With news from the front lines.
Blaspheme warning: This may contain heresy.
OK, I get why the consensus is that 4-8 is better than 4-7 but....
I like 4-7-72 better. The 4-8 from Dark Star on is amazing and unique but it is more primal. And while I dig Phil's insistent bass groove in the Caution, I mean he's leading the band at that point, but the DS gets a little disjointed at times. And there are better versions of Pig's songs coming later in the tour as well even if that Mojo is darn good. Now Jerry on pedal steel is more my cup-o-tea and even Phil singing a duet with Bob on that LLRain can't spoil that (truth be told he does a good job of it). And of course the MLB jam is great and they had a few notes leaning that way in 4-7 but never got there. But.... I was floored by the 4-7 second set altogether. It just builds and builds and, as I previously said, the Sugar Mag>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA closing just hit me right. Jerry en fuego! And every first set song was done to perfection so it's close but 4-7 edges out 4-8 for me.
So onward to Newcastle! Storm the battlement! And thanks for the support. Cleansing with classical this AM.

Great.. just great

So now I have to get another book before I delve into E72. Just great...

If you google Blogspot Europe 72, the first listing is a reprint of the old Europe 72 Notebook that has been floating around on archive dot org for a dozen years or so, except it is in the correct order and mildly edited. Most importantly, it looks like they added many pictures of each venue. It really gives you a better feel for what it must have been like to be there. ...and man, there are some historic venues on that tour. For me, it would be worth it the next time I am in Europe to visit one, three or all of the venues (assuming they all still exist), just for kicks and giggles.

The GD did all kinds of things wrong in their tenure, but this tour was not one of them.

mmm.... The Other One is working this WE, hitting something epic and it sounds like officially released? oh the pressure.. If you're going to warm up the tube amps.. goodness.. the DS>MD from DP19 (hey, it's 73), DP16, DP4, 2/14/68, Feb and March 69, 4x/5x 72 or go for one of the other multi-tracks, any of the From the Vault, the WD or AB 50th's. The picking is the easy part, keeping the plaster on the ceiling, not so much.

I'm also a big fan of 85 for the same reasons mentioned. Also, taking the risk of introducing all those new songs. It was like they were climbing out of a rut and freshening up the place with vibrant and loud electricity.

For the second time this year, JimInMD isn't working. I have no idea why... Why do you mock me so oh dead net website?

My way is hard, but I find it worth it, though perhaps why I haven’t done this whole tour, YET.
In fact, I’m not sure I’ve even heard every show yet? All the Dark Stars to be sure, but not all The Other Ones.
Yuck, yuck, see what I did there ; )
I have this book staring at me I’ve not read yet as I’m probably saving it and the remaining shows for when/if I do take the Pepsi challenge…it’s called Europe 72 Revisited by Howard F Weiner. (Think I have one by him on Cornell too?)
But after just randomly glancing it mentions the first England shows we’re supposed to be 4 at the Rainbow, but the place went outta business right before the tour so ole Cutler had to punt and go with 2 biggins at Wembley. He then starts to mention how good 4/7 is and how he, like many, perhaps overlooked it due to the greatness of 4/8 etc…
Hmmmm, sounds familiar lol
ONWARD! You go 1stshow, man if I knew I had the time I’d be tempted…

I just hit 11/20/73: never heard more than the RT taste. Another looonnngggg but fine 73!

Everyone is right

There's clearly no right or wrong way in how we listen to all these shows. For me, with E72, I have started to think of them in terms of the few shows in one country, and listen to them before moving on towards something else. For example, the first three shows in England stand as a whole for me. So I listen to them one after the other - then take a break. Then go on to Denmark and do the same thing. The first three shows are so good I defy anyone to just listen to just one of them without listening to the next. But I don't want to over do it, so a break comes in handy - then the next one sounds fresh and will blow my socks off like the first one does.

Oro - I think you listen more deeply than I do!

Other Music DR…

…just not Dead. But hey, that’s just my methodology.
If I start listening to other Dead, I lose my hyper focus of the tour and all the little things, the nuances. I need to marinate in the shit lol
It’s like sometimes you switch to a different kind of beer midstream, one you know you really like, but because of the style of the one you were drinking is so different, the new one doesn't taste right. It’s your taster is off…
Best example is in 2021 when I did all of 1971 in order, listening to Phil figuring out his line in PITB. Every one was a bit different until he had what he wanted. If I was listening to other dead I might have missed that…
It’s hard to go a whole tour and not switch it up, but I think it’s the best way to do it!
Now a little Jazz or something else now and again,sure, but no other Dead!
But again, that’s just me…
I did hit the 4/7 stuff from Steeping out. The energy is like a fright train. You can tell they were itching to play!
But I think their holding the stick a little too tight because of that. I can hear JG saying something like “we have the whole Europe scene watching us so we can’t Fuck up…no pressure or anything lol”
So to me sometimes it’s a bit off the rails. But I like em when their going beyound the comfort zone, that’s why I like 85 so much. Sure occasionally there is an accident, but that’s ok when yer riding the edge!
The amazing part is, as good as this one is, it’s kinda just a warm up and indicator of what’s ahead!
Just amazing they could play that consistently at that level for 2 months straight AND get into all the shenanigans!

