    As we close out the 2019 Dave Pick's series, we deliver on our promise to give you the "whole thing" with the complete performance from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 and what a show it was! An upstanding "musical eulogy" to the recently departed Pigpen, the Grateful Dead conducted a potent study in contrasts on this bittersweet night. They found easy balance between tidy jams like "They Love Each Other," "Wave That Flag," "Playing In The Band," and introspective moments on "Stella Blue," "Sing Me Back Home," and a poignant "He's Gone."     I was a freshman in H.S. at this time. I remember my uncle buddy had a homemade stereo and amp. With the colored lights and switches and the black and white 'the who' poster with the arrow pointing up from the big H. I also remember he had a Harvey wallbanger poster in 1974 which was the new cocktail at the time. Orange juice and Galliano. The old days.

    Daverock, hats off for knowing Pete's studio guitar on Who's Next. I bought the LP in October of '83 (I can remember an astounding number of dates up through college years). I was in 6th grade at the time, and had gotten into The Who shortly after It's Hard came out the previous year. I remember being hooked on Athena from the radio, and then Christmas of '82 I went up to Buffalo, where my extended family lived. My cousin and I spent most of our days listening to music (and eventually, most of our nights drinking). Well that year we delved into my Uncle's album collection, which consisted of at least 7 crates of rock music. He put on Baba O'Riley from The Concerts for the People of Kampuchea (excellent live version in their first touring year without Moon). We just kept playing it over and over, probably 20 times that week. I think it's safe to say that's when I became a Who-Head.

    Anyway, I'm babbling at this point, but let it suffice to say I eventually bought the Who's Next Deluxe Version, and learned through the extensive liner notes the history behind Lifehouse; the abandoned Who's Next recording sessions from the Record Plant in NY (featuring Leslie West on several of tracks; AND the the Gretsch 6120 he used to record the album, which was given to him by Joe Walsh.

    Rare trivia that perhaps only one other person I could think of other than Uncle Gary might be aware of off the top of their head, and that is Kevin Brandon, who posts here periodically and is also a Who-head.

    Took me a minute to get your Wonder Woman comment, but now I'm up to speed.

    Checking out 12/12/72. I've had the Bird Song in a 73/74 Bird Song folder awhile, but the time's come to get more of the show in. With limited time on my hands, it's always the (75% of the time) reduced audio quality of the soundboard recordings that send me into the Normanized archives. But the tracks I grabbed from this 12/12/72 show (aka Return To Winterland) sound pretty solid from an audiophile standpoint.

    Me and Bobby McGee - exceptionally good I would venture to say.

    Tennessee Jed - this song has been steadily growing on me for 5 years. 1972-73 is real nice. It's the instrumental jam about 4 or minutes in

    Playing In The Band - as good as the Europe 72 versions are, they get longer as the year goes on, and they good longer in a rocked out jammin kind of way, as opposed to a spaced-out jazzy kind of way (which believe you me has its place in Dead Greatness).

    Even Around and Around sounds great.

    That's as far as I've gotten.....Keith is raging loud. I wonder if Betty recorded this. They're really all pretty much raging loud.

    I'm sure none of this 12/12/72 business isn't news to a lot of you, but it's melting my face at the moment so I thought I'd pass it along.

    It would be awesome if they made software that allowed you to make your own mix from a multi-track source, and the CDs (like Veneta) came with a second CD / DVD that contained each of the tracks. Then you just open your software program, put your DVD in your drive on your computer, and load the tracks for each song. From there a virtual soundboard would come up that allows you to start mixing. Even cooler would be if there were effects you could put on each of the tracks. I would turn up Jerry and add more distortion in a lot of spots. I would turn Keith up on most of Europe '72, I would substitute Donna's scream on Playing in the Band with Daltrey's from Won't Get Fooled Again. I would have multiple mixes for all songs. Turn up Billy for that "rock out hard" mix.

    Keith - I agree that The Who only really found their live sound once Townsend strapped on a Gibson SG. On the original studio album of Tommy, they still sound like a pop band to me. On Live At Leeds/Hull/Isle of Wight they were well and truly rocking out, 70s style. For better or worse.

