    During the mid-1970s, the Grateful Dead saga was unfolding like a Greek classic. The Sisyphean Wall Of Sound had nearly broken the band. From it spawned a Medusa head of countless side projects, all deliciously fruitful but woefully not the same as the whole. The chorus lay in wait, pondering the reemergence of their heroes, and wondering if "THE LAST ONE" had really been it...

    But in early 1976, Apollonian light and healing would shine upon our intrepid wanderers once again. No more epic battles for the people with cops and lines and tightness, the Dead would return triumphant in smallness, playing intimate theaters and renting equipment along the way. No more ticket scams and greedy promoters, they'd give back with first ever mail-order ticket program, one that had a few kinks to work out but eventually served the fans well.

    Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead. It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean was in lock-step with the sirens' call. Jerry and Bob delivered orphic delight with solo musings like "Mission In The Rain" (the only tour they ever played it on), "The Wheel," and "Cassidy," emboldened by group effort. There was fresh repertoire from Blues For Allah, breathing new life to the Dead's continually morphing sound - as Weir once said of the '76 tour, they wanted to play "a little bit of all of it." Old favorites were re-envisioned with cascading tempos and unique sequencing, making the crowd question if they'd ever heard these songs before. And there was comfort and joy in the familiarity of watching the band make it up as they went along. By all means, it was clear that the bacchanalia of live Dead would reign on.

    And now the revelry from this epoch, evidenced by the near-studio quality sound captured on two-track live recordings by Betty Cantor-Jackson, lives on, bolstered by Jeffrey Norman's HDCD mastering. It's housed for posterity in a handsome box featuring original art work by Justin Helton. It’s documented in liners by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon. And it’s ready for a spot on your shelf.

    I seem to lack the discipline to listen to listen anniversary shows. I was all prepared to start the 1990 boxes ( thanks again, Oroborous ), with the excellent 3/14/90 show this morning...but last night I finished up on the first PNW show, 6/22/73, and although I started on 3/14/90, I had to take it off and carry on into 1973. 6/24/73 playing sweetly now. I'll start the 1990 boxes after the PNW. Although by then it may be time to start Europe 72 again. Maybe I should just forget what day it is.

    First, been digging Scooby Doo, thanks Doctor, er a Senator! Perfect choice, besides that beautiful DS, that Eyes! Hard to believe it was like what, a month old? A tad Allegro for a pre Hiatus, but in a good way, like many of the new ones over the years, you could just tell they were eager to rip it up. Also, really dug the WRS prelude only, also a tad Allegro. Makes me think it might of been cool in a different way to just leave that one at that. Perhaps a bit more finished, but it’s own self contained little instrumental. Imagine more of that one, Sage & Spirit, Serengeti, Stronger than Dirt etc, interwoven like the way they did with in and out of songs and drums in 76...you know, just snuck in some of those instrumentals here and there...quick in and out, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean?

    So, while we’re in the midnight hour, and we’re floating on the haze of the gentle green beer glow, just want to thank all the beautiful folks for all the thoughts and kind words! With that, please allow a couple of relative memories.
    So back in the early days Pops often would Chaufeur us Pre Beavis and Butthead shitheads to and from concerts. Often, instead driving back and forth, he’d stick around and eventually vacate the front door, which would lead to him chatting up some cop. They would enviably get around to the show when my father would ask something like “so what’s this all about” or some such thing, to which the cop would 9 outta ten say “oh, you wantta go in and check it out”? to which the old man would fain “oh really, wow, that’d be great”. So the cop would tell him to wait and look for his sign, which when it came would have the old dude breezing right on in, lol. So of course this meant some of our early dead shows, and right from my first one he really dug Sugar Magnolia, One Mo Saturday somewhat to, but Mags was his tune. He would sometimes ask us to play it too!
    Second tale: one time the rents were off to FLA to see Gramps, and he had to move my car out of the driveway early the next morning when they left. So after yet another night of debauchery, aaa, an associate of mine, unbeknownst to myself, had left aaaa, “alternative cigarette” on the front seat. So next day, I’m finally up and all happy, beautiful spring day, have the house to myself for 2 weeks... so off to wherever in the morning, ah, more like afternoon in those days, and just like that, (que sound of plane spiraling into the earth)...there’s a note on the front seat, along still with the joint...”is this what I think it is?” We need to have a talk”....Fuuuuuuuuuuuudddddgggggeeeee, only I didn’t say fudge!
    At first I was like WTF, but then I figured, hey, it’s a nice day, I have this here J, buy the ticket take the ride. What can I do about it now. So “I’m all stressed out Jerry” and finally, for good or ill, he calls a few days later: they made it, your grandfather says hello, the weathers great, played gof etc”....not a word! Hee-hee, not a word to the day he passed!
    Pops had his short comings and faults like us all, but for his background and generation, he could be pretty hip!