And yaassss, ole Jimmy Bufet, may the Caribbean winds blow him safely home to the big Cheese Burger in Paradise!

Report from EU

I won't try to do reviews on every one but maybe in groups of a few at a time.
DR was spot on. 4-7-72 gave me a new perspective of that year. It was:
- Polished, energetic, and played with stamina.
- Darn near perfect, as if trying to impress.
- Had a religious experience moment for me in GDTRFB where I kept saying Jerry is a monster by '72, and how does he do that. Just keeps coming up with a new riff every few seconds. Unbelievable. Rivals anything I can think of from any era.

Jimmy Buffett

has passed. Used to see him regularly in Florida, every year for many years. A great excuse to get out there and have a little fun and get a great buzz. Been a while since I saw him, he got real busy there after a while and wasn't around the local bars that he used to frequent back in the day. Many a time down in the keys he would be there and he would discuss those "square groupers" that had been seen floating around back then. After one peeled off the outer layer that most were wrapped in what was inside was usually "gold". I remember a great show back in 1980, Jimmy opened for the Eagles and he had a broken leg. Of course he did "Margaritaville" and had changed some of the lyrics to include his mishap. Blew out my flip-flop, stepped on a pop top, broke my leg had to crawl on back home, man I'm in real pain, wish I had some cocaine, but that's been gone since early this morn. a gifted wordsmith for sure. RIP Jimmy, may those Jamaican winds blow you safely home.

I would have thought that was essential if your going through a box the size of E72. You don't want to put yourself off it. Obviously very different following a tour at home than it would have been in the flesh. But even if you had been following this tour in real time, as it happened, you would have heard other music in between shows. Unless you're a monk.

Another synchronicity there, Oro. Was just over in Maine with old friends, one of whom I had not seen in many years, he was on stage security that night at the racetrack fairgrounds and helped us get down front for the zenith of my too small handful of Dead shows. He reminded me that Roy B was feeling no pain but still played Nancy like no one else ever could, Levon and the Cate Bros, what a show. End of summer, end of tour, just could not have been better. Many recordings but apparently no clear SBD, otherwise mandatory for release. That friend had been searching for the lyrics for Jaime Brockett's Legend of the Titanic, pleased to locate for him.

Orange Sunshine

I remember Buffalo '90 we had motel room like right across the street from the stadium I know it was in walking distance. Anyway we went up a day ahead and went to The Anchor Bar for wings and pizza. Then we went to The Falls Canadian side my buddy had family up there. That night we got back to the room we took the bed spread off the beds and went down where they were camping and stayed up all night eating Orange Sunshine and drinking Fosters.

If I waxed poetic, I’d go on and on about this Dark Star, but mostly I wanna say, it’s got the Vibraslap, and I love the Vibraslap, especially in Dark Star, and therefore I love this Dark Star.

Can’t beat a Classic Version like this. You get the Xylophone, Cannon, William Tell Bridge, it’s all there. This is a great St. Stephen of old.

Sir Ron McKernan aka Pigpen with his blues and soul. I’ve come to feel that Pigpen is a tragic figure, and the band would forever change with his passing, but here he is young and alive and that’s how I like to remember him.

Note:
When they rehearsed and played St. Stephen with regularity, like in 1969, it was such an amazing song.. alas Jerry would remark that he felt that the song was a cop and due to that and less time spent rehearsing, St. Stephen would leave the garden.

If you watch the Grateful Dead Movie with the director’s commentary, Susan Crutcher tells a pretty fascinating story about how, she wanted to include St. Stephen in the section with the photo montage and Jerry was like, we don’t even play that song anymore, and Susan said yeah but it’s sooo good. And while listening to the song repeatedly during the editing process, Jerry’s interest got peaked and that led to the band resurrecting the song in 1976. The story holds water as they were editing the movie in ’76 when St. Stephen came back. Not to mention Susan strikes me as a cool person who would have no reason to embellish a story like that. I found that to be pretty cool and wanted to share.

I just remembered that right before set 2 the band on the stage and the camera rolling a camera guy center stage got me giving the thumbs up as he panned the crowed I know he saw me cause he smiled. Hope it makes it on the official video.

Taboo Subject, Let the Good Times Roll

Not sure why this would be a taboo subject here.. the band certainly didn't try to hide it. Besides.. most of this is folklore by now, happening between 55 and 25 years ago. It could be just because I am old and in the way.. but you don't see or hear of it that much these days.

I enjoy reading peoples stories, most of which (probably all that are told on these threads) by far predate any statute of limitation. Like it or leave it, this is American and World History. Let the good times roll (deja que los buenos tiempos pasen, deixe os bons tempos rolarem, laissez le bon temps rouler).

