Truckin' opener in 1972.. it's gonna be a fun day.

Had a good time checkin' out the mentions yesterday. Seattle '95 was sounding good. The Estimated from 5/24 is way cool, and was enjoying 5/26 made it to Drums before crashing. But I was digging it. Also had to play the mentioned 12/15/86 Touch of Grey, definitely worth seeking out the Audience version. Strider & BTK in attendance. I bet that room was electric! I remember hearing about that show through the grape vine before we made it to Hampton in '87. Same thing happening there, but East Coast style, a HUGE response to Jerry surviving. It was and is some of my favorite moments ever spent on this here planet.

    Good times!

Alright, Have A Great Day Everyone.

And Bob T, what color shirt you wearing so we can pick you out in the crowd?

GOGD - if you haven't checked out that link its sourced from KPFA Dead marathon so its a sweet-as-can-be sounding SBD - the only board source for any of that show maybe.

The soundchecks from Seattle are crazy - along with Tough Mama, I seem to think Whisky in the Jar also!! I never got to see them perform Rain, which they also checked. Missed the 1st night in Eugene '94 where they opened Set II with Rain as it freaking poured down - probably THE night from that years run even with the monster Set II show 3..

If you want some excellent 1994 (no jokes please) try both of the Seattle shows 6/13 & 6/14. 6/13 Set II opens with a huge Scarlet >Fire and closes with a phenomenal Morning Dew. I remember thinking second night during That Would Be Something that Hunter had written a song that Jerry could remember no matter what was going on. And no, I didn't know at the time it was a McCartney song, and yes, I loved it - "That would be something, really would be something, to meet you in the pouring rain, meet you in the pouring rain." A gorgeous clear night I think but the lyrics so very Seattle.

BobT - thanks for pinging us from the myth times - I'll get back to my regularly scheduled 1972 programming after this latter era Dead detour. For goodness sake they got to release Stanley Theatre 9/28 one of these freaking days. And oh yeah 9/28/72 should be Pick Of The Day tomorrow. So be it by the power invested in me. He's Gone > Other One > Bobby McGee > Other One > Wharf Rat is one of the great mind blown journeys of that year. And funny thing, I remember listening to my Set II SBD cassette of that very show as I drove up and parked up on a hill in some quiet backwaters neighborhood for one of those Seattle shows either '94 or '95. Really.

Saw the Dead on 4/22/86, they opened with Box of Rain, 2nd song was Visions of Johanna. I went up to my seat , it was in the last row, there was a lady with a handful of tickets, she gave me one and I ended up in tow #3. 12/15/86 was a killer show, Garcia's first show back, it was my birthday. The Dead opened up with Toush of Grey and when Garcia sang I will survive, that place felt like it was gonna blow, very emotional moment, Its a great show start to finish.

Greetings from Virtual September 72 tour

Well today has me listening to the Dick's Picks release from 9/27/72 Stanley theatre. Couple of observations from last few shows. I saw some favorite Dylan song posts from yesterday. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue , was played only 2 times in 72 once In Waterbury and the 9/26/72 Stanley show after not being played since 70, and then disappears again until "See you next month at the Cow Palace I hope" 1974 and then really goes away until 1981!!! I love these 3 versions.. Can only wonder why they weren't part of the rotation.. Also enjoy the Tomorrow is Forever's that pop up in the fall of 72!!! Everyone knows about the awesome Dark Stars, Playings, Other Ones, Bird Songs... etc..

One interesting point, on 9/26/72 there is a first set He's Gone, where Bob starts out totally playing Bird Song while everyone is playing He's Gone.... Not a tease either in the beginning... 3 more shows after today, and I will be done with September 72 tour, (counting 10/2/72 Springfield)... bob t

    Dig the stories.

1986 - Shows you what a state we're in that '86 seems like the good ole days. But man, they do!
We are on the same trajectory on our Dead show paths DV, I saw my first show 4 days after you saw yours at the ripe old age of 16. Good times ensued and a lifetime of adventure began.

Not sure where I found that Dylan & TP set, but lmk if you have trouble locating it. It's worth a listen or two. I've been enjoying it since I found it earlier this month. Tom Petty definitely brings it and Dylan seems interested. The back up singers are wonderful too. I posted about this randomly on 9/3 after I got it. But based on what I was hearing the GD kinda got upstaged that day.

FWIW the sound at Akron Rubber Bowl a few days later sucked as well, and you can hear it on the audience tapes, the vocals get muddy in the mix due to too much reverb or something. But I enjoy those opening sets with Dylan & TP, man he was good in concert. I love his take on So You Want To Be A Rock N' Roll Star.

