Just like the singular Cornell, just like the one later called Sunshine Daydream, just like hallowed Hampton, DeKalb stands legend on its own as one of the most sensational performances the Grateful Dead ever did do. Early tape-trading circles earmarked the show as upper-echelon and when you have a listen, we're sure you'll be inclined to agree. The original reel-to-reel recordings have been shined and polished to perfection, showcasing mighty fine fret work, sparkling keys, and unparalleled harmonies. In fact, we can hardly pick favorites - from start to finish, there's just too much good stuff!
Limited to 22,000 numbered copies, DAVE’S PICKS VOLUME 33: EVANS FIELD HOUSE, N. ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, DEKALB, IL 10/29/77 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.
*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.
lack of filler
I wonder how many people are planning on ripping the discs and playing the shows primarily through a phone or computer hooked up to a speaker? My guess is many of us do this...and so the lack of filler won't matter when you're playing the show after you've downloaded it.
for those playing the show one CD at a time, it does indeed feel a bit wasteful to only have 30 min of music.
Still not sold out?
There could be a number of factors, the quality of the show NOT being one of them. What can affect this will be that the number of copies has increased by 2000 - that is a 10% increase. Also (although this is not new) only two copies can be purchased by each punter / reseller. The dismal recent record of Rhino's distribution network and customer service could also be affecting sales, particularly as the situation is now widely known. When one enters a lottery, one hopes to win but expectations are low.
Re: CKJellsen
Thanks for the Road Trips update. We wrote them but didn’t here anything back....wonder if their stoppage has anything to do with the Rhino move/warehouse nonsense? Like is Discogs/Real Gone sourcing from Rhino?
OTIS; you definitely have to check out this Seaside chat just for the background “noise” entertainment 😀
EDIT; Dicks Vol 1. Actually gave that a good workout not too long ago. Still smoking after all these years.
Unintended Consequences
I have so much Dead on cd that each year I ask myself if I truly need to keep subscribing but the fear of missing a great release has kept me on the subscription plan. It will be interesting to see if this being still available is the new norm or a lack of interest in this show in particular (77 overload, 22 minute disc, customer service complaints). Hmm.
Not sold out
Why does anyone, apart from Rhino, care whether the set sells out? I hope that my copy arrives and that others who order it get it but beyond that it doesn’t matter to me if it takes months or years to sell out. The early DP’s didn’t sell out quickly. I bought my first (DP4) in a HMV shop in Manchester, England, England well after it was released and bought all the others that I missed easily from various mail order suppliers.
Let Rhino worry about the business and just enjoy the ride.
D, all of the above
Bet it’s a combination of issues; costumers scared off by lack of service, skimpy Disc 2, more 77 releases than any other year, combined with 22K maybe being just the right number, and of course Jim’s funky relationship problems 😉
Philosophy: To Phil or Not to Fill
As the debate here respectfully presses forward, I find myself taking a step back to perhaps acknowledge and appreciate that which is being dropped into our lucky laps, and on a regular, recurring, consistent basis no less;, and that this fact alone is enough to allow me to appreciate all that this show has to offer.
Seeking to find a center by attempting to appreciate that which is, versus that which is not.
I choose Phil over no fill....it's All Good.

At this point:
Customer service does not exist,
Shipping notices do not exist,
Tracking numbers do not exist,
Warehouse does not exist,
Shipping product does not exist,
Receiving product does not exist,
But I hope everyone receives their DP33 because there is no way to get it resolved if it does not get delivered
Selling out
Apart from Rhino, I don't think anyone cares whether or not this will sell out, quickly or otherwise, except possibly people who want to buy it and didn't purchase a subscription. Speculating on the reasons behind a release not selling out as quickly as previous releases is merely a way of passing the time waiting for the item to arrive at your abode - or not, as the case may be.
Why do we care that it hasn’t sold out yet?
Because we get amusement from reading the complaints of the non-subscribers.
:)
Seems like everyone has been served this time, so that is good.
I suspect a faster sell out of DaP 34, since it’s not a supermodel but is still really hot and potentially more intelligent.
sell out
Dave is right of course - this will sell out. Doesn't matter when. I'm actually very happy it didn't sell out in hours.
I think it's great that they raised it to 22K. I also think it's great that everyone who didn't subscribe has enough a heads up from the dead on the date and time the new releases will be. Customer service issues aside, I feel like they have listened to the complaints and are doing more to make sure that these shows go to anyone who wants them.
