    As we close out the 2019 Dave Pick's series, we deliver on our promise to give you the "whole thing" with the complete performance from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 and what a show it was!     A while back you all were discussing the tuning between songs. I bought myself the yellow 71 box for Christmas. I highly recommend it. Especially for those like me who still haven't received Dave's 32 yet. The 7-2 show is worth the price of the box! Anyway, it is funny to me that during the first sets of these shows they spend 1 to 3 minutes tuning between every song but very rarely tune at all in the second set. Did the instruments cosmically stay in tune for the second set?

    So, for some reason, it seemed a good idea to check out 1968 from 30TATS today. Short show (or set), but 65% Pigpen on vocals. Short and sweet, just like "they" say. C'mon Dave's 33!!

    Getting back in some Dead after a self imposed sabbatical apparently. Been binging on South Park big time so forgive me.
    Postcards Of The Hanging got my attention, so I answered. The only Dylan that is better than Dylan is the GOGD doing Dylan.
    And if case some didn't get my dad joke the other day....Thermos Tat. As in thermostat! Don't touch the thermostat! I'm guilty of saying that quite often, but I'm a dad.
    And yes. Neil Peart was Rush's primary lyricist. A lot of people don't realize that.

    Acoustic sounds

    Back in the day they only had mics, pickups were not usually used on acoustic instruments. In 1980 they were and more importantly the technology had improved greatly. Even better is the use of both mics and the direct line pickups. That’s what they utilized in 1980. Also, the mics they used back then probably weren’t as high quality like they used later on....
    The signal path back then was probably a passive splitter with one leg to the main mix/PA board and another to the tape system, or possibly only 1 feed to the main board with some kind of Aux mix out to tape. This is hard to do because your trying to mix 2 completely different things with just one board so the EQ is usually not good on at least one of the mixes...unless your aux is before the EQ stage. But I’m not sure they had that kind of functionality back then?
    In 1980, it overall would have been the same, but most likely using an active splitter and much more processing etc.
    The old stuff sounds so bad mostly because they were trying to get acoustic instruments as loud as drums and electric stuff I.e., the bass, and there is no good way to accomplish this, especially with the tech back then. Thus the mixer would often roll off certain frequencies to try and get more gain without feedback, but that’s why they often sound bad; sacrifice tone for hall volume etc..Today there are feedback suppression devices which help too.

    That's what I thought. I have to admit.. I like the clarity of the 1980 acoustic sets but I often wonder how the older stuff might have sounded if it were better recorded.

    ..but that's just me. Still glad they did it. 15 years before MTV Unplugged you have the Grateful Dead.

    The Dead just played to the mics in 1970 and in 1980 they were plugged in. I read an interview with Garcia and Weir saying how they got sounds that were not really musical while playing to the mics, maybe they were referring to feedback. I personally liked the 1970 sounding acoustic guitars more than 1980.

    Too bad they didn't record all of it.

    I have been pondering something for years.. and think I might have figured it out. To my ears, the acoustic stuff on 5/15/70 sounds better, by far, than any of the other 1970 acoustic stuff with the exception of Bears Choice. So my question or hypothesis is.. did they plug in the acoustic guitars or were they playing to the mics and the mics were wired to the reel to reel mix?

    For Warfield/Radio City they must have had pickups on the acoustic guitars, they sound so clean and were recorded on multi-tracks. ..but most of the 1970 acoustic sets sound muddy to me.

    Does anyone know the answer to this? My hypothesis is they were playing to the mics in 1970 but it's not a well informed hypothesis. For a point of reference, on the 1987 Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band run at Lute Fontaine, David Nelson's guitar was picked up by the mics, it was not wired directly to the tape mixing board.

    1970 is Magical (at least the good shows :D )

    ..as for 80's Matrix releases, I agree Dave's Picks 8 Matrix (11/30/80 Fox Theatre) sound great and is an improvement from both the soundboard and the audience (at least to my ears). It's a win/win. I can imagine redo's of this are more problematic than one might guess. First, we need absolutely killer audience tapes (Thanks Dr. Bob.. that Wagner source is sublime) and second, there must be a willingness from all parties to do this, likely meaning the audience masters need to be donated for the cause. Then there is the remastering process. I bet it's tricky.
    Fingers crossed though, #8 is great!

