Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. Got a kick out of all of them there stories. Made me Laugh out loud picturing it.
    Thanks man!

The Saint Of Circumstance out of Space on 5/17/81 caught me off guard, I had to go back and make sure there wasn't a song missing. This is a great show, and further confirms my May '81 being killer theory.
Super cool you were there for this one. It's a total keeper.

Now I wanna hear that March 13 show again.. Damn I'm getting behind.

Just realized it's the 30th Anniversary of my only 1990 show.

    Goddamn, I declare!

LOL, when I opened my device first thing I saw was “7 inches in October” and I thought somehow I went to the wrong site! Yeah, too early for all that!

PARK CITY: nice show, only heard on iPad but good for working.

12/5/81: cool, always wanted to check out this whole show. I know the 1st rocks so it will be good for working. JG was obviously diggin’ BRRB in those days. Believe that 5/17 one really rips...

SPELLING: you can call me anything, just not late for supper....but OB is fine, or Senator in a formal setting 😉

C.C. RIDER: long time so my memory etc, but I seem to recall the dbl time shift was a thing for a while, but it almost sounds like they all weren’t ready for it here? research project for GOGD....when was the first and for how long etc

5/17: I told ya that one just rips! I was just starting to move outta the local circle cause there weren’t enough shows and I was old enough that the rents weren’t gonna try and stop me. I didn’t have a car yet so I decided to take the bus after doing so for Utica in March. So off I go to Syracuse and see if I could score a ticket and go. Remember it was a Beautiful Spring day, not necessarily the norm in upstate. So I get there and it’s the usual scene in those days, very laid back, no shakedowns yet per say. Just a small number of friendly freaks lounging round the ole Aud. Awesome day but nobody had tix....somehow I find out that they’ll sell whatever few remaining from promos, promoter etc. so I manage to get a good spot in line and end up with a ticket!
Not sure where it was located cause I went right for the floor and low and behold just as security is about to come question me, I see an empty seat third row, Garcia side about five people in, boom I slide in and start asking if anyone’s sitting there etc and acting like this is where I belong etc and security backed right off. As I said, things were often pretty loose in those days. So the show soon starts and straight away it’s apparent that JG is ready and ripping.
Now they were still using the big Clare Brothers PA boxes and for whatever reason they didn’t hang them so they were on the ground and thus me being being more to the side they were almost right in front of me. So being that close it was ridiculously loud and believe me in those days I knew loud and this was probably the loudest Dead show I saw. To add to it, JG was trying out the new at the time McIntosh MC 2500 power amp instead of the usual MC 2300. Probably grabbed a few from MAC in nearby Bingo town? So the combination of these factors with JG just ripping was awesome, but I had my first collage final exam the next day and my ears were ringing so bad I couldn’t hear a word the prof said lol. Later, when I got the show on tape it reinforced what a hot show this was and it’s always been my favorite 81 show.

