    As we close out the 2019 Dave Pick's series, we deliver on our promise to give you the "whole thing" with the complete performance from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 and what a show it was! An upstanding "musical eulogy" to the recently departed Pigpen, the Grateful Dead conducted a potent study in contrasts on this bittersweet night. They found easy balance between tidy jams like "They Love Each Other," "Wave That Flag," "Playing In The Band," and introspective moments on "Stella Blue," "Sing Me Back Home," and a poignant "He's Gone." It was all laid down with a discipline and a polish unheard of in any of the truly exceptional shows that had come before it. Yes, you might say, they cleaned up nice to carry on the legacy as Pig would have wanted.

    JRF, torrents come as FLAC

    iTunes doesn’t play FLAC, it will play AIFF, ALAC, AAC, and possibly WAV on PC’s.

    There is free software to convert audio files, probably more for PC than Mac.

    If you have a PC then Windows audio player might convert FLAC to WAV.
    I think that VLC (the traffic cone video player) will convert audio files.

    If you want lossless files in iTunes then you will need to import into iTunes with the import setting to ALAC. The files that you use to get imported cannot be FLAC, but WAV or AIFF will work.
    Thus, the torrent FLACs have to be converted to WAV (PC) or AIFF (MAC) before they can be imported into iTunes.

    The effort is worth it because there is a lot of music available.

    If you have a Mac and need more details on converting audio files let me know.

    Edit:
    Some people claim that you shouldn’t convert a compressed format (FLAC) directly to another compressed format (ALAC, AAC, mp3) but should first convert it to an uncompressed format (WAV or AIFF).
    I can’t confirm whether this is true, but I do convert all torrent FLACs to AIFF first.

    I read, some stuff, mostly dead or drug related, Just finished Electric kool-aid Acid test again, that one fits in both categories, drugs and the dead. Also read Billy's book recently, good read, better than Phil's book in my opinion. I also just got finished rereading Carlos Castaneda's first book about Don Juan, The teaching of Don Juan, this is a great book, forgot how much fun it was to read. I have a signed first edition which has some stories about Don Juan's concoctions and how they were made that were excluded in later pressings. Of course, On the Road is a favorite and everyone should read it at least once, love the way Kerouac writes. Back in the day I visited the house he lived in in Winter Park , Fl and they had the original copy of his manuscript on display, just one continuous page rolled up into a roll, very cool.
    Sorry but how could you not like drums>space? Best part of the show imo and the part I always waited for, Micky and Billy's beast with 8 arms was always a good time, especially when Micky played the beam. What can you say about the space section, they made it up right there on the spot, you can't get better improv than that, anywhere. Yes, in the latter years the space section would get a bit sloppy and sometimes, they would lose the crowd, but most of the time, it was brand new Dead music being made up right in front of you. Never met a Drums>Space I didn't like. For some good examples with some fantastic names provided by Mr. Hunter, Infrared Roses is the way to go, it would definitely be part of my lost on a deserted island music stash and one of the first ones I would play when smoking Jerry weed :)
    Does anybody use winamp anymore? Plays all my flacs with no problem. Don't you lose a bit of the sound when you compress shows into Mp3? Sure, might take up a bit less space, but at the cost of the sound? not interested. I have no mp3 music unless it's a show that I can't get on any other format. I agree, most dead shows can be found on etree. Get you some.
    You are right, no one does it like Jerry, end of story.

    DaveRock, thank you for the tip of the hat. Muddy Waters recordings from the 1940s & 1950s are pure gold. I saw Muddy Waters play in 1977 at the 1839 Theatre in S.F., John Hammond opened the show. Lots of great videos on you tube of Muddy, Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson from the 1960s over in Europe. When Little Walter played in S.F. on 8/9/66 , at The Matrix Club, he was backed by The Quicksilver Messager Service. Walter stayed out at Quicksilvers place and they invited Pig Pen to come out and hang out with him. Pig Pen being a drinker , they felt he would get along with Walter

    converting flac

    My buddy JUST sent me a program called "FlacSquisher", free online somewhere (or he wouldn't have gotten it!).

    Thing works very nice, very quick. I have been converting a massive amount of flac to mp3 and this little guy has cut my conversion time by 70% over the method I was using. Will preserve the id tag info also!

    FLAC to ALAC

    JRF-there is a free program that you can download called XLD that will covert your FLAC files to ALAC. I have used it frequently however my system automatically purges it every time I run a general software update on my computer so I have to redownload it every time. You can probably find a link advertised in the back of Set magazine, or uuu can just google it, thus avoiding herpes if that’s not your thing!

    CJM...drums and space don't alway sound so much to me on recordings, but listening to a recording of Wembley 11/1/90, I was reminded that when I was actually there, lost in the soup of time, drums and space were the sections of the show I enjoyed most. Its not now, listening at home- but to be there- the power of it, and the way it seemed to ricochet round the stadium at incredible volume and velocity. So maybe, to fully get into it, you had to be there, lost somewhere in the middle of it.

    Billy the Kid...tip of the hat for mentioning Muddy Waters and Little Walter in your last 5. Last month I bought a killer cd credited to Muddy Waters called "Rollin' Stone : The Golden Anniversary" . This features all the recordings made between 1948 to half way through 1952. Many, many tracks with Little Walter on harp...stunning sound...stunning music.