I just subscribed for Dave's Picks 2020. I can't wait, had to do it right away. I am really excited for Vol 33 10/29/77. I had it on tape back in the day and I haven't listened to it in at least a decade or more.

If anyone who complained about getting shut out of Vol 32 are reading this, now is the time. The subscription is up , go and get it. Even with the increase to 22K , these will all still sell out fast.

Got my shipping notice this morning. Psyched for this one. The Winterland box set really opened my ears to '73, a year I didn't previously pay much attention to. (I was young -- the tapes sounded "old". Live and learn). They've since become some of my favorite shows.

Now if the Giants box set would only find its way into my mailbox...

This is a fine sounding show that I’d love to have as an official release. The unofficial cd available in the UK sounds good to my ears.

The advice on the DaP 2020 page is to turn off the WiFi on your phone and then you will be able to place an order.

I just placed one in the cart using a Mac with Safari, but didn’t complete the purchase.

That's an old memory butch. I also became obsessed with the amityville murders. He tried to blame it on LSD at one point. You are correct on the not hearing back on the Dap32 time question. All lies. Also he never tells the limited ed.# which is a clue.-----I'm in in 2020 sub.. peace

A nice little anniversary show, will certainly see the light of Norman one day. Did someone mention Fall '73.

I have been wondering that for a long time. He disappeared from here in 2011 when either he ended his writing relationship with Rhino or they pulled the plug on Blair's Golden Road and other contributions on official releases. I don't recall him writing for any of the 30 trips shows or anything else since? Has anyone else noticed something I missed??

Note that his absence corresponds with the low point in sales for archival releases (the Road Trips rock bottom). This came about half-way through their $10M ten year contract with the band for release rights from vault recordings initiated in 2006. It also corresponds with a turning point in releases, clearly focused on stimulating more demand and most certainly trimming costs. They opted for letting out bigger box sets (E72 anyone) and migrating to the limited release model (Dave's Picks and limited #'s on boxes). Get em, pull the trigger or forever be a slave to the secondary market. (From their perspective, this worked btw.. we went from 12k copies to 22k copies in nine years).

So Blair went by the roadside replaced with David Dodd's The Greatest Story Ever Told, which I also miss. It didn't last all that long, but was a great read.

The GSET was replaced by … well, nothing. There's no direct proof I can find that Blair disappeared to cut costs, but I have to suspect this was at least partly the cause. I do miss his monthly blog. The whole thing sort of got replaced by us.. and we're quite free.

Blair still appears on Jerry Garcia Band liner notes. I think he is one of the best, and his liner notes are a joy to read.

Hey Jim, thanks for the info.

I thought his departure was within the last couple of years, but I could be wrong about that.
I thought he wrote some of the early Dave's liner notes, #1 and #7. I also thought he was listed as co-producer on Dave's 1, or maybe that was the Winterland 77 box. I always thought it was odd that to introduce the series for Dave's Picks, the liner notes were written by Blair and not Dave. Anyway, I miss his writings and his knowledge of all the tours and music. Where did he go?

I love Blair, felt like in the old days at least, like he was one of us, as compared to one of them 😉 meaning just a head, and not an employee if that makes sense? Remember when there was no internet, (BOOOO HALLOWEEN, I just scared the shit outta the youngsters!) and usually very little media coverage.......we so looked forward to the Golden Road!

I guess I may be a bit biased, but this is a pretty good show. We arrived a bit late ( it was her fault - honest!) and the band were already stuck into Help-Slipknot-Franklins by the time we arrived . I could tell even before we entered the hall, standing in the foyer, that this night was going to be better than the previous one. I couldn't believe they were playing like THIS so early in the night.

Dap 32 and Bob Dylan's Bootleg 15 (cd & vinyl) both showed up today :-)

Quick check of #32 shows sound to be just a 1/2 step better that what I had in stock.

Dylan will take a little time to digest.

Just got my Dylan Bootleg 15, as well, PLUS The Doors Soft Parade 50th box. Dave's 32 arrives on Monday. It's going to be a good week for some music appreciation.