9/26 I don’t recall as much. It was a posse of us up in the side seats about halfway back which was kinda of a weird bummer for me as up until that show I’d always been up front with like 10th row at 11/9/79 being the farthest back I’d been. So up in the seats in a more social setting I’d sorta taken this one for granted. Remember On the Road again, but not too much else music wise? Finally heard it in just the last few years since my cousin said Dave kept playing it etc, so checked it out and it’s another good show, though I still like 5/17 better.
3/13/81: This was the first time I took the bus and went to a show myself. Nasty cold drizzly upstate late winter day. Friday the 13th to boot!
Ran into my peeps from one of the bands I roadied for and though I had hardly any money they talk me into going for dinner since it was so shitty out. So I spend a bunch of money and eat too much, and then grab a bottle of Seagrams as 7/7 was the R&R drink of choice then, at least in the other main band I crewed for. Now I had a pretty good tolerance in those days, but was too green to know that most Deadheads don’t really drink like that, at least not before shows. So I’m stuck in line for hours basically drinking most of it myself, which would of probably been ok except for all the joints....
So the gate opens, which is at the other end from the stage and we run in and not through the normal entrance but run down this isle and try to jump the boards but being toasty, trip and fall several feet to the floor lol. Luckily bumbles bounce so I’m up and running and end up in front of JG. As I say all would of probably been good except now you have the often long wait for the show to start so we sit and start smoking non stop joints. Well like Fat Freddy says getting drunk and then getting high is like pissing in the wind! So of course the whole building starts spinning etc but there’s no way in hell im giving up my spot on the rail. Dumb yute that I was I probably could’ve gone to the rest room and they would of held my spot, but instead I end up standing, more like slumping on the fence and sorta pass out, until, ooopppsss, barfed over the rail onto that little area between the fence and the stage where photogs and security etc would hang. Well some of the folks next to me got uptight even though I followed the number one rule of parting: no shootin’ without a cooler....meaning if you have to, just make sure it’s in a appropriate place. Not on or near people, or in the car or whatnot. So that’s what I did, it wasn’t pretty, but no one got violated. The security guys were grumbling a little but they put some cardboard down and eventually everyone chilled out. So now I’m basically sleeping standing up with the fence holding me up. But the dudes next to me kept trying to get Security to remove me, which wasn’t going to happen lol. Funny thing they were all trippin and got too high and during the second set a couple of them had to be pulled over the fence and carried out. Ha! Rookies! Lol.
So I distinctly remember feeling/sensing, since I was out, the lights going down and of course then the big roar and just as i open my eyes JG comes round the corner of his gear and we lock eyes for a moment and he didn’t look much better than me, or so I thought? He had on a blue or black long sleeve work short with a big burn in the. pocket like he put a half lit J or something in there! Anyway, I used to think this show sucked but after finally hearing it, again because I heard Dave had been playing it, it was yet another nice surprise. So there ya go, those are my 81 stories, and a testimony to how awesome it is to be able to hear these shows all these years later.

Funny how often times BITD we'd have one Set or the other of a show and never have heard the other Set. (ie Had Set 2 of that show for years! I used to love the Set 1 Tape of that Show!)
Now, so much has changed in that regard. Makes me smile thinking about that.

BlueCrow finally got to check out Set 1? I really like that Set 1, it's got a real '87 GD feel to it and they sound pumped to be playing and like they're having fun.
(PS was just joshing about digging out the Vault, no need with the Archive, I don't even have a quality tape deck anymore, haven't for years)

And A Ho 1981! Keep those show stories coming. You all got me hankering to hear 12/5/81 and maybe revisit all of March '81 :)

12/5 is looking appealing today and it's been awhile S1 closes with Cumberland > El Paso, Ramble On, Passenger, Bird Song > Let It Grow! And that's after 4 songs already! Man.. what a band.
And yeah, the aforementioned BRRB in Set 2 along with Shakedown, PITB > D> S> Wheel> PITB sandwich.

I think it's calling us you all.
1981 spirit is in the air, I been saying it.
    What's it gonna be?

    PS - OB 5/17/81 is a SMOKER!
Ironically, I was looking it over after your mention, and noticed I only had Set 2 :)
No Set 1 SBD, but a fairly new Jim Wise Audience recording Clugston Transfer from 2018 that sounds really good.
Jerry just starts shredding at the end of Promised Land.
And this my friends is why I like it here!

The whole show is just a gem. So, I remember the first time I heard this show from the official release from 2007 and thought Wow, unreal. Too many highlights. Probably my favorite Round and Round, yes the faster Eyes, Good Lovin, Samson, Scarlet. This show was mixed by Norman but not mastered. Plangent, yes. Interesting to me. I have given this show to many people as an example of just how good these guys were.

Tomorrow, how about the Cow Palace show from 3/23/74? Dick's 24. First Wall of Sound show. Yes, it is not the full show.

Thanks a bunch folks.

I concur with your take on Spring '90 with one minor tweak and a small addition.

The tweak, ..if you are in the right mood.. that Branford Eyes is effortless and sublime. The add, that Mind Left Body is amazing. In fact second set pre-drums is a spectacularly amazing mindphuck. That second set cooks.

They should have released this as a whole show, what were they thinking???

Where were we, what were we talking about again?