Customer Service
It would surprise me if the lack of fill had anything to do with this not selling out yet. After all, this is a complete, and highly sought after show, plus a Betty Board so excellent sound quality. I think all of the other reasons are valid, but looking at low prices on eBay for other recent releases, I think market saturation and the lack of multiple purchases by the eBay market place are the biggest reasons. The fact that this has not sold out is probably a good thing as it means that certain price gougers that we are all familiar with won’t be able to peddle these musical beauties at huge mark up to pay for supposed “expenses”, at the true expense of real fans and listeners who may have wanted to obtain these at the normal price just for the pure listening pleasure, and weren’t able to because of scalpers. Hmmm, smacks of our large venue concert ticket situation.
On a brighter note, a huge shout out to Marye for helping me on a couple of customer service issues recently. First I am a subscriber to the quarterly 45 single releases and on the most recent volume 12 I was not emailed the digital copy. Second, on a five item order I placed in October I had still failed to receive two of the items. After simply messaging Marye she was able to get both of these issues fixed after a couple weeks of patiently waiting and communicating politely with her.
Rock on Marye and thanks for the help!
My four penneth
It probably has nothing to do with anything, but.... but this show was widely available as very good sounding bootleg for many years as well. Its never stopped me buying official releases, having bootlegs or tapes, but the fact remains that many of us already have it, and this, combined with all the other factors mentioned, may have had an effect.
I'm looking forward to Daves 33 much more than this one. Good though this is...its another 1977. Considering its not a favourite year, I sure have a lot of 'em.

Reading all this stuff
I say, just bring on the music!
Roger Waters
now for something completely different, Roger Waters just announced a North American tour for this year, 2020. It might very well be his last and he will hit 31 cities throughout the summer months. Haven't heard what price tickets will be, but it will be in the round, so any seat will be a good one. Checked out the seating chart and it shows 4 separate walkways from the center stage going in all 4 directions. Should be good, name of tour "This is not a Drill". Saw him and his band last year and tho not quite as good as previous tours, it was very good with awesome stage presence and a killer light show.
Now back to will this release ever sell out? I hope not, then when I don't get one, they will have a replacement to send me :)
I agree
MaryE is the best. She has helped me with orders more times than I can count. Lately, I have not been willing to bug her for more help because with the current situation I don't want to overdue it. I am not sure at this point how to get my November orders resolved.
Rocky & Bullwinkle reference non-withstanding....
....Waters shows are primarily politically based these days. Breathe. Breathe in the air.
Regarding DeKalb not selling out. I dusted off my cassettes looking for it. Never had it, so it's new to me. If '77 is a supermodel, I pick Gal Galdot as my 10.29.77.
https://youtu.be/sfM7_JLk-84
....because she's Wonder Woman and it's 1984, and she's beautiful.
Hey Rocky.. Watch Me Levitate Garcia
...(that trick never works)…
They say everyone is either a Beatles person or an Elvis Person. If you like Pink Floyd.. you are either a Waters Person or a Gilmour person. I am squarely in the Gilmour camp. That being said.. I had to be talked into seeing Waters a couple years on his last tour.. but by good friends so I went. Yes, there were a few songs that had video that railed on Trump, but the music and the stage show were way beyond what I expected.. It was very well done.
My two cents, it's easy to tune out the politics when the music and sound quality were exemplary. I will make this if prices aren't through the roof.
I believe Bobby started off the 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden show with "Hey Rocky, Watch Me Levitate Garcia" (...that trick never works...) which he borrowed from both Rocky and Bullwinkle and the parlor trick they did on Letterman the night before (shown below).

Waters tour stops in Vegas Sept 4th....
....next stop. LA. The 10th. You can't fool me Roger. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The political cesspool should be in full swing by then.
I'm buying a ticket.
I was at that show! They…
I was at that show! They played there because a gig was cancelled and they had an open night. It was very good - they seemed to me to be in a rockier mood that night. It was just great. It was at an NIU field house, so there was a little echo going on.
Which one's Pink?
Jim...or a Syd Barrett person ? As far as live shows by remaining members go, I would opt for going to see Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets before Roger Waters or Dave Gilmour. Incredible set lists of music from Pipers up to Meddle. Last time I saw them they opened with Interstellar Overdrive ! Took the top of my head off.
