Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

    RE: NYE '69

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
    https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1970/12/31?source=88719

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

    limited releases logic explained

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

Hey there! I work for a Farm Craft Brewery in Virginia and we recently got accepted to have taps at the Lockn Music Festival this year. I have created a piece of art that combines our logo and labeling with a Stealie and would love to get it made into shirts for our team and possibly release a small barrel batch of bear grateful dead themed. We of course need right to use the Stealie and want to do things right! Could you please point us in the right direction of making this happen?!

probably best to start with an email to drrhino at rhino.com and explain what you have in mind so he can send you to the right folks.

Almost every time I visit Dead.net I get into technical problems. Need to hire a techie maybe? <grin>
I can't order Dave's Picks 2020. The field that says "delivery option" is blank. No choices are listed. So it won't let me continue to the "billing" section. What's up?

I have been a huge fan of the Dead since I heard St Stephen for the first time in 1988 (getting stoned before a Mountain Bike trail ride). Well, I have been watching a bunch of YouTube videos on tool restorations for the past couple of years and have decided to hopefully start making some of my own. Knowing the Dead has been into the free sharing of their live performances, I figured their music would be a better fit than all the royalty-free music that everyone uses. (My account on there is even The Dead Rabbit) . But before I just go and start using their music I thought I would look into if they had a problem with use of that nature. This website seemed like the most logical place to start! Thank you for your time John M. Albert "Rabbit"

I’m not a lawyer, but sometimes I play one on the internet.
They own a copyright on all their music.
But, if it’s playing in the background while you repair a tool, and you don’t receive any revenue from the video, then they probably won’t harass you.
I suggest that you hang a steal your face in the background to promote the band, and maybe even indicate the artist and song that are playing in the background.
Maybe you’ll convert a few tool heads to dead heads.

I think I found the Lawyer for their licensing email and basically copy and pasted my post to them with a little rewording. Thanks for the input, however, I am betting converting these guys will be a challenge. Most of them are around the age of the big bang I mean big band swing music era! LOL ..and carving a SYF is a planned project if I ever get the time!

What is wrong with the distribution of Dave's Picks Vol. 32? Mine was supposed to be delivered nearly a month ago. Tracking shows it got to my city, then it went to several other locations and eventually ended up in Franklin, Indiana, where it was "delivered." I live in Ohio. Emails and a phone call have produced lots of apologies but no correction and everything has been silence for well over a week. The impression I'm given is this is a problem affecting many, but I see no word of it here. Any helpful information?

Sorry to bug you guys here but there are no other answers available within Dead.net ...

My handle is BrooklynJed and I won the US Blues clue on November 22. I would love to claim my calendar prize and savor the victory during the coming year.

Can you please advise how 30 Days winners can claim their calendars or refer me in the right direction?

Hello Marye
Hoping you can point me in the right direction on this. I live in Canada and received a shipping invoice related to DaP 31. I emailed Dr. Rhino 3 times in August but no answer. UPS told me it was resolved when I called them in September, but then I just received a collection notice. I've emailed UPS again and Dr. Rhino again, but anything you can do to help would be gratefully appreciated! Thank you!

Marye, I am not sure you can help but I really need someone who can communicate with Dr. Rhino. I ordered the Giants Stadium Digital Box set download before it was on sale. The email I initially received only had a link to download the 6/17/91 show. I have emailed and customer services more than 10 times over the last two months to try and resolve the issue. I have received two emails from Dr. Rhino which were supposed to address my problem but they only resent me the original link to the June 17, 1991 and nothing else. This has been going on more than 2 months now. It is becoming absurd. How can I get someone to understand my problem and to address it? Thank you.

Hello??? I'm not sure what else I can do to get attention on my order. I've emailed numerous times, only to get an auto reply and a ticket number. Received no response to date (order placed Nov 30th!), at all!
Incredibly lame. I feel ripped off and want a refund at this point.

I ordered the 50th Anniversary cd dvd box on Nov. 8. Today is January 24, and it has not arrived. Worse yet, it is shown on deadnets data as not having been shipped. I contacted PayPal and today, a day later, got a message from Deadnet saying the box is on the way. So far all turned out ok and there is nothing for you to do.

In Europe there was a couple of years ago a spectacular bankruptcy of a sister company, Spincd. Lots of customers lost many lots of money. People trusted delayed shipments would arrive because the staff was cool and knowledgeable, but they also behaved fraudulently., and then bankruptcy ended all hope, and all payments went to preferred creditors. Now comes the work for you, Mary.

I wonder why nothing happened with that cd dvd box for 55 days, but it got sent as soon as Paypal came on board. My emails to deadnet were ignored, no answer, so maybe status matters even in deadworld. What do you think? A second issue is why deadnet does not give info about delays. If there are agency or economic problems, it must be better to tell customers instead of being silent and covering everything up, which gives rise to anxiety and a focus on contacting the credit card companies before their individual time bars for helping expire. What do you think and can attitudes be changed?

Regarding yr message of Jan. 24, I cannot find a reply. The issue was non-delivery of an order 137400000224956 and particularly why it was not shipped for at least 60 days. The staff over at deadnet do not answer though I have got a new report from them about ten days ago that it has at that time been sent. My concern is some kind of problem which could result in future problems in ordering. Are you geting a run-around from the shipping dept. Why would shipping of a paid for order be delayed 60 days? Well one possibility is some kind of financial iliquidity.

I still buy your CDs but I would love to have digital copies too. Why are there not packages where we can buy the CD box like the new 1976 box that includes the ability to download the digital files for an additional fee? The current pricing structure is almost as much again to get the digital files too.

is go to eBay and look for comparables, i.e. what the tie is going for from other sellers. Keep in mind that the asking price and what people are willing to pay are often very different.

OK so I appreciate that the world is kind of turned inside out right now but a small plea nonetheless - I can only assume that my copy of DP33 has got lost on its journey across the water - no sign of it here, there is just a FAINT chance of course that it might by RTS via the courier service but owing to the fact that I never even received an email advising of shipment I cannot check on this, I tried contacting you via the central email but simply got bounced back....please... is there ANY chance of my actually receiving my order, even if not before the (hopeful) arrival of DP34... sorry if this sounds like a rant, it isnt, and I totally appreciate the great stuff that you do but.....