    Interestingly ( if you are a nerd like me) the SG that Pete played actually had single coil pickups - P90s. Other players who used SGs with P90s on their early albums were Robbie Krieger, Santana and, surprisingly, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. And he had a sound that could topple a factory.

    Also...Pete's premier studio axe in the 1970s seems to have been a Gretsch 6120, albeit one loaded with humbucking filter tron pickups. That great guitar sound on Won't Get Fooled Again?...its a Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman by all accounts.

    I am on the same wavelength as LedDed as far as Jerry and the Alligator Nash Strat (the Fender Strat has that smoothness about it that suited Jerry's style so well). Somebody on this site recently said that they couldn't think of anyone who made a Stratocaster sound as good as Jerry did (it may have even been LedDef). That comment stuck with me.

    But I also love the pure power and volume of the the SG that Daverock talks about. I think it's a toss up between Pete Townshend and Angus Young on who put that sound to greatest effect, as far as overall career impact. Townshend built an empire on it that far outlived his personal use of the guitar; you've only to listen to Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight '70 to appreciate what the SG did for The Who in '69 / '70. It's the guitar that gave Tommy a set of balls. It played a very similar role in the Dead's evolution as a band, and IMHO may have been the most impactfing facet of the Live Dead sound and success (along with the record's engineering distinction as the first live 16 track recording - this brought out an incredible "harmonic" that was spearheaded by the SG).

    But for me, the real magic would be taking somebody with the artistic virtuoso talent that might be very well suited for that smooth polished sound of the Fender Strat, and placing the Gibson SG in his hands. Imagine that. If only such a player existied. A slick player who is both fast and gentle, picking through the glowing hot interlacings of those sharp SG strings and unforgiving pickups. Whew. And then if he could glide seamlessly from lead to rhythm at need (whatever it took to serve the song). But alas, no such man exists.
    Just a fantasy band, so I may as well take a step further and pair this divinely talented wielder of the SG with a tight riff-master who could lay simple but tasty groundwork for our lead player to weave his way over, under, and alongside . Then you'd have the makings for something extraordinary and unparalleled. But this kind of talent.... simply...... doesn't...... wait.....he does exist! And his name is Reggie Hammond. No wait, that's a movie. His name is Mick Taylor.

    I would say I prefer single coil guitars to humbuckers generally-although my tastes are more inclined towards telecasters than strats. I could list dozens of players, but mention of the great Otis Redding puts me in mind of Steve Cropper of the MGs, and all the great records he played on with Otis, and at Stax generally during the 60s.

    For pure sound + eye candy a large bodied Gretsch is hard to beat-especially a 6120 or a White Falcon. I'm lucky enough to have a 6120 with a single coil dynasonic at the bridge and a P90 at the neck, a la Eddie Cochran. I'm no great shakes on the guitar...but you wouldn't believe the sound this thing makes. You can get slapback echo even before you plug it in.

    With Jerrys SG I just liked the sound of the single string solos he did with it. You could perform open heart surgery with that tone.

Just when I thought they had mined the Jerry Merle cat pretty well they come up with a very interesting release. Got it and the poster too

It’s a ploy do get us all to switch to streaming.

Blank CD-R’s are also thinner.
CD-R plastic used to be polycarbonate with BPA in it. Maybe when BPA was removed from all products was also when the switch to thinner CD plastic was also made. Maybe bulk polycarbonate costs more to make when it doesn’t have BPA in it, so to balance the additional cost the CD was made thinner.
All speculation, I don’t know for sure.

There's a title to a post called Re: Moving Pictures that has nothing to do with the Rush album, and there is another title to a post called Dark Star that has nothing to do with the song.

Streaming - not for me at this time. I only listen to the Dead and there is nothing that can replace my phone system where I have every release in chronological order plus soundboards in a second chronologically ordered list. To my knowledge there's still a ton of Grateful Dead limited edition material that you just can't get on the streaming services. Once in a while I'll pull out something different, but it doesn't make up for nearly the time I spend listening to the Dead so it would just be a waste of money. My last phase was the Rolling Stones leading up to 50th anniversary. That went on for about two years before I re-engaged the Grateful Dead.

