    I've never managed to snare any of the Dave's Picks and with inflation and ultra weak Yen the way it is, I'm less and less likely to have anything physical imported from halfway around the world.

    I'm more than happy to have a dig through the Archive now that I've got a little time on my hands, but the closest I can come in 1980 with something in my actual collection is the Alaska Summer Solstice gig, which I listen to pretty regularly. Scratch that, I just discovered a 10/19/80 Stankiewicz data set that I've never unpacked.

    I have 9/2/80 favorited for some reason, but I don't think I've actually listened to it. I mean, I've listend to Reckoning to death, but, perhaps, consequently have not sought out many of the shows from that run. Digging in to Europe 72 may change my mind on that matter.

    I think this show is super well-known, but I'm a big fan of the 8/4/74... sorry, 8/6 Roosevelt Stadium gig. I have had a partial board on cassette from some sort of trade back in the day, but I think the Neil Merin audience reel is the way to go with a big outdoor Wall of Sound gig like that. Some of the conversations are pretty hilarious, but it also does a good job of showing how well the WoS cut through with clarity. Shnid 5914 fwiw... sbefail, but who's burning CDs?!

    Thank you for that! That IS weird. They really were on the edge of adhesion, and quite frequently breaking free. The violin and sax timbres and harmonies really add something unusual, and completely foreign to the Dead's sound, but are amazingly on. They may be more on than Mickey! lol. The rhythm section really seems to come close to falling apart on a number of occasions when it's not "supposed" to be space or drums. It sounds like they're struggling to come to terms with the return to more trad material, having not yet figured out how to leave the all-out-madness approach of the progressive repertoire out of those numbers yet. Jerry croons on as if nothing is happening. lol. Fascinating listen, and one I hope to revisit soon. I just noticed that I have it on an old HD from my torrenting days, so that's gonna hafta get Metadata ID'ed up and on the ipod soon so I can get into it in the car. The Dead are the only thing that make a brutal commute "Bear"-able. As you say, brilliantly odd performance.

    Oroborous > By chance, I've been listening to a lot of that Rotterdam '72 show lately too. Mega Dark Star, and just all around good stuff. Not sure why someone thought that the drum solo needed to be separated from Dark Star, though, and Dark Star split into two tracks. It sounds like Phil wants to play Bird Song toward the end, but gets denied. Then it seems like he's the one who first hints at Caution, and this time everyone agrees. Great stuff. There seem to be lots of teasing going on in various jams.

    The 50th anniversary of Europe '72 has had me digging deeper into the Euro 72 tour. I've got One More Saturday Night on the brain! For some reason the Dusseldorf 4/24/72 rendition got me more excited than usual. Really tight, high energy, without going Hy Hy Hyyyy Hysterical.

    I guess you guys mostly stream the SBDs, but does anyone who DLs AUDs have any recomendations for an ID Tag/Metadata editor?

    Pick Of The Day: Family Dog At The Great Highway, August 3 1969

    Do I hear a violin? A saxophone? I think what I hear is loosely organized pandemonium……………or magic…………

    If you’re a fan of deadweirdnesses, as I am, this one might be for you. The Hard To Handle opener doesn’t quite gel. On High Heeled Sneakers the band & guests channel their twisted stoner inner garage band. High Time and Mama Tried sound quasi-embyronic. The Dark Star is stand-alone, saxy, tasty, and for the time, not bad at all. What follows is a short Alligator, percussive interlude, a propulsive, saxy, violinesque Other One, and a very decent Caution (which gets very weird about half way through). The festivities are gently concluded with And We Bid You Goodnight……

    Musically, for the Grateful Dead the Summer of 1969 was uneven, to say the least. Highs, lows, and everything in between. Miller’s remaster is actually pretty listenable. Dare to indulge!

    Every weird thing about you is beautiful and makes life interesting.

    NOD is a happy show.

    PITB -> UJB...check out 5/21/82.

    92: I had cassettes of 2/24/92 which has a good setlist, but the cassettes are elsewhere now. C'est la vie.

    6/20/92 has the great Space into CASEY JONES (HOOONK HOOONK!!!)

    which they follow up with...Throwin' Stones. sigh.

    6/28/92 is pretty good, as I recall from the cassettes.

    Someday I'll mine the 92 seam of GD

    I enjoyed this show and was surprised how much. I probably need to listen to more 92. Sound quality of the recording is A+ to my ears. Cold Rain and Snow, Wang Dang Doodle, FOTD and Maggie's Farm were highlights of the first set. Enjoyed the second set Corrina, Crazy Fingers Playing, UJB. Vince with Baba O'Reilly.

    Still no #43 for me, however I received a shipping notice last night from this site.

    I always liked this release, and so you pulled me down the rabbit hole before I finished 11/7/69. First world problems.