And boy do I remember the feeling of thinking Jerry's not doing well so I gotta go see these guys and then a few days after my second show he was in that coma and nearly died. We were all so lucky and excited when he pulled through and got to continue some more good times!

Speaking of Death. I'm sure it's been discussed, but the odd coincidence that Jerry broke out Visions of Johanna in '86 shortly before he went into a coma and nearly died, and then didn't play it again with the band until '95 shortly before he died seems striking. Weird GD stuff going on there. Insert Twilight Zone theme by GD circa 1985.

So all this talk of '86 & '95 got me listening to 3/19/86 today. Now I know '86 has a bad reputation. And rightly so in some cases, but listen to this show. The China Cat > Rider absolutely smokes and you can hear that Hampton roar and energy. If it doesn't give you a smile, well I can't help you. Set 1 SBD is out there, and this Set 2 Audience is a nice recording:
    https://archive.org/details/gd1986-03-19.senn.441.me80.buyers.118517.fl…

And for '95, Bluecrow & ConeKid I checked out 7/8/95 Space > TOO > Visions > OMSN and US Blues yesterday while riding to the library. Dug it, the Space starts out really cool with some far out panning. And the reading of Visions is... well I'm not sure I have the words, but heartfelt, aching, bittersweet and wonderful would all apply.

Seattle '95 - I've got that run, have you listened to the Soundcheck dated 5/24/95? Jerry "...it sounds nice up here in Seattle" :)
Somebody was talking about this yesterday, but based on the Tapes we have, the Vault closed down quite a bit with Healy's departure. So a lot of the '95 SBDs never saw the light of day. I have my suspicions, most of them never will.
Happy to be wrong. But... not a lot of progress on that front in the last 25 years.
I'll try and get that SBD portion in and 5/26 is grabbing my eye. Personally I like '94-'95 just because I've only heard most of it once and a lot of that was in a fever dream of collecting it.

So much great music to hear, one life time.

We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

    Thanks for sharing You All!
Keeping me entertained and I appreciate it.

No stories to tell, I didn’t even remember the set list except that I got a Visions. Looked up the set list, and it looks decent on paper.....
I have the recording, which I haven’t listened to in quite a while, probably because the overall show was weak.

On 7-9 my friend and I had the feeling that it was going to be the last show until 96, when a hopefully recovered and rejuvenated Jerry would return. But then fall tour mail order was announced, and it didn’t look like Jerry was going to get to take a break and rest for a while.....

“To Lay Me Down”, reflective song, conjures autumn. Powerful lyrics. The tone of Jerry’s acoustic guitar is so sweet. Interesting that 1970 and 1980 were the banner years for acoustic Dead. About the only years. Of course I was lucky to see several 1970 Dead shows with acoustic sets. I missed 1980 altogether. The few December 1981 Dead shows I saw with acoustic sets backing Joan Baez may or may not count. Last night while listening to the Warfield set I thought about where I was 40 years ago caretaking a ranch just south of Glacier National Park, living in an old homesteaders cabin. Living the dream. “All lost in dreaming”. “Cowboys Dream”. By Lon Megargee 1936.
Question? Where have many of the participants on these boards gone? Most notably the women. AnnaRx, Gypsy Cowgirl, Dina W, even would be great to hear from MaryE again. Would love to see a book from Betty Cantor. I love the book from Rosie McGee. Would love to see a book from Carolyn Adams aka MG.
I also feel a strong desire to pay more attention to Pick of the Week and the Tapers Section. Also Grateful Dead Hour from David Gans is a treasure trove of archives and knowledge.
And a message to any hotshot publishers out there, Ken Babbs is a living national treasure. Out of respect for this “Intrepid Traveler “ who was there, would Penguin or Viking or even City Lights publish the mans book. First hand history, not second or third accounts.
Meanwhile, in the high country, “last leaves are falling”.

I always liked that Spectrum show. It got beat up when released for sound quality, but for the era, it sounds quite good compared to most of the rest. I think it sounds better than the RT 1.1 a mix, but a lot from the Spectrum 79 run.

It's a cool little show and one of my early cassettes. It's got a short and potent TOO into a soulful Morning Dew. In 82, to my ears, Jerry could still deliver those mournful, soul-felt lyrics. On a good night in 82 his voice still sounded fresh. This might be the last year that was true, but I certainly liked the way he sang in the later years too. Visions and She Belongs to Me comes to mind.

Anyhow.. cheerio folks.. have a great night. Play your favorite show like it's 1999.

Edit: I am partial to 4/19/82 and 4/9/83 from that era, but I am biased.