Syd for me
I remember buying ‘The Madcap Laughs’ the day it was released. What a great album. I was never a great Floyd fan although I did see them in 1971. They were not as good as either Zeppelin or King Crimson who I saw the same year. I wish I had seen Zappa, Sun Ra or Tony Williams Lifetime with Jack Bruce who all played at Liverpool University that year rather than Pink Floyd but you can’t go back.
No matter who I saw over the years my elder brother can always bring me down to earth by saying how often he saw The Beatles at The Cavern and other venues in Liverpool in the early 60’s.
Saucerful of Tourdates
Yes.. would love that, but I might get very old waiting from them to come here. Are you suggesting a European trip? Perhaps that's long overdue..
Shocked it's not sold out
It's been over 24 hours. Returned Betty Board. What gives?
Anyone else notice that when…
Anyone else notice that when there is complaining or this talk of all the unshipped orders and lack of customer service help from the Store here, that a group of users shows up to talk about other bands / other music releases??
This exact same thing happened back in Nov, Dec, in the comments section of DP 32... Great way to get our posts off the product page or off the first page of comments and buried down... it was The Who and the big Woodstock Box last time. All the “so happy there are so many other good releases coming out from Rhino” was suspicious to me then. Now I see it happening again... Feel free to call me crazy 8^P
Re: JRiggy
No.. that's not the case. People talk about other bands and music pretty regularly, there is no correlation between someone complaining and talk of other bands coming up. Normal flow.
Other ones
Yes, talk of other bands regularly crops up here without plan or ulterior motive. In fact...its going to happen again..
Colin...I never saw Sun Ra in the 70s, but I have caught the Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen a few times over the last 10 years, and they are well worth seeing. Quite a feast for the ears - and eyes!
We talk about beer when we want to turn the conversation
No, wait.
We talk about beer because a lot of us really like beer.
Personally, I like to listen to the Grateful Dead when I drink beer.
Jack's abby IPL
I'm drinking beer now. A hoppy India pale lager 6.5%alc. Ibu's 65.
Everyone's Favorite Fun Game
When we are not talking about music and beer we are usually conspiring to take over the world or organizing a coup overthrow the government. Normal stuff like that, nothing too ambitious.
The Cooler
Ha, interesting thought Jriggy, like the one off player sent to a hot table in a casino....The Cooler! Or a whole group of them....conspiracies abound!!!
By the way, did someone say something about Robert Hunter 8 tracks for sale?
Topics & captcha
I kind of enjoy having a variety of topics on here, particularly when people talk about other bands they like.
Speaking of topics, I read a very interesting piece on captcha today, I think a lot of folks here would enjoy it. Can't remember the exact title, but it popped up in my newsfeed today.
Last 5:
John Kay and Sparrow-CBS re-issue from early '90's
Spooky Tooth-The Last Puff
Dennis Coffey-One Night At Morey's, 1968
5/9/77-Buffalo
Punch Brothers-All Ashore
Hoping to have Dekalb by next Friday!!
Topics, Complaints and Occam's Razor
The random topic changes on these threads help keep it interesting, and the discussions of music, both dead and others, has turned me on to a variety of things that I might not have discovered but for a reference on these threads. The complaints come up regularly, and it is unfortunate that folks have problems with orders or defective products - I've had a couple myself - but if these threads deteriorate into nothing but complaints I suspect most folks here will lose interest pretty quickly. I much prefer the deadhead driven random topic changes, jokes and musical references and suggestions that currently make up most of these threads.
As far as the Occam's Razor reference, what I mean is that the simplest explanation for topic changes, even when they occur at a time when there are complaints being aired, is that someone had something else that they wanted to talk about and posted accordingly. I can't imagine that Rhino or Warner would devote resources to have someone spending time to post just to move complaints off of the first page when they could just delete the posts with complaints or shut the whole thing down. But don't let me distract from a good conspiracy theory.
Bluegrass
I got in mood for the song Off To Sea Once More.. being too lazy to get out the CD.. I YouTubed it and somehow this article came up on my screen while I listened.
https://www.leafly.com/news/lifestyle/a-new-generation-opens-up-about-t…
Puts the grass back in bluegrass and provides a little covert history.
Encapsulated Marigold
Before its too late, I would also like to recommend Syd Barrett's " The Madcap Laughs." My favourite post Ummagumma album from within the Floyd bubble. An astonishing record - what the others sang and played about he appeared to be. And this record is like a postcard from the subconscious.