12/31/76, I had a job hanging sheetrock at the time and I was so beat after work I just went home and was in bed by 9pm. I thought about going, you could still get tickets the day of the show, my brother and friends went. 3/23/74, Weir says " no you don't" durring Beat it on down the Line, some guy jumped up on stage and tried to grab Donna. A guy also jumped up on stage and handed Garcia a joint, Garcia took a sniff then took a hit and handed it to someone back stage. Weir said you can really tell who got their tickets over the radio, they were giving free tickets out over the radio. Bolo, were you in the audience that day? I definitely missed some good ones along the way.

We're just messing with you VGuy. If you've seen the Truman Show, well.. I don't want to give away the season finale..

Thanks for being a good sport though. If it helps.. the temperature is going to break tomorrow and you will be in a sailboat by the weekend.

2 days spent at the Cow Palace, sounds like the band liked playing there.

Any Cow Palace stories out there?

Release sounds real good, 10 songs not on release. 4 from Set 1, 4 from Set 2 and double encore.

Missing:
Mexicali, Tennessee Jed, IMHBTR, El Paso, Ship of Fools, Ramble On Rose, MAMU, Around, Casey Jones, OMSN

Comparing the two, release is mighty nice, SBD sounds good, but def noticeable quality difference, in favor of the release, Uh duh.

The final Palindrome. We’ve heard the first & now the last.. might be time for the middle.

This one is heavy, goes far into Playing and then at just the right time spins out a great UJB and then epic Morning Dew (maybe not as good as yesterday’s from 12/31/76 but that’s for you to decide) back into a long and very wonderful UJB jam and lands to dust off the PITB reprise. Loved it

Honorable mention to great late set Bertha!! Jerry is having fun with this one... Lord!

Haven’t been to the 60’s in awhile, ‘68 sounds good to me, what about 3/17/68 Download Series V6? .

Start with set 2 TIFTOO and TOYLL is extra credit (only song that survives from Set 1 they say due to Anthem experiments 🧫)

It’s Friday after all.

This wonderful release, Dick's 24, gave us a glimpse into the greatness of the Wall of Sound recordings in the Vault. Fun to hear the fist live Cassidy.

So interesting to hear them completely restart Playing in the Band, and I am sure glad they did.

68 for tomorrow!

Be well folks.

Hi-Ya, Hi Ya, Hi Ya Kids!!

Let's dig back in those stacks and pull out some Primal Dead for the POTD

Kick it off with the entire Set 2 from 3/17/68 Download Series V6 released in 2005. (Don't believe it circulated prior to this release?)

Follow that up with Turn On Your Lovelight from Set 1 (Track 1) the only surviving track from that set due to Anthem of the Sun experiments.. as the story goes.

Extra credit:
So Many Roads Disc 1 - Track 8 = Dark Star > China Cat Sunflower > The Eleven from 3/16/68

Fun Fact: China Cat would go away for awhile after the March '68 shows and wouldn't come back until April '69

Enjoy and Happy Friday!

May I throw in my suggestion for Road Trips 4.4 - 4/06/82 Philly Spectrum for Saturday? It has been a long time since I've listened, and I need a little ragged-but-right Jerry right now to fit my current mood.

The primal today was fun, but I was so busy, I could only check in a little here and there. Now that night is falling, I might just have to get a little twisted and play it louder than I should.

Peace

OTIS: Do it again, now that you’re right;)

Throw in 6/14/68 Caution from Fillmore Box Bonus Disc & Anthem Of The Sun original mix from 50th Anniversary release and you’ll be stoked.

‘82 sounds good to me!

But, as I don't have the Fillmore Box (though I have the shows,) I will have to archive that bonus disc "Caution".

Just for fun, I did a quick Google Shopping search for the Fillmore box with bonus disc... $1,369.00. I suppose that's fair :) Supposedly, it is still sealed.

In another life, I will make my living by making money for the uber-rich so I myself can become one of the 1%, hopefully hiring others to make me more money in turn. Then, I will drop cash like that on a set of CDs (I know! They ARE worth it!) Also, think I'll buy me a Learjet.

Peace

Edit: Found another one for $1,899.00! That first offer is looking better all the time!

Edit 2: Ok... I need to stop, but a guy on eBay has a sealed 77 Winterland box, with bonus, for $1,599.95 - but it has free shipping. I hope that I'm not pulling any tails, but this is crazy. Who has that kind of coin for Cds? Also, why is the 73 Winterland box so much cheaper? IMO, it's the better of the two Winterland boxes.

