today or tomorrow. No worries over here. Plenty to keep my busy until the new box arrives.

Here's hoping this thread doesn't devolve into a ups/international shipping/taxes gripe-fest like DaP 31.

Do you think the LP version is still on track for the 27th?

I really don't NEED this, but if I don't keep on top of the things I order,,,, I forget!

Need to find out where my 50th anniversary picture disc is,,,,, I ordered it a while back?

Can be the worst thing about pre-ordering, plain forgetting you order! Though, it can be a nice surprise when you open the mail and say, "oh yeah, I order that".

On deck,,, that Nat King Cole collection that was mentioned,,, coming in November? The new Dylan boot. Another Dave's and 45 are coming.

oh yeah, one more thing. They say you always love your first Doctor (who), maybe you always have a soft spot for the Dead era you saw first. But to my mind the Dead had a power in the 80's that wasn't there in the 70's. Made it through the first show of Giant box, nice. On the video front, meh. I have never liked concert video. First, I hate the camera cuts, there you are watching a close up of someone's playing and bang, idiots in the audience! I didn't watch the idiots while there, why watch them on tape? Second I find I start thinking about what I'm being shown and forget about listening. I found it very disconcerting to see Jerry mashing his nose against the microphone!

Funny note,,,, sitting there watching the video and my son shows up. We're watching and finally he's says about Bob, "they're some short shorts". I laughed my ass off, and for an ass as large as me, that was quite a weight loss.

Number 2 is the 1969 one, if I remember rightly. The one I have been scouting around for is the second one from 1967 3cds and a dvd. Its sure shot up in price recently, but I have managed to find a second hand copy for £23.00. There's also that Plugged Nickel set from 1965 calling my name.

Yes 2 is 1969. I bought them all, apart from 5, when they came out. The kind offer from Dennis has made me look at the price of 5. It was reasonable so I’ve just ordered it.

Anyone hear back from Customer Service about a fix for the 24 bit download problems? It seems that a good number of people did not get the correct links for their downloads on Friday. I am surprised that it is taking so long to correct this issue.

Mine just touched down in Houston. 7/12/87 is on right now and so far this set seems more than worth the wait. Gorgeous packaging, especially on the book, and the sound quality is some of the best I've heard yet. Bummed for everyone who is having a hard time getting theirs, but once it's in your CD player it'll be a distant memory.

Goose bumps every time i hear this song!!!! I have this version on Fallout from the Phil Zone.... Just amazing... If you aren't a fan of this era, I know some people aren't, in fact the only 95 show i have is from 30 Trips.....