Edit: Speaking of LSD, I finished discs 1 and 2, 3 later. Still one of my favorite 69 releases behind FW and Fillmore Auditorium. I agree with the Good Ole GD.. disc one probably delivers the goods and is the highlight, but my favorite is disc 2 simply because He Was a Friend of Mine > The Eleven speaks to me... As for disc three, I have never met a Morning Dew or an Alligator I did not like. Even the squatty little yeller one with no tail.

5-23/24/69 Pow Wow RT 4.1(?)

I actually was awarded this for a prize back in 2010 for the inaugural version of 30 Days of Dead. It was on the 5th day and the song was Playing in the Band from 5/20/73 UCSB. As I recall it was a totally random guess! Funny the things we remember (and what we forget!)

Had a good time listening to 5/23 & 24/69 today.

The opening Lovelight almost seems to be a prankster response to the rookie mc telling people to be seated... never trust a prankster.

All the banter is fun. The difference between the closing Lovelight & opening Lovelight was interesting as well.
The opening Lovelight seemed to be much more exploratory with different themes being introduced, especially around 14:30, Jerry gets into a cool groove. The Drums > St. Stephen transition was a trip too.

Good stuff all around.

Oh,.. the pressure. I am not good at this. But since we are on the best sounding of the road trips. I would humbly suggest either the WOS road trips (6/18/74) or the 5/15/70 Road Trips.

If I had my way.. I would pick Louisville 74 in honor of the eminent release (Road Trips Vol 2 No 4). One other ask.. on or about the first received date of the next Dave's Picks. Would it be possible / make sense to hold this show open for a week so both the folks that get it first have time to comment and the folks that get a day (or six) later have time to participate? Seems reasonable to me. So a week and day of 1974?

How funny i was grilling last night and I listened to half of the first CD!! Now i have a reason to listen to the rest.. bob t

orange sunshine

there was orange sunshine in the 90's? I only remember it back in the 60's and early 70's and it was the bomb, 4 way hits, which meant you only needed to take a quarter of a hit and they were kinda small, so it was quite easy to take a bit too much. :o fun times indeed. Did some yellow sunshine back then too, it was suppose to be 8 way, never did more than a crumb of that stuff, talk about mind blown. They don't make it like that anymore.
Mexican quaaludes, mandrax I think they were called, not the same as 714's but still lots of fun, they had an antihistamine in the mix to help keep you awake the first 30 mins or so, then it was all fun and stumbling and falling and laughing and feeling invincible, sure wish they hadn't outlawed that drug, one on my favorites. Ever try ludes and acid together? wow, what an experience that was, add some black nepalese hash on top and you are now in heaven. Back in those days, it was ok to have a trove of drugs, like Hunter Thompson said in fear and loathing:
"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers...and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can." and push it we did.

Many happy Road Trips over the years. Just finishing 5/23/69 lovelight . Amazing all the changes from live-dead era into Workingman’s era , nothing short of phenomenal creative drive.
There were a few lackluster Dead shows in the 70s ,but I never went to one back then that was less than amazing.
Would like to see a board tape of UCSB May 74 with Great American String Band set official release. Maria was real hot also. 74 was a banner year.
Seminole Powwow kicked ass. Dark Star was super improvisational . The 11 was exciting . Love-Light was also reflective of the youthful vigor of the band at that time.
Miss Indian World ,Cheyenne Kippenberger 2019-2021, is from the Hollywood , Florida Band of Seminole Tribe. Met her in Albuquerque during Gathering of Nations Powwow a year ago. She’s a real good person from one of the strongest of all the tribes in the country.
I still nominate 5/2/70 for this Saturday on its 50th anniversary .

I suggested the 2nd ever show you saw. I thought this show had some unique Jerry playing on it especially for the time period. If we don't get to listen to it I'll understand but, maybe you can give your take on it I thought it was good for the time.

My Completist OCD has prevented me from frequent listening of this & from Egypt with Love.
It might be cool to hear them both again in their compilation order... already struggling with the whole notion of rearranged songs.. Deep Breath.. they sound good.

Talking about Orange Sunshine, Mexican Quaaludes, Ludes & Acid, HST gave me a nice Contact Buzz!

Had to cue this one up on archive too, (and will tomorrow's "From Egypt" pick.) I really don't know why I slept on these Road Trip releases - I guess I was put off by the cut-up nature. Oh well - LMA is a-ok with me :) Just now on "Roses."

I had to run out for my weekly grocery trip yesterday, and Sirius was playing "To Lay Me Down" from Jai-Alai - sounded very good, though I am not sure if it was the soon to be delivered version or not.

I know that many here already know this, but if not, the Freedom Hall show "Eyes" is the version that Holly Bowling does on solo piano. She apparently transcribed the whole jam. I have never directly compared them note for note, but her version is really great!

EDIT: She actually does her own "version" of the verses, but the jam is transcribed. On "BTW" and it looks like the WoS has settled in and is sounding better - still some vocal drops, but the band sounds incredible!