Back to only positive vibes (sorry friends, I think I am letting my topsy-turvey stressful week leak on to this wonderfully positive thread...)

Positive/Bad vibes. They WERE good, at least I got a good chuckle when I see those prices. I see the prices for a complete Dick's and I say, thank you, but no thank you. As for who has the coin? Actually for a way to piss money away, it's pretty cheap. Watch those car customizing shows! Some have the money to just piss away, some it maybe the only way they piss it. But can you imagine dropping 2k on a box, then find in a year, you got the rot!!

In the words of Sam the Man -

... listening to 82’ got me thinking about the 80’s Dead, and a favorite year of mine during that era is 1985! A profound time/period in the bands career and musical Style & composition formate for their live performances. I remember readying and seeing how the fans & audience would come to their concert with a lot of energy & grateful vibes radiating oof the crowd & Band , especially 1985! IMO. It was like a ‘religious experience’, it’s really hard to describe in words. Everyone seem to be on the same page and the dead could do no wrong! The band was just firing 100% on all their mystic musical cylinders As a unit & band . I think Bob & Jerry are really great during this year,85’ they both just seem to be on a higher level of cosmic connection with each other. And I also think Brent really added a lot fire to the music. Jerry seemed to really play well and enjoy the inter play between himself & Brent! While weir begins learning how to play slide guitar on the sidelines lol 😆 , just playing around folks! Dicks picks #21 is all this wrapped up & more in this dicks Picks, #21

Ah, this show feels like slippin' into a nice ol' worn-in pair of Birkenstocks. (VGuy, I've been rockin' them since 96 - I always go with the classic style with the backstrap. I even wore a pair of Birks at my wedding - granted, it was on the beach... or did I plan it to be on the beach so I could wear my Birks ;)

@Dennis, IceCream, etc. - yeah, I know those prices are unrealistic, and there are many sillier things to piss your money away on - shit, if I had of saved all of the money I've spent on stupid cigarettes, I could buy the entire GD catalog for eBay prices two or three times over.

@DeadVikes, you're a good man, Charlie Brown! I will holler if anything particular jumps out at me.

CRS>Promised Land - Hell of a nice way to open a show!

The Shakedown Stream was delightful last night! Bobby and his mirror shades! Sad to think that only 10 days later, the world lost Brent. He was a true treasure.

Peace

It’s kinda ironic, I started feeling positive this week about things maybe turning a corner in my immediate surroundings, which I hadn’t been feeling prior. Had a pretty good week, and great Thursday & Friday and was feeling a bit more up than previously. And then I watched the news.. one of the worst weeks in the History of America.

A bright spot for me throughout has been hanging out with you all and listening to some good jams and talking about this band we all love. So thanks for that You ALL!

One Way or Another, This Darkness Has Got To Give.

DEADVIKES - Hope you get to enjoy some good jams today! My heart goes out to you, your city and our nation, we will survive.. I hope!

VGUY - Nice Birks! Shakedown Stream was sweet, watching Brent was sometimes bittersweet. RIP Brentski, them was some good times!

OTIS - Dead Heads are a resourceful lot and you got friends. Whoever is going that other route might have more money than sense. Just saying..

LMG - 1985 RULES!! Always been especially fascinated with that year, and it’s the year the bus came by and I got on. I’m down for 11/1/85 DiP V21! Maybe tomorrow?

And now.. it’s time to set the WABAC for Philly April ’82.

CR&S > Promised opener anyone? (Right There with you OTIS!) Wo-Ho!!!

...hello ‘good Ol Grateful Dead , sounds grateful tomorrow Dicks Picks #21 “1985 - Richmond, Virginia”could be “the pick of the Day! I’m in if it’s okay 🙏
...I missed the Dicks Picks 24 discussion, I’m a big fan of that dicks Picks. As one mentioned it was the first time for “WOS” and it was beyond primo - it was & still is in short, heavenly ! I look forward to rewind back to 24 , dick pick. Ciao’

Have slacked off listening. Just glad I can participate in this sometimes. Oh Lord these troubled times. And we thought shit was bad 50 years ago. The law may not always be just, but karma is. Please encourage as many people to vote this fall. Because “this darkness has got to give”.