    Funny.. to me, there's two separate Playin' > UJB > Whatever Sammy's , pre-hiatus and post-hiatus. Like fraternal twins, I do not love one more than the other, there are similarities but are very different and wonderful in their own way. The pre-hiatus shows have the trippier, unpredictable on the edge of magic drive and the post hiatus often have a harder driving, freight train powerhouse feel.

    This one starts with the famous Dark Star and weaves the entire second set into a PITB>UJB Sandwich. It is a little tighter and faster than many with some innovative midi. A really fun second set plus a tight first set (exception maybe Half Step?).

    Anyway, I remember that laser disc effort So Far where they attempted UJB>PITB>Terrapin. They went for it and to me they just never got the spicy mustard, more of a warm mayo that was left out in the sun too long.. It was recorded in I think late '85 and they just were not on the same page. There are a bunch in 89 that achieved liftoff, this one is interesting. I was reading the reviews on the Archive and one poster commented they were "a band on a mission" that night. It might not be the best of the year, but I always thought was a solid effort.

    Coincidentally, I grabbed a random waterproof ipod off the shelf for a day on the river this morning and hit play in the warmup rapids.. I never know what's on these devices, they have no screen so it's a great mystery. It picked up about halfway through the Morning Dew from 10/12/84 Augusta. After the song ended, I rewound and started the sequence over beginning with Don't Need Love>False Start PITB>Let's do UJB Instead>Drums>Space>PITB>UJB Reprise>Morning Dew. This one had the Spicy Mustard.

    10/16/89: I’ve always thought this was one of the best releases they put out but it seems to get no love?
    Whatevs, to each the ur own. I love the song list, the audio, and the playing, all top shelf!
    When o when will we get more fall 89 multitrack goodness?

    6/20/92: another nice 92 surprise! Still think 6/8 and 6/22 are the ones to beat, but this tour is perhaps underrated!
    Check it out, it’s a fun show. Sorry to plow ahead, just trying to get my fix in where/when I can since little to no tunes at work currently : (

    92, you say, okay, I will give it a go later. Just finishing 10/16/89. Haven't listened to this show in a while. Still delivers and a great release from something like 20 years ago. Need to listen to this one more often.

What a release Jim, thanks for this pick. I am with Daverock on this one, might be one of the best releases.

I shied away from this one forever, because it was not a complete show. What a huge mistake that was.

Sound quality is A++. If Dave's 34 sounds anything like this we are in for a huge treat.

The China Rider is awesome. Two unreal Eyes. Yes, That Loose Lucy is really good. How about that Morning Dew. WRS, Truckin! All top notch stuff.
To the great soul that turned me on to this release, this one is for you!

Tommorow, we hit up FourWinds pick, From Egypt with Love!

On the waterproof shuffle, WOS Road Trips. Both shows are excellent as is the sound. 6/16 highlights for me are China>Rider (powerful), Race is On (one of the better versions, sometimes in these electric versions the vocals are all over the place.. this one is a ok), a monster Eyes (more on this later) and nice Big River and a monster PITB.

Excellent

But 6/18 delivers the goods. One of the all-time Eyes>China Dolls. The performance and transition flawless, poweful and seamless. A jazz masterpiece. I think the version on the GD Movie (10/19?) is more popular and certainly sounds better.. but on the movie soundtrack, they cut and edited out one of the jams. I think the transition from 6/18 is better, and it's my favorite. Not a wasted note or chord, everything on purpose and just exactly right. but I am biased. A high water mark.

WRSuite, TOO, I Know It's a Sin, Stella Blue, and perhaps the best Morning Dew of the period rounds out the release. There is a bit of mayhem but it works.. just be patient. I have gotten used to the I know it's a Sin jam and when I listen to it.. I fill in the words. Powerful stuff. A potent part of the set.

Too bad it's a chop job, but it's a great release.. also, to my ears, this was the show where Jeffrey Norman went from Jeffrey the Grey to Jeffrey the White. This was about the period when he really stepped up his game to wizard status. This sounds (to me) head and antlers above the best copies on the archive. Working directly from the Master Reels and by this point in his career having acquired quite the bag of tricks makes a big difference.

That's all I have. Also.. I was remiss last night asking for more time for the new 74 release. There is a whole other place for that on the Dave's Picks thread. We should keep this the way it is. I like the idea of 5/2/70 on it's birthday and I hope someone brings up the 5/15/70 road trips as well.

Edit: Thank goodness they deemed whitewater kayaking as an acceptable social distance sport.. but the shuttles in the truck are a bit taboo.. but not if you bike the shuttle, which just gives you a little extra alone time to grove to the GD.

On it for Saturday. Good idea Strider, Jim and Vguy.

Vguy, interesting you bring up "If I had the world to give", I used to sing this song to my daughter when she was really young.

Okay, never thought I would post that but you brought it up.