    Nappy/Billy: those look like sweet shows.
    Nappy, wild story. I love stoned, spooky, powerful places like that. Very interesting energy I bet.

    Ok, back to warm hazey green beer glow...accompanied by drums and space...

    Nappy, thats a great story! Those poor folks in the Donner Party sure could have used some of those PB & J sandwiches . I wonder if that is a lonely area at nightime. My friend visited Little Big Horn toward sunset, he was out there by himself and said it was a very lonely place.

    For the Reno show the plan was to leave LA about Midnight or a bit earlier...the thought was we'd drive in a friend's, what else, VW van...the owner was a sweetheart of a young lady that I had met (along with her girl friends) in line at the Student Event ticket booth at UCLA for a Pauley show a few months earlier...there was going to be a total of eight of us or so going...we were leaving at night so we could catch Sunrise over the Owens Valley hitting the Sierra Nevada peaks to the west...well of course as we packed in the van it didn't start...we tried for nearly an hour and nothing....I left in a taxi to the Burbank Airport and caught an early flight to Reno...funny thing was the PA system in the airport lobby made an announcement garbling my Mexican last name and adding Dead Head..."will Ric Or Valerie Deadhead please use the Courtesy Phone" I answered (this was about 6:00 AM by now) and it was one of the ladies saying the van had been fixed by one of our friends and they were on their way and would see me later in Reno...Yay!!! We hooked up and the following day headed out to UC Davis...after we passed Truckee and started to climb up into the Sierras the van started acting up again...we got off the Interstate and pulled into a small parking lot...The friend who had worked on it the previous early morning got underneath it again...of course it was snowing as we all got out...I made a PB & J sandwich and took a stroll around the parking lot...I noticed a marker at the end and walked over to it to read what it said..."On this site in 1847 the Donner Party..." oh shit...I finished my sandwich, but oh shit...then I realized we were parked at Donner State Park right by Donner Lake...man oh man...

    Well, I could tell a few puke tales, but I have perhaps a more traumatic experience. Certainly more amusing if you weren't involved. Early 90's, my wife and our large Akita, maybe 115 muscled up pounds in our compact Dodge Shadow were driving from Syracuse, NY to Waitsfield, VT for a short stay at my parent's vacation place. Somewhere at the edge of NY state we stopped to get something to eat at a McDonalds just after dark. My wife went in the place and I took the dog for a quick walk in the adjacent weedy/grassy vacant lot. Almost immediately he lunges at something and before I can even react he is pulling back. I didn't see anything in front of him and then I notice that he is shaking his head and pawing at his nose just about the same time that I smell the overpowering odor of skunk. He got sprayed in the face by a fucking skunk halfway through a 5 hour drive. I put the dog in the car and walk into the McD's and head towards my wife. Before I even get to her there is sort of like a wave that passes through the people around me and they all turn to look at me. At that point I realize that I smell as bad as the dog. The dog was so distressed he couldn't even eat his hamburger. I mean we tried to wipe his face off, but have you ever tried to clean a dog after it gets sprayed by a skunk? It doesn't really work under the best circumstances, so you can imagine the lack of success with a few napkins. Since it was cold weather we spent the rest of the 2-3 hour drive alternating between freezing and choking on skunk fumes (not the good kind). Funny now, but at the time it was a super drag.