Would love to know how artists and record companies make money anymore with all the streaming in piracy. It doesn't even sound possible to me but maybe I just needed properly explained. If I had to guess, I would say there is a direct correlation between streaming and piracy, and the high price of concert tickets. I have a feeling artist don't make nearly what they used to off of their recorded music from the studio oh, so they have to make their money on the road. But as far as I'm concerned I've seen all the good groups and I'd be surprised if a new one came along that caught my interest.

Dick's Picks 23 is rocking my optimal right now. Bobby comes through loud and clear on me and my uncle, and Tennessee Jed is no slouch either. And there's a 40-minute other one coming up... And then I'm going to listen to November 14th 1971, because I rarely go to that one and the ravings are out.

On this day in GD history, they only played four shows...

1969 Lanai Theater, CA: Pig-fest with an Easy Wind, Next Time You See Me, Boss Man, Good Lovin', and a 48min Lovelight, for those into that sort of thing. However, I can't seem to find a decent recording - even the Charlie Miller transfer sounds muddy and warbly.

1971 Austin, TX: So hot, they released it as a Road Trips... Fall of 71 is smoking! 1st set Dark Star>El Paso>Dark Star, interesting and well played 2nd set that just EXPLODES into NFA>GDTRFB>NFA!

1972 OK City: Fall of 72 - the greatest period of Dead ever? I don't know, but I know it's in the conversation... All around solid show - 1st set begins with Bertha, Beat It On Down the Line, Bird Song...BBB... Bobby is mixed WAY high in the beginning of Bertha, and you can't really hear the rest of the band, but it's pretty cool to hear Bobby isolated, and the mix settles in about half-way through. 2nd set features a 30-min Playin, followed by Big RxR, which I think is a pretty great spot for that tune. No, but thanks. :) Wait. Unless that goes into a 20-minute Victim and then one of those super-slow Terrapins with no jamming. :-O

I used to dutifully slog my way through every Lovelight, until the recently-released one where Pigpen talks about getting a gun to shoot a woman while he says something to this woman about, "Get out of here, C#%T!!" That put me off "Love"light (and to an extent, Pigpen) for good.

And yes--I, too, have had some damaged/defective discs the past few years, after having nothing but good luck for decades.

This October through December of 1973 stretch might be the Dead's best ever, to my ears. My notes for DaP 5 (11/17/73) ask if disc 2 is the best hour of GD EVER. I'm seeing a lot of 'A+' marks in my notes for this fall run.

thank you all for the good reads, Vguy, good vibes sent your way, hang in there. I too have had a bad couple of months with family in the hospital. All is better now but the bills, over a quarter of a million for hospital stay, how can they justify these prices? one bill is for a nurse, not a doctor, to visit weekly, she is here for about 10 mins, that will be 189.50$ please. Medicaid, here we come. Never in my life have I not been able to pay a bill, but this one I guess the state will have to pick up. In this state, you can't have any assets over 3,000$ to qualify for Medicaid, so now we must become wards of the state. nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile and thank the universe that all pulled thru. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not that great and there will be many more visits to the specialists and the primary dr that will only increase this financial burden, but how do you put a cost on a loved ones life? You can't. I guess this will be the last year that I will be able to justify the expense of a Dave's Pick subscription, the state only accepts expenses that are essential and necessary, and according to them, the calming, therapeutic effect of Grateful Dead music does not qualify.
One thing is for sure, if you do not have insurance in this country, do not get sick, it will ruin you plus you will receive sub standard care, as you are now officially a "charity case". How did it get this bad? Why have all the health care professionals let this happen? What's worse is everyone knows it's all fucked up, but yet, they allow it to continue and do nothing but say "it's all messed up but that's what we have to work with". I do believe that the one candidate that stands up and says enough is enough about this health care crisis would win any election hands down, unfortunately, the insurance companies and the drug companies and the medical professionals will never let that happen, all in the name of greed.