Save the date.... if this existed on soundboard!!!! We all love the Winterland run, but this show just gets ignored due to only audience tape existing!!! So Thursday of this week put this one on... and dare to dream... look at the set list... did it rot in the barn, did no one tape it, we can only dream!!!!!! bob t

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming! I won't comment on the decision to turn the site into a fundraising arm for 24 hours. They own the site and have the right to do it.

So 9/24/76, Dave's 24, was a great way to start my Monday. Different than June 76, yes, for sure. Great show, not long, but perfect for Monday. Love that Playing, Supplication. And yes, that Slipnot is a killer.

Be well folks!

PM me if you need any help DLing :)

I was going to suggest a certain song by N.W.A. but thought my attempt at humor might not be appreciated....and not within the boundaries of our usual decorum....
So I might swing around to 11/1/85 again as I didn’t get a full listen in and haven’t heard in forever....
Pretty soon being the 35 anniversary year of that awesome summer tour, I may dig deep into those....

His birthday today. Saw him in April 1973 in Phoenix, Freddie King opened.
Curtis’ song “(Don’t Worry) If there’s a hell below, We’re all going to go” is a classic. One of the most powerful live concerts I ever went to, that includes the Grateful Dead.
Eldridge Cleaver wrote in his book “Soul On Ice”and addressed the hippies saying that they were the white niggers. A white man with long hair can cut his hair and dress in plain looking clothes and blend back into society. The black man can not change the color of his skin.
I am paraphrasing but I think readers get the point.

I don't know Bob.. there's no SBD.

Just kidding!

Love the hype, looking forward to dusting off my moldy oldie Audience tape of 6/4/77 on it's anniversary.

Gonna go hit up 7/13/85 in the backyard, heard it's name kicked around on one of the other forums.

The other 2/27/77 maybe? They have 1 reel from that show, but I don’t think that reel was in the Vault until the Betty Boards return.

I believe you are correct. 6/4/77.. one of the best shows of the year and one of the worst surviving recordings. Talk about Murphy's Law.

Murphy, turns out he was a real guy. "Named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981." (The Desert Wings March 3, 1978). The phrase was coined at Edwards Air Force Base in 1949.

I like the sound of this 6/4/77 Audience Recording by Rob Bertrando it’s a solid recording. And definitely good by ‘77 standards. Good separation and ambience. Digging it.

Definitely a solid show and way cool set list, almost has a mojo style jam as they head into NFA.

Thanks Rob! If you’re out there, would love to hear some of your stories.

Man can’t imagine what we’d of done without Taper’s. They were such an important part of the Dead music trading phenomenon.

Hats off to Taper’s. You all purchased gear, got tickets, traveled, smuggled, got hassled, went in early just to record the shows. And then shared them with all of us. That’s hardcore. I had a hard time just keeping track of my, ticket, party favors and mind.

So glad you made it!

Nice pick Bob T.. did you have a good anniversary trip?

You're both right.. it's a crisp, great audience recording. my comment was in comparison to the rest of the year, which with a few exceptions was mostly miss Betty, and the exceptions were great recordings as well.

I didn't meant to say it sucked, more that all the other recordings were beyond exceptional.

Carry on.. just rereading shit, sometimes my words six hours later don't always match my intentions.

Hot damn! 6/4/77 is a scorcher! I have never really minded decent AUDs, and like was mentioned, this AUD is really pretty good, especially considering how long ago it was. I think it was "Candyman" in Set 1 that made me really sit-up and pay attention, then, of course, that second set is tough to beat by the standards of any era! Thanks for pointing us in that direction!

9/18/87 for today! This will be another first listen for me!

I agree with DeadVikes - let's keep this thread rolling! I have been finding a lot more solace here than on the DaP34 page, especially as of late. Also, I have always thought that it was way more fun to dig into and discuss a wide variety of shows rather than focusing on one specific era of the band. This is my favorite little corner of the internet, and I hope it doesn't dry-up any time soon.

Happy Friday, DeadLand!

Peace

Worth watching the Letterman appearance just to see how uncomfortable Jerry was with that trick!

Our first Official pick from 1987!

OTIS you’re in for a TREAT my friend.

I’m in and this show boils over.. gives me chicken skin just thinking about the goodness that follows space!

DEADVIKES & OTIS: Glad to hear you all are hip to keep this thread going.. felt like it might be dying. And I agree with OTIS in regards to the vibe. I peak at them other threads.. but they’re like Space sometimes they get a little tense, sometimes a little scary :)

AUDIENCE RECORDINGS:
When I know there’s NO SBD in existence at this point. I can really dig a good Audience recording. If there’s a SBD I tend to wanna go to it first. But I think you really gain a different perspective when listening to Audience tapes, and hell after all the crappy tapes I had growing up, these 1st gen Audience recordings sound better than those. And often times sound pretty damn sweet. I'm looking at you June '83.