Bob T, I didn't make it to this show, I went to the shows on Oct 20 and 21. My brotther told me about this incident with the girl and the banjo lessons. Garcia used to give banjo lessons when he worked at Swain's House of Music down in Palo Alto, my brother knows a couple of guys who took banjo lessons from Garcia back in the early 60s.

I don't teach anymore..

WOS Rocked me yesterday, both 6/16 & 6/18 were so great to hear again.
I am fully pumped now for the Jai-Alai Fronton Release.

Waited until later in the day, to get the full effect, and it was wonderful.

The Eyes > China Doll & WRS > TOO > It's A Sin > Stella is such an incredible trip to take.

And having read your posts I knew what was coming all day, and the magic part, even with that and having heard the show many times in the past, I couldn't wait and was excited when they broke into Morning Dew and it is EPIC, better than I'd remembered.

And that's what this trip is all about!!

I too opted for the full 10/21/78 show - on "Roses" now, and I have enjoyed this show so far, save for Bobby's slide playing during "Sugaree" and "Stagger Lee." My copy of this show (the Miller one that Vguy posted,) sounds pretty darn good.

I know that 5/2/70 DiP 8 is on tap for it's 50th anniversary Saturday, but what about tomorrow? May I suggest DiP 5 - 12/26/79, one of my personal favorite picks, for Friday's listen?

Of course, I think a number of folks should be receiving DaP34 tomorrow... but if not...

I have the complete shows on a HD but they aren’t loaded on the microSDXC card that is currently in my music player.
So, chop job it was.
Yes, definitely time for the whole run to be Plangentized, Normanized, and packed up in a nice little Box that fits on a shelf.

I didn’t initially go for RT because I wanted complete shows, not chop jobs. Probably the wrong choice because I missed out on the bonus disc which I believe allows you to reassemble a complete 10-21 set2.
But, all that can be remedied with the release of a Winterland Oct. 78 Box. Bring it on Dave.

Now I’ve ventured into torrent territory and am listening to 3-25-83 148801.Clugston.
Sound quality is not terrible, but the cymbals are a bit too loud.

Definitely a different feel than our listen yesterday with the wonderful RT2.3.

Sound quality is mediocre at best and I agree the patches are rough.

Does anyone have a tracking arrival date for tomorrow for Dave's #34.

Mine still is saying label created.

Agreed! Not the same high as yesterdays '74 trip.. But The Other One is ripping and has a moment of IT for sure.

Actually having listened again, I'm surprised that this got released with the number of patches that were required. I'm not holding my breath on a rerelease.. there's so much other stuff in that there Vault.

Fun to revisit.

I might have to dig in to some 5/1/70 for it's 50th as well.

I did start ordering when full shows started coming and I got those bonus discs.

I also didn’t order Rockin’ The Rhein, and missed out on that bonus disc. Still don’t know why I didn’t order it.

....just wrapped up. 6.8 goonie birds out of 10. Mojo working goes on a little too long, but everything after that was fire. Very nice Must have Been The Roses. Moving onto an anniversary of a show i attended. Irvine Meadows 4.30.89. Box Of Rain, Iko to open the second set.

Luckily we have a new C. M. audience release so there is a better patch for the Stella Blue and some other small patches but, on a bad note the taper only got a partial set 1 so no new patch for Sugaree which sucks.

Bertha, Good Love it's back, MHBTR sweet, Estimated blowing the roof off! He's Gone okay, this show kinda goes up and down. Mojo starts out nice, TOO - Stella - Sugar Mag all good. I got them U.S. Blues.

I think I blew or singed a voice coil in the mid-range speaker yesterday. I got a Emotive xpa-2 amp 70lb monster (all most gave the Fedex guy a hernia). Hard to find speakers that this thing can't blow out. Thinking of going with Airmotiv T2+ loudspeaker anyone familiar with these speakers?

You might just have a better version than the two I have. It seems to be one or two steps closer to the master reel and my best, although it's a soundboard, has just a touch of hiss.

Along with 8/13/75 this made me a dead head... I love this version so much.... I use to listen to it every day in college before I started getting tapes... bob t.... P.S. i am excited to hear Donna tonight!!! bob t

Cool to hear your story re: Wharf Rat & 8/13/75

Definitely have some tunes like that, first Dead album I got was WALSTIB from the ole Columbia Records and Tapes club, 11 Albums for a Penny!

Anything from that album takes me back but in particular Born Cross-Eyed and that Europe '72 Jack Straw.

Despite heavy rotation in bootleg circles, never heard 8/13/75 until the Dead released One From The Vault.
But I was stoked when I did get it.

And I totally forgot about Donna tonight! She's a kick, thanks for the flash:)

How's 12/26/79 going everyone? I had to get some 50 year old 5/1/70 in my ear hole.