Yesterday was Give to the Max Day here in Minnesota; people are encouraged to use that site that day to give money to various MN charities and non-profits. So that day always reminds me to come on here and gently encourage people to go make donations to The Rex Foundation and Archive.org, two non-profits near and dear to Deadheads' hearts. Thanks for considering it!

First.. USam, I'm sorry to hear this news.. the silver lining is they seem to have been discharge from the hospital.. Let's hope for as full, complete and speedy recovery as possible and sending positive vibes your way. I get what you're saying though.. these issues affect us all, no one is immune and hospitalization often leaves us at the bottom of a valley with a huge financial hill to climb. My dad spent a couple months in the Neuro ICU a few years ago, the final bill was more than $1M. He's ok now though thanks to a very skilled neurosurgeon in Richmond (and the resulting proud owner of my Fillmore West 69 the complete recordings box set, we called it even St. Stephen [kidding of course]).

KF.. sorry to disappoint, but I as an avid Rush fan myself, I am ok with the twist on words.

Enjoying the positive vibes here lately too, and some I think very honest and on point reviews of recent releases. Nice deep dive on '73. I see the points made on the good and not so glowing comments too.. there is some unevenness to '73, especially in the first sets. Sometimes they seemed to somehow fit ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag (or more accurately 4 1/2 hours of music on a three disc release). 1973 always has that work in progress feel to it, but it also opens the door to some of the more creative, free flowing jammy GD that grew that year and seemed to peek (at least to me) in 74, losing some of it's luster during hiatus. 73 contains it's own bag of tricks..

Finally.. just delving into the song list on the January 73 Jerry release announced this week. I'm salivating.. there's some takes on songs I have never heard them play here.. and it's a Rex/Betty multi-track? Say what! These had to have been returned as part of the lost stash. Aren't we a lucky bunch?

I wake up each morning, eagerly hoping to learn of a release from 1968, so imagine my disheartenment(?) when I saw that the Origins graphic novel special edition would have unreleased music from 1968 ONLY IN LP FORMAT! I hope that the powers-that-be see fit to make a CD version of the Origins set, or release the music on a disc. Please!

The artwork on the singles collection is so beautiful and original. I have purchased them all, even though I don't have any means to play them! Perhaps one of those artists could be hired for the Dave's Picks series, or the mandate (if it exists--I doubt it) that the DaP art must be skeleton-themed could be relaxed? Or maybe there could be beards on the covers, but no skeletons? :) First-world problems, to be sure . . .

Holy crap is the sound good on this one. Very sweet indeed, thanks for the uplift in my spirits. This will carry me into the weekend.

..and how about Sarah Fulcher's backup vocals? Wow.. super excited for this one.

Edit: I plan on randomly adding Rush themes to the subject of my posts. Nothing wrong with having a little fun with KF2112, right? It's hemispheres weekend after all..

Unkle Sam sorry for your troubles man!! The cost of basic shit DOES seem a bit high. I realize people need to make a prophet - we all gotta eat - but even with health insurance, the costs are going up and the coverage is going down. Well, I could go on, but this ain't place.

Had a good time with DP 23 today, and finally listened to that 40 minute Other One. Twice. Good stuff. I say screw all this waiting around and just start producing and pressing CDs. Start with the Dark Star shows. Then the Bird Song shows. Then the rest of 68 - 74..........Well, I could go on, but this ain't gonna happen.

Sounds like another instance of having to make more copies to replace the ones that disappeared at the warehouse.
Maybe other people who are still waiting will start getting theirs.

Well, When in Rome, yours in Italy arrived the same day as mine, stateside. Also with no number! Hmm, what’s that all about, y’all? Scott-O, this is the longest it’s ever taken me to receive a subscription copy.

I've been on a little prog-rock kick lately, Yes and Rush have had a bit of play, good stuff. Sometimes that sound hits the spot for me.