MISSING PERSONS:
Bolo seems to pop in from time to time.

Missing: FourWindsBlow & ConeKid (Hope all is well!)

BUMP: STRIDER88 - RIP Curtis Mayfield I’m gonna have to go in the garage and find my SuperFly CD, it’s been awhile and what an amazing talent. What was the scene like at that show?

Yes, it is a 6-pack, but man-oh-man, I really enjoyed it!

For the 2nd day in a row, it is "Candyman" that is the first set winner, though I enjoyed all of the other tunes as well. "Masterpiece" is def. my fav. Bobby Weir Dylan tune, and this whole set has a lot of really strong energy.

I have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to 87, as I think that the short sets turned me off in the past. However, with the release of the Giants' Box, and some suggestions from this board and another friend, I am finding more and more about 87 that I love.

Looking forward to Set II - "Shakedown" opener - you know I love that!

Peace

Glad to see you guys around for the ride.
87, the comeback year. Remember, Jerry had to learn how to play guitar again after the coma. What a run after the recovery.

There is a ton of great shows in 1987, were are a lucky bunch.

Yes, shorter shows for sure. Always love a Sugaree and that Birdsong is something. Looking forward to the second set.

Let's go Jim, Vguy, Oroborous, Bob t, Gollum, Mhammond!

Damn, you’d think with all this “extra” time I wouldn’t be so damn busy....sigh, falling behind again....
Been spending a little extra time with 11/1/85. Hadn’t broke this out in forever either, hee-hee you guys have been really pulling out so many awesome chestnuts that I’ve neglected trying to keep up with all the great new stuff I’ve picked up the last couple years.
Anyway, good show, Jer drops a few clams and they seem to get a little less in sync later in, but that’s nit picking. What? 5 or 6 tunes before drums, including High Time. Always dig She Belongs to me. Used to think this was a scratch your head pick, meaning imo there are many better 85 shows, and as this is only one of 2 from this great year released, it used to puzzle me. Now, I’m glad we have at least the 2 we do....oh, the Riverbend is definitely a Boobie Dazzler. Got me psyched to go deep on 85 since it will be 35 anniversaries of some of my favorite shows attended at least). Dipped into the Frost too. Going to start on the June 90 Cali shows next couple weeks as they were my first trip to the promised land with that 20 year old in tow and ran into ole Lee Esdee for the first time in forever at Shorline. Also hung with an X at the expo 😉 GOOD TIMES, good shows. I’ll have to have a video night for the 16th.....THEN....
Then we’ll start with those legendary Greek shows to start my 85 summer adventure, but first....
Will try to sneak that 9/18/87 in this weekend as that is a solid 87 show fo sure!
Tonight looking forward to Oteil on the stream, then the awesome 7/7/89 show. Will probably pop the DVD in for the show though as it’s too hard for this old top to go that long without treats and pee breaks etc lol.
Have fun, be safe, play dead!

Don't forget to stop by Ventura for 7/13/85 & 7/14/85.. I hadn't listened to those in forever until someone mentioned them on the DaP forum and they're greeeeeat!

Some tapes just get emblazoned in your mind in those formative years and you know all the riffs & nuisances, 7/13 is like that for me.

VGUY you should be hip to that too, OMSN > FOTM opener.. love that Fire.

One of the Hawks that live in the tree across the street was soaring around during the Bird Song when I listened to it the other day. Dead Magic

Alright, got some listening to do.

The April 1973 Curtis Mayfield concert in Phoenix was at the Celebrity Theater that has a round stage that revolves full circle. The audience was mostly African American. The feeling I got was Black Power with dignity and grace . I remember the bass player saying “power to the people means power to ALL the people”. My altered state of mind was real focused that night. Curtis Mayfield was truly a genius of soul and spirit.
Freddie King who opened for Curtis that night had quite the smile of joy as he picked a mean guitar.
Sometimes we only get one chance to see a great musician perform. Maybe that one time gives us a feeling and insight that stays with us for 50 years or more. Those two musicians did it.
JRF68 has gone fishing. A few years ago a gentleman on the boards expressed concern that he could not afford a new box set of his favorite era. JRF68 put out the call that he would help out. I threw in $20. and a couple other folks donated about the same. JRF payed the lions share. That man understands service for others. He deserves nothing less than respect.
So people go out and do something positive today , be it as simple as kind words for others.