Early box might be because of 50th anniversary releases coming later in the year.

very nice ordered,,, sounds a little cleaner than my current copy. This appears to give us the complete (?) boston run. 6-9 is a road trip and 6-12 has parts (have to say parts with a boston accent).

Will NOT tell wife. She informed me to stop buying until I get a job.

Is it proper to tell wife of 40 years, fuck you?

Dave L. Toss in 7.13.76 Orpheum Theatre bonus cuts. Was just listening to this one. What happened to release of final Orpheum performance?

1976 shows are fire sauce. This is going to be a smokin hot box set desert island Dead. I missed the giants stadium set. Gotta get this one

I went to Hampton Coliseum for dead and company in November. One of the discs spinning was 6.29.76. Pure gold

Other 1976 shows I have heard recently are from Portland, Rochester, Columbus, and Cincinnati. All of the are really sweet.

Sugaree from Columbus is really cool

9.26.72 ~ Bird Song ~ about ten minutes in. Jerry sends in the Mind melters

Was just reading the Rob Eaton story about the Betty boards return. This looks immensely cool.

I guess I better do my taxes now and hope it's still available when I get my returns. These always seem to come out at the time when I'm strapped. I suspect this will be available for a little while, but you never know.

Sweet. I've already got all of these except 6/14 and they have always been some of the best played and sounding shows in my vault.

...but you know these are gonna sound waaaay better. And with these shows, that's saying something.

Originally had all of the shows on cassettes, then CD-R, then digital upgrades. Can’t wait to hear them all polished up.
6-19 has always been an FM copy, so that’s the biggest upgrade.
They’re all grate but 6-14 has always been my favorite.

Last night I'm in the basement, to spin on the bike. My GD collection upstairs is 1966-1975. Downstairs I keep 1976-1995. So I pick the Capitol 6-17-76 (DaP 28) to listen to whilst spinning. Some amazing playing that reminded me that not all '76 is languid, which is my stereotyping of that year. Let's face it, every year has killer shows and ho-hum shows. So when this sucker popped into my email in-box, I thought, well, that's synchronicity. Then I looked at the show dates.

I was in Boston for one of the four nights in June '76 and clearly remember getting hassled by street walkers en route to the show and on the drive home we had to pull over and sleep in the car.

I caught one of the two nights at the Beacon in NYC. Not sure which.

And I caught the night at the Capitol when they opened with Help On the Way, which is in this box.

So, good chance this box delivers 2-3 shows I attended that year.

And let me say this: they returned from their hiatus in June and played 19 shows -- fresh, excited, etc.

Finally, I think Dave has an obligation to get as many ABCD/returned Betty Boards released as swiftly as possible and this continues that trend of the past 3-4 years. Very glad to have this. And maybe we get another in the fall???

I think my goggles has gotten boggled… does that really say Dancing>The Wheel>Sugar Mag Scarlet Begonias>SSDD?? Have to check that out! 6/15/76 happening to be the one of the four I’m not familiar with.

Looking forward to this (I've over due for a new box).

DaP 33 was my “acid test” - if it arrived safe and sound, with no hassle, then I’d feel confident The Great Warehouse Debacle Of ‘19 was behind us, and all systems “Go!” to order with confidence again - it was received without a hitch, just like the days of yore, so no problem seeing my way to order this June 1976 gem of a box set!!! (I hope everyone has had similar good fortune.). Hurry up Spring!!!

This is an excellent surprise, I hadn't expected an announcement anytime soon, let alone a box due 3/20. As much as I liked DaP28 6/17/76 and '76 in general, I am psyched for this box. I know you can't judge a show by the set list, but the set lists for these shows look pretty cool. Thought about waiting to order, then thought about missing out and put the order in now. Curious to see what the rest of the year brings.

Actually I received a 20 percent discount when I sent a text to rhino about the 3 month wait on the july 78 box and they apologized for the delay. So I used it to buy the Nightfall of diamonds show. They finally said no stock left. Sad. But I did buy one on ebay for $180.

I wouldn't go as far as Patagonian Fox in saying that releasing any box sets from the 1970s is now redundant. But releasing anymore from between 1976-1978 may be. At least until the primary years are properly served. ie 1966-1969.