I've picked up a few new cds recently and was thinking that I would need to have some time to give everything a few listens before getting anything else, and then I see the references here to Garcia Live 12 and that idea comes to an end. That looks smoking.

After finishing listening to Disc 3 of Dave's whatever from 11/17/72 Wichita, that has 5 songs from the show before, 11/15/72 Oklahoma City, I realized that i had 11/18/72 Hofheinz Pavilion on CD (I think a record store release). It's not the full show and only one disc..... Could we see a 11/19/72 Hofheinz Pavilion release which is an amazing show, for Dave's 34 with the bonus disc being from 11/18/72 or 11/15/72 of songs that haven't been released yet?? Over served in Rhode Island... bob t

....flies under my radar as well Bob. Not because of the contents, but because of the thin-ness. I recall it having a strong He's Gone. Time to revisit this skinny release. The cover art is strong with this one. (By artist Gary Houston. Coincidences be damned!!).
Anybody seen The Mandalorian yet? Nerd if you did. Nothing wrong with that.

Lot of good anniversary listens available this weekend.

Started 11-15-72% on the drive home from work yesterday, but got home while in the middle of Playing. Will finish that show today while running errands.
Last night in the living room did 11-14-71% and 11-15-71. I can see why Doc likes ‘71.

This is awesome! We have so many official shows available now to listen to and more on the way.
It used to be that there were a few good releases, which I burned into my synapses by listening to so many times, to supplement my hissy tape collection.
I now have 4-5 TB’s of SBD’s from the torrents, but hardly ever listen to them because I have so many (but still not enough) official releases. There are so many (but still not enough) official releases that I don’t have enough time to burn each one into my synapses (but I’m definitely trying).

But as far as I know, there won't be any late-1972 tapes returned. That era's tapes never disappeared; the Dead either had them on hand, or they did not exist.

....the series every Star Wars fan needs, but doesn't deserve. Liking Disney+ so far. Oooooh. They have Swiss Family Robinson?! One of the first movies I remember growing up. Excellent.

sorry... I almost didn't. Especially how i completely chocked on my prediction of Dave's 34 with 11/19/72 Hofheinz prediction, thought it was in Vault especially with the Soundboard that has been out there forever!!! I will wear ribbons of shame!!!!

....my mom visited Amish country with my late dad. Said her eyes were opened.
Edit. Saw Bob T's post. My mom loves Neil Diamond. Took her to see him three years ago during his last tour. Presently, he was correct. No Diamond tours currently. (It was a really good show btw).

In the late 90’s someone (not a Deadhead, but a young person that listened to rock n roll) told me that Neil Diamond put on an excellent show.

Unnumbered Dave's are promo copies typically for employees and should not be sent out to people who subscribe or purchased a la cart. But given the way things are going around here, I guess you take what you can get.

.....blessed with a great voice and awesome stage presence. His band was always top notch. How could you refuse to back him? You couldn't.

Remember in Trading Places when Dan Aykroyd goes to the door where he lives, "Coleman, there is no Coleman here you made a mistake"

There's a big Amish/Mennonite presence where I live, mostly farmers and craftsman. For the most part, they still use horse drawn buggies (black with orange reflective triangles on the rear). You see them from time to time driving their buggies on the roads to town or to church on Sundays.. pretty cool flashback, you have to slow down to like 8 miles an hour until there is safe passage. On a related note, one of my friends from college decided not to join the rat race after school and started an organic farm that still uses horse drawn plows, etc. Not much difference except he uses electricity, listens to a lot of Reggae and GD and as dreads instead of short hair and Amish beards.

Sort of cool, I doubt if many Amish are Deadheads though.. except maybe that one in the movie Kingpin (Randy Quaid).

Did you happen to walk up to one of the tougher young men in the buggy and smoosh his ice cream cone on his nose and forehead? I once saw a documentary on the Amish in Pennsylvania where that happened. By Amish law they are not permitted to respond with violence, however if one does, it is perceived as a mating call. An Amishman who brakes this law can expect at least one pretty young Amish woman to expose her breasts while washing in an open outdoor bathing area.