    I also use itunes, and no, I don't think it plays flac, only wav, mp3, and a variety of apple formats. I am pretty sure you need to first convert the flac to wav then you can let itunes convert the wav to some format it likes.
    On another note, does anybody really, really like Drums and Space? I mean is it a super popular part of the shows? I was listening to it on the drive home last night and wondering why they played it so often; maybe it was something they really enjoyed playing and looked forward to, even if it meant bathroom break for a good part of the audience.

I just subscribed for Dave's Picks 2020. I can't wait, had to do it right away. I am really excited for Vol 33 10/29/77. I had it on tape back in the day and I haven't listened to it in at least a decade or more.

If anyone who complained about getting shut out of Vol 32 are reading this, now is the time. The subscription is up , go and get it. Even with the increase to 22K , these will all still sell out fast.

No not Butch Trucks. "Butch" Defeo, guy who inspired the Amityville Horror. Will leave it at that. I did a paper on him in criminal psychology and got obsessed. I should really change it.

I am so glad I am not a robot anymore. Been trying forever to figure out how to join the group. Been a fly on the wall for a long time and have enjoyed the conversations. Just never got to add anything. Doubt if I can add anything intelligent but it's at least nice to know I can try.

Got my shipping notice this morning. Psyched for this one. The Winterland box set really opened my ears to '73, a year I didn't previously pay much attention to. (I was young -- the tapes sounded "old". Live and learn). They've since become some of my favorite shows.

Now if the Giants box set would only find its way into my mailbox...

This is a fine sounding show that I’d love to have as an official release. The unofficial cd available in the UK sounds good to my ears.

The advice on the DaP 2020 page is to turn off the WiFi on your phone and then you will be able to place an order.

I just placed one in the cart using a Mac with Safari, but didn’t complete the purchase.

That's an old memory butch. I also became obsessed with the amityville murders. He tried to blame it on LSD at one point. You are correct on the not hearing back on the Dap32 time question. All lies. Also he never tells the limited ed.# which is a clue.-----I'm in in 2020 sub.. peace

A nice little anniversary show, will certainly see the light of Norman one day. Did someone mention Fall '73.

I have been wondering that for a long time. He disappeared from here in 2011 when either he ended his writing relationship with Rhino or they pulled the plug on Blair's Golden Road and other contributions on official releases. I don't recall him writing for any of the 30 trips shows or anything else since? Has anyone else noticed something I missed??

Note that his absence corresponds with the low point in sales for archival releases (the Road Trips rock bottom). This came about half-way through their $10M ten year contract with the band for release rights from vault recordings initiated in 2006. It also corresponds with a turning point in releases, clearly focused on stimulating more demand and most certainly trimming costs. They opted for letting out bigger box sets (E72 anyone) and migrating to the limited release model (Dave's Picks and limited #'s on boxes). Get em, pull the trigger or forever be a slave to the secondary market. (From their perspective, this worked btw.. we went from 12k copies to 22k copies in nine years).

So Blair went by the roadside replaced with David Dodd's The Greatest Story Ever Told, which I also miss. It didn't last all that long, but was a great read.

The GSET was replaced by … well, nothing. There's no direct proof I can find that Blair disappeared to cut costs, but I have to suspect this was at least partly the cause. I do miss his monthly blog. The whole thing sort of got replaced by us.. and we're quite free.

Blair still appears on Jerry Garcia Band liner notes. I think he is one of the best, and his liner notes are a joy to read.

Got my shipping notice today.. Tuesday? Hopefully before.

Hey Jim, thanks for the info.

I thought his departure was within the last couple of years, but I could be wrong about that.
I thought he wrote some of the early Dave's liner notes, #1 and #7. I also thought he was listed as co-producer on Dave's 1, or maybe that was the Winterland 77 box. I always thought it was odd that to introduce the series for Dave's Picks, the liner notes were written by Blair and not Dave. Anyway, I miss his writings and his knowledge of all the tours and music. Where did he go?

I love Blair, felt like in the old days at least, like he was one of us, as compared to one of them 😉 meaning just a head, and not an employee if that makes sense? Remember when there was no internet, (BOOOO HALLOWEEN, I just scared the shit outta the youngsters!) and usually very little media coverage.......we so looked forward to the Golden Road!

EDIT; man forget just how good this 10/31/71 is, creeper indeed! The new lineup is already tight, but shits not too fully ironed out yet. Almost an Eyes vibe in there, love the rollicking segue into Maggie, hot Stephen, and this great early NFA-GDTRFB-NFA, Booyah! I have to check out more of this fall 71 stuff! Proper!

I guess I may be a bit biased, but this is a pretty good show. We arrived a bit late ( it was her fault - honest!) and the band were already stuck into Help-Slipknot-Franklins by the time we arrived . I could tell even before we entered the hall, standing in the foyer, that this night was going to be better than the previous one. I couldn't believe they were playing like THIS so early in the night.

Keeping the fall 73 anniversary streak going, check out the Morning Dew>Playin>UJB>Playin.... Second set seems only available on board. Dap 32 and Bob Dylan's Bootleg 15 (cd & vinyl) both showed up today :-)

Quick check of #32 shows sound to be just a 1/2 step better that what I had in stock.

Dylan will take a little time to digest.

Just got my Dylan Bootleg 15, as well, PLUS The Doors Soft Parade 50th box. Dave's 32 arrives on Monday. It's going to be a good week for some music appreciation.