I always thought when I was older I'd try to stay hip to the new music... But I find myself going further and further into what has come before. 1973 Curtis Mayfield on a revolving stage at the Celebrity Theater singing power to the people.. SHeeeeaaat!

That sounds amazing.

STRIDER 88 thanks for the scoop. Man you saw some good stuff, I appreciate you sharing your stories.

Do you have all the GD shows you saw listed somewhere? I know it's a pain to list em on this here website, but I'd love to check that list out. You my friend have seen some epic shows.

And sorry to hear about JRF68, I saw some of that going down on the other board.

Alright.. I'm heading into the Chicken Skin part of this MSG show from '87.

No reason to get excited..

Good old G...you should worry - I think I Iost direction with modern music somewhere in the mid 1980s. I wouldn't for a second put modern music down, but I would personally rather hear something form the 1950s/60s/70s than something recorded last week.

Good to know I'm not alone;)

In retrospect it was the popular music of the 1980s (which was just not doing it for me) that led me to classic rock which eventually led me to the Grateful Dead, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

But when you think about an artist like Curtis Mayfield, it's hard for me to compare the type of music he was making to the popular music I hear my daughter listening to.

I fear I'm getting old.

I'm trying to keep an open mind, but...
If you ask me the music that was happening in the '60s & '70s has a certain level of quality that is hard to beat.

Alright, that all being said, I finished 9/18/87, loved it, again.
Now I'm checking out a nice upgrade of the 3/31/93 SBD from Charlie Miller.
I guess that's "modern" music and it ain't bad;)

Is it 420 yet?

Yep, that show is a smoker. Really love the variety of these 80s sets. The "Shakedown" "Women Are Smarter" "Terrapin" is one hell of a way to start a set, and the post-Drums/Space portion deserves all of the accolades that it has received. I love how energized they sound throughout the whole show.

The more and more I listen, the more and more I love this band. So much to give, and they ask so little in return (save for massive amounts of our time :)

What's on tap for tomorrow? It's going to be another humid scorcher here, so I am thinking I will hole up in the AC, play some tunes, and spend most of my day reading some obnoxiously long novels. Perhaps an equally long show?

Looking forward to the Shakedown Stream tonight! Also, I hope JRF returns one day - he's a good dude and has been a friend on these boards for a long time. Perhaps he will make an appearance around these parts - a lot of the drama seems to be absent here.

Peace

EDIT: Oh, the VAST majority of music that I listen to was recorded well before I was born. Phish, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, some Wilco... a smattering of other things here and there, but mostly 50s, 60s, and 70s for me too. I think it is pretty common, at least among my group of friends.

highlights for me:
* juicy Weir guitar on Candyman, Shakedown
*in-your-face "Big Apple" style "Bird Song"
*Drums/Space - my fave part of this show (on first listen). a great night for the rhythm devils- someone (Mickey?) sez "go get em" as Jerry enters for space....

remember that "View from the Vault 4" - with 2 1987 shows? it has a Bird Song, too!

moseying over to Shakedown Stream...

Great show. Good to hear you all enjoyed it. That finish is something. Morning Dew, Jerry gives it his all. Good Lovin, La Bamba, Good Lovin, pretty sweet. Solid encore.

Had to pull out the liner notes from this show, DL talks about this show as the best of the year. Not sure, but it is really good. I always thought the October Shoreline shows were pretty damn good. Hey Pocky Way!

Send us a pick Otis

Sorry for the delay. I got a little "too" into the Shakedown Stream last night and fell right asleep on the couch sometime during Drums/Space.

For today, how about something from the Pacific NW box? 6/24/73 Portland sound good? I've sort of lost track of where we've been, so if this is a repeat, I will offer up another suggestion.

Happy Saturday folks!

Peace

Phew, went hard with the 7/7/89 last night. Oteil another great guest. I don’t know much about him and had never heard him speak before, so really enjoyed. Another amazing 89 show. Ok, going to have to do a double header today, both 9/18/87 and 6/24/73......that’s cool, good day for it.
A little gloomy (rain would be nice, please!....and the misses is at work since their forcing shit open way too early here. Numbers are already going back up, but hey, rich folk just HAVE to come and as Texas is currently a hot spot we’ll look forward to them bringing the plague with them as like half the state comes here for the summer...heaven forbid they couldn’t get their free DVDs and Internet, sorry, anyway its a good day to pump up the noise, ya das good!

Last time I was in step with popular music was the 70s when R&R was just as popular as “pop” music....did really enjoy much of the 90s music though. The rest, eehhhh not so much...

STRIDER: WORD!!