JIMINMD/Blugrass
Nice article, thanks for posting it. I probably never would have heard of Billy Strings, if it wasn't for the folks on here posting about him, now he is one of my favorites.
Good to hear!
Thanks guys. I dont come around posting that much (but have time for that to change now), so this was just the response I was hoping to hear. What I didn’t want to think —but obviously was— was that a couple Rhino moles were starting ‘subject changes’, as I’ve seen that very thing happen elsewhere... Cary on!
I hope
I hope this show gets my attention more than the November 1977 Dave's Picks at Binghamton. I don't know why I don't reach for that one more often. There's nothing really not to like about it. Shows have a way of sneaking up on you. I've never heard this October 29th show so maybe this will be the one.
In a way I am pleased that this one did not sell out so quickly. I am hoping it influences wgat they release for the last two picks this year. I would like to see a 1972 show and something like Dave's Picks 6, where we get 2 shows from 69/70.
I think I missed any announcement about bonus material for the May release. I know they said the release will be the June 23rd show from 1974, but what goes along with it? May is bonus disc time. Does anyone know?
January 24 Release Date
If today is the release date, has anybody received a shipping notification?
Dave's 34 bonus disc is from 6/22/74, the night before.
I have been listening to 6/18/76, download series #4. This is a really good show, great sound and Mission in the Rain! St. Stephen, Eyes. Good stuff.
This Eyes of the World
....from 10/29/77 is quite interesting for the period. Instead of hyper-fast playing, they actually approach this one with a very noticeably slower tempo, reminiscent of when they slowed things down in Spring '90. It makes this version truly stand out among all others in '77, and beyond, for that matter. Not sure what got into them on this date, but the difference is welcome if for nothing else than a brief audio divergence for a moment in time.
Looking forward to this.
Sixtus
Binghamton Eyes
Minas, The Eyes on DaP Volume 12 is really exquisite. Probably my favorite "fast" Eyes.
Though the nearly 5 minutes of patient metronomic precision that precedes the first verse belies the usual rush job reputation handed out to fast versions of Eyes.
“Everyone’s favorite fun game”
Don’t forget conspiring to raid the vault! Hey Keithfan, I thought you were on that?
Diverse music, beer, weed, bluegrass (nice article Jim), pretty much everything is fair game here except religion and politics, or blatant bad vibes. There’s far too much of that Bullshit in the world all ready!! This is our sanctuary from the madness of the straight world, just like the Dead scene was and has always been. Yes it’s primarily about the music, but it’s also always been about community and learning; “strangers stopping strangers, just to shake their hand” and “all we ever wanted was to learn and love and grow”...”so light up a smoke honey and have yourself a ball, cause your mothers down In Memphis and won’t be back until fall”
Stick around and free your mind and you can learn a whole lot of cool stuff from a bunch of diverse groovy enlightened folks, some who’s knowledge, especially of music, continues almost daily to blow what’s left of my mind!
GRATEFUL GRASS; speaking of weed, beer, and bluegrass, Keller Williams Grateful Grass will be headlining our little BonFire Brewery Music fest this year, should be 👍
EDIT; speaking of diverse, how was that absinthe for you seekers?
DBL EDIT; Vguy, that is blasphemous talk! Lol
Speaking of beer ...
... did you hear about the special 8-track only release of the Gainesville show for Thrift Shop Day?
Eyes of the World
You had me at Eyes...
Running errands today and as soon as I got in the truck and turn on the radio (GD Channel of course) I heard the unmistakable first chord of the Louisville 6/18/74 Eyes of the World. I know that one from the tone of the first chord, unmistakable and one of the best ever played (in my humble opinion). The coda out of the main body of the song in that performance is spell binding.. Is there a name for that coda? I think I called it tighten up once and that didn't go over well.. :D
More on Eyes.. because it's Friday and well... why not?
http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2013/12/eyes-of-world-field-guide-guest-…
..I chortled my coffee when I read Wade's 8-Track release announcement of Gainesville on thrift shop day.. it's after 12 here.. shouldn't I have been coughing up my beer? In any case, well done and for me officially marks the beginning of the weekend.
Yes, where are we on that tunnel under the vault, KF2112?
So a conservative priest, a liberal monk and an independent rabbi were drinking it up in a bar the night before the big election. Just then this imam in a tie dye walks in and the rabbi says.....