....Dylan should write a song about it. Pisses me off to no end, but you won't see me torching an AutoZone or a Target over it. Floyd's girlfriend said that he would have been appalled about the reaction and violence over this. He seemed like a cool dude. Those cops? Not so much.
Sorry Deadland, but that was fucked up and I vented here. That video is so sad to watch. So sad.

Music heals. And we as a people and a nation need all the healing we can get. We learned so much at Grateful Dead concerts about tolerance and acceptance of others and being kind. Keep that spirit strong. We did not go through these experiences for nothing.

Thanks Man. Squeezed in a little Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack bonus tracks early this morning. Been on a 74 bender for this week. Still one of favorite Uncle John's Band.

Yes, this is messed up. So much destruction. Today, they hijacked two ups trucks. Funny, no one here is talking about Covid anymore.

Be well folks!

....or confrontation at a Dead show. Saw a lot of pretty girls though. Saw someone pass a baggie of mushrooms to someone twelve people down, dude ate cap or two, then passed it back. No one in between snuck a snack. Seems like a different age.
I wasn't at Deer Creek '95. Just saying.
Can I go back to 1989 now?

Heavy times for sure...

My phone just blew up with an Alert System warning, I guess we're on curfew tonight and there's some serious rioting going on. (I wasn't going anywhere, there's also a plague, so yeah.. staying home.)

DEADVIKES: Maybe the Portland people were feeling our Solidarity and had to ramp it up?
I jest, it's craziness.. and '74 is a good place to be.

VGUY: It's '82 today not '89 ;)

As The Replacements would say "Anywhere is better than here."

I'm gonna hunker down and venture onward into 1982.. 4/14/82 to be exact. Love some PITB from '82.

I'll leave you with the following lyrics:

Crumbling ground
Tumbling down
Run to the sound
Of a fire in the city

Stay Safe Everybody and Keep Positive!

Wow, been outside on the patio doing absolutely nothing but 4/5&6/82 and hunting vermin, while the 1 year old Husky Siblings next door rollick and romp. Huge snow capped peaks down valley with low grumpy storm clouds not doing much but grumblin’...but seems like this situation has gotten fluid...
If you get confused indeed! .....think I’m going to hit the tube again, crack an ice cold Sip O Sunshine, and go back out where those chilly winds don’t blow. I’m sure the wonderful world will be there waiting for us on the news Monday. But tomorrow never knows...so scuse me while I eat this fly.

4/5 & 4/6/82 = good stuff!
I might just like the killer filler the best. But I enjoyed It all.
Great Pick!

Made me fire up 4/14/82 which cooks!! Play it

Between 4/1-4/21/82 Jerry played 16 shows, including:
1st solo show since the ‘60s
1st appearance on Letterman
1st duo show w John Kahn

He’s the man!

OB: sittin’ on the porch doin’ nothin’, good call!
Inspiration..

Really enjoyed that today, no time for a review, just really dug most of this one. Picked it up at Real Gone a year or so ago and have always enjoyed it. Same with that DL vol 6 yesterday. Nice cryptical, Potato, Caution etc, but again, no time, “I got, got, got no time”...85 manana...

Nice pick. I can't believe I've had this for 9 years and only ever listened to the electric Deep Elem. This is a great show. I even like the Terrapin, which I usually skip over. The 4/5 Playin filler is nice, with Bob's guitar loud and clear for a change. Sound is a little squirrely, but you get used to it.

Almost forgot...great Shakedown stream last night. Never saw that one before. Based only on being there I used to think that the 90 show should have been the trucking up to buffalo release, and though it’s a good show, that 7/4/89 has really grown on me over the years, it’s funny, I knew it was a great show when I was there, but I didn’t realize how awesome it was until later. Now that I’ve seen the 90 video, Im sure I like 89 better, but I still think it’s agood show.
It takes a while to get rolling, and at first as is often could be the case, the sound sucked, but by the end of first everything was hitting on all cylinders! Great time at this show. Hanging with that 21 yr old I’ve mentioned before, along with our old pal Lee Esdee. After many years, hadn’t run into him until Shoreline that year. Good Times!
